    Flew on a National Airlines 747 from JFK to MIA in 1972 as a kid. What a great memory!

    I got to fly an American Airlines 747 charter flight, Boston to Honolulu, refueling at San Francisco in 1977, when they had the upper deck lounge, we spent most of the flight there, just like a private plane, sitting on sofas, didn't realize at the time how great it was...

    Humans can be terrible but on the other hand, when we work together, we can, and have, created the most amazing feats of engineering

    The 747 was the first of a lot of things. It was the first wide-body jet, the first double decker jet, the first (and only) jet whose cockpit isn’t on the main deck, the first passenger jet featuring high-bypass engines, etc. The 747 was four times bigger than any passenger jet that came before it. The 707 which was the largest passenger jet at the time but is only a quarter the size of the 747. Now the best selling wide-body jet; the 777-300ER which is single decker and has two engines is slightly larger than the original 747, the 747-100 series.

    Wow, 45 years ago!! The 747 still strikes me as one of the marvels of the modern world, so it must have seemed like it had come from another planet or travelled through time in 1969. Just a shame that the rate of progress hasn't kept up - 45 years prior to 1969, there were no commercial airlines, helicopters didn't exist, and almost every plane was a biplane. Since then, apart from Concorde, all we've really done is tinker with the same design.

    • @Terraceview
      @Terraceview Před 10 lety +1

      Exactly what I think. I also think the Concorde is no where near as brilliant as this design, it was more a show off to the Russians. It's almost impossible to imagine what the 747 would've looked like in the late 60's.

      I was 8 in 1969, and she looked great indeed. Drove out to the field (SFO) in 1970 w/Dad to see the 1st Pan Am bird, lotsa airplane.

      A memory that is distinct, is not just how large and capacious the airplane was, but also how tall...even aft of the hump portion of the fuselage (Let alone the fin), the top of the fuse just towered above the ramp.

    A bit more than 50 years separated the first flight of a Boeing aircraft and the 747. Now 50 years separate us from the first 747 but it's still in production, and the new aircrafts don't make any significant breakthrough. There was a time when rapid evolution in aeronautics made the humanity dreaming.

    Man that double deck concept looks A LOT like the Airbus A380. I'm betting the airlines told Boeing that plane was too big and they'd never be able to fill all the seats, thus that concept was abandoned.
    Same sort of problem is happening with the Airbus A380 right now, it doesn't make economical sense to load 500 people on one flight. Hard to fill up all those seats, airlines have figured out they can run two flights with something like a Boeing 767 that seats 250, if they don't completely fill up the smaller plane, it isn't as big of a deal because its cheaper to operate.

    September 30th, 1968 was the day the 747 was released. January 22nd, 1970 entered service with Pan Am.
    Hard to imagine this plane weights about 500 tons when. loaded.
