Shes right, ive been self learning for 18 months so far, consistently for hours a day, even went part time at work so I can study 5 days a week. I now know python, sql, and currently doing a data engineer bootcamp learning about etl's etc, once I've made a couple pipeline projects using cloud for storage etc etc ill start applying for jobs, probably in around 3 months. Its taken longer than I wanted but look, I now know how to code, communicate with database, working with api's and pipelines, im hoping this enables me to stand out from everyone else who i know wouldn't put in the sacrifice to learn the amount I've learned. A tip from someone in a senor role in this cloud thing: Talk to people local to you (city/neighborhood/...) for example in a local facebook group, say you're searching for something and ask for help. People are more open to help locals even if they don't know you personally. Tip 2: if someone tries to help you but it didn't work out - DONT GHOST THEM . Had someone reaching out to me to get an internship, I've proposed something in my company that in the end wasn't open anymore and I've said "sorry, this isn't going to work, maybe the next time" This guy didn't even answer me - not "it's ok, thanks for trying anyway", nothing. Guess what, dummy, there won't be a next time.

Winged my interview after 24 hours of reading a MS access book and doing some examples. Not too proud but also proud of it 😂 After that, followed the "whatever is interesting and pays money"

Had a conversation similar to this with a good friend about certs. I started my AWS cert journey 2 years ago and quickly learned it is not easy and you have to be obsessed with learning it + years of IT experience helps!
After 9 months in L1 support, 6 months in L2, and 16 months in L3, I’m excited to say I’m now a Cloud Operations Administrator! It’s been quite the journey and definitely not easy, but I made it! I was fortunate that the opportunity was internal, and chatting with the team manager about my interest really helped. Always good to get your name in the brain!
Your content is real. I am doing RHCSA right now to get the Linux stuff and my G, it is different playing around a bit and installing a distro and learning stuff that really helps businesses. But it is awesome, you get real knowledge. Knowledge that a lot of people just don't have, and you can do real work. So it feels awesome. I have no issue spending 4000 hours to get good at something
I really want to tell you that I think you give great advice, and I have recommended you to team members to expand their cloud knowledge and/or get into cloud.
I got my first AWS certification in 2019 but haven't managed to get into a cloud role yet. I never really had any clue what other skills I needed to learn and spent the first few years waiting for an AWS role. I slowly figured things out in the last few years, and it's been so difficult to get any interviews. I have almost given up and feel sad thinking about the years I lost. I worked as a sysadmin before, I've moved to a different country, and I'm doing helpdesk work at the moment. I'm not sure if I can come out of this, but your videos are still giving me some hope.
It was so easy to get into cloud during covid 2019, I job hopped many times. You guys are not making smart moves for your career. Your previous role as Sysadmin would've been perfect path to cloud combined with bachelors degree and a bunch of related/in-demand certifications. I see you since then move to another country, which likely entire different job market. if you still have interest in cloud jobs. You can opt for freelance work to build experience and make some money as well, but you will have to work your way up from the ground. Having credentials such as any IT bachelors, certifications, and projects will help with getting clients.

What a great vid, I've had a very similar career path, I'm also an azure cloud engineer and I couldn't agree more with all these points, especially learning how to study which was a lot of trial and error for me. those fundamentals are the things that actually make you good at the job.

Solid advice. And not just for the cloud. This could be applied to cyber, networking, etc. For cloud newbies, I'd also recommend learning Terraform after learning the basics. Get comfortable on that command line!

0:56 glad you open with this. I've have heard time after time locally (Not social media). "Get this certs and you'll get a 60k, 80k, 100k position." Or even worse entitlement "I took this training/certs and I deserve that 100k position" It doesnt work that way and you dont deserve anything(or anybody owes you anything for that matter). You have to put time and effort and earn it. It may take you 6 months or 2 years to finally get in the direction you want end up at. But nevertheless it takes time.

I’ve been in telecommunication systems for about a decade and just ventured into cloud late last year and I quickly realized how deceitful the internet has become about cloud. It’s really neck breaking and not as easy as they make it seem. I’m pretty good with Linux as it’s the base platform for almost all telecom equipment. Thanks for all this great advice. I am a network person by my degree, but I love server management, I actually thought about an AWS or Azure cert but not real sure right at this moment. I agree with learning things thoroughly it does help later down the road and keeps one from becoming lazy. Great video and you have a new Subscriber!
Great, thank you. The idea of having the same job in IT would be a dream. My experience has been every two years the smaller companies (who pay better) get bought out or loose their contract. I since then I gave up chasing high hourly (or salary) rates with small fast paced companies and have gone over to the dark side and now with with one of the giant monsters who swallow up the little companies. I get really great medical benefits and pretty steady work. But here I am just one of the thousands of fellow employees, that is the down side, nobody really notices your hard work (or it doesn't matter because the company is too big to keep track of me). My choice, take the good with the bad.

What about Data Engineer to Solutions architect/cloud engineer? I'm a Data Analyst studying to become a Data engineer. I would like start with A then go to CCNA but don't have the $$ to spend $250 + per certification with an entry level Data Analyst salary. Getting AWS certifications in solutions architect and associate Data engineer and increasing my salary with a data engineer role seems like the only way. The data engineer role would give me cloud experience and the certifications are cheaper. Would love to hear your honest thoughts

I went the CS degree route a few years ago when everyone was really pitching the cert then job thing , took lots of electives , graduate next year after 5 years . Interning right now as a network engineer, maybe would do it for a year or two as a jr engineer. But from ppl I talked to , since I’m good a programming and have good network understanding, (also other stuff like OS and Linux and Active Directory)that doing a few cloud centric projects should set me up pretty good to get a job after I graduate next year in cloud or devops . Yes I know their different 😅 My whole desire for cloud is to me it’s way more of a CS job than front end or back end development . Having to know not just programming , but IPs and memory , security , AI, command line etc , to me is like everything in CS rolled into one Also I’m in Chicago area , look of your condo looks Chicago to me because of radiator lol . If there’s any openings for freshers please let me know

Is it possible to skip the help desk role if you're already in tech? Say a network engineer with CCNP, AWS associate, advanced networking speciality and basic Python scripting. Ultimately want to transition to cloud eng, but want to try take a side step rather than step back.
Im a mechanical engineer with 7 years of experience. That hardest thing for me to accept is the paycut. To go from making over 6 figures back to help desk is not doable. And I want to change careers because I did what I needed to do as an ME and I'm bored. I need a new challenge. I want to work remotely and have that freedom to live anywhere. I experimented with software and learned Java and C++ but I could not be paid to stare at code all day long. So I gave up on trying to be a software engineer. Then I was introduced into cloud and now I'm trying to learn as much as I can. Without having the guidance on what to focus on, its very easy to get overwhelmed. This is solid advice especially after seeing so many social media posts around breaking to cloud and breaking into tech. It's too much. I passed my AWS Practitioner and I found it's not enough to get in. Since then I've been trying to study for the Solutions Architect cert. It's a huge step up in difficulty but I was told it holds more weight. I guess my question is should I try to get that cert or should i just focus on projects even with the AWS Practitioner?

I throw around easy a lot but I actually put in a lot of time and preparation for whatever challenge I am faced with. By the time that challenge comes, it's not as hard and somewhat easy for me to overcome.

Help desk internship, one contract cloud role, passed two cert tests and a couple projects, associates degree in IT and I just can’t land an interview not even for help desk. It’s tough out here folks
@@needmango Need daily commits, you've only got a few commits in July this year, it's not enough. Need to fill those squares up with green on GitHub. Do you have a personal website with projects and are you documenting your learning? Making LinkedIn posts and a blog site too. That all helps. Get your LinkedIn immaculate as well. Make contacts and also with recruiters, post about what you're learning and your thought process as you troubleshooted issues. Remember there's plenty of people out there that want a job and are prepared to do the work. So you need to be commited, be as good as them if not better, a few job applications or even 100s of job applications without the required effort won't work in this market and dare I say it never works.

I have 4 certificates in Azure and AWS and 10 projects portfolio. No job after 700 resume. Everyone looking 5-10 years experience. Don't waste your time on certifications.

@@stevancy hi, can't speak for all companies but the one i'm working for is willing to give a shot to anyone who doesn't have cloud skills but have decent Linux skills and let the person upskill from here....as they say the cloud is made of systems and your system reside in the cloud

It's never been easy, and i've been always disgusted by the talk which claims that it's easy to some extent.
I throw around easy a lot but I actually put in a lot of time and preparation for whatever challenge I am faced with. By the time that challenge comes, it's not as hard and somewhat easy for me to overcome.

Help desk internship, one contract cloud role, passed two cert tests and a couple projects, associates degree in IT and I just can’t land an interview not even for help desk. It’s tough out here folks

@@needmango Need daily commits, you've only got a few commits in July this year, it's not enough. Need to fill those squares up with green on GitHub. Do you have a personal website with projects and are you documenting your learning? Making LinkedIn posts and a blog site too. That all helps. Get your LinkedIn immaculate as well. Make contacts and also with recruiters, post about what you're learning and your thought process as you troubleshooted issues. Remember there's plenty of people out there that want a job and are prepared to do the work. So you need to be commited, be as good as them if not better, a few job applications or even 100s of job applications without the required effort won't work in this market and dare I say it never works.

I have 4 certificates in Azure and AWS and 10 projects portfolio. No job after 700 resume. Everyone looking 5-10 years experience. Don't waste your time on certifications.
I completely agree. I have four cloud certs (three in azure and one in AWS) and several other certifications with a degree but I can’t land a cloud job for the life of me
