Nimoy could not walk around the block without Shatner saying, “I can do that, too!” Making an album, directing, on and on. I reckon when Shatner saw Nimoy play a totally cold-blooded and unsympathetic Columbo murderer, he began lobbying for his shot to do it, too. He SO wanted this to be a sympathetic, likable killer, he must have lobbied for it behind the scenes. It does seem to be an attempt to one-up Nimoy.

The video tape recorder was key in this episode, but something which most Americans could rarely afford in 1976 when this aired. In fact it wouldn't be until the early 1980s before VCRs would start to become the norm. Ward Fowler showing off his high salary, even though he slightly moans in one line about the amount of tax he has to pay. 1976 was an era when income tax was still very high for big earners, close to 70%.

It is funny how during the episode, the production must have had a break, as in the first part Shatner's fictional character was addressed as Detective Lucerne and then it became Lieutenant Lucerne in the other half of the program. Continuity was never a strong point in Columbo. Episodes were filmed over long period, and most using single camera style.
