Have you noticed your Mercedes' front end bouncing a little too much in your everyday driving? Are the smallest potholes in the road enough to send a shock up your spine? Your front struts and springs may have given up. Luckily, we've prepared an easy to follow video on replacing the front struts and springs on W203 and W209 Mercedes Benz's, but the general idea is the same for cars.

DO NOT remove the sway bar link bolt as described. DO NOT turn the 7mm hex head while holding the bolt. You WILL tear the rubber boot! Hold the 7mm hex and turn the nut.
yeah this is a bit of a hack. if people follow this guide they will be using that lifetime warrenty soon enough
Is the sway bar link bolt the same on the left and right?
@@johnadria3336 yes it is
Here are the torque specs for everyone, don't know why this was so hard for FCP to include in the video or description:
Sway Bar links = 60nm (top and bottom)
Strut to wheel hub = Top bolt 100nm + 90 degrees, Two bottom bolts 110nm
Bolt on top of the strut = 60nm
Piston securing nut = 20nm
I guess FCP did not used a torque wrench. And the strut bearing is probably not seated correct in the wing well.
This is the only video on CZcams that explains how to fit that little threaded retainer in the strut mount.
Owning an 09 W209, I enjoyed seeing the work, saving the links and parts reference, as one day I will upgrade my suspension as per...
Thank you for showing Project CLK550, a very good video KUDOS!
You're welcome! Happy to help!
Great video. I've seen some others but this is the most complete one and most informative. I am about to change mine but I was worried about the last 'push' you need to apply into the bearing to get in the nut ring. What a pitty I did not see this before. Anyway I'll go on with it next weekend
Excellent, clear camera angles. Thank you so much for the attention to detail.
Made it look sooo easy!
Great video! Make some more videos on the W203 4matic.
You're video really helped me out thanks a lot that's cool I really appreciate it
Do you have a video for a mb w212 2011 shocks and coil spring replacement? Or is it very similar ? I would rather watch these than auto doc because you speak and it helps immensely.
Very good stepwise video . Thanks
You're welcome, Ray! Thanks for watching!
What spring compressor tool was used in the video?
Hi ,can I ask which special nut you use for lock ring. Thank you
Are the spring seat mounted at the same orientation for both left and right side struts?
Video would have been more useful if you had used stock springs or standard Bilstein springs which are longer than sport springs. The W203/W209 Strut is known to be the most difficult strut to compress/assemble, and a Baum 1117J compressor (or cheap Chinese clone) usually doesn't suffice. By the way, that spring compressor is NOT to be used with impact/power tools.
You're not kidding. I have a non sport c207, so just about all my suspension is w204 parts. Those springs looked like they could've fit an F350 Super Duty or something.
Standard cheap compressors don't even come close whatsoever.
I have a 2008 CLK350 with sport suspension. I'm gonna use the stock springs on new Bilstein struts. Which compressor do I need?
great video very informative
Thank you!
Does anyone know if they make a “Quick Strut” assembly? Basically a pre loaded assembly with the coil spring installed and compressed. I would rather pay a touch more initially to get a simple plug and play assembly with all new components including coil spring. Safer and probably easier in the long run.
Tha k you!!! Just subscribed!! Question!
What rotors you have???
What’s about the special nut tool? Is the tool required or can a simple Allen tool work?
I have the clk 320 cdi sport with sports suspension, not sure if the correct replacement is thr bilstein b8?
It is always preferable to counter hold the bolt , and turn the nut...not vice versa.
great video!
Thanks, Steven!
Did you use a special tool (c clamp) to reinstall the struts
What brand is the spring compressor it looks a lot safer than the hook on type?
Hello My 2017 GLC X253, spring version has problem since day one with tires noise transmitted to the car body and this goes to all of X253 spring models with all tires and rims, 19" would be the lease. After many exams I believed that the tires noise ran through the front struts to the body. On W205 you don't have this kind of problem so after checking the different you should get the front springs the bent strut profile (front wheel drive) and smaller boot for lower control arms. Do you experience such problem and if so, how you solved it. I am checking if anyone make a steel/rubber strut mount for this model yet. Thanks for your comment
Great
Kindly advise torque specs for all bolts. Thanks!
Hello Carlos, please email products@fcpeuro.com we'll be happy to provide that information.
did you order new springs of Sachs manufacturer ?
Hi guys.
I noticed you don't have the front shocks for w203 c240 2004 wagon on your website.
If you do, kindly respond with the link to the page.
Regards
Where do i get the springs ?
If my 230 6 speed rides tough over bumps, could I get by with just doing struts and not springs? Or since I am doing the job replace everything?
You should be fine with replacing just the struts if the springs are still in good shape. Replacing the struts will make a big difference in ride quality if they haven't been changed.
how far are you supposed to tighten the lock ring? like is there a distence that strut should be compressed to? or just tighten as much as possible ?
Did you ever figure this out? Currently replacing mine and this is the only thing I'm stuck on
I did tighten the bolt in stead of the nut n broke the ruber seal for th link, now is exposed to elements, thanks😡
What compressor was that?
Just did this job in a 2003 clk320 and it ducking sucked he doesn't mention how insanely difficult it is to unfreeze the bolts
Why you didnt buy springs also from Sachs manufacturer ? Are originals from mercedes better ?
At 8.34 , the strut to spindle bolt should have a washer on the head , especially since it is not a flange head bolt.
whent to your webpage it says this page cant be found i really need those suspension kits for my clk 200 kompressor

No mention of torquing any fasteners to factory specs.
Wonder if its the same process for the C55 AMG?
Yes it is.
How do these Struts Ride when OEM new?
I have stock OEM Sachs struts on my Mercedes C32 AMG which have been on the car since previous and in need for new replacement.
My Ride is bumpy and loud over bumps and potholes, figured struts where shot and needed replacement.
Will Sachs Brand Struts Give me a smooth ride like the Stock Mercedes or will I have to go with Bilstein ???
Hello, the Sachs brand is an OE supplier brand and will give you a smooth comfortable ride similar to the Bilstein struts.
5:42 how did u screw it when the thing isnt even out in the open
Hi - the strut mount bearing rubber - this has a fat 'nub' and a thin 'nub' what direction are these supposed to be in ?
Not certain what you are referring to however I'd like to help out. Please email products@fcpeuro.com with an image of what you are seeing and I'll help with the orientation.
How far do you screw the nut down on the strut mount when assembling it together? The step right before threading the lock nut.
There is a stop you will reach where you can not really go any further.
FCP Euro Thanks I am doing a 2006 C230 because the strut mounts are bad, pops when I turn the steering wheel. Your videos are very thorough just didn't know if there is a stopping point.
Can I use the old springs
Yes, if they're in good shape you can reuse them with the new struts.
Can I reuse the old strut mounts?
You can if the condition looks to be ok but we recommend replacing while everything is apart.
My 2003clk 55 is making a squiking noice when turning at slow speeds and going over bumps, why could this be? Only front end of the vehicle
It could be strut mounts or possibly worn control arm bushings.
Hi, do clk350 and clk55 have the same front struts?
yeah if they do
@@nickmlad4677 No, no they do not.
They are interchangeable but definitely not the same.
Hello, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN sachs 300138 and sachs 300139, because in video you put sachs 300139 but in shop for sale is sachs 300138, can I put sachs 300138 for sport w203 ? thank you.
The difference is 300138 is for vehicles without Sport suspension and 300139 is for vehicles with Sport suspension.
@@fcpeuro Is the sport suspension one the same as the OEM CLK55 AMG strut?
How do i get that lock ring socket couldn’t find it on ur site
www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-strut-retaining-nut-genuine-mercedes-0009900365
I got a complete kit for euro cars at amazon for 15 bucks
How many hours are normally charged to have both sides done?
It will take 2-3 hours to replace both sides depending on how familiar you are with the process.
Probably like 2.6 to include an alignment
What is that tool part number for the spring compressor
@fcpeuro
Hi Raoul, we have an older version of this BAUM tool: www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-macpherson-strut-spring-compressor-baum-1117j
what's that spring compressor you're using?
It's a MacPherson Coil Spring Compressor. You can find it listed here - www.ebay.com/itm/MacPherson-Interchangable-Fork-Strut-Coil-Spring-Compressor-Extractor-Tool-Set-/271700623796
cool, thanks!
Hello, can you give me the link of spring compressor? Tagnks
Hi Hrayr, here is the spring compressor kit we used in the video: www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-macpherson-strut-spring-compressor-baum-1117j
And here is a more economically friendly spring compressor tool: www.fcpeuro.com/products/spring-compressor
@@fcpeuro I think the economy ones do not work because the tool braquets are not long enough to clear the strut mount...
@@BisonThe that's the exact problem I just had trying to do mine on a c207 chassis. There is a vid from AutoRepairGuys of that style compressor being used on a w204 chassis though.
2:28I can get them to loosen up, they are stuck... what can i do?
I would try using PB Blaster penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. An impact ratchet will also help break the bolt free.
It's better to use a long breaker bar when removing those bolts .. using a short ratchet won't work, and might break the ratchet itself.
Looks easy but doesn't go inside All the way I buy the complete set just ready to install
Does this lower the Car? by how much?
The car will retain factory ride height after the install.
@@fcpeuro any way to lower springs you would recommend? Or maybe a kit
Lowering springs would be the most effective option if you're looking to lower the vehicle slightly.
