"You know something, Columbo? You're a devious man."
"That's what they tell me."
Every so often Columbo drops all pretense and reveals the REAL Columbo: a man who is tough-as-nails, and absolutely impossible to intimidate. The reason moments like that are so great is because they are so rare.
This is one of the best displays of Peter Falk's acting abilities! And this exchange between him and Robert Conrad was such a great opportunity to see two men showcasing not only what tremendous talent each was in his own right, but how tremendous they were together!
Seeing these men who were Premier Hollywood legends on a T.V. show was the entertainment bargain of the year!
Same with Robert Culp, Jack Cassidy, Johnny Cash, Patrick McGoogan, and Robert Vaughn! Each one brought his A game! Some of the very best actors in Hollywood appearing on a T.V. show, and every time it was OUTSTANDING acting!
Columbo was literally "Must See T,V." because you knew on this show they knew they had to bring in the best of the best to play opposite Peter Falk, and they always came through!
The quality of acting for what was "just" TV raised the bar for television.
I think the entire profession, pay scale, and expectations for TV shows in general went through the roof because of the quality that people came to expect after seeing the Columbo series.
And it was amazing to see a little-known Peter Falk, come out of now where as an actor, and have the skill level of acting on par with the very best in the business.
That's right. They were clever enough to have him show anger very few times. Show would not have been what it was if he was losing his temper and raging all the time would it ?
@@chasermalloy7406 Exactly right. What's more, every single time he does something like that it's a calculated move . . . Columbo never says or does anything with a suspect that isn't COMPLETELY in control. He's just the ultimate badass.
It's a great character, he plays a bumbling fool , yet he shows he's sharp as a tack when it comes down to it , don't make shows like this anymore , miss those days 🙏
Another classic moment like this was on the episode with Leonard Nimoy. Apparently the show’s creators didn’t like these displays of anger from Columbo, but I’ll side with Peter Falk that they’re great stuff as long they’re only done on special occasions. (And by the way, the show’s creators had him do this way back in the original “Prescription: Murder,” in the scene where Columbo confronts the killer’s girlfriend!)
You can almost feel a genuine - and I mean genuine - anger and disgust in Columbo's entire demeanor. And it hits because it comes as a total surprise. Great acting by Falk.
Janus: “your health program didn’t last very long did it?”
Columbo: “long enough”
🥶🥶🥶
Is it just me or does watching Columbo videos calm the nerves and make you feel at ease with the world?! 😍
Yes he has a very calm voice, which is very relaxing
I feel likewise. It is reassuring to see him doing things right and take such a rogue down a notch
I always say watching Columbo is my self-care.
Absolutely! He rights the wrongs in the world giving everyone a sense of normality & hope, imo.
Take care! ❤️
Its like a substitute ASMR I always listen to clips before bed 🤣
"What gives you the right?"
"This Sir, this is a warrant. This gives me the right" LOL
Someone said watching Columbo is like cuddling up to an old blanket you love. i agree there is something comforting watching episodes on Sunday in England, with a cuppa and something nice to eat.
I'm def in that camp. I prefer the older ones from the 70s - even though I'm an 80s kid I used to watch these back in the day and it's a nice, nostalgic way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Peter Falk was a GENIUS at playing Columbo!
Truly born for that role.
You can hear the anger in Columbo's voice which is a nice touch.
Yeh, he didn’t get cross that often did he?
Yeah the one with lenord nemoy is the best columbo gets really angry which he hardly ever shows
He also got angry with Lee Grant’s step daughter when she planted evidence and insisted that Columbo knew Lee Grant murdered her father.
@@GillAgainsIsland12 and she slapped him too so she was treading on thin ground.
It is a nice touch. I think it was because they were smart enough to make an angry Columbo a very rare thing. I think it happened 2 or 3 times that I saw. They knew the show wasn't going to be about a cop running around yelling and screaming and pulling his gun out to threated people. Plenty of that available already. Pretty clever weren't they ?
Rest in powerful peace
Peter Falk 🙏

I love those rare occasions when Columbo gets so fed up with his suspect that the lets his facade drop and clearly displays his contempt for them. My favorite example is probably when he confronts Leonard Nimoy.
Yeah, when he slammed on the desk, and really got the guy’s attention. That was funny and surprising at the same time.
This guy is so arrogant that he deserves no respect
Funny I was going to say the same thing. I like the episodes when he actually gets angry with someone. It only happened two or three times I think.
Nimoy was so mean!
You could kill 5 people, including his wife, and he will still show empathy... So it takes a special kind of scum to get under Columbo's skin.
You really don't want to get on Columbo's bad side. When his patience is exhausted, look out.
"I don't know what visions you have when you look at your cigar ashes." Love this line by Conrad's character. The fact that Columbo can smoke a cigar in the hospital reveals how far things have changed, too.
"What the hell gives you the right Columbo?!!" Super arrogant Conrad
"This..... (Showing warrent) This gives me the right." Columbo in full "I gotcha" mode.
This is one of a handful of times where Columbo apparently had no sympathy for the culprit.
I never can get over people threatening a Homicide Detective.
Yeah, there is a formula in the writing where the real killer reveals themselves by disrespecting Frank.
But it is a rare treat when Frank dishes back!
That's Lt Columbo to you, sir!
‘Long enough’ is an amazing line and delivery
That look at 2:55 after Janus said 'what i meant to say' is so good Columbo can smell the bullshit off Janus
Yes!!! The battle of wills between Columbo and Milo is truly captivating!!! And I'd also like to point out the scene with Columbo and Mrs. Stafford in the hospital room is equally brilliant. She's so vulnerable in that moment and Columbo is nothing but kind to her. He genuinely cares and it's so powerful. Great performances all around in this scene!!!
Very well said. My feelings exactly.
Amongst the reasons Columbo lasted so long as a show, besides the superb acting, casts, and plots, was the idea of a humble ordinary everyday cop getting the better of rich arrogant people who thought they could get away with murder.
This guy was as full of himself as it gets. Love how Columbo made sure he was shoe-horned into a corner with no escape in the end. 😉
The guy in this episode is Robert Conrad, who starred in the hit tv series Wagon West.
@@trhansen3244 I think you mean "Wild Wild West."
And Robert Conrad was the lead in "Ba Ba Black Sheep."
Robert Conrad didn't have to reach exert himself in this episode, he had ego & attitude to spare. I still enjoyed him in "Ba Ba Black Sheep"🙂
Take care! ❤️
Pun intended? Columbo was just tying up loose ends...
This episode is in my top 5 Columbo episodes ever. Robert Conrad was in incredible shape. Love when he sees the woman tying her sons shoe. Case solved
tying the shoe was a reference to something mentioned beforE? I didn't see entire episode :/
@@maciejguzek3442 when he saw the mother tying her sons shoes he knew Conrad was the killer. Conrad tied the dead mans shoes.
it's in my top 5 as well. my fav is Playback with Oskar Werner
@@preving that was another great ending. He had the invitation on the table. Oskar Werner was terrific in it
@@preving my favorite is try and catch me with Ruth Gordon.
These longer Columbo sequences are so great, to the point writing and precise acting it's something you just don't see in TV drama anymore.
"You know something Columbo? You're a devious man."
"That's what they tell me."
Stone cold. One of the few times Columbo dropped the act entirely and you get a glimpse of the real Columbo, and the righteous fury he gets when innocents are put in danger.
The other fellow is the one who is devious
And that is why he is so loved, he locks on!
You know, I can't help but think how powerful that voice must be in his personal life. I mean Columbo shows empathy to murderers, scoundrels and scumbags alike. So using such a quiet and stern voice towards his family, saying something like "honey, get your coat" would most likely speak volumes of the danger he's getting them out of... no questions asked.
His eye also wasn't "cockeyed" when he said it.
@@vjm3 glass eye 👁️ Peter Falk had a glass right eye.
I watched this episode. I gotta admit, at this point, Columbo was pretty much closing in on Janus in terms of evidence and his guilt, and yet Janus STILL tried to explain himself away. Dude’s got heart.
He was so sure he committed the perfect murder.
@@GillAgainsIsland12 I gotta say, a lot of the Columbo criminals really do not think through and carefully plan their murders, it’s just a heat of the moment murder.
I love when they get frustrated with him🤣
"I don't care what visions you see when you look at your cigar ashes" Great lines from Conrad in this episode. He played a great douchebag
I remember this as it's not very often the lieutenant gets annoyed but on this occasion the suspect was so full of himself he deserved it!!excellent..keep em coming please 🙏
I was just watching this episode from season 4 earlier today "an exercise in fatality"
“That’s what they tell me.” What a great comeback.
Love it when the Lieutenant shows his teeth
Got to love Falk as Columbo. And think of the guest stars. It got to be a signature feather in an acting career to appear on this show. Never grows old.
Smoking in a hospital!? That was surely from another time
"An Exercise in Fatality" was made in 1974 and smoking was commonplace in hospitals then. Only by 1991 did the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations mandate that American hospitals go smoke-free, effective December 31, 1993.
@@jamesfeldman4234 - it is only so strange to see, I remember how it became illegal to smoke the first minutes of our lunch break, back in the 70'ties I think, and everyone was shocked, we protested like crazy, but our management said people should be able to eat without the smoke, and no one understood, as late as around 2010 a lot of my colleagues smoked, today no one is smoking, it is really another world now
Wow, smoking in the hospital!!! Milo Janis was so arrogant & sure of himself, it was a pleasure seeing the Lieutenant bring him down!! 👌
IMO, those folks in that hospital waiting room may have been thinking: "This is better than a TV soap opera, lol" Actually, I believe this was a time before televisions were abundantly present in hospital waiting rooms and people would read, I.E. magazines, use a pay phone or talk to each other, instead. Great Columbo episode....... Thanks... 📺🕵️🔍
Or smoke...
I was thinking if they were police personnel they would’ve heard him admit to being willing to deny what he told Colombo initially.
No, Columbo is not a "devious man," contrary to Milo Janus's claim, even if Columbo acknowledges that some people say that about him. Janus is projecting because a devious person is dishonest and misleading, which is how Janus spends most of his waking hours. The correct description of Columbo's nature is that he's an "artful man." Columbo isn't dishonest or misleading with his criminal suspects because Columbo always lets his suspects know that he knows much more about them and what actually happened than the suspects want Columbo to believe. Instead, Columbo is extraordinarily clever and skillful and practices his investigations in a crafty or cunning way only as necessary to catch the criminals.
Throughout all his cases, Columbo sensed his suspects are guilty, & he also sensed the guilt within their crimes, this explains the humbling-'somewhat' bumbling gentleman demeanor he displays to show them that he's merciful to them. With every range of evidence he presents, he gives suspects chances to confess their murders, or he'll expose them cordially. This is one of a few cases in that The Lieutenant unleashes his contempt & belligerence because suspects like Janus displays his arrogance, & narcissism in front him & the victim's widow believing he's "untouchable" & "immune" to consequences despite overwhelming evidence. This vile, smug behavior bruises Columbo's empathy. for it toxifies his tender-heart in the human spirit. When Columbo goes after the rotten ones, he literally throws the book at them.
Or sometimes Columbo conceals info he has on a suspect in order to keep the suspect at ease and continue to self-incriminate without being aware that they he/she is doing so.
@@laurenceschwartz8606 That's right, Laurence. But when Columbo conceals something, I would call that artfulness, not deviousness or deceitfulness. For example, in Swan Song, Columbo believes that Johnny Cash's character, Tommy Brown, made and used a parachute to set up his alibi, but he never discloses any knowledge he has to date or his suspicion about the parachute to Tommy. Instead, he tells Tommy that his team will need to search everywhere during the plane's route for the missing thermos. Columbo knows that if Tommy were innocent he wouldn't care about the thermos. But, he knew if Tommy was, in fact, guilty, he'd recognize that there was a risk that the parachute might be discovered and his worries about it would cause him to go back to the scene of the crime to find and destroy the parachute.
Colombo was a devious man because he hides his intelligence. He’s a very intelligent person presenting himself as a fool.
« If you’re smart, I won’t be seeing you again ». Now that’s a line you don’t say to lieutenant Columbo. Because like he said in another episode, « Homicide, that’s my specialty. »
That's practically a dare. Shows you how little Janos knew who he was dealing with.
One of the best episodes. ...Robert Conrad sensational
Columbo is devious & smart
Does anyone remember columbo's first name in the show?
One of the best episodes. My 4th favorite of all them.
That period from and including 'Swan Song' through to 'Playback' we had arguably the seven best consecutive episodes of TV drama ever.
"That's what they tell me."
Columbo became 007 right there. So cool and collected.
Smoking inside of a hospital... that's how you know this shows an old classic.
Every time I tie my shoes I think of this episode
I love this show so much , just can't get enough of Peter Falk ... " Just one more thing ." He was such splendid actor as I surely miss him . May he RIP 💐🌺🌼 🌻🌷🌹🌸
Columbo had balls lighting a cigar in a hospital waiting room!
😂👏👏👏👏 Love this episode!! Love this scene. I hope you load the scene where Mrs. Stafford and Milo are at the restaurant and she throws a drink in his face. One of my top five episodes. Coincidentally, "Suitable for Framing" with Ross Martin is in my top five as well. Also, I loved Wild Wild West.
This rumpled, soft-spoken man is the most dangerous adversary ever created in a work of fiction.
Alot of people underestimated Columbo due to his appearance but he was no idiot! I like when he would shut somebody down with "you murdered so & so, I know it & you know it". I liked earlier episodes best.👍😄
He was no idiot. Understatement of the century.
Most feared words ever: Just one more question, sir.
Columbo looks like he's one shower away from homeless! Gotta love 'im!
Peter Falk always slow walks the murderer down and then he nails them in the end. And Robert Conrad was toast in the episode "A Exercise In Fatality."
"If you're smart, you won't be seeing ne again.."
Columbo-Hold my cigar. Now give it back...
You could smoke in a hospital back then, lol? That is hilarious 🤣🤣

Please! Make Columbo available to be purchased on CZcams or iTunes. I can’t believe there is no way to watch this outside the US
The other people in that sitting area: 👀👀👀
He IS a devious man, and he's going for the jugular.
I love these little, rare, savage moments where the act has gone out the window. He hates this guy's guts!
And Columbo is such a good hearted soul, you have to go the extra mile (beyond just killing someone) to get him to hate ya guts.
If Milo hadn't tried to create A "perfect alibi" , he might have gotten away with it. But, of course, if the murderer doesn't make a mistake, there wouldn't be an episode.😂😂😂
When they say he can't prove anything, that's what you know he's got them.
Cigar in a hospital. Those were the days!
You know that you are in trouble when Columbo not only lets you know what he thinks of you, but he does it in anger. Columbo, even at his most courteous and respectful will, more often than not, let some of the killers he faces know the straight truth.
To The Food Critic who murdered his blackmail victim: "I admire your talents, but I don't like anything else about you"
To Lee Grant's character, "You have no conscience. You can't conceive of anybody being any different than you are, and you're greedy."
4:00 Its always the smallest clues or things in his investigations that end up yielding the biggest results for his case, therefore solving it.
Columbo losing his temper for a change
Great writing. They make columbos character like he is sloppy and unorganized yet underneatg the facade he is extremely intelligent and never one to be underestimated. He loves to make ppl think hes weak and easily intimidated, but in reality hes one never to be messed with, the anger scene was great, it showed sometimes he cares so much about justice and ppl that he loses composure and goes out of character and shows his true emotions, when he gets angry and shows it, hes priceless.
The irony of the ADR line at 6:09 😂
Ooh!!! Great catch!!!
I really like that episode! It has a realistic touch to it. The murderer is much more of middle class type of guy (atleast thats how he behaves) and Columbo is far more sincere. The ending is very good, because the gotcha-proof can hold on on court and is still genius-like.
Hahaha that poor chick with the magazine
He's guilty of wearing 1970s "leisure suits".
Columbo’s earlier interaction with the lady at the information desk was a joy to watch. 😂😂
I love that hospital scene, nice pick! I remember this episode, I didn't catch how he got him the first time I saw it, but after that it has become one of my all time favorites.
Knock this battery off my shoulder!
A man of focus and dedication to his job.
im surprised the doctor didnt light up lol he looks like a rough kinda guy lol
The first time I saw a band on the cigar that Columbo is smoking, I still can not figure out the brand. I know that they were the cheapest that he could find, but I’d still love to smoke one of them.
A classic scene from the best season #4 of Columbo.
Back in the days when you could puff on a fatty cigar while strolling through a hospital.
It's the sutble things. Normally you see Columbo walk in and be all talkative, taking his time to reveal he's a detective but here he just opens straight up with his badge cause he's concerned about her.
Wow, Columbia has the full acting range, he is convincing being silly, sentimental, and downright furious like in the hospital scene. Well done columbo, I’ve never seen him be so angry!
Columbia?
When Columbo gets serious.
Great Épisode
"that's what they tell me" oh my god just destroy me
I remember when this was first run. I was still a kid in school and was not allowed to stay up until the end since it was Sunday and a school night. I had to ask my classmates how it ended. Had a hard time having it explained to me that Janus made a sworn statement that proved he was guilty.
In the UK it aired at teatime on a Sunday if I remember right.
"since it was Sunday and a school night"?
Were you in night school?

When you could smoke in a Hospital
Columbo smoking his cigar in a hospital? Guess in the old days doctors and nurses smoked cigs all the time. Smoking outside on our local hospital property is even prohibited now.
Janis: Columbo, if you ARE smart, I won’t be seeing you again.
Columbo: Just one more thing!
Conclusion: some people REALLY don't know what is good for them. Picking a fight with Columbo is anything but good.
The Doctor, actor Micheal Fox was a vet in another Columbo episode!
Smoking cigars in the hospital. Why did they ever stop that.
Because Clinton went after the tobacco industry to take the heat off problems in his presidency.
probably to help out people with respiratory diseases as well as those with weakened immune systems, as you would expect to find in hospitals
I don't suppose anyone remembers the name of this episode and what season by chance? I suddenly feel the need to add to my dvd collection. Ive always enjoyed Columbo.
