- GTR (Govia Thameslink Railway) are rolling out their new trains on the Northern City Line out of Moorgate (replacing 40 year old units) and invited me along on a test trip.
It also tied with my own milestone as they were kind enough to notice that I was about to hit 100,000 subscribers, so they had a fun surprise for me - HUGE THANKS to Roger, Alice and Matt from GTR.
Note: The old 40 year old Class 313's are still on the network, down on the south coast with Southern.
Also note: Class 717 units are now running passenger test trips, you might find yourself catching one if you pop along ...

This is over a year old and he doesn't even have 200,000 yet. That is madness. This channel is the most under appreciated channel on CZcams
he is currently at 313K
Now 316k

Been subscribed since 34k subs, your videos always cheer me up and are super informative. Congrats on 100k!
Same here. Good work!
What an amazing gesture to someone who's so informative, positive and seems so popular in the train network. I'm not a massive train fan, but love your vids, all the hidden facts, different routes, and you're always happy and get on with the different rail companies employees! Congrats on the certificate, trophy and 100k subs - although as i type this it's on 103k lol. Would love to bump into you one day and shake your hand and say well done on your awesome knowledge! Congrats Geoff.
Congratulations Geoff!
Gosh, I don't think I'd be the same person I am today without you Geoff. I have been obsessed with railways ever since I was 10, and here we are 6 years later, still the same rail enthusiast I am. I live in Dubai, where all we have is the Dubai Metro & Tram, and I love it whenever I go to London and see a large network of railways with a long history. I now have a determined future which I wouldn't ever have thought of. Thank you Geoff for being the person you are.
Congratulations on reaching a hundred thousand subscribers, it is a very big accomplishment to have such a huge fan base, and I hope to see you reach one million soon.

Less than two years later and now homing in on 300k. Well done Geoff
Two yeard after that and not even 400K :(
Been a fan since you had just over 2,000 subscribers. Your channel has become a place of gathering for transport nerds from the world all over, and I'm not sure you're aware of the massive positive influence you've had on people.
Congratulations on 100K!
A well deserved 100k. Your videos are very clearly thought-out, creatively edited, very entertaining and very informative. You ARE the CZcams UK rail guy!
So theres 99.999 others like me. Train nerds. I live in Northampton, I allwas go on British Rail, tubes, or the like, but I LOVE all your videoes, about abandoned stations, least passenger stops, the all stops on the tube challenge, and everything in between. I know more about the stations in all over Britain than in my country. Thank you, Geoff, for your marvelous content!
Your new music is really relaxing.

A huge congrats Geoff. I honestly got emotional watching you receive this award. I am a Canadian who fell in love with the Underground when I first visited London in 1987. When my mom was still alive she took me everywhere on the Underground and on NSE from Manor Park (my aunt's local stop). I havent visited since 2002, but your videos which I have watched (repeatedly) since 2013 are entertaining and informative. You are living one of my dreams and watching your channel grow shows what passion and persistence can do. Extremely proud of you. Many regards from your fanbase in Canada.
Massive congratulations to you on 100k!!!!!! You have spent years working on youtube and you really deserve it for all the great content you deliver! Here is to another 100k!

You are a lovely guy full of warmth and a graceful smile.Good on you well deserved 👌🙂👍
Congratulations Geoff, you're an excellent spokesperson for our community and we're very lucky to have you! On a side note, I've always thought that part of Moorgate looks more like a Paris Metro station than a London Underground station
Congrats on the achievement, sir. Look forward to more insightful, informative and entertaining content for many years to come 🏆
Been waiting to see this for a couple years now! So happy for you! You deserve all the recognition you've been gaining around the UK. Cheers!
I legitimately cried when you got the trophy and certificate. So deserved in my opinion. Also great music in this video, really captured the sense of amazement created by new trains!!!
Congrats on the 100k!
By the way, I prefer the old 313's. Something about their mechanical nature makes them satisfying to ride.
Congrats on 100k Geoff! Well deserved, love your vids here, on ATS, and Londonist! Nice gesture by GTR to give you a gift for it too! Wonder if the old tech from when the line was part of the tube will be updated (if it can be)? As you pointed out, quite odd for a brand new train to need such old kit!
Very well deserved i hope i see you in London in april/may!
Congratulations on your milestone... Here’s to 500K subs on your way to 1,000,000 subs

Congratulations Geoff!!! Greetings from sunny central Florida.
Well done for reaching 165k now! I love your videos and I hope to see more in the future!
Congrats on 100k
Firstly, congrats Geoff on the 100k subs! However, I'll be very surprised if this switch from old to new stock goes without major hitches. After GTR's disastrous time table fiasco of last year, I'm afraid I wouldn't trust GTR as far as I could throw them - which is not very far! Be prepared for more of the "The next train has been cancelled due to a member of staff not being available" announcements!! (the lamest excuse in the history of lame excuses). I really really hope I'm proved wrong. On this line (I live in Hornsey) we deserve a franchise fit for purpose for the 20th century. Come on GTR - please get your act together! I'll stop ranting now.....
Congrats on reaching 100,000 ! Love your work !
Congrats, well done and great reward for a lot of hard work, THANK YOU for all that you do please do not stop, I shall stick with you and as it said at the end see you at that million.
I was on that train (I believe it was 707012), but it was around the afternoon, I was very lucky to catch that train as I had literally no idea that they were doing test trips.
EDIT:
CONGRATS ON 100K, WELL DONE!!!
Maybe is 717012,not 707012.Is a 717,not 707 operated by SE (formerly SWR)
I still wish they'd put some yellow on the front to match the 700's. They just look so odd without it ...

Geoff Marshall De nada! That was well deserved. Here’s to one million!
5:18 "Part of the Northern Line until the 1950's". Isn't that supposed to be "common knowledge" (let alone professional knowledge) that it was part of the Northern until 1976 (as even the Moorgate tube crash occured there in 1975)
Strudlfaust true. The 313s were the first and only (before these new 717s) standard trains to go in the Moorgate tunnels
The Great Northern & City Line might have been run as part of the Northern Line, but the size of the tunnels are totally different.
It's a real shame that the Northern Heights plan got scrapped:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_line#Great_Northern_&_City_Railway
I'd like to see TfL have a *new* Northern Heights plan, with the underground stations on the Northern City Line all made longer and the Moorgate tunnels moved, so that the tunnels can extend south to Bank, Canon Street, across the Thames to London Bridge and off to somewhere useful in South East London.
Torjuz1337 the driver was distressed that the northern heights plan was dropped 20 years earlier so crashed? I don’t get that one
It was always intended that Moorgate would be linked to Finsbury Park using tunnels that were bored to accommodate standard gauge trains. However, the branch was operated by London Underground using tube stock, instead and formed the City Branch of the Northern Line. As someone who lived in the Essex Road area, I was a frequent user of the tube from this station and can well remember the large stations from, what seemed, another era and the seemingly diminutive trains. The tunnels between Drayton Park and Finsbury Park were closed in the mid 60's as part of the Victorial Line works and the GN platforms were adopted for use by southbound Piccadilly/Victoria Line trains. The tunnel portals at Drayton Park were clearly visible from the station platforms for many years subsequently. The rest of the branch was temporarily closed in 1975 prior to intoduction of the Great Nothern Electric service in 1976. The re-opening of the branch and introduction of the new service finally brought about the original vision for the line - running trains from the City into the northern London suburbs.
When it was originally constructed in the 1900s, the rail company that built it wanted to build a rail line that would come right into the City of London from Hertfordshire. They had a partnership with the LNER, or it's predecessor, to run services beyond Finsbury Park. But after the City of London objected to the plan to bring a large, although underground, station into the heart of the Square Mile (so the route was truncated at Moorgate), the other rail company backed out and it just became a short line between Finsbury Park to Moorgate, which then got taken over by the Metropolitan Railway. It then became a Metropolitan Line branch after 1933, with Metropolitan Line rail stock. It then got transferred to the Northern Line with the Northern Heights extension plan, with Standard Tube stock and that got swapped for 1938 stock before the line was transferred over to British Rail.
Congratulations and well deserved recognition! I spent the summer of 1985 in London commuting on the Bakerloo & Northern Lines and taking old Brit Rail. Always love to see how the network is evolving and improving!
Good job Geoff! Your films/videos are really good, and they are about trains! You deserve to have those 100,000 subscribers because you put so much effort into all, of your videos, from the songs to the video quality. I’m so happy that you finally reached it.

Nice one 100k
Brilliant video! I'm looking forward to my first trip on a class 717 but I'll be sad to see the class 313s go! Congratulations on 100,000 subscribers! :)
Congratulations on 100,00 and then some. Very well deserved. Keep up on the great work. Looking forward to more.
Does that mean that the Seaford to Brighton line is now the most archaic rolling stock in Mainland England? They are still running 313's to the best of my knowledge (could be wrong as I'm running on third hand information)
Yes, they are still running on the Coastway service. They were refurbished so don't look nearly as shabby as the GN stock. No plans to replace them anytime soon.
I also saw a 313 today at Fratton. I think it was on the Portsmouth to Brighton service, but it was in the old blue BR livery!
its apparently been painted ready to go to a museum!
Merseyrail 507 stock?
TfL overground Enfield Town to Liverpool Street is also class 313 rolling stock but refurbished.
I don't really like the Siemens Desiro City trains. I prefer Bombardier Aventra Class 345 (#PurpleTrain), Stadler FLIRT Class 755 (new trains for Great Eastern Main Line) and CAF Civity Class 331 (new trains for the north)
Congratulations Geoff for the 100.000 Subscribers! I wish more people to know your amazing content! Directly from São Paulo, Brazil, I give again my congratulations for the conquest!

New trains are on order, but in their usual way the RMT are protesting about the guard situation. If I recall rightly the Victoria line in London hasn't had guards from day one, causing no fatalities.

So a 'northern' train in London that gets hardly used gets new trains, yet northern rail in the north still has pacers...
Its london of course they get all the new stuff
Those 'Northern' trains in London are absolutely packed every morning. They definitely need to be upgraded.
'Hardly used'? These are rammed in rush hour, when a minor problem leaves stations packed because trains cannot clear them fast enough, even when running as frequently as possible. I understand Pacers are awful & used more heavily than designed but these should be replaced soon too.
They are new northern rail trains in 2020 for northern cities in the uk
@@gisar.6539 Northern Rail's new trains should have started to enter service by now, but like the 717s, they are late. Shouldn't be long now though.
Congratulations. Love this channel so much as it allows me for to find out more about trains my favourite mode of transport.
Congrats on 100 000 Geoff! I haven't been to the UK yet but your videos have made me want to go and see all the amazing railways in Britain, which I will be doing later this year.
Great, more uncomfortable utilitarian ‘design’.
Hate these trains, currently on the Bedford - St Pancras line. Seats are the most uncomfortable on the network and the hardest. There is no ventilation, the air con is too cold or too hot. No tables. They sway and bump harshly and make me feel nauseaus.
Bring back BRITISH RAIL.
It did the same job for a tenth of the money. I was there at the time.
