Baba-Nyonya only for descendent of 1st wave of migrant from China from 16th century that married local woman. They are Baba-Nyonya. Descendent 2nd wave migrants from China in 18th century married local are not considered Baba-Nyonya. However, some descendent from 2nd wave had assimilate into either Malay, Chinese or Baba-Nyonya. They are Peranakan, at the time used by Malay in Penang to differentiate themselves from half-breed. In modern Malaysia 21st century, mixed race children follow the race of their father.

@@sama4112 Peranakan is a culture with a history, but a person does not have to be exactly this mix or exactly that mix. Some are darker, some are lighter. But, most are Chinese/Malay, Chinese/Thai, etc. Also, there are Indian Peranakans, who are descended from Indian people who migrated to the area and adopted aspects of Chinese and Malay culture while retaining Hindu heritage.

Sebab dahulu aktivitas antara negeri-negeri selat (terutama Singapura) dengan Batavia sangat intens sehingga budaya peranakan Cina Indonesia pun dibawa pula ke negeri-negeri selat, termasuk Kebaya Encim yang akhirnya menjadi mode baru peranakan Cina menggantikan model baju kurung asli peranakan Cina Malaka.
Batik peranakan pun aslinya dari cina pantura
Hhaha mesti nak klaim. Itu memang pakaian fusion melayu + baba/nyonya. Kebaya telahpun ada lama di Melaka. Sebelum kesultanan melayu melaka lagi. Jawa pake nya tak berbaju hanya pakai lilit badan
Catatan paling awal kebaya dari melaka bukan jawa
Dari Malaka dulu baru ke Indonesia, Indonesia itu yang sebenarnya diaspora malaka, this is facts
Proud to be peranakkan
Authorities, please recognise them. Martabatkan mereka dalam usaha pembinaan negara bangsa
Proud to be of Scottish and Peranakan ancestry
Im one of baba nyonya roots, also malay + mamak + serani blood!! Im melakarian
When I was young, I used to frequent a Peranakan book shop buying comic books. Never I heard the baba & nyonya, owners of the shope speak chinese and according to my parent they can't since they are Peranakan not chinese.
I do have Nyonya Baba Blood lineage ..Malacca, Penang and Pukhet Island. :-)
Peranakan = Baba Nyonya, Cheti and Kristang wajar diberi taraf bumiputera. Mereka berasimilasi dengan penduduk Tanah Melayu. Bukan terasing macam Cina Imigran.
Kau faham tak apa maksud bumiputera? Kau faham tak kalau cina bukan peranakan boleh menyamar jadi peranakan semata-mata untuk dapatkan status bumiputera? Kalau benda tu jadi, golongan peranakan yg 'authentic' pun orang dah tak boleh nak cam
Semoga terus lestari..
What a lovely outfit
pantunnya keren
I think the lass at 3:58 is so beautiful the screen went bonkers.
Little Nyonya brought me here.. and make me thinking, do I have baba and nyonya blood? Since my late grandmas from both side wearing kebaya, kain, hair bun, until their last breath.. My grandparents from south sumatra..
THANK you
Hopefully those Peranakan descendents would still carry on with this Baba & Nyonya tradition despite marrying someone that is out of their culture.
Love baba yoya from indonesia sumatra...
Klau engkau masi sembahyang macam chinese baru baba.
@@aloha3976 maksud elu apaan sihh maaf kaga ngerti gua mah.🤣🤣🤣
Gua kaga sembayang gua sholat kerna gua malayunese sumatra.
Apa pun yang tak boleh kita sangkal, Baba Nyonya masih berdarah 'Melayu' walaupun hanya tinggal setitis..
Betul. Aku keturunan baba.. sistem kt malaysia ni lepas merdeka melunturkan identiti baba.. mane yg islam jd melayu.. tu pasal ad bnyk melayu yg chinese look.. rata² diorang ni asal baba... mane bukan islam jd cina.. rmai lg sedare mare aku yg bukan islam jd cina padahal diorang baba, bukan cina.. jujur aku ckp.. aku klau boleh dasar kt malaysia ni ubahlah.. berikan golongan baba yg bukan islam ni declare sbg bumiputra seperti di sabah dan sarawak.. even yg islam pon declare sbg bumiputra baba juga..
nr6 eh macam tu ke? siam pun dapat bumiputera kot 😱

Ponteh babi 好吃。。。。
Am proud to be Peranakan😎
Sebagai tanda keaslian, saya lebih suka pengacara dlm video ini menggunakan dialek baba nyonya dalam penyampaiannya.Anda perlu lebih berbangga dengan dialek anda sendiri, baru ada keasliannya.
sad that it may be gone sooner than we expect ... sad
Disebabkan oleh keturunan mereka sendiri? Hanya keturunan Peranakan saja yang dapat selamatkan budaya dan tradisi indah ni...
Baba Koh should speak baba not malay. He should be proud of our heritage.
This historical documentary made me think about the 'Rich' merchants in Golden period (16 or 17 century) of Holland and Portagugee, Spain fancy items, and culture. Is there some similarity somehow! More research and comparison are needed! Interesting!

I have been looking the opening song/audio for so so long. Can someone please let me know what is the name of the song at intro? 🙏🏼🙏🏼
I am a Baba. The documentary is good but the background music especially during the narration for the last part is too loud. I hope this part(background music) of the documentary can be redone.

Is it means that Local woman refer to a malay people?so peranakan have a mix blood and Not 100% chinese, right?
@@sama4112 Normal Chinese people usually are not brown skin, however they might inherited brown skin genetics from Thai, Malay, Indian or Arab that already established before the Chinese come here.
@@iamgreat1234 oic, tq for your explanation...
@@sama4112 Peranakan is a culture with a history, but a person does not have to be exactly this mix or exactly that mix. Someone might have mostly Malay ancestry, or mostly Chinese ancestry, but still be Peranakan. A particular person could even be not mixed at all, in recent memory (of course, everyone is mixed somehow if you go back far enough), and still be culturally Peranakan. Some are darker, some are lighter. But, most are Chinese/Malay, Chinese/Thai, etc. Also, there are Indian Peranakans, who are descended from Indian people who migrated to the area and adopted aspects of Chinese and Malay culture while retaining Hindu heritage.

For the Indians(southern Tamil Nadu) would sailed directly to Malacca by the Straits Settlements but for the Hokkiens of Southern China would had to sail past Tumasik(Singapore) to reach Malacca by the North East Monsoon.
kalau di sabah chinese mix dusun jadi "sino"
Wow. Saya baru tahu
Don't forget also the Portuguese.
I really have a problem with how loud the music was at the end to the point I cannot hear the narration..why would you ruin it like this?!
Baba dan nyonya mesi fasih melayu
Bukan malay tapi bahase org asli
Kawan aku cina peranakkan hensem2 muka dia lain dari muka cina yg biasa kita tengok. Lawa2 kakak dia.
Dimana bumi di pijak, disitu langit dijunjung.
I have question, do chinese in Kelantan classify as baba nyonya or peranakan too. Because chinese in kelantan use bahasa as communication and practice malay culture too.
Yes they're called Peranakan as well
Yes they are peranakan.
Nenek peranakan tu org asli bukan malay.
The music is too loud...
rich content, but poorly made documentary, It could have been better. though I like the exotic somehow familiar Chinese vibe of this mixed culture.
Just for sharing
