#gaming #TheSimpsons #KevinCostnersWaterWorld - Hry
This episode of The Simpsons came out in 1996, factoring inflation, Arin spent over a thousand dollars for about 30 minutes of gameplay. Absolutely worth it.
That sounds about right for a 90s arcade.
Still more value than 95% of mobile games nowadays.
i remember that episode, episode 300338
That sounds about spot on with their TMNT Arcade playthrough
He only spent 530$
The most unrealistic part of this game is the machine accepting every quarter first try
Truly underrated comment.
Remember when you could paint them black and you'd get a credit AND the machine would kick it back out Lol
Oh, for you young people, that's why you see some black quarters still in circulation! Lol
@@pace1719 they are green around here.
@@spicybeantofu I don't actually know if the colour mattered, just that it was an actual coin colour. The machines didn't know. Sucker just popped out the bottom and you got a credit.
@@pace1719 fuck, where was this knowledge when I was beating time crisis at my local arcade when I was 8???
I got way too much amusement from Dan’s incredulity at Arin’s semi-recent watching of Waterworld. “Eight years? You watched Waterworld eight years ago? Under what circumstances?” 🤣
My Dad used to watch that movie like twice a year, it's okay, I never got why people hated it so much.
@@jacobedward2401 It's actually an okay movie.
I believe it's because it had such an insane budget, people expected more.
@@DarkHypernova the budget was probably cause shooting with all the water is expensive.
My family got the movie for FREE from someone and nobody touched it for like 5 years. Even my mom who has a thing for Kevin Costner wouldn't watch it. I finally made a point to sit down and see it (by myself) and...it's very much a movie that exists. Definitely don't remember any alien monsters though...
@@SpydrXIII That's exactly why. They actually built platforms on the water, outdoors. Getting an entire film crew out to your set on boats with action set pieces, while accounting for daylight, people needing breaks, etc. It's just a logistical nightmare.
I love how the game keeps throwing in stuff that wasn't in the movie and escalating the absurdity but Arin keeps thinking he just doesn't remember and it takes fighting a big alien face in an underground cave to finally realize
I'm so glad Allie didn't tell him, LMAO
And he still isn't sure, lol

"Don't split hairs with me you Piece of shit", Danny being sincere.

@@starkiller1248 Worst video EVER
...starts inserting 40 quarters
@@starkiller1248 What a rip!
(_*INSERTS ANOTHER TEN BUCKS IN QUARTERS*_)
Time for some fun math! Arin ended up spending $530 to beat the game in a single session. That's 2120 quarters. The average weight of a single quarter is 5.7 grams. When you work it all out, that means Milhouse would have had to have walked into the arcade carrying no less than 26.6 pounds of quarters just to play this masterpiece.
Sure, but it's Millhouse. You better double it.
I’m terrible with math cause I thought 40 quarters was 40 bucks…….or maybe I just need to quit drinking…idk
@@MeteoricMist40 dollars? That would be a dollar per quarter
Grumps: "We did it. We beat Waterworld"
The Arcade machine right after: "Game Over Please Deposit 40 Quarters"
Dan: Oh my god not the wrenches
Yoda: Ready for a joke?
Dan: SHUT UP YODA
The Cigarette guy actually has the really cool power of turning cigarettes into smoked cigarettes
$30 later: "This guy's a little faster than the other one" 😂😂😂
i laughed too hard at arin going “Hey guys, Michael Vsauce here” like it’s his last name
He's not totally wrong, He got it backwards, he does say "Hey, VSauce Michael here" (or maybe "Hey, VSauce, Michael here" as if we are VSauce).
Has a Vinny Vinesauce feel to it
Hey! Vinesauce, Vinny here.
@@kip258 I actually thought Vsauce was short for Vinesauce at first. The names confused me...
Fun fact: "Twister" And "Mars Attacks!" Were actually the first movies on DVD in 1997 (in America. Japan had access to DVD players in Novemver 1996. I can't find what the first batch of movies released on DVD in Japan was). And Jaws was the first movie on Laserdisc in 1978. So Waterworld missed the launch of DVDs into the world by a year.
DVDs were actually finalized as a media form in September 1996, with the memory of DVD 1.0 only being able to hold 1.46 gigs (amazing how that was like terabytes to us now).
It's actually a fun little rabbit hole if anyone else wants to fall down it.
Wow, i was a dumb kid. I just assumed Gladiator was the first DVD because it was the first DVD my dad bought XD
@@dogishappy0 xD I didn't even realize DVDs came out the year I was born because we still have only vhs for the longest time. It's so funny how our brains try to shape the entire world around our perspective
But Arin was right about Waterworld being issued in a jewel case first, I actually had that version
I love how Arin keeps asking Dan about plot details when he's the one who watched it most recently
Come on, Arin doesn't pay attention to plot, tutorials, onscreen instructions, games, or most people.
8 years is stretching the term 'recent'.
@@SakuraAvalon well Dan hasn't seen it at all so it's all relative
I'm starting to think that Arin hasn't really seen Waterworld, and it was just a fever dream.

Have you seen Arin and Suzy on Hot Pepper Gaming? Second best thing to it : )
i dont think dan can eat much other than nuggies with his jew stomach
They did it somewhat during youtube's stupid gaming interactive thing
I read that as 10 Miles Per Hour
If I remember correctly, Dan has a sensitive stomach that stops him from eating spicy foods. So it is impossible for Dan and Arnold to do a Hot Ones episode.
Looks like everything is coming up Game Grumps

Grimey and the line at the funeral were 'Change the channel, Marge.' I believe. No aliens in Waterworld.
I love the concept of an arcade game with a button on the left side of the stick, forcing you to do a Seth Killian-style cross grip just to interact with something.
"jellicle" is meant to be the cats' misunderstanding of humans calling them "dear little cats" (say it in a cockney accent), making the premise of the show extra funny because they think theyre a special kind of cat solely based on that lol
Also "and jellical" sounds like "Angelical", which kinda hints at their Uhh... Desire to die
The funniest thing in the world to me is that this game does in fact make up the alien thing, but it for some reason chooses not to mention the canon and extremely plot important detail that _the Mariner is a mutant with functional gills and webbed feet._
This joke is making fun of how, when it was released in 1995, Waterworld was the single most expensive movie ever made, but was widely panned as mediocre by film critics and absolutely failed to recoup its insane budget when you take into account how much of the total box office gross theaters keep (about half) even after the overseas box office is added in.
Hence the ridiculous amount of quarters to play the game, followed by the game being both uninteresting and nothing particularly special for an arcade cabinet, that is to say... a pretty simple, basic game, unnecessarily and even artificially hard so as to make the quarters keep coming, followed by Milhouse NOT putting more quarters in for another round and walking away (no sequel).
It's a testament to the clever comedic writing of classic Simpsons that it's still funny even if you DON'T know this bit of trivia, and manages to lampoon both a pop culture event AND a huge industry of the period (arcades) at the SAME TIME and on two different layers of the same joke.
No, Milhouse starts adding quarters, you can hear the counting.
This joke comes from The Simpsons S8 E10, "The Springfield Files" (first aired Jan 12, 1997), which was a pseudo-crossover with The X-Files (also by FOX) where Homer encounters an "alien".
That was the first episode of The Simpson’s I ever saw. I was six years old and it gave me the impression that the show was far more cartoonish than it really was. Not two years later did I start reading the licensed Bongo Simpson’s comics, and from that moment on I became a lifelong fan. Good times, good times.
It's the best episode of the Simpsons ever
The problem with simulation theory is that it straight-up does not matter. Everything already only exists within our own respective perceptions regardless of whether or not it technically "exists" to another body. If everything is "fake" then that just means that everything is equally real.
what? IMO, the bigger problem is that, if the universe is a simulation, there still needs to be a real universe in which the simulation is running in. it may be possible for our universe to be a simulation but it would not fully explain how stuff exists, it just adds an extra layer of complexity. the simulation hypothesis could explain some stuff but it would still leave us with more questions. if our universe is just a simulation then we probably know even less about the real universe than we thought. there needs to be some real universe, a simulation can only exist if there is a real computer to run the simulation. our mind's perception of the world may be inaccurate or even complete fiction but there still needs to be something creating our perceptions, even if the the reality is completely different from what we think we know.
@@elio7610 I mean yeah, you're approaching it from a more scientific angle, whereas I went at it more philosophically. I think the bottom line is that the universe almost definitely is not a simulation and if it is, what difference would it make?

"Trying to speed it up by doing something risky and end up slowing it down" is the definition of Florida highways
Explain
@HackedUpForBarbeque FL and TX highways are notorious for adding more capacity to the Highway via aditional lanes without adding any capacity to the exits. So you have more cars fighting for the same amount of exits, causing backups on the highways.
@@dogishappy0 Thanks mate 👍
My mother would have loved this ♡ Simpsons was her favorite show, Waterworld was her favorite movie, and GameGrumps was one of our favorites to watch together ever since she lost her ability to play games. She had ALS and passed away watching her favorite, Waterworld ♡ Rest in Peace mama, I'm thinking of you.
damn you Lou Gehrig, you can't keep getting away with this!
"I'm sure they got funny again."
Oh poor, silly Dan.
To be fair, there is an official Waterworld game adaptation.
In the Virtual Boy.
While this is true, it has the same energy as the Simpsons gag via Milhouse: "Remember Alf? Well he's back. On *pogs*!" >.
I love when Sleepy Time Junction Arin defaults to Mellow Tone Trivia Mode
Kudos to the person who made this! I love the creative impulse of watching something and going 'hm, I wonder if someone has ever done xxx' and turning it into something. A+++ I actually liked Waterworld quite a lot growing up (with no cultural context), altho the Smokers (pirates with Mad Max-type water vehicles, if I remember correctly) spooked me as a little.
Waterworld is literally just Mad Max, but water. That's it. The ice caps melted. The world is under water. A small outpost of humanity is in peril from a steam (or in this case OIL) punk threat. A weird, anti-social, short spoken badass shows up, becomes an unlikely hero, and helps to save the day and maybe learns a lesson about trust and friendship along the way before disappearing into the sunset, and riding off towards a potential sequel following the same formula. The Mad Max role is usually a living macguffin. They play a pivotal role in someone else's story, development and growth as a character and are rarely the TRUE main characters of the story you're watching.
It's a bit cheesy, and the acting isn't the greatest, but it's actually a really fun watch. People only shit on it these days almost out of tradition. You weren't allowed to enjoy good bad shit in the 90's. You can even hear it in Dan's knee jerk reaction lol As if watching Waterworld more than ONCE was a heroic feat. Again, the acting is a bit silly, but so is Mad Max? And every Stallone movie. And every Arnold movie. This one gets shit on because Costner put a bunch of his own money into it and it flopped at the boxoffice, and people like being cruel lol.
The movie itself is fun. If you can rewatch and enjoy something like Total Recall, Demolition Man, or literally ANY Mad Max movie, you'll probably like Waterworld just fine. Is it a bit silly? Sure. The main villains are literally called "Smokers" because, and this is true, they smoke cigarettes. And if you like Dennis Hopper, Dennis Hopper is Dennis Hoppering like a motherfucker in this movie. It's just fun.
The sad truth: Dan would probably LOVE this movie. He just needs to hand his inner "90's teenage edgelord" a $10 sack of stale, Canadian dirt weed and a Tool album and tell him to take the night off lol.
Not at all surprised Arin likes it though. It DOES, after all, start with someone drinking their own pee 🍺 Lol
"gets shit on because Costner put a bunch of his own money into it and it flopped at the box office, and people like being cruel"
Yeah that checks out
Personally, I liked it. I've watched it like 3 times over the years, which for me is more than average, but not my highest watch count for a movie. It had its problems, but its still worth a watch.
This was so beautifully written, bravo
I on the other hand am scared of watching it again cause I remember enjoying it as a kid and that rewatching it might ruin the magic it has in my memories
When I knew people hated that movie I was shocked, I'm from Venezuela and over here it was just a regular movie like the likes of Arnold's or stalones, just something that you watch have fun and enjoy, and for kid me it did indeed do that, I remember being so intrigued and scared at the idea of the world being on water and all that, I should re watch it, and yeah every old movie is kind of cheesy lol
Was the weird alien part at the end in the movie I don't remember it at all
Everytime Arin had to "please deposit 40 quarters" killed me 🤣
Killed you, you say?
_Game over. Please deposit 40 quarters._
I believe that names should always be said in ascending order of syllables, because it sounds better that way. Examples: Cow and Chicken, Ren and Stimpy, Max and Ruby, Tom and Jerry, Rick and Morty, Rocky and Bullwinkle, et cetera. Therefore the proper order should be Dan and Arin, it just rolls off the tongue more smoothly than the alternative. Note that there are exceptions to this rule
I love envisioning Arin actually at the arcade with Dan saying all of this video lol
The joke might be old, but damn if the game isn't perfect
I respect your opinion but this game looks tedious as all hell....
I can't believe this was made. One of the best Simpsons jokes. Was great to see you guys play through it
I love that I spent over 30 minutes watching two grown men play a game based on a meme from a 90s cartoon 😂😂
P.s. 90s Simpson’s were pure gold
A meme based on making fun of a 90's movie from a 90's cartoon, no less!
How is this a meme? A meme has to be repeated (usually with permutations). Why not just call it a joke/gag/bit/jape/gaff?
It's not a meme, it's a joke reference
I think I actually liked Waterworld when it came out. But it was a weird time. The 90's was like the age of media where everything had to be enjoyed ironically because everything sucked.
I just have affection for boat-based, island stories. Sky island worlds are my favorite, but Waterworld is definitely a vibe I dig.
at least we knew everything sucked in the 90s.
today you have kids unironically like "that's drip" or "that slaps" when it's the ugliest floral print or weakest beat of all time
and waterworld is a great movie
90s music was the best decade for music, at least.
The hell everything sucked in the 90's.
The 90's only sucked because I was still in school.
5 minutes in I thought “do they really play this for 39 minutes??” But now I see we have one of those trivia heavy episodes where Arin sounds partially sedated and Dan looks things up on his phone
I JUST found out about this after watching old Simpsons clips, and was watching someone else play through it then I see this. Nice..
I was just watching a bunch of steamed hams memes myself
I'm getting flashbacks of 'Dragon's Lair' of popping a dollar for every round. All that money and time... Worth it to see Princess Daphne. Nice. *Death* Damn! Twenty dollars and a week later... Nice. *Death.*
*THE DRAGON*
Water world was basically mad max on the opposite side of the wetness spectrum
Somehow, "Kevin Costner's Waterworld" is the 159th game the Grumps have beaten. And no, there are no aliens in the movie.
Also, this was EXACTLY how I'd imagined the game played on the Simpsons. Bravo to the devs.
6:28 - Arin: "Typical me, right? I try to speed things up by doin' somethin' risky, and it ends up slowin' it down."
Dammit. Finally a moment presents itself that's ACTUALLY ironic, and Danny doesn't point it out. I guess he just doesn't know the meaning.

Milhouse really done spent 40 quarters 😂
They should play My Dinner with Andre next.

The episode starts with the Simpsons clip
fun fact: arin cant actually see into the future and know that the editors put the clip in there after they checked its legally ok.
it's almost like arin can't predict the future and know what his editors might or might not be able to do.
Honestly, if I had 40 quarters for every time I punched a harpoon gun, I wouldn't have 40 quarters.
Dan being absolutely in love with the broadway “CATS” made my little theatre heart happy 🥰 I don’t know what the hell it’s about but got damn when I hear the song memories- I cry every time 🥹🤣
I saw it on it's final UK tour - at the time, it had a revival since then - and from what I remember it was all in one night, a celebration of their traditions and deciding who would be the next leader with the elder passing away...
I might be wrong, this was about 20 years ago
It’s pretty awful
@@andreseh87 better than the Vagina Monologues.
Dan’s immediate casual dismissal of simulation theory with “Or it doesn’t” made me laugh with how perfectly it captures my own feelings towards it
i can not believe they made a game out of that bit. I also cant believe i have never seen or heard MattMcmuscles talk about this!
3 minutes in and I'm just realizing what this game is going to be
It's fun hearing Dan speak fondly about Cats. I only recently decided to "take the plunge" and watch it; and it's my favourite musical now. I feel like some people will hear (faulty) synopsis and judge it prematurely.
But if you enjoy musical and are able to get into scenarios and accept the setting that is presented to you; it's fantastic, and honestly has a deeper meaning behind it other than (as the faulty synopsis will often say) "CaTs WaNt DiE"
"One of my favorite episodes..." **Then recounts the episode, with many memorable parts forgotten**
What does "favorite" mean to Arin? Because it clearly doesn't mean he'll remember anything about it.
By the way, the man's name was Frank Grimes, and Homer exclaims, "Marge, change the channel!" at the funeral. It is also one of my favorite episodes. 💜
Thank you I had forgotten the episode... but it is one of my favorites 😂
shh, no one tell them this didn't come out after their Disneyland stuff.
I was in the musical cats, and the briefest synopsis I can give is it’s a bunch of cats auditioning to die
I wonder if you'll Larry the looter tomorrow. The same guy made a Larry the looter and escape from Grandma's house game.
love that this episode is almost 40 minutes long for multiple reasons
I really like these weird off path games you two are picking out, so funny
When video games really made us rage quit. We waisted hundreds of dollars in quarters just to die. Good times man.
Plus it's funny it's from the Simpsons. That Simpsons arcade swallowed all my quarters and I never beat it.
I was literally on my way home a few minutes ago thinking about game grumps, then an NSP song comes on my phone and I was like “ oh speaking of arin and dan…”
then I thought “that sounds weird it doesn’t flow off the tongue like Dan and Arin”
AND TODAYS EPISODE STARTS WITH THE SAME CONVERSATION BETWEEN THEM!?
Man that’s some crazy shit.
Well now I'm hyped for the Disneyland 10-Minute Power Hour
Likewise
They oughta try out the Waterworld game for SNES. Not because it's a good game, but because it's a game that has no right to have such a killer soundtrack. And I bet Dan would really love the music.
Everything's coming up Milhouse!
Watching Arin Hanson control Milhouse Van Houten control Kevin Costner portray The Mariner
Reminder that season 2-8 of The Simpsons is where it's at 😎 And Arin at the start is talking about Homer's Enemy, a season 8 episode 👌
I mean season 1 is still classic (aka before the new writing team) but it's still finding it's footing. 5-8 are probably the seasons that hold up the most but man, 2-4 has so many good episodes
I'd say 2-12 personally but as long as you don't touch anything beyond that then you're good
My wife and I just recently rewatched the Simpsons and you are totally right. Season 9 really starts to jump the shark.

The plot of Waterworld, it was a little girl who had a tattoo on her back that was a map to dryland. Kevin Costner’s character was a fish person who had gills behind the ears how to savor after getting captured by bad guy then find dry land.
On the subject of arcade games that guilted you on the continue screen, the Ninja Gaiden arcade game was brutal. Ryu Hayabusa tied down as a spinning saw slowly descends toward his chest while a bunch of demons watch. Brutal.
