00:00 Top 10 Stylish Gangster Movies Introduction
Hollywood loves gangsters for their glitz, flash, devilish charm, and admittedly, sometimes stylish yet over-the-top looks, which help underline their character.
The gangster genre rose to prominence in the 1920s when the whole Prohibition era definitely had an impact on it along with Vitaphone, which allowed for sound in movies. The sound of Tommy guns made for infamous and larger-than-life storylines, and, along with the anti-Italian sentiment, movies like Little Caesar, The Doorway to Hell, or Scarface became popular.
Big-time gangsters, both in movies and in real life, were particular about their appearance. Al Capone, Bugsy Siegel, and Lucky Luciano were all known for the way they dressed. While their actions were not the least bit gentlemanly, they understood the power of their appearance and what it could make them look like in their community.
We limited ourselves to one film per director to create our list, and we didn’t look at the acting at all. This is purely an appreciation of menswear.
01:48 10. Bonnie And Clyde (1967)
03:20 09. Scarface (1932)
04:52 08. American Gangster (2007)
06:17 07. Road To Perdition (2002)
07:23 06. Casino (1995)
08:48 05. Get Carter (1971)
09:42 04. Godfather Part II (1974)
11:30 03. Once Upon A Time In America (1984)
12:19 02. The Untouchables (1987)
13:26 The Sting (1973)
We're curious what your list would look like? And more importantly, why?
15:46 Outfit Rundown - Jak na to + styl
man i just love his striped double brested navy blue suit .
Such a shame people’s minds are stained by stereotypes and will say and comment pejoratively that it looks costumey.
It’s simply one of the best suits he owns in my humble opinion.
@@OrrosGG the peasants in my country only wear flip flops and shorts....and my style is close to the one depicted here. 🤦♂️ can't even go and do my groceries ....
So glad GG mentioned “Once Upon A Time in America”, hands down one of the greatest, most overlooked gangster movies of all time. Sergio Leone’s parting shot and magnum opus.
Once Upon a Time in America is so overlooked, people just can't fathom sitting down for 4+ hours for a story and imagery. If it were 1.5 hours maybe it won't be overlooked so much, but still would be. People rather keep talking about Taxi Driver (because muh mental illness The Joker anyone??), Raging Bull, Good Fellas, and The Sopranos. They would rather watch entire 45 minute episode series of The Sopranos over and over than watch Once Upon a Time in America once and soak in a story and ultra-classic film-making by a man who probably still did not know English.
The Sting is one of my favorite movies of all time: the style, the story, the actors, and the music (which didn’t match the era but was perfect)!
GD retired --- Yes, the Ragtime music did not correspond to the time, yet did correspond to the spirit of the story.
I love Sven’s move into putting into practice the stereotype of the gangster in a pinstripe double breasted suit and signature white banded fedora.
If we get people to get rid of the ideas of stereotypes in mind, those classic suits wouldn’t be considered costumey by the average joe that doesn’t understand classic menswear.
Another honorable mention of a stereotype is the top hat and monocle combo which in the idea of some people is the representation of the aristocracy or the british entrepreneur.
Although funny, what is sad is how people comment pejoratively the way those people see those stereotypical outfits.
Gerald G. Orros --- Absolutely correct.
Im a suit enthusiast and still think it looks costumey.
@@Gesetzgebender --- Yes, especially the too-loud contrast between the background colour and the pinstripes, which bespeaks of social desperation; perhaps in place of a personality?
the fedora was the detective's and P I's hat , gangster's and other stylish Criminals
wore the barsalino hat
Didn’t The Godfather wear a grey Homburg hats?
The sting is amazing. The suits!!!!! Everything is great!!! Can’t say more than that it is great…
One of my favorites. Seen it at least 10 times. Special props to Robert Shaw
@@jefffawcett indeed!
Just watched the Sting for the first time a couple weeks ago. What a fantastic movie!
That dark brown suit with the high round lapels -- just stunning. I want one!
Would be fun to see your analysis of period films that were awarded Best Costuming, perhaps as far back as the suit goes.
i would love to see that
Good to know there's no orange in the background Raphael! 😂
“They send one of yours to the hospital, you send one of theirs to the morgue! Thats the Chicago way! And thats how you get Capone!”
- Sean Connery, The untouchables
Great to meet you yesterday. Glad to know more people in the Minnesota EO community are on CZcams. I have many things to learn from you 💯.
This is one of the most stylish outfits I've ever see Raphael assemble. And he pull it off with such confidence.
If I'm to wear a fitted replica of that outfit, I will always be worry if people would notice.
Congratulations on 1 million subscribers, thoroughly deserved!
Learned something new! The rolled brim difference on Vintage vs. Modern derby hats. Thank you!🎩👌
Your attention to detail awesome..really digging this channel and learning a lot..thank you..!
Great episode.... and a great list... thanks
Fascinating video and the clothes that are highlighted...stunning! That said. Motherless Brooklyn impressed me as well.
What's more funny of all this is the fact that Sven, Preston or Kyle have such a knowledge of style and whatnot that they can pull off the gangster look easily and look even more intimidating.
So close to a million, congrats guys.
Great video guys!
i was just searching for these. thanks gg!!
The intro so cold ❄️
I love seeing people give love to the classic Scarface movie! It does deserve it. Great video as always and remember, never rat on your friends, and always keep your mouth shut.
Grats on 1m Bruv
Almost to 1 million subscribers you deserve it man
Congratulations for 1 million subscribers
I’ve been waiting for this video
Great vid.
Your best video ever!
Your others are fantastic too
Great video
Good to see the shout-out to Justin Fitzpatrick at the end. I own a pair from his "Cle Elum" range and I am very satisfied with the make, especially for the price. Would you consider sharing your thoughts on Justin's brand in a future video, Raphael?
Beste Grüße aus Köln!
Thanks for Get Carter. One of the overlooked classics of 1970s in many ways.
A constant source of inspiration of fashion for me is the Coen Brother’s Miller’s Crossing. Great attention to detail and lots of close-ups.
Great vid, and another vote for Miller's Crossing.
Brilliant video
I was hoping I’d see The Sting on this list, and wow you didn’t disappoint. All hail Newman and Redford
1M subscribers congrats
The fashion in the movie Public Enemies caught my eye. Deep looked great.
One of my favorite menswear shows (i know the video is about movies but I feel like talking about a show) is Sherlock. The one with Benedict Cumberbatch. I love Mycroft and how he's always rocking the 3 piece suit, and Sherlock with his consistent lack of a tie. It really shows how different the characters are, with Mycroft being so proper and Sherlock being so out there.
My favorite genre is mobster movies so I'm definitely going to take the recommendations. Thanks Raphael. 🙂
This is video is incredible!!!
Big Brother by Jackie Chan also has some incredible gangsters style from every social classes, in my opinion. There are also some more traditional outfits, as it sets in Asia
I would love to see one about movies that put emphasis on etiquette and manners, in a similar way as the Kingsman "How to become a Gentleman" scenes if possible, because it's one part of that series I have enjoyed so much :)
i recommend you to watch the channel William Hanson he is a ettiquete expert and the channel the royal butler but be aware their outfits are not that good
I love the intro
Hello Gentleman gazette people, I've been watching your videos for a long time and i really admire and appreciate what you all do to keep class alive. I've a little suggestion- there's a song called Style by robin and the 7 hoods released in 1964. As the name suggests, its about style and its classic. Hence, i feel it is your field of expertise. It'll be fun to watch your video on your opinions about the song, and ofcourse, the suits in the song.
And then follow it up with the Kinks' "He's a Dedicated Follower of Fashion." 😁
I understand that you're making a video on downtown abbey soon, could you also do a video on boardwalk empire?
Also: PEAKY $%^&ING BLINDERS
Perfect combination gangsters and style!! My favorites
Video on the original Oceans 11 would be interesting
I never thought I'd see a screenshot from Zardoz in a Gentleman's Gazette video 🤣
At this moment - June 6th 2021 - 19:17 GMT+7, this channel has 999k subscribers
Thank you for these cinephile episodes! Together they (almost) atone for Mr. Schneider's crime of calling Hitchcock's Vertigo boring in one of them. ;)
I just love the styles in Chinatown, Devil in the Blue dress , L.A. Confidential , Funeral in Berlin
Would you guys do a break down for the men’s styles from Dallas the tv show?
Great Video, I know this is not a Gangster Movie but The Great Gatsby could have been included because of the wardrobe of Robert Redford.
Looking over mens suits I saw the reference to "musketeer cuffs". Can you explain
Also interested in french style vs English
Just remember to get the jacket cut to allow room for a vintage handgun.
The Sting on the top. The men's clothing is stunning, that would be my era if I could go back in time.
Road to Perdition is my favorite on the list. What a classic.
Yup. Great movie.
I would love a gentleman's gazette magazine, some exclusive articles or something would be amazing to just flip through by the fireplace, and collect as time goes on.
1 Million Subscribers! Who how!
Congo 1M
Going to hit a million
I love this
Congratsss
This video will push Gentleman's Gazette over 1 million subscribers. Raphael is making a video we can't refuse.
One of the reasons I liked Mafia: Definitive Edition was the stylish outfits the characters wore.
You're Craaaazy. The 80's Scarface is way more stylish than the 30's version!
For GG watchers "go home and get your shinebox" isn't an insult; it's solid advice!
Can you do commentary regarding the costumes from the movie Dracula-1992? Specifically, Gary Oldman. His attire is lovely, but I wanted to know if it was accurate.
You should talk about the clothes in The Wolf of Wall Street.
Please correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, Giorgio Armani was involved for the outfits in the movie The Untouchables?
New videos are getting more interesting
You should check out "Bonanno: a Youngest Godfather"!
And maybe even make a video about it.
Cool 👍🏽
I loved Get Carter, the style and the story were great
Lol the intro😂😂
Glad the Sting was at number one, as Robert Shaw is my favorite actor of all time and this film was an absolute joy and Shaw made a convincing mob boss, he projected power, intelligence and seriousness into every role he played . As a kid, for some reason I gravitated towards Black and White film & TV like Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy, Harold Lloyd and my favorite, the TV series 'The Buccaneers' with Robert Shaw.
Your suit is incredibly smart. I wish I could dress like this!
How about a review of classic villain styles?
Does anyone know what type of tie knot young Don Vito sports? Can’t tell if it’s a four in hand or something vintage.
Oh goodness, almost a Million Gentleman's!!!!
I’d select Miller’s Crossing by the Coen brothers. Excellent clothes in that one
Scarface producer Howard Hughes was a very sharp dresser…until he burned his entire wardrobe of custom clothing.
Awww, man!
@@demspunkdamerica3rdbananar207 in his own weird way he was at the forefront of the “dressing well takes too much of my valuable time” Silicon Valley mindset.
@@JoJoJoker Good to know but still sad.
I think Prince Edward was one of the best dressers and his clothes are preserved along with Wallis'.
They're amazing.
Men clothing makes my mouth water.
I'm a female who loves these broadcasts.
@@demspunkdamerica3rdbananar207 they’re very interesting. Those clothes are still available on Savile Row sometimes from the same manufacturers such as Henry Poole. Hughes had OCD and apparently he thought his clothes had germs on them so he burned them and began wearing cheap stuff off the rack, plus he was apparently paranoid about looking wealthy during the depression. Got rid of his nice cars, too.
nice
I was hoping to see Miller's Crossing.
Michael Franzese a former capo in the Colombo family said he had 50 suits because he was always going to either a wedding or funeral
Yesss!
That still from Zardoz made me hawk my whiskey all over.... lol
The white gold pinky ring is heavily gangster
Love the old Cagney films, always have always will. Angels with Dirty Faces, babay! Bonnie & Clyde was awesome. Just had to mute all of Blanche's screaming. 😲
We have a great community
Bonnie & Clyde may not have been a great movie for men's fashion; but it had a great impact on woman's fashion. After that movie came out, designers started showing longer hem lengths in their collections. The Untouchables clothes were by Giorgio Armani. Do you think that as has was not from the US, he had a different perspective?
Armani is quite misunderstood; you have the Miami Vice designs which he mostly made for the cast, which all people here relentlessly boast their hate with a meme-passion, and the same people only remember his best stuff from The Untouchables; designed during the airing of Miami Vice.
Armani hasn't made anything good since before Eau Di Gio. He's extremely dated and his brand has continued to fail since that bottle of stank.
I'm glad you included American gangster. I think the style in the movie is underrated, especially Denzels double breasted.
You missed Borsalino (1970) with Alain delon and Jean Paul belmondo
I know it was you Sven! You broke my heart.
One of the most beautiful gangster movies is Oscar, with Sylvester Stallone. Besides wonderful clothes it has amazing Art Deco sets. It’s not in the least bit serious, it’s a good movie to watch with a date or the family.
Moider Moider and more Moider always stylish Moider, seriously entertaining list.
Le Samourai (1967) with Alain Delon should have been #1 in the list, thought not a Hollywood film.
Number one for me would be the untouchables scene where all the gangsters including Capone come down the hotel stairs!
You missed the Cotton Club 1984.
What about miller's crossing???
