I don't mean to be unkind but the moderator asked Al a rambling and periphrastic question that really didn't make much sense. And then Alan said, I'm going to pretend I understood what you meant with that question. I think the interviewer may have had his heart in the right place but did not have a lot of experience on the stage and came across as sort of confused and jittery. In any case it was a terribly complex and not very interesting question, and I am not surprised that Alan simply told a standard boilerplate Beach Boys story in response.
Plus you may not see it here but in the theater we saw the MC list of the names of about 50 producers who were involved in this documentary, and it was extremely tedious and a waste of time. People in theaters for a Beach Boy documentary don't want to hear a name of a bunch of executive producers that they have never heard of.
The producer and the director encouraged people to watch the documentary on Disney plus, so that part was an advertisement, and they provided no particular insight or aesthetic brilliance about the Beach Boys, so their contribution to this interview was a bit of a yawn.
And then at the end they should have shown a scene with Mike and Alan reunited with Brian and Dave and Bruce and shown the five Beach Boys together dramatically. In other words this little interlude before the documentary was poorly produced and intellectually unsatisfying, and I'm sure that the Beach Boys felt the same way. The Beach Boys themselves are extremely sophisticated and intelligent and complex thinkers, and they have had to endure so many bad interviewers over the years so they took it in stride.

I just saw it as someone who is really excited to be there and not sure what questions to ask. He was only given about 2 questions per person, which is tough to do when you are a big fan of their work.

Was the documentary good. Or similar to past docs? Anything new or same old song? Thanx

@@tomjones5650 a very mediocre. Nothing new and just Retreat of past interviews come up with some new found footage of this and that filtered in. Lots of Hollywood people proud of themselves who didn't really understand or Express much about the Beach Boys. Few isolated moments of poignancy when some people like Brian's ex-wife Marilyn were interviewed or the great member of The Wrecking Crew Don randy, and it's very nice to see David Marks get good recognition. But overall nothing new or profound here
