Danielle Martinos I think paul adored and emulated john. They had a strong, close relationship. I think they enjoyed each other’s energy and talent and it turned into the most influential partnership in musical history.
The Beatles were more than just a band, they revolutionised the music industry and inspired generations of musicians, and their music became part of people's lives. So when you look at what they achieved, you realise how talented and special they really were. John was always in awe of Paul's uniqueness and creativity and vice versa.
I'm sure at the tail end of the 60s they truly couldn't stand each other, just on varying accounts of the studio sessions by that time. Even Ringo quit at one point. I just feel like they all needed time away from one another, as people do. Being around the same people nonstop for a decade has to be exhausting.
I think after Brian Epstein death it was the beginning of the end. Depending on one's perspective fairly or unfairly blaming Linda or Yoko breaking the band up. However, all of them said each member wanted to raise their status in the band. They all wanted to chart their own course in Music and their personal lives. I think for their individual sanity and to maintain the high caliber of their music it was best to break up the band and retain the sense of brotherhood and friendship.

I agree. As John was saying, each one of them went through moments where they wanted to get back together and record new music. They just had a problem with that feeling being mutual. I think that the stars would have eventually aligned for them. Who knows what great music would be around if they recorded more? I suspect that they could have prevented disco from ever becoming a thing. lol

I absolutely love the little comment he makes on Paul doing well. That he always knew Paul would do alright. The confidence John had in Paul's ability is astounding. Truly the greatest songwriting team of all time.
And also nice to see his concern for Ringo. After the break-up there was definitely a shared feeling between John, Paul and George that the only one who wasn't guaranteed a successful solo career was Ringo, so they all made sure they played on his records, wrote songs for him, produced records for him and so on.

You can tell the affection John had for Paul in this interview. I also read that Lennon gave an interview on 12/8/80, he was invariably asked about Paul and Lennon said “He’s like a brother. I love him,” families - we certainly have our ups and downs and our quarrels. But at the end of the day, when it’s all said and done, I would do anything for him, and I think he would do anything for me.”
It´s so beautiful to see John being so lovely, kind and soft, and calm, talking about his soulmate, he doesn´t say bad things about Paul, or George, or Ringo, or The Beatles
Agreed, and John remained happy, mellow and contented for the next, last 5 years of his life. He had just got back with Yoko when he taped this, and she was 2 months pregnant with their son Sean. People have been hating on John's wife Yoko for 50 years, but she made him happy and gave him peace and joy in his private life. If you love John, you should love Yoko for giving him that priceless gift, in what was to be a tragically short 40 years on the planet.
The people who actually knew him personally describe a very flawed individual who at times could be extremely cruel. He was known to have had a pathological hatred of this disabled, often mocking them. There is footage o youtube of John mocking disabled people on stage.

It gets even sadder when you hear Yoko do her "bird calls" and reflect back on John saying she was super talented. I do wish he'd lived though just to see him standing around in art gallery's cheering Yoko on as she screams like a legit crazy person into a mic and thinks it's art. When Lennon was calm and articulate he was the best speaker in The Beatles. This is really nice to hear John's fond memories of Paul and how they healed their differences. This is my favourite interview of John. Thanks heaps for uploading this.
Probably the best interview I've seen so far. He was so healthy, happy, and together. He was so honest and self-actualized here. He even admitted to always being a little 'loose' and getting into trouble. You can see here he completely understands himself. What unique guy; always been a fan.
They were Great friends. Imagine, no pun intended, what all the Beatles had to go through when the Band broke up, and to this day, in every interview, Paul is always asked about John and the Breakup. This has to be difficult, especially when your best friend is Dead.

Throughout it all, Paul looked up to John. From the '57 village fete to this moment. In the Get Back tapes, after George walks out and John hasn't shown up, they believe John has also quit the Beatles. Paul smiles and jokes, "And then there were two." But while the others continue discussing how to proceede the camera stays on him, and his smile fades and he fights off tears. Wrenching.
Terry Waugh their attitude to their music was never to go back, always looking to create something completely new and recognising when something had run it's course.
I believe they would have got together at one point or another. John & Paul were close even when they were mad at each other and not speaking. John said it best one time, "I can say whatever I want about Paul or the Beatles, but no one else can". Another words, if he wants to bad mouth Paul or the Beatles that's his perogative, but if he hears someone else saying something negative he'll stand up for them. Even if he says it first and they try and kiss his ass and agree with him he wont tolerate it. It's like family members fighting. They'll go at like cats and dogs, but will always stand by each other.
John's job was lancing Paul when he got too soft. Paul's job was forcing John to be more musically adventurous. Ironically in "How Do You Sleep" John was basically reverting to his role in the Beatles. Equally ironic is how well regarded "Ram" is as an album today.

The connection between two artists in the creation of something beautiful, is part of the love that inspired them to write "With A Little Help From My Friends." Who do you think that song was about? Listen to it again. They loved each other, plain and simple. What you're hearing in this beautiful music is the chemistry between these four friends. No single one could make a Beatles track on their own, nothing was quite like it. Don't always take the word of the press as law.
I’m so glad this video is here. It’s proof that whatever their differences were after the breakup they got past it realizing sometimes it’s not worth losing friendships. I wish they had gotten together. We will never know. ❤️ the Beatles.
I never saw this interview with John until now. This is great stuff. I loved how John was like, "I'm happy that Ringo is doing alright. That he found a niche. I knew Paul would be alright". Shows just how much John truly respected Paul, even though they fought badly during the time Paul was in Wings.

The Beatles; no-one can overstate their importance as a musical and cultural phenomenon. Their musical output is unrivalled and always will be. Paul McCartney is one of the finest human beings that ever lived.

John is someone I've been listening to since I was a kid. His voice has always been around in my life. Sometimes I listen to the Beatles everyday for weeks, and sometimes I got for months without playing them. You take him for granted because he's part of your culture and your heritage and he's always been there. Then you see an interview like this and realize how much love you have for him. Weird as I've never met him, but I love you John. RIP.

That accolade might go to Ringo. What's striking about the band is George Harrison was the only one who had a normal upbringing; the other three members had childhoods beset by tragedy, particularly Ringo.
Lennon never called himself a working class hero, the song isn´t about him... With that said. Lennon´s father was a sailor, he left him for like 17 years. Lennon´s mother was some kind of free spirit who couldn´t take care of him. So he moved in with his aunt Mimi who was a housekeeper, and her husband George who was a milkman. George passed away when Lennon was 14. So let´s not pretend he grew up in some fancy academic family.
this is the happiest I've seen John Lennon in an interview post-Beatles and it's when he's talking about his friendship with Paul - in the end they were like brothers they had their arguments sure but they definitely loved each other and looked out for one another
This is the honest, retrospective discussion I've always hoped John had given. Now I hear it... He was not bitter at all. He acknowledged the deep friendship and connection he and Paul had and In fact he was caring and respectful. Really quite gracious. Thank goodness.
Imagine what it must have been like (and probably still is like for Paul) having all those reporters constantly in your face and probing you about your most private feelings for another person? Continually poking the bear to hear words of love or hate. No wonder both John and Paul got so sick of it and often came off as dicks about each other (John in particular, let's be honest). Their feelings for each other were never anyone else's business and yet they were baited again and again to disclose things that were deeply personal. Sad. But it's lovely to hear John in this interview, being natural and candid. Bless him.

Lennon said he was happy for Ringo' success. But in the end George was likely the most held back during the Beatles days. He may have made the best solo albums of all of them. All Things Must Pass is a masterwork. Following that his Concert for Bangladesh is a hugely important musical work of the 20th Century. It wasn't until the Beatles went their own ways that some amazing talent was exposed by all of them.
Walking up the East Side in NYC one sunny winter Saturday afternoon with a friend in 1977 by a small park, who do we see: John and Yoko about 20 feet from me. There was no one there other then them, me and my friend. My friend calls out to John, who responds with a "Hello there," and we approached them. My friend was enamored with John and I was giving the eye to Yoko and she give it back. We talked for a few minutes and they said they liked the ability to often walk in the city without being acknowledged or intruded upon. It was cool, and we talked for about 10 minutes. I must say, they seemed to have a sense of aura about them. Friendly and pleasant to talk with but we didn't want to intrude so we shook hands and complemented them and walked on. Nobody else there, just the four of us. Only in New York!
I remember when John was asked about "How Do You Sleep?", he said, "If you can't have a fight with your best friend,..." Referring to Paul as his best friend, even through the rough times. I think that is how Paul views it now, and that's not only accurate. I believe it's the healthiest way for him to go on.
It's a relief that this interview is very consistent with what Paul says about John these days and his memory of how they were feeling about each other in the mid-to-late 70s. They were over it. I think they'd continue bitching at each other lol but the mutual respect was there. They would have gone on Howard Stern together and shit.
When you watch the movie "Yesterday" you remember just how many amazing, perfect tunes John and Paul wrote and how far beyond everyone they were - and still are - as a writing duo.
He didn't say they had the same talent, just that he felt the same way with the two of them. Kind of makes his relationship with Paul seem a lot stronger actually for him to say that because we all know how much he loved Yoko.

What a superbly reflective, objective and self-aware man he became. I can only imagine what he could have gone on to do later in life. Like all 4 Beatles he was both ordinary and special at the same time. It was what made the world love them so much.
This was sad enough, after just reading about his death and watching the end of "Yesterday," but then he mentioned he'd been worried about Ringo and my heart burst.
As someone born years after Lennon passed I just gotta say that he is one of the coolest people I've ever seen and its a shame that people like that so few artists today have his integrity not to mention talent.

I think as the Beatles, they had said everything musically they had to say. They had their time. There's no going back really. But as Lennon and McCartney, I could have seen them doing something had John not been murdered. That's what makes us ache. The music and life we missed out on. I felt the same way after Philip Seymour Hoffman died.

John was witty and amusing. His dark side was steep growing without his parents. He got married too young to a woman he didn’t completely love who was pregnant. He could be very mean and cutting. Got high to many times and went far over the wall and was stuck on him enough to even say he was Jesus. The other 3 guys hated Yoko and with good reason she was overbearing and over stepped her boundaries. It hurt when they broke up but they were better off never coming back. To much would have been expected. Except for Plastic Ono and Imagine John had slipped but his ending made sure his legacy is totally enduring. August 13, 1966 saw The Beatles at the Detroit Olympia-such a thrill. I have a Beatle room in my house full of items back to 1963-English! Beatle John
Loved hearing this. John being balanced, fair, and loving. We can all only "imagine" what would have come from a reunion in the studio. But, we are all so lucky to have what they did give us. Great great songs and stories that we get to play over and over again.
I enjoyed seeing John looking and seemingly feeling truly happy in this video. I especially liked hearing about his positive feelings towards each of the other members of the Fab Four. It seems as if five years after their breakup John realized how many great times they had together and how great the music on which they collaborated was. No reason for him to feel bitter. I've always wondered with sadness why John was taken from us so young and senselessly. I'll never forget that terrible night. He deserved to enjoy his life and family. I just happened to see this great video and had to watch it. RIP John. A lot of people miss and pray for your soul.

You can tell the affection John had for Paul in this interview. I also read that Lennon gave an interview on 12/8/80, he was invariably asked about Paul and Lennon said “He’s like a brother. I love him,” families - we certainly have our ups and downs and our quarrels. But at the end of the day, when it’s all said and done, I would do anything for him, and I think he would do anything for me.”
It´s so beautiful to see John being so lovely, kind and soft, and calm, talking about his soulmate, he doesn´t say bad things about Paul, or George, or Ringo, or The Beatles
Agreed, and John remained happy, mellow and contented for the next, last 5 years of his life. He had just got back with Yoko when he taped this, and she was 2 months pregnant with their son Sean.
People have been hating on John's wife Yoko for 50 years, but she made him happy and gave him peace and joy in his private life. If you love John, you should love Yoko for giving him that priceless gift, in what was to be a tragically short 40 years on the planet.

Probably the best interview I've seen so far. He was so healthy, happy, and together. He was so honest and self-actualized here. He even admitted to always being a little 'loose' and getting into trouble. You can see here he completely understands himself. What unique guy; always been a fan.
I could never stand John, but this interview sheds a better light on him.

In the Get Back tapes, after George walks out and John hasn't shown up, they believe John has also quit the Beatles. Paul smiles and jokes, "And then there were two." But while the others continue discussing how to proceede the camera stays on him, and his smile fades and he fights off tears. Wrenching.

I just went to listen to Sir Paul McCartney speak at South Bank Centre last week and he said he regrets not having told Lennon he loved him. It was such an emotional moment.

They loved each other, plain and simple. What you're hearing in this beautiful music is the chemistry between these four friends. No single one could make a Beatles track on their own, nothing was quite like it. Don't always take the word of the press as law.

I never saw this interview with John until now. This is great stuff. I loved how John was like, "I'm happy that Ringo is doing alright. That he found a niche. I knew Paul would be alright". Shows just how much John truly respected Paul, even though they fought badly during the time Paul was in Wings.

John is someone I've been listening to since I was a kid. His voice has always been around in my life. Sometimes I listen to the Beatles everyday for weeks, and sometimes I got for months without playing them. You take him for granted because he's part of your culture and your heritage and he's always been there. Then you see an interview like this and realize how much love you have for him. Weird as I've never met him, but I love you John. RIP.

That accolade might go to Ringo. What's striking about the band is George Harrison was the only one who had a normal upbringing; the other three members had childhoods beset by tragedy, particularly Ringo.

Lennon never called himself a working class hero, the song isn´t about him... With that said. Lennon´s father was a sailor, he left him for like 17 years. Lennon´s mother was some kind of free spirit who couldn´t take care of him. So he moved in with his aunt Mimi who was a housekeeper, and her husband George who was a milkman. George passed away when Lennon was 14. So let´s not pretend he grew up in some fancy academic family.
This breaks my heart. So amazing to hear John talk in such a lovely way about Paul like this. What a huge missed opportunity. If only ...
this is the happiest I've seen John Lennon in an interview post-Beatles and it's when he's talking about his friendship with Paul - in the end they were like brothers they had their arguments sure but they definitely loved each other and looked out for one another

This is the honest, retrospective discussion I've always hoped John had given. Now I hear it... He was not bitter at all. He acknowledged the deep friendship and connection he and Paul had and In fact he was caring and respectful. Really quite gracious. Thank goodness.

Imagine what it must have been like (and probably still is like for Paul) having all those reporters constantly in your face and probing you about your most private feelings for another person? Continually poking the bear to hear words of love or hate. No wonder both John and Paul got so sick of it and often came off as dicks about each other (John in particular, let's be honest). Their feelings for each other were never anyone else's business and yet they were baited again and again to disclose things that were deeply personal. Sad. But it's lovely to hear John in this interview, being natural and candid. Bless him.

Lennon said he was happy for Ringo' success. But in the end George was likely the most held back during the Beatles days. He may have made the best solo albums of all of them. All Things Must Pass is a masterwork. Following that his Concert for Bangladesh is a hugely important musical work of the 20th Century. It wasn't until the Beatles went their own ways that some amazing talent was exposed by all of them.

Walking up the East Side in NYC one sunny winter Saturday afternoon with a friend in 1977 by a small park, who do we see: John and Yoko about 20 feet from me. There was no one there other then them, me and my friend. My friend calls out to John, who responds with a "Hello there," and we approached them. My friend was enamored with John and I was giving the eye to Yoko and she give it back. We talked for a few minutes and they said they liked the ability to often walk in the city without being acknowledged or intruded upon. It was cool, and we talked for about 10 minutes. I must say, they seemed to have a sense of aura about them. Friendly and pleasant to talk with but we didn't want to intrude so we shook hands and complemented them and walked on. Nobody else there, just the four of us. Only in New York!
I remember when John was asked about "How Do You Sleep?", he said, "If you can't have a fight with your best friend,..." Referring to Paul as his best friend, even through the rough times. I think that is how Paul views it now, and that's not only accurate. I believe it's the healthiest way for him to go on.
It's a relief that this interview is very consistent with what Paul says about John these days and his memory of how they were feeling about each other in the mid-to-late 70s. They were over it. I think they'd continue bitching at each other lol but the mutual respect was there. They would have gone on Howard Stern together and shit.

I think as the Beatles, they had said everything musically they had to say. They had their time. There's no going back really. But as Lennon and McCartney, I could have seen them doing something had John not been murdered. That's what makes us ache. The music and life we missed out on. I felt the same way after Philip Seymour Hoffman died.

John was witty and amusing. His dark side was steep growing without his parents. He got married too young to a woman he didn’t completely love who was pregnant. He could be very mean and cutting. Got high to many times and went far over the wall and was stuck on him enough to even say he was Jesus. The other 3 guys hated Yoko and with good reason she was overbearing and over stepped her boundaries. It hurt when they broke up but they were better off never coming back. To much would have been expected. Except for Plastic Ono and Imagine John had slipped but his ending made sure his legacy is totally enduring. August 13, 1966 saw The Beatles at the Detroit Olympia-such a thrill. I have a Beatle room in my house full of items back to 1963-English! Beatle John

Loved hearing this. John being balanced, fair, and loving. We can all only "imagine" what would have come from a reunion in the studio. But, we are all so lucky to have what they did give us. Great great songs and stories that we get to play over and over again.

I enjoyed seeing John looking and seemingly feeling truly happy in this video. I especially liked hearing about his positive feelings towards each of the other members of the Fab Four. It seems as if five years after their breakup John realized how many great times they had together and how great the music on which they collaborated was. No reason for him to feel bitter. I've always wondered with sadness why John was taken from us so young and senselessly. I'll never forget that terrible night. He deserved to enjoy his life and family. I just happened to see this great video and had to watch it. RIP John. A lot of people miss and pray for your soul.
