This was the first tune I ever heard him do. A buddy had it on with headphones. He handed them to me and said, "Check this guy out." I put them on just in time to hear the sweet little change at 2:45. My favorite finger picker ever since.
Chet Atkins was the Granddaddy of fingerstyle. Doyle is a Pappa who carries a melody line as pure and defined as anyone; he is a world-class technical genius on keeping the melody line prominent. Tommy Emmanuel is a First Cousin, who is a breathtaking acoustic innovator on steroids, turning 6 steel strings on a box into a drum machine, orchestra, and lightening quick lead instrument all at the same time. I've only heard Brent Mason on a Tele, but I gather he is in the same family.
How did he do those harmonics so fast? I swear the man is super human! He's also a great christian, patriot, and is funny as heck too. I caught one of his clinics at West L.A. Music a few years back. Awesome!
0:55 was an all chime run, two of them. Catch your breath! Doyle is playing a melodic run with CHORDS - not just a melody line - WHOLE CHORDS, against an open E bass line! Jazz in a Box is a hallmark acoustic composition!
WOW! WOW! ☆☆☆☆☆ KING of GUITAR Thank you for posting my all time favorite musician. I got to see/hear his son Caleb play and he is another fantastic guitar player too.
Spot on - should be posted on every debate about who is best! There are players, like Doyle, Jerry Reed, Breau, Emmanuel etc who have "mastered" the guitar and do whatever they want on it. It then comes down to who's style you like best. There's also guitarists who aren't technically great but play with peerless musicality and imagination. There's no "best" in music - its like taking a bunch of supermodels and saying one is hotter than the other. They're all hot - its just down to your taste.
I agree! its like a beauty contest! I love en all. There is no best in music but at the same time it's funny how there are still good players and bad players or people who just can't play and there does seem to be at least a pattern in what makes a good arrangement and expressive dynamics but then it comes down to if the music makes you feel good. If nobody likes what is being played I guess it could be considered bad music. Ha!
I'm torn between being inspired and giving up right now because I'll never be that good. He playing how the guitar should be played like a good pianist e.g. great mix of bass lines, chords, runs, rhythm, melody.
Oh my, even the wanabees are speechless over this display. This boy is HOT SHOT HUEY ALL ROLLED UP INTO ONE. Just to hot to handle, the boy is just to bad folks. How can you be humble when you can go to town like this with the frets? I don't think that there are going to be any folks out there that are even going to try to emulate these licks and runs. This boy has reached high tech calculus on his six stringed guitar. Just wonderful, check out his other videos and get blown away.
moseseseseses i said i would die happy knowing i will never be able to play this all the way through because it sounds difficult. After making sense of the tab, i just done a bar at a time till it was remembered.. in not half bad i say. hard to keep up as this one races. online.dowload for free...Jazz In The Box
Just saw and heard Doyle for the first time today. His guitar playing is superb. So is that of Tommy Emmanuel, and all the other names mentioned by leoosiku. In my opinion there is no "best" player, only many great players. These musicians have put in years of work to reach the highest standards, and although some may play a in a similar style, each contributes nuances and shades of variation that are uniquely their own. Vive la difference!
I know very little about fingerstyle guitar, and Doyle is awesome. People mentioned great fingerstyle guitarists in comments, I feel very sad that no one mentioned Brent mason. Please check out his videos, the guy is a genius.
Yeah man, very tasty, I like those tuning bends, I like the whole damn thing, impossible for me to just listen to part of it. Merle Travis, Chet Atkins and Joe Maphis are smiling on this.
This song is like the best song in the world. Sound is incredible.. I know this is one of his signiture guitars, but what are the specs, what model, is it hog back &sides or something else, what is the top sitka? Anyone??
That is a 1994 Taylor XX-MC. It was their 20th anniversary model. They made 250 XX-MC's which are mahogany/cedar and 250 XX-RS's which were indian rosewood/sitka spruce. These were the 1st Taylors made in the Grand Auditorium body style. No electronics. I have an XX-MC that I bought new and it has opened up into really incredible sounding guitar for fingerstyle. You see them for sale on occasion, and they usually sell for about $2000. A real bargain for what you're getting, especially since by now they're well played in and tonally at the top of their game. Hope this helps...
Thank you very much man it really helps. This sound is incedible. If they only made 250 XXMC model how hard should it be to get one? It seems this is really rare model, but anyway sound is awsome, very unique.
@Davebanker Nobodys ever perfect, not even this guy (though i'd kill to play like him). Thats the thing I love about guitar. Theres always going to be a new challenge.
i think jazz in the box is one of doyles best songs, i have some pretty decent tabs that are near perfect for the song if anyone is interested, comment me and i will email them
Not mad. Just in a state of shock. Tommy does not "play more complex or intricately than Doyle". Harmonically, fingerstyle playing is not always the most complex as it often will trade off chordal complexity for continuity in bass line. Excepting masters like George Van Eps, Phillip De Gruy, Sylvan Luc, Ted Green, Martin Taylor, Lenny Breau as examples of fingerstylists who are indeed harmonically complex and are or were great improvisors as well.
No Tommy is not faster than Doyle. Do you play guitar? Are you a musician? Why do guitar players or fans have to succumb to the level of "comparison" arguments? Hear alot of pianists comment like this?
What planet are you on. No Tommy does not win hands down. For that matter there are many great guitarists out there. You Emmanuelistas have got to get a life. For god sakes branch out. Listen to some other players: Roland Dyens, Birelli Lagrene, Philip De Gruy, Larry Coryell, Sylvan Luc, Phillip Catherine, Ron Eschete, Joe Diorio, John Abercrombie, Yameshita, Duke Levine, Tommy Jones (rip) Lenny Breau (rip) Johnny Smith, Howard Alden, Jack Wilikins, Jimmy Bruno, Pat Martino... hundreds more.
He hits those harmonic notes so precise it sounds like a keyboard. Amazing

This guy's a magical genius.
When he pulled the string up with his finger on❤144 145 time stamp was electrifying❤❤❤❤
still my favorite player alive
How did he do those harmonics so fast? I swear the man is super human! He's also a great christian, patriot, and is funny as heck too. I caught one of his clinics at West L.A. Music a few years back. Awesome!
That sweet little turn around near the end blows my mind every time.
Doyle is awesome

Still enjoying Doyle's performance in 2022
This is the earliest video of him I've seen. Amazing!!
Wow. He's amazing.
Awesome! Can't stop shaking my foot, it's so catchy!!
A living example of what can be done with a guitar! He's one of a very few and from what I understand a truly nice and genuine person!
Just a touch of flamenco pick at the end...very nice!
What fabulous harmonics !!!
WOW! WOW! ☆☆☆☆☆

oh man, love it, never thought about blues...but it´s great!
how much hairspray does it take to look that cool.God bless Doyle and his family.
I'd have my own game show if I could get my hair to that.....You go Doyle!
Amazing stuff. The guitar sounds like a wurlitzer electric piano in parts.
I'm torn between being inspired and giving up right now because I'll never be that good. He playing how the guitar should be played like a good pianist e.g. great mix of bass lines, chords, runs, rhythm, melody.

TAB dont matter. Just not doable for most of us. 😣
