      So there's been debate about this. Bear in mind I am no magician. However I agree with the people who think the one guy does manipulate the card to a certain position in the deck which Peter then finds and palms during the beginning of the routine. Then when he gets smacked in the back of the head he ducks down and brings his face close to his hands. The thought is he slips the tape up JUST A TAD and slides the card into his mouth then.

    Yeah, they purposely made it look like a card switch at the end to mislead them into thinking that was how it was done. Because there was no reason to hold it with tongs only to then grab it in his hand in a motion that shows sleight of hand. Not trying to spoil the trick, but unfortunately there was only one real way I think he could get it into his mouth so it's not something I consider a "magician's code exposure":
    At 5:57 You can't see it because they're focusing on the talking magician, but when he goes to grab the cards from the taped up guy, he hands him the card that was folded up. After he is smacked on the head, he leans forward all the way down. This was to cover up the fact that he was putting the card into his mouth. He must have been licking the tape to make it wet enough for him to be able to open his mouth beneath it and slide the card in very quickly and perhaps try to fix the tape.
    You can see the tape at 4:24 is slightly lower on his face (near the bottom of his chin), while at 7:18 when he's cutting it off it's a bit higher due to him having to open his mouth.
    I applaud them for doing the bluff at the end, even if it was a bit unconventional.. but hey they did Fool Penn & Teller and were indeed entertaining. Nice vid man.

    Of course there’s a card switch. Check this out.
    At 4:13 he pulls the card up and then hits it down and covers bottom of deck with left hand. The card is slightly sticking out but still in middle of deck. He then puts it at the bottom as he straightens the deck. That’s why he doesn’t worry about the numbers that Penn picks because his card is at the very bottom.
    He asks him twice to pick a number from 5-15. Maximum number of cards they’d have to get rid of is 30 to give the impression that the trick could fail if the card is somewhere around the middle. Around 26 (+/-4). There are 52 cards in the deck so the trick is safe.
    At 4:40 bottom card is folded by taped guy (look at his index finger) it presses where the two sides of card meet when folded. Index finger stays pressing even as he throws cards during count.
    At around 5:02, he does the second fold. Needs both hands and is covered by cover magician. At 5:25, taped guy puts folded card into right back pocket
    At 7:28, cover magician reaches for right back pocket of taped guy for folded card after pulling card from mouth. His left hand is closed.
    At 7:32, he has two folded cards in left hand and throws the one from the mouth into jacket using pinky finger and marriage finger, leaving one folded card

    The guy shoves the card into his mouth when he is slapped in the back of his head.
    Then the other guy covers the entire card with his hand for a full second while holding the card up for Penn and Teller. This lead them to believe they did a very obvious switch at the end.
    But that was the red herring. Penn and Teller got played, and brilliantly so.

    • @DL-kc8fc
      @DL-kc8fc Před 4 lety +2

      Very right - after hitting the head and bowing, he put the card in his mouth. The adhesive tape must be wrapped just under the nose so that the exposed chin protrudes. In places where the mouth is, the tape at the bottom is non-sticky (very easy to adjust). If the man lowers his jaw, he can put the card in his mouth. Try it at home. I originally thought the tweezers-hand card had been replaced, but if it was just a false guide, the only way was to slap and bow. ))

    Ok My take. First the Red Herring was just too obvious of a setup and just done for P&T. There was no reason when he removed the card to then cover it up with his hand except to create the obvious card switch. Which would have actually been a bit of a disappointment and not much of a trick at all for P&T. All the horseplay gave all the time in the world to pass the folded card to his brother. I agree there was some lotion of his face to make the tape actual not very sticky. In fact the part of the tape that went over his mouth might have not been sticky from the start and just the wrapping hold it on tight. I think the brother placed the card in this mouth about 6:01. At that point he is hit in the head and then does a complete bow where his face can not be seen. This gave ample time to slip the folded card under the tape (which IMHO was not stick) into his mouth.

    They did the first season in the UK because ITV approached the pair about doing the show for them. ITV did not want to produce a second season, despite good ratings. The show was syndicated to the CW in the USA and it did very well, so the CW asked P&T for more seasons, so P&T produce the show in their Las Vegas theatre. That is part of the reason for the big gap in time between season 1 and 2.

    As for the duct tape, I wonder if this trick could be probably done with plastic wrap, which is very revealing and therefor more convincing in my opinion. Not sure if it could be used as convincing blindfold, but if we could see his eyes shut...
    And it is not that damaging to one's hair;)

No, I have never heard of these guys (Brynolf & Ljung). No, Ljung is not pronunced L-jung but Jung/Young in Swedish. Yes, that was a nice performance.

    off topic here, but I often wonder why no one ever talks about my two favorite magicians (aside from p&t)...michael close and ricky jay. aside from being master performers, they are both amazing writers, philosophers, story tellers and decent human beings to boot.
    i defy anyone to find a close up performance that compares to 'ricky jay and his 52 assistants.' and no one even talks about that amazing show anymore. miss you, ricky.

    Fool Us was shot in England because it's a British show, produced and commissioned by ITV in England in 2011. Penn and Teller didn't invent the show and then decide to take it to England - ITV invented the show and invited Penn and Teller.
    The show was cancelled by ITV after one series, and then 4 years later the CW decided to make an American version.

    • @JasonParkerMagic

      Simon Burford but does advertising mean that the show was invented by ITV? And not an idea by Penn & Teller themselves?

    • @simonburford9306
      @simonburford9306 Před 4 lety

      Jason Parker From Wikipedia: The pilot of Fool Us was first commissioned by John Kaye Cooper, the controller of entertainment for ITV.[5] In February 2011, it was announced that due to good viewing figures, a series of eight episodes had been commissioned, and would be produced by September Films and 1/17 Productions.[6] The eight episodes were shot in a ten-day filming block, and began airing in June 2011.[7]
      It was announced on 28 June 2012 that ITV had cancelled the show, despite averaging 4 million viewers, higher than the norm for the timeslot.

    • @JasonParkerMagic
      @JasonParkerMagic  Před 4 lety

      Simon Burford so... “commission” means to order or authorize the production of something. This still doesn’t say it was invented or created... (that the idea came from).... ITV. In fact in the same Wikipedia page it shows in the far right column that the 4 creators were: Penn, teller, Peter Adam Golden, Andrew Golder. So it seems the idea for the show came from these 4. I haven’t been able to dig up anything else simply by googling yet.... I wish there were an article written to describe the moment the idea was conceived and by who....

      @gnomeandgarden6157 Před 4 lety

      It's not duct tape; it's gaffer's cable tape. Looks the same, but it's made to not leave an adhesive residue on floors or walls (i.e. lower tack). The lost hair likely was pulled out because it was caught between the layers as it was wrapped around.

    that "hint" for switch was SO obviously intended its ridicolous.
    BUT, I must say, Id FORBID this kind of thing, throwng clues. Becase in the end it wil be 50/50 if you go with it.
    Do they do it for you to thnk thats the method, or is it a double buff, you to think they want you to think so its obviously not that, but they knew exactly that you will think that so they did it by that method and exaggerated the move, etc, etc.
    That should be forbidden by RULES. First tought to me was okay, thats excluded, so its something else.
    Its just not fair to alloud the performer to do this. Because, as I sad, in the ed it will be like shooting penalty in football, performer will look where P&T tend to "throw themselves" and shoot the other side, and P&T will try blindly switch here and there to catch the ball.
    Dont get me wrong, I think thats the good thinking in the start, by the magicians who first did it, but than, after it was used as a method, it should be forbidden.

      I believe he put it in himself when bent over after the slap. You can see at some stage, if you look closely, that the lower jaw is actually not fixed to the duck tape as he moves it slightly. That allows him to slide the folded card in underneath.
