This is it. This is the perfect Les Paul... for me at least. It has the mojo of the original "bursts" and even though it's too expensive to modify I couldn't help myself. I had to do it. Find out everything about my R8 in the video. Enjoy Gear Corner!

** Why the ANZEIGE (=Ad) message? **
According to german laws everyone has to mark their videos as advertisements as soon as there's a single "subject relevant" product, tag or link in it. Even if you didn't get paid for making that video. Sounds confusing and it really doesn't help the viewer to see which is a paid review and which isn't. But it's the law so whatever...
--- The line of truth: Is this actually a paid review? No it isn't. (I update this line for every video).

Dude, I just cannot see that guitar being second to any other guitar...sounds great and looks fantastic...kudos !
You're totally correct about original 50's Les Paul tone (lucky to have played several) and yours DOES have that tone. Nice!
I have a 2016 Standard Historic 58 Les Paul and the neck is so comfortable. I used to think skinny necks were the way to go, but now they just give me hand cramps.
I've seen hundreds of Bursts and owned 8, I was in the business for 22 years.
1 original 1960 and 1 1959 (Martin Barre's LP) and 6 R9's and R0's your burst color is absolutely stunning!
It's my favorite color burst
Current Gibson Custom Shop output is incredible in quality and consistency. So many people are getting their 'one' now. I also thought I had found the best Les Paul ever in a 2020 model, I thought I would never buy another Les Paul. I sold my 2 other Les Pauls. But I just found an even better one in 2024!
Those maple top "imperfections" are actually the signs of perfection.
My experience here with the 58r is that it sustains forever. It plays like butter and it just did not want to give up its notes
I’m glad that you took your R8 and modded it to your tastes. I have a 2008 R8. I bought it used from a guy that refinished it to look like a Greeny and installed Dimarzio PAF 36 pickups. That got it to a price that I could afford. Guess what, my R8 looks, sounds and plays awesome and I don’t worry about any bumps or bruises it might get when I actually play it on live gigs.
I too recently bought a Gibson Les Paul Standard, which I spent many hours totally disassembling and relicing everything to the point of a satin finish, which looks much more like an original or Custom Shop VOS which I adore the looks and feel much more.
Gibson USA finishes and custom shop finishes are different. The custom shop finish is called a VOS finish or vintage original spec. It's a thinner finish .
I have bought and sold quite a few axes in the past few years, and by far the best one is my VOS R8. Amazing neck, ridiculously low action with zero buzzing and plays like butter even with 11s. Really resonant too. I was playing it while watching this vlog, and I have to agree, the pots are stiff af--I may have to do something about that. That treble bleed on the neck PU seems to work like a coil split when rolled down. Nice one dude... I like the mods too!
I’ve never seen a Les Paul that can switch in the light between such a full flame to a completely plain top. Very cool.
Often the difference between an R8 and an R9 is the flame (and the neck size). R8 have less flame but some, like Kris' have flame but only at a certain angle. Personally, I love it but the market prefers the heavy flame of the R9.
It’s informally called a peek-a-boo top. I’ve got one on my 60s standard. Love it!
Really ???
@@rivenbeef "Peek a Boo top"... First time I heard that... Been Buying/ Selling & trading Burst since the 70's . But I can see where you're coming from.
You got lucky getting Joe's signature pups. I bought a 2005 CS 58 new. After 15 plus years its still my favorite. Only upgrade was replacing the ABR1 with wire to Historic bridge. Play it all the time. Even has a few dings and dents!
LOVED that rhythm rift you play at 3:46. WOW!
Mine is a Gibson custom 58 reissue as well, but mine is absolutely a plain top. I wish it had some flame, but from what I understand plain tops were period correct until 59, so you got lucky.
You know what I love most about that les paul is your passion for it. It's really your guitar. I have a few like that as well. Fender HM Strat has original body and neck and I swapped everything else. Love that thing, so can relate. I also didn't notice the imperfections until you started pointing them out. I did notice body was duller but was just thinking it was older than it was.
I have yet to find my Les Paul. I have gone through half a dozen. I have moved more into ESP single cut. I will probably stay there. More of a modern take on a Les paul. Like you said weight, but I also love thinner neck.
Hey one thing though maybe video for future. I have always been anoyed les paul bridge saddles dig into my hand. Have heard people file or round them but never seen it.
Your comment on sticky necks hits home and most Les Pauls have sticky necks it would be worth a lot for an LP without a sticky neck and because of this video I am driving a few hundred miles to look at a 58 Custom Shop with ultra light Murphy aging. I'll let you know how if I get it.
I recently added a treble bleed circuit (capacitor & resistor) on my 50’s wired LP and I absolutely love it. Can’t believe I waited so long to do it! Great video, Kris.
Hi Daniel the 50's wiring should take care of the need for a treble bleed which is why it's so popular. But either way if it works for you that's all that counts.
What value did you use? Any resistor in series/parallel with it?
I used to be a purist about Les Paul wiring but after watching your video, I decided to try the treble bleed mod. Had to put a 150k resistor in series to smooth out the taper but the neck pickup is very useable now
Great vid! I smiled as I watched you talk about aging your R8...... I aged my R9 and I recognise that reluctance to speak about it openly, for fear of being judged 🤣. Well your R8 looks great!
That's my favorite type of HC sunburst. The brighter the red, the less I like it. This one's perfect!
Best lp I’ve ever heard on CZcams
It would be rude and selfish of me to agree. But I really really love this guitar, soooo 😅😆
Mine is being delivered tomorrow, you have me very excited after watching this , thanks !
Gorgeous guitar and bravo for having the guts to tone down and check the finish.
Couldn’t agree more on the 58’s vs ‘9s and ‘0s. Although I was born in ‘59, I’ve got big hands and love thicker necks and don’t care for flame so the 7th Lester I’ve ever purchased (4 are still around) is a 9.2# ‘21 R8 VOS in Lemon burst. Custom Buckers sound excellent to me and although I have a set of Tim Shaws from ‘85 I’ve no longer plans to put them in.
Must admit though if I had to run away and could only grab one I’d have a hard time deciding whether to grab her or the ‘22 R4 I snagged new that weighs 8.2#. The CS P90’s are perfect to my ear and it would likely come down to which I played last.
Gibsons CS hit it out of the park with these, worth every nickel I paid.
She looks and sounds great ! Very burst-like in the openness/brightness/bite.
Beautiful looking and sounding Les Paul Kris! I have a 1989 Flametop Standard with the same type top as yours, it has very even flame top to bottom and edge to edge, but the pattern is always changing angle to angle. I bought my guitar new, and it has been my #1 guitar for the last 31 1/2 years, great video, keep them coming!!
That must be a great guitar, congrats! Thanks for the kind words! Cheers
Kris you did great job customizing the guitar for yourself. That finish is cool, It’s a unique top. You now have a Kris Barocsi Collector’s Choice.😎
Hi Kris, thanks to let us participate onto your gear. Q: After crackling - did you noticed a difference tone wise or was it still the same?
Cheers from Münster
Frank
Szia!
I guess I’m at least as “finnyàs “(love the word)as You Chris when it comes to tone....unfortunately I can’t even get close to your tasteful and ripe playing...but hey...same here....I’m never satisfy either...and at the end of the day what else should let us improve?!Satisfaction?!....Nope....Satisfaction makes us lazy 😉🤟🎸
I really love that top! It is awesome that it can be viewed as either a Plaintop or at different angles a flametop!
Really sweet R8! Those bigger necks take a little getting used to but i like em.
The one guitar I sold that I regret is a 2016 R8. Kick myself about that alot but will have to get another!
That riff at like 4:09 how are you doing that so perfectly lol.
Sounds killer 👍I recently went 58 Murphy Lab Heavy aged with Wildwood underwound pups. It shines over my 59 CS. Best LP I’ve ever played. The MLs are something special. Way less nitro and sooo resonant. It sings without even being plugged in. I prefer the fatter neck. Had both a 58 and and 54. It was the thinner neck and frets on the 59 I wasn’t nuts over. Did you use muriatic acid to dull/age the hardware? Works great.
I like the color combination of the pickups!
There were some original bursts with a thick warm tone . Many were quite bright and had a tele on steroids sound but there were also bursts that were thick and fat . The pafs played a big role in this. Some were 7k and some were 9k . If you listen to pages number 1 les paul in live in 1970 its very fat with a healthy dose of compression . Latter in early 72 when his bridge pickup failed and he replaced it with a Gibson t top his tone become much more open sounding.
Yes ,Pagey's Guitar had the low wind 7.5k/7.6k TTop in the bridge and the Overwound Circa 8.6k Alnico 2 PAF in the neck.. ..The secret to that neck PUP was the unusually weak magnet (really weak even for an A2)..It barely drove the coils!..In New Zealand I was lucky to know Clive Coulson..Clive was Jimmys tech and customer of my Guitar shop..Clive had the instrument in his hands daily pretty much..
Congrats!! Very nice! You really describe it all to the tee!!
It's a beauty Kris and it sounds amazing! I think a lot of people overlook the fact that most vintage guitars had relatively low output pickups. I have Seymour Duncan Seth Lover pickups in my Yamaha SBG2000 and I love them. They sound amazing clean or dirty.
I've said it before but I'll say it again, I love the top on this guitar. It's the perfect blend of stripy and plain :-) I think the light relicking you've done also looks great. I can relate to the little dings from your son too. My kids have put so many little indents on my guitars I can't even count them. Some were with drum sticks (ouch) and others were from little Hot Wheels cars.
Seymour Duncan... ( Espically the ones he personally winds, are UNREAL.) & actually quite a deal. & he was/Is the first Custom winder... Get em while you can.. & he can actually play. ( Much better than most P/U Builders. Especially one who uses his initials !! I'm Not even gonna go there ! That, "Other Guy" Can't play ! Yet, Sooo Opinionated.
I bought a 2018 58 Custom VOS to learn to play. No luck learning so I just put it up.
Yes that's a lovely looking guitar.
Your tone at 4:00… glorious! ❤
Wow...you are crazier than I am!? Great video. Really like the guitar. Though I would definitely have the neck treble bleed circuit on a push-pull pot to have both worlds. Also I'd wrap the strings around the stop tailpiece to enhance the slink/feel when tuned to pitch. Add a CertainBass varitone and you will have killer jazz tones. Consider a Black Ice module on setting 3. Killer job man I love it! Cheers.
Your guitar does have crazy flames whrn viewed from some angles.
You're a terrific player.
Super nice guitar Kris! I’ve got an 82 Custom in the darker vintage cherry sunburst! There’s just something about a great playing and sounding Les Paul! And mine is 11lbs 4oz lol even with a 4” strap, it’s tough lol And that’s why I grab the tele more often. Yours definitely has that mojo!
I don’t know what I enjoy the most in your videos, if the history teller part or the playing. You’re a hell of a player!! Are the licks and chord progressions written by you? What are your inspirations and influences? Thanks for another interesting video. I got myself an R8 a few months ago and couldn’t be happier with that guitar. I also feel the same about most of the points you have covered in the video (I like the unpotted custombuckers on mine though)
As much as you love your Teles and that surprised you don't have a Gretsch with minibuckers. My favorite is a G5236, LP fullness with Fender brightness and it's own special magic. 😊
My best friend has the 59 and a 60 custom shop. I played both for hours last weekend. I also played a PRS SE Chris Robertson and Gibson les paul studio at same jam session for comparison. I noticed the 59 was very warm and woody sounding and the studio and Chris Robertson much brighter. All sounded full and fat. I honestly prefer the brightness of the studio and Chris Robertson but if your are playing lead or overdrive vs clean then maybe the 59. The 60 had more bite than the 59 with hotter pickups. All guitars sounded great regardless of price... none sounded better just different. I'd like to try the 58 now...in your video sounds great.
Love the mod on the neck pickup. great idea!
How I undestand your anthousiasm with those 58! I had the necked thinned on mine or let's say reshaped for my hand, also had bigger frets. And I play it through a 2c+, I feel like the luckiest guy in the world!
That's a great example of a guitar! Thanks for the sharing.
I would really like to know what was the secret for making the finish less glossy.
@Jimmy Lundberg thanks!
The ‘58 LP is the one for me. Gorgeous guitar.
Double creme pickups would be the answer to your pickup aesthetics question!
Double cremes have some vibe
Great Video - love your sound, and style Brother! I'm FINALLY getting a VOS Reissue. Wasn't expecting to be like the dog who caught the car. R8? R9? Unfortunately, this doesn't help... all in good jest. Rock-on!
Diese Suche steht mir momentan auch bevor... schön das du deine Paula gefunden hast...
Danke! Viel Glück und vor allem viel Spaß bei der Suche.
Guys I'm Dutch. I only understamd half of this I think. 😂
nice demo of the treble bleed! sounds great
Nice r8...really like the bright tone, and so percussive...
about the egg shape wood grain i have it too on my lp classic and yeah it makes easy to find and stand out awesomely among other guitars 😊😊😊
And btw u wear the wrong shirt LOL
I don't think I could modify a gibson custom shop guitar. Then again I'm not a problem searching for that special tone. Pretty sure the factory model would surpass my expectations.
Awesome guitar, my friend! Congrats!!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Super video. Love that LP I've got a 1957 the neck was kinda sticky but the last 22 years all the sticky stuff is gone no to mention the paint ..thanks for bringing up how you get clarity when turning down the volume..and also have you heard of a Rio grand Texas bbq humbucker? Thanks for a great video...
That's awesome dude. I agree about the pickups sounding better without the covers, although I did make a compromise on mine: I found that winding the pole pieces out a bit higher gets a little bit of that chime back - enough that I can live with it for the aesthetics! I love how you got the finish to crack like that...what is ice spray, how do I do that??
Amazing sounding guitar, I have a burst standard but my pickups don’t sound this good
Re Duncan Antiquities: If they're reversed ie. The Higher Wind 8.4k /8.6k goes in Neck, and Low wind 7.5k goes in the bridge , this set changes character COMPLETELY and replicates Jimmy Pages 1973 'The Song Remains The Same' tones...It can be fine tuned further with a Short Roughcast A5 magnet in the bridge 7.5k pickup... I demo the 'Page post 72 Live Zeppelin tone' on my channel..It's a completely different sound to the Custom Shop Gibson Jimmy Page model tones which are not intended to be Led Zeppelin related..
I did the exact same thing to my ‘59 reissue! So I’m not the only crazy one that does these things ahah.
It did crackle a bit, but less than yours from what I see here. I think I’ll do the same procedure again to intensify the effect
It looks GOOD love all the upgrades
my 2013 LP traditional non weight relief w/ 57 classics is the best production les paul imo
Beautiful. This guitar ended my guitar GAS plain & simple (not that I don’t buy and play any other anymore, but I know I’m settled). Regarding the pot mod you did, does it allow to have a more progressive volume course (log/audio taper?), because even if I have the 50’s wiring I find that most of the volume boost happen between 8 and 10. Thanks and congratulations again for the great content you’re coming with!
There's a lot of flame there, for what's supposed to be a plain top (R8).
Sounds and looks amazing 🤩 My dream guitar is Gibson LP classic in black + ice spray 👌
Love the video. But, what is your first favorite guitar?
In 59 the Gibson bobbin supplier started shipping white instead of black, then went back late 59. For 59-60 PAF's you can see all sorts of color combos so it's kinda a cool surprise that makes you more vintage.
Amazing sound
Love the ice spray thang. Except it did not check like a 50s finish would but still cool...
Very nice guitar you've got there... congrats ! CS R's rule !! Your VOS conversion and fretboard colour came out pretty nice (did you condition the fretboard?) ! Love the sound of the Antiquity: Seymour does a very good job. I have a very seldom used pickup in the bridge position of a ThinLine: a "Jazz" SH2-B (for bridge). Sounds awesome: warmth, articulation, sustain, harmonics overtones and yes... it is an Alnico V. To my ears, much more flexible and performing than the very popular SH-4 which I find more limiting, particularly due to its (very) high output. Cheers !
Thanks for a very interesting and helpful video.
Your ambitions regarding tone and sound are very similar to mine, so it's great to see how to achieve them.
Regarding the surface cracking technique, a friend of mine bought a guitar designed to be a replica of a famous instrument, and he found a local company that specialised in "distressing" instruments to give them the required level of wear and tear, using a wide range of techniques. They finished off the job nicely, making it look like it had seen years of gigging. What a business to be in!
I modified my 58 reissue as well . The custombuckers are kick ass but I wanted something a little hotter and they were scooped in the the low mids so they were quite bright and I wanted a little more output and low mid grunt
I've always wondered about this guitars story since I see on your Instagram.
It is truly beautiful. I would love to own a Les Paul one day.
I see this guitar got your child's seal of approval (star sticker) just like the tele! Kids got good taste :) haha
Thanks a lot! Yeah, my son gave a ⭐️ to all of my favourite guitars. Haha! Take care!
Good Job Kris! Nebenbei noch 'ne Menge von Dir gelernt. Würde Dich am liebsten beauftragen - gegen Honorar natürlich - eine ebenbürtige 58'iger heraus zu suchen, und auf diesen technischen Stand zu bringen.
When I first got my classic in 2007 I had to get used to the “stickiness” of the gloss neck. I had never had a gloss neck and just assumed they were all like that.
That’s really interesting. They must be using a higher quality nitro or maybe they apply it in a different way to not get the stickiness.
Playing a gibson in a fender shirt? You madman!
Haha! I enjoy living in danger. 😆
Kris, how about the crazy custom build by luthier guitars vs. one of these? I tend to be a fan of luthiers over factories because it is a more intimate feeling - you get to know the guy and spec out whatever you want. Also there is always the possibility to go and complain (if any of course_ about QC issues straight at the source.
Anyway, that one is a keeper for sure! Take it easy and rock on!!! :))))) \m/
Lovely guitar and great video .. I too have a 2016 58 vos it’s the best I’ve ever had… very clear and trebly .. 2016’s usually have mineral streaks in the maple top like yours and mine have .. I got mine for a steal and it’s a lefty .. unusual too in the faded tobacco burst .. I was interest in your mods too. Cheers
One of my Les Pauls ways 7.3 kg! Thats way to much...anyway, great video and really tasteful playing! Can you do am in depth demo of your Reff please? Keep it up!
Those duncans are just called skinner burst pickups. There is no antiquitiy version of the skinnerburst
Hey Adam, these were limited versions of the Antiquity series. So it's both Antiquity and skinner burst. It says Antiquity all over the box. But yeah, it doesn't really matter, since these are voiced a little different than the normal PAF Antiquities (I believe these are a little hotter too). Cheers!
Which guitar should come next... your #1 of course (sorry if I missed a video where you've already done this).
@@schlep4730 Hi, I made that video already a few years ago. Here you go: czcams.com/video/zPRCNB8YC_U/video.htmlsi=9VQA0WsQCqYt7Bad
alot of wisdom here especially about people thinking they can just swap pickups etc and get THAT TONE LOL I learned the hard way...its the wood construction weight etc. The actual GUITAR has to be resonant and musical...then good pickups
Thanks so much Chris! And it‘s not like a normal Les Paul sounds worse or anything. They just sound and react to your playing differently. Pick attack, bloom, overtones etc. Different vibes and I prefer this. 😅 Cheers!
Had same issue with my R8 pots, also got the emerson pro pots. The nitro has more plasticizers in it than the old stuff. I have 3 guitars with lacquer and my R8 gets static when I run my hand up n down the neck, like a strat pickguard, only guitar I've had do this, and my only complaint. Lacquer always feels a little sticky compared to poly, I can always tell the finish of a guitar with my fingernail. To be honest if the finish is kept very thin there's no tone difference in the two, it's called placebo. Curious what you used to dull it. Mine is a 2007, they came with some stupid coating to give the VOS finish and it polishes off leaving a shiny new look. I had to replace the double line Japanese Klusens with real single line ones.
Your custom shop does sound absolutely amazing!! The best Les Paul I ever had and still do is my ESP Edwards Les Paul copy! I can’t afford a custom shop, but have had and sold several Gibson’s over the years that all were basically overpriced trash in comparison to my Edwards that cost less than half the price... 😁
Beautiful 58 Kris!!!...that "cracking", btw is from what I've heard called "CHECKING"...?? pretty sure. Really interested in how what exactly you did to remove the "high-gloss" so that they ice-spray will give you the checking as well as making the soft aged gloss look.
We can discuss the VOS finish mod in a Comment Time video. 👍🏻
@@KrisBarocsi when you go into how you did it, I'll look out for it..
@@KrisBarocsi yeah do it! Im interested too.
I’m all about doing whatever to make a guitar the way I want it but what you’ve done is blasphemy haha!
I recently bought an R9, which is basically the same guitar as an R8 besides the neck, and I didn’t change a thing on it! Mine came with Custombuckers and I wouldn’t dream of changing the pickups.
You’re happy with what you’ve done to ur guitar and at the end of the day that’s all that matters. It’s still a good sounding guitar, it’s just....different.
super great sound and i think a part of the secret is your ability to play guitar
Ivw try it myself today an r6,7,8,9. And the one that suit me is r8. From the looks, the neck and the sound. I dunno what happens but the r8 i try have sumthing to do with my taste
Great Kris. Joe Bonamassa said that real old Les Paul had a much more thinner neck that actual reissue ones. Sound great. Thanks
That’s totally true. Both the 59 and the 60 burst had way thinner necks than mine. I gotta be honest, I very much prefer mine but that’s just me. I know Bonanassa likes thinner necks so what ever. Haha
@@KrisBarocsi I think you have to fight more with a chunky neck and that could gives the player a more agressive style. The shape of the neck is the thing that more affect the way you play. I have an ESP eclipse and a Eastman SB59 and the difference of the necks is what makes them more different to play even more than EMGs actives vs Seymour Duncan 59. Thank Kris keep doing great content.
@@bloodreyna6700 This is a very interesting aspect - I for myself have a very comfortable feeling on the fat neck of my 58er Reissue and I can play faster and easier on it as on any other guitar with a thinner neck. Just sold a Firebird because I really have to fight with the slim taper neck and although the guitar was one of my favourites to own I give it away - no fun playing for me. So another musican is happy now!
@@chrisforever1255 Sad because the Firebirds are beautiful. But another happy one in someplace.
@@bloodreyna6700 So it is!
The Fender T-Shirt ist cool! 🤣👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks for appreciating it. If I had a Gibson shirt I would so wear it in a video showing my Fender guitar. Just to see if anyone notices it. Haha!
@@KrisBarocsi ........leaf the Fender t-shirt, it's in all easier and better! My 59 LP Gibson is so very good, my Fender Strat 62 even much better at all! It's a kind of taste!!! Love both!!! Now I own a 59 €pi LP and this is a real big sound monster!! 👍🏼🤣😂 Brgds JB
Nagyon szép guitar bro, I play something similar and your right that they do sound like a tele on steroids.
Great video! Love the guitar!
Quick question: how do you go about trying different pickups? Do you actually install them all in your guitar an play for weeks or do you try them in other guitars? And how do you compare them, A/B?
Which prduction year is your R8 reissue? What did you do to get the VOS finish? I had a hard time removing the VOS gunk from my R8. The wisdom of the internet made me get some "Virtuoso Polish and Cleaner" from a shop in Finland to do the job. And it was worth it, bofore the neck felt like having glue on it. Thank for this nice presentation of your Paula!
How did you do the VOS-ification of the finish?
That’s something I wanted to know for a long time 😄
Hey man, I love your guitar! I had a question about neck profiles. I play USA 50s Standards and they have a pretty chunky neck and I like that. How do the CS 58 and 59 neck profiles compare to the current (2019 to now) USA standard 50s neck profiles? I have asked a few people and have gotten responses that were a bit unclear and even contradictory. I wish I could just get my hands on them first but there are no shops near me that carry them. Trying to decide which is best for me. Thanks!
I love how you personalised this guitar. This VOS treatment looks really cool!
Quick question about wiring
Will this treble bleed brighten up any paf style pickups? I got in my epi LP special a set of Roswell humbuckers ie the same ones you are swapping out in Silver Sparkle. Will treble bleed help them or should I just leave them split?
I’d suggest you try it for yourself, it’s pretty much impossible to generalise, if you don’t like the result you can just unsolder it
ohh this Lp is beautiful
Great video as always Kris👍Can you describe the process of making the bridge and stop tail that nice "satin"?
