I am actually old enough (63) to remember watching Robert Conrad in the first run on TV of The Wild, Wild West. Also remember watching this episode of Columbo with my late Dad back in 1974. @@mattfoley6082 Conrad was definitely playing Milo "to his own type" toward the end of this episode.
All one has to do is watch Battle of the Network Stars when Gabe Kaplan kicked Conrad's celebrated butt on the track after Conrad got all "Milo" in the program hosts' faces because of his team's ineligible baton pass on the relay that disqualified them from the win. He acted like some spoiled jock from junior high, and they let him pick the way to settle the argument by running solo against Gabe Kaplan, who headed the other team.

This is such an enjoyable episode at so many levels. It shows that Columbo could give Hercule Poirot a run for his "œufs" in the way he induces the means, motive and opportunity that Milo had to take Gene out. The writers also had fun with this one in the way they made footwear such a repeated trope of the plot: the scuff marks on the floor; Columbo's broken shoelace he fixes at Milo's poolside; the mom tying the laces for her son; and, of course, the forensics on the sneakers that were inversely tied that nailed Milo's muscle-bound butt.
It always seemed that Columbo took a lot for granted that the murderer would "go along quietly" at the moment of revelation. A few close calls, but never where Columbo had back up just in case. One of the funniest moments in this episode is when Columbo asks for the information on the accountant and visibly gets annoyed by the computer and the office clerk processing his request. Usually, he is the one getting to annoy everyone else; this time the "shoe gets to be on the other foot!" 🤣🤣🤣 Yup, the writers definitely had foot ware on the mind in this one!!!
