  • In this video you will learn to carve a simple Woodspirit using a knife and a v-tool. With just a little practice, this project can be carved in just 15 minutes. This is the fourth project in the Complete Beginner Lesson series. As a lesson (as opposed to a tutorial) this video will take time to explain how and why to complete each step and will pause periodically to specifically teach new skills.
    By the end of this video you will be able to:
    1) Carve a simple face.
    2) Make clean cuts with a v-tool.
    Note: The wood used in this video is basswood
    The knife used in this video is from Deep Holler Knives, see www.deephollerknives.com/ for details on where to purchase. The V-Tool used in this video is a 1/4 inch, 60 degree v-tool from Drake Tools, see drake-knives.myshopify.com/ for more details.

    Series Description: Welcome to the Complete Beginner Whittling Lessons Series! This series is intended for people who are completely new to whittling and looking for advice on how to get started. It starts with a series of four videos about what equipment and materials are needed for whittling and then there will be a series of projects that will teach the basics of whittling while completing specific projects.
    Note that this series focuses on what I would call hobby whittling using dedicated whittling knives and wood that are specifically designed for whittling as a hobby. We will not focus on found wood carving, knives that are not specifically dedicated to whittling, spoon carving, bushcraft or other forms of whittling and woodcarving in this series.

I create something that make other people happy. This coming year I’m going to give ornaments to two of the nursing homes they live here in town for the clients to have something for Christmas ornaments

    I would like to suggest you make a complete video on sharping knifes and gouges. I have been following this video and carving my own wood sprit. To be honest, having a hard time of it. Also let me add that I have been chip carving since the late 90's and my chip knives cut wood very well. After struggling to get decent cuts with my Flexcut detail knife i brought out one of my chip knives and solved my problem. Even though the flexcut seemed Sharpe and I had stropped it numerous times, it didn't seem to cut right. I spent some time this morning and did a proper sharpening and the knife now cuts well. The first lesson in my first chip carving class was sharpening a knife. I made all the difference in my desire to peruse this hobby. I firmly believe the sharping of a knife is key to enjoying the process..

    Is it normal to have the wood become really chippy and splintery as you use the v tool? Also how hard do you have to push with the v tool? It is so hard to push using basswood

    • @dywoodcarving
      @dywoodcarving  Před 7 měsíci +1

      It shouldn't really be hard to push through, but may take some practice. I wouldn't say splintering is normal, but it is possible with the v tool because one side is usually carving against the grain while the other is carving with the grain. I explain this more in my video on v tools along with some tips for making clean cuts.

    I may have missed it, but what kind of wood, and HOW do you sharpen your tools?

    • @dywoodcarving
      @dywoodcarving  Před 8 měsíci

      It's basswood. I have a video on v tools that includes how to sharpen them and see my video on strops for the knives.

      I used a Drake VTool and Deep Holler knife in the video. I have a video on just v tools and a video on how to choose a knife if your interested in more detail on either.

    would this be easy to carve on polar wood?

    • @dywoodcarving
      @dywoodcarving  Před 7 měsíci

      Assuming you mean poplar, it should be generally carveable, yes. Of course any kind of wood will have some variation based on the source.

    Can I use any type of wood ?

    • @dywoodcarving
      @dywoodcarving  Před 9 měsíci

      Some wood will definitely work better than others. I use and recommend basswood. It is soft and easy to carve, but holds detail well. Pine, butternut, Birch would generally work better than harder woods like maple, walnut, or cherry (which can be carved, but are more difficult).

      I get it from several sources, you can check my wood video for more details. There are some links and recommendations there.

      The tool is from Drake Tools. If you are looking for a more affordable and easy to find option I recommend Flexcut. I have a video on V tools with more info.
