Instead of a dedicated Steam Train theme, LEGO should just have a dedicated "Trains" theme. Why are trains apart of the City theme anyway? With a dedicated Trains theme you could do steam trains ( european style, wild west style, etc ) as well as trains from different eras ( bring back the Santa Fe Super Chief! ). But, I agree with selling engines and cars separately ( also train themed buildings like passenger/cargo stations, roundhouses, etc ). Honestly, LEGO could approach the Train theme like Speed Champions. Each engine/car could be based on a real vehicle.

What you've done here is replicated the LEGO Group's foundational product on a larger scale - you've created a system. By separating track, locomotives and carriages, each purchase adds more and more scope to what you can make, thus making every new one more appealing and adding value to every older one - and since the barrier to entry would be lower, that cycle would begin far more easily than it otherwise might. There are fundamental strengths to the concept in terms of both business sense and brand alignment from the LEGO Group's own perspective; let's hope that they're thinking along similar lines!

You know, a steam loco wouldn't have to be unpowered. A small Power Functions motor and a basic geartrain powering one of the axles will fit within the gauge of LEGO train track, and the remaining drive wheels can be driven via connecting rods. You're not forced to use the train motor blocks.

    • @acynder1
      @acynder1 Před 2 lety +4

They could add a smaler or more modular train motor block so you could make diferent locomotives winout wasting excesive space in motoring. In fat if memory doesnt fail me, the standar motor block is a few studs too short to aceept a x-6-x (or x-3-x) wheel set. That could be changed by making it a shorter one powering just one axle and gain a lot of modularity.

Actually "powered tender pushed locomotive" has become quite common with steam engines in conventional model railroading (think Roco, Trix or Märklin).
One of the advantages is that the tender is a closed box anyway while they can offer more detail and even places to "look across" between the frame and boiler on the loco if there's no mechanical feed between the engine and wheels straight down as there would be with the engine in the boiler.
Usually the locomotive is still heavy enough to run fine through turns and everything.
(Granted, some just have the motor in the tender and drive both tender wheels and locomotive wheels via a propshaft)

I have used tender power in both my LEGO steam locomotives, it's a lot easier then trying to do a ton of complex gearing into the drive wheels. Also using Big Ben Bricks drive wheels, which I got before the introduction of the traction bands, so powering them through the locomotive would have just been wheelslip simulator 9000!

I think a Lego Trains theme would be amazing. I’m huge into electric model trains and would think it would be so fun to have the Lego option for model railroading. There would be a huge market for kids that like trains but can’t afford an electric train set. They do need to have detail and not be too blocky. Lego could do trains from all over the world the Union Pacific Big Boy, Southern Pacific Daylight, a Garratt used in Africa and even a Swiss cog train. It would open up the world of Lego immensely.

You know, as much as I would want LEGO to produce a line like the one you've proposed, I highly doubt it would ever happen. The LEGO train community has been without support for a long time, and creators have done amazing things to boost the experience for everyone. We have a wide variety of 3rd party elements that fill a lot of the gaps in the market, such as custom wheels, rods, and now a long time builder has resurrected the 9v track system: www.fxbricks.com
I definitely wouldn't be opposed to more sets. It's just they have done stuff similar in the past, and it hasn't always worked out; My Own Trains from 2001. But since speed champions have done so well, who knows what LEGO can conjure up! For the meantime, if people are looking for some custom models, including that black engine from the thumbnail (my E2 loco coming out in late Sept.), check out Block Junction for custom instructions: blockjunction.co.uk/

The LEGO Train Builders have been left in the dark for so long to the point that we've created so many small businesses that cater to all our needs such as DCC-like systems from PFx Bricks to custom train wheels and coupling rods to 3D printed narrow gauge tracks. For sure, having more LEGO train sets would be great but at this point LEGO would not be able to compete with the current market out there unless LEGO decides to expand the Train theme massively which seems highly unlikely.

As a older collector, I have pretty much all of the LEGO train related products since the late 80's. The train community is a niche market within the current business model. The licensed themes dominate the market and some of the more traditional themes have drifted away. Trains, Pirates and Castle have all suffered with either no product line or dumbed-down products with off-sized pieces and awkward looking builds. As far as trains are concerned, there are several third-party track and model providers that have some high quality products that offer a lot of opportunities for the LEGO train enthusiast.

The most recent one I was impressed by was the crocodile locomotive, even if I didn’t get it. So yes I would love to see steam trains, even builds that are more specific and diverse, like a thatcher Perkins type loco and some western cars, or a mikado 2-8-4.

What annoys me with Lego is the lack of doors in their city train sets. I remember getting the Santa Fe train back in the early 2000s. That set was absolutely superb. The emerald night is an excellent set. Why there were no more carriages made baffles me. We all know how they’d sell.

Honestly I love this idea. My biggest beef with how Lego has handled trains is their thought of American Steam being only the 4-4-0 or 4-6-0, and how they considered a theme park train a steam train. There is such a variety of American steam and they haven't even breached the smallest subset. I'd love to see some USRA Pacifics, some articulated locomotives, or basically any streamlined loco.
Second to me is the issue of not selling individual rolling stock and track. It just isn't cost effective to buy Lego branded track when they sell it in the packs they do, and trying to find more passenger cars for my 60197 or for the Emerald Night is basically impossible.
Alongside all that, extra side buildings would be fun and a nice addition. Good video, let's make it happen!
(On a side note, I'm envious of you guys in the UK, you've done a much better job preserving your beautiful steam locomotives, and I would love to visit sometime and see them in person)
