- The history behind the Black community's relationship with swimming and water is a painful one. We were transported against our will across seas, drowned, and kept out of water throughout our years in America. Why can't Black people swim? It's not a question of whether or not we can, it's a question of whether or not we will. Whether or not we will face our fears and the trauma that lurks beneath the surface. I have made it a priority with my children to teach them water and swim safety, because knowing that Black children are 3 to 5 times more likely to drown than their white counterparts does not sit right with me. As their father, I want to prepare them for everything the world has in store-and as a Black man, I want them to know that they will not do things despite their Blackness, but because of it.#BELEAFINFATHERHOOD

Let's just make more familys like this in general. I'm not 100% white but im 50% and my parents where shit and hated me. I think now days no matter the race, familys will be terrible.
@@Noxx9939 can happen to any race (cause main cause is poverty), but black abscent fathers are unfortunately overrepresented in America and hence it is very beautiful to see a present father who loves his children. Cause this changes generstions

@Magare Govedo They're saying more black family's because many African Americans are in poor areas ( due to racism) and cant afford to have kids and usually divorce because of that. While there are still white/Asian/Indian family's who are broken, many are African American
Yes, please teach our chocolate babies how to swim EARLY. It teaches them not only to swim but it increases their confidence and awareness around water.
All kids need to swim esp when they live near water. I am Canadian and my ex and I went to Tennessee and my girl and I went to the pool. It was very crowded, suddenly I noticed all the people were getting out of the pool all at once. Soon there was me my girl and this father with his daughter,
He says to me why r you not getting out of the pool. Stupid me said why did you pee in the water, it was a joke but he didn’t take it as that, so I went to the life guard and asked do we have to get out of the pool he said no. .
I went back to that father and said no we don’t have to get out of the pool . He says you don’t get it do you? Then I got mad and said how about you just spit it out. You r playing games with me but you r correct I have no idea wtf is going on here. So he told me he was a black man and white people don’t want to be in the pool with black folks. Omg I was so embarrassed my face was red. So I said well sorry sir you r stuck with me in here and I am stuck with you so let’s enjoy this pool together then my daughter embarrassed me. She says to me mama look at this little girl she is so dirty, and my girl started to wash her arms. Before I could say anything the father said to me let me talk to her. Go for it buddy, so he showed her that the color wouldn’t wash off and he washed her arm and said see your color won’t wash off neither . So we r not dirty god made us this way. Then my girl said oh ok can I play with her mom, I said yes and then I said wait a min . Sir can our girls play with each other? He said yes. So the girls had a great time, later his wife and my husband
came down to the pool and we all got to know each other and then they came to our camp spot and we had a great time….
We were living in a very small community in northern Manitoba and we didn’t have any other races there but white so this was the first time my girl saw someone different. Anyways we had. Good time.

This touched me. As a 28 year old black woman I recently learnt how to swim. I started in April and would go everyday and practice laps. I'm so glad I did because 6 months later I'm a very proficient swimmer and love being in the water. Being in the water is so peaceful.

i am so happy for you omg! i am a 28 year old white woman, born and raised in germany and for us it's normal to learn how to swim from a very young age, i always took that for granted until i heard that many muslim kids, especially the girls, don't learn that growing up, i was shockedbc it's sth so damn important and natural to me. i cannot imagine how deep watermust scare you when you can't swim and i know anything you learn as a child is 200x harder to learn as an adult so i respect you soooo much for doing this as a grown up, amazing!! and yes, being in the water is awesome and peaceful af. ❤

My heart is full. My nephews drowned when they were 8 and 10 years old. The pain is still raw. They also have a foundation -The Bryce and Cameron Jeff Foundation, which funds swim lessons as well. My children, who were a little older than their cousins, can swim, but now the water isn't a source of freedom. They are now 22 and 23 and they were 11 and 12 when this tragedy happened. Please teach your kids to swim. Say a few prayers for my family because the hurt never leaves. On a happier note- I am so proud of the Chocolate Babies.
So sorry this tragic moment happened. My heart goes out to you and your family. Praying for daily strength to face the day and encourage others.

As a black woman who grew up swimming and did so competitively, this is SO important. I was a lifeguard throughout my teen years at city pools and you don't even understand how many black kids' lives I had to save every summer because they just could not swim.
This made me face my own traumatic aquatics. We had swimming lessons in school. The teacher never even bothered with me. You make me realize I don’t have to victimize my experience but I can take control of my own narrative. Thank you.

*I never knew there was a stereotype on "Black people cannot swim". But I do know about segregation and how it plagued humanity for many years, and painfully, it still happens today.*
*I am happy I discovered this channel. It isn't like any other family channel I seen. It's educational, moral, safe, beautiful. It makes me want to learn more about people around me, and if I were ever to be a father, this channel would be my favorite teacher.*

Perfect example why ignorance is bliss. The less you know the better off things seems. But all this is real is or has happened. And people like these that strive to educate that close that gap and bring positive light to the ignorance.

Yes, I never watched YT until I needed or thought I needed a new garage door opener. A friend came over and turned on a YT video for my type of openèr. It showed how to open compartment and put the battery in. That settled my garage problem. A few days later while looking for a Serena replay, I came across an old newspaper article involving young black passengers on a train. I think this was in the 20s or 30s. That's when I learned this channel had a lot of valid black history that had not been doctored or covered up. I thought the truth must be coming out, finally. At work sometimes I would talk to my coworkers on how we are treated. Now they actually believe it. As a boomer I may not be around. However, I hope and believe the future will be brighter for the generations to come.
Thank you for educating me. As a pediatric nurse I’ve long known the disparity in drowning statistics for black children. Sadly, as a white woman I never considered the part that the black community’s lived history played in those statistics, I had attributed the disparity primarily to economics. I want to be part of facilitating black children being comfortable doing and being anything they want to, anywhere they want to, in their beautiful black skin. Thank you for helping me understand.

If you daughter gets in to swimming coconut oil is a godsend? My daughter is a competitive swimmer. During season she’s in chlorinated water 5-7 days a week. I was so worried about her hair. I could tell her she can’t do something she passionate about because I’m worried about her hair. I learned to wet her hair first then apply a lot of coconut oil, the pin it in a bun before her swim cap. After she’s out of the pool I just washed her hair out with a gentle shampoo. He curls were moisturizers and no breakage!
I was like her, in the swim team and eventually, a life guard and I loved it! Everybody else was more worried about my hair than i was. I just wanted the water! I wish I'd have known more about how to protect my hair back then though. I could've saved myself a lot of hair grief on my 4c hair!
I love your channel. As an adopted mom of a beautiful black son I learn a lot from your channel. From basic parenting to slow learning more about black culture and history to help be a better more rounded mom to Thomas and help him understand and embrace his ancestry( hope that makes sense ) love your commentary and family. Point of clarification, Black people from America, not all Black people. This unfortunately is an American experience of their Black people not knowing how to swim.
@@ShamirYukno many of our grandparents and parents weren’t allowed to swim in the same pools as white folks. I’m sure there weren’t many places for us to swim. Even less for us to learn. So our elders didn’t learn and they couldn’t teach us or see the necessity. My mother took me to Disney when I was 3. I fell in the pool and almost drowned. She couldn’t swim and was scared to death of water so she kept me away ever since. I always loved water and had no fear. I finally took swimming lessons at 40 years old. There needs to be no point of clarification when a black American is speaking on their history. We don’t owe anyone anything when it comes to our experience. Also even though the experience is different I know several blacks from Africa and the Caribbean that don’t know how to swim. I’m actually shocked at how many island people don’t know how to swim.
While I understand the generational trauma and systemic reasons why many Black Americans cannot swim, it’s harmful when framed under the context of “black people.” The diaspora includes a wide range of people stretched out from the Caribbean, Central and South America and the African continent. I was born in the Caribbean and know how to swim, as does my entire family. Millions of us live within close proximity to oceans and we swim.
I'm so Glad you are teaching them to Swim. Swimming is fundamental to having well rounded kids. We loose too many Children to drowning... Well Done Mom and Dad!

I find myself attracted to family channels, as well, because I didn't have a good one growing up. It is important to focus on the positive characteristics that were deposited in you and not on the things you missed out on. Most importantly, think about how lucky your kids are going to be with you as a parent. At 16, you already know and care about what good parenting looks like. You'll be awesome!

I'm 40. You're never too old! I grew up in a home where my mom did not allow us to get "our hair wet", so I never learned, but I am scheduling my swim lessons now. This is just beautiful!!! I was a Physical Education major for many reasons but the most important was to teach kids at a young age that you are both your mind and your body and that people live best when they learn to care for both the mind and the body. Glenn has such a fantastic eye for the edit and exactly the right tone to encourage not just his own family but he saw the potential to reach out to many families. I am in awe of those people inspired to learn that water is a place for everyone to recreate and just enjoy nature, exercise your mind and body, and find a sense of self confidence in learning to be in a new environment. Brotha seriously this is so well executed. I had goosebumps watching your babies bask in the pool it reminded me of my childhood. What you brought to the forefront too is shedding light on yet another underlying Black American experience where even my own mother-in-law who was born in Mississippi in 1953 never learned to swim. So when her grandson was born she was 48 and decided to take swim lessons with him...and then the curse was broken... and I would happily watched the 2 of them in the backyard swimming together with the instructor and I can't tell you how much I have valued her bravery and willingness to overcome her fear of swimming💞🙌🏿to prepare her grandbaby for the water.

My mother was a swimmer and the only black girl on a community swim and life guard team. She literally threw us in to learn and we loved it.

I was never so aware of my otherness as a Black kid as when I was going to swim lessons. I was always the only Black kid in the class until my cousins joined me and we were an anomaly for years. Later on I went to work at the Y as a camp counselor and the number of Black kids that don't know any water safety was scarily and depressingly high. The year I started I had a White co-worker who didn't know how to swim and after getting dunking on by her 8 year old campers she applied herself to learning how to swim. Most of my Black co-workers didn't know how to swim and weren't concerned about learning how to. I don't think they understood how modelling indifference to learning swim skills affected the kids in their care but it's something that I've seen in a lot of Black folks. Pushing kids into the pool isn't teaching them life saving skills, it's ingraining trauma and makes it harder to learn swim skills later on. Accepting that the water is a place for us really is the work of generations and it's great to see whole families doing it together.
Always remember this: If you can shout "I'm drowning!" you're not drowning yet and there is time to use your water safety skills. I've gotten almost killed by kids in 3ft of water who got water in their mouth and started thrashing like a shark. 🤦🏿♀

I feel your comment to my soul. I'm an old white lady and respect what my dad went through in the depression and WW2, without any acknowledgement after by the government or society of the horrors they had been through (they were told it's over, forget about it, forget that your bf in front of you stepped on a land mine and you found his boots smoking with his feet still inside and a thousand other atrocities) I didn't realize just how bad it was until a few months after he passed and the movie Saving Private Ryan came out. Still and all I wish I could have had a dad I wasn't afraid of, a dad who spent time with me, who I could go to for comfort and safety and guidance. A dad who was kind to my mom and siblings. It does my heart good to see these little ones enjoying time with dad and vice-versa and I'm sure you will be that kind of dad too because it's in your heart already 😑💞🙏🏼✝️

My mother was afraid of the water but made sure we took swim lessons to learn. I also have a cousin who is/was a lifeguard. Seeing this made me cry happy tears😍🥰
My Dad is in his 60s about to buy a boat and still doesn’t know how to swim. He and my mom made sure I learned how though and I’ll make sure to do so for my sons. 🙏🏾❤️

My Great grandfather was a fisherman and it was always a shocker to everyone and even to myself when I learned that he drowned at sea.Our family has an underlying fear for the sea that we have never over come .But l have always noticed that our people,(African decent) seem to have a phobia for the water and I always believed it was a spiritual thing.Possibly a reincarnation thing.Possibly more ancestral memory of the sea.First time I heard someone touch base with the same idea l always secretly believed in.And to see what the stats show ,makes it even more interesting.Wakanda needs to make peace with ourselves and our tragic history of the seas.lts important you'all.👍🏿
My son hated swim lessons, and the water over his head. Took him from kindergarten YMCA camp until 5th grade summer camp to finally graduate from red (beginners) to purple (intermediate) swimmer.

as a black woman who is a swim teacher, this is an amazing video you've made. being in the water is my calm space & working with children makes the experience even better. the way their trust grows with each class & how my students from ages 6 months & up actively learn the skills is just something that you can't explain. but watching your babies grow comfortable with the water is always an amazing experience & i can't tell you how refreshing it is to see the other side of my job. i always want to be a part of this process for black people & any POC because they can at the least see themselves in a shred of who i am on the outside. plus i love their smiles, giggles, hugs, pictures they draw for me, & everything in between all of the beauty. please keep pushing them to live the life they deserve regardless of what has been taken from the black community.

Best time to teach someone to swim is when they are very young.
@@CheersNE Best time to get someone in the water is when they are an infant. Gets them acclimated to the water so they do not fear it. They can learn to dunk their heads, kick their feet, float, doggy paddle. Some learn to doggy paddle underwater very early. The sooner the better.

My mom put me in lessons when I was 7 at the boys and girls club or something like that. She still can’t swim but I’m grateful she made sure I learned. This was such a beautiful video btw. ☺️

literally wearing a necklace right now that has my dad's sterling silver charm for winning the 50 yd free swim for juniors, 1944. segregation kept many of us from swimming at public pools (in park districts paid with black folks tax dollars mind you). and for those who did allow that one day a week for "colored only swimming", many segregationists would empty out the pool water and refill it as if it was tainted. so, this video means a lot to me. each summer I get heart-crushed when hearing of some young person (or adult trying to save their child) drowning in Lake Michigan. your work is so valuable and important. was also going to mention before you did -apprehension about wet hair had kept (and evidently still keeps) many black women from learning. that's why learning early as children - when hair styles don't really matter - is important. thank you.
My mother didn't learn to swim until she was in her late 50's. Go mama!! I'm so glad she didn't let her age discourage her from going for it.

You’re recording beautiful moments like your kids learning how to swim for the first time, but at the same time attaching meaning and explaining the history behind the high percentage of black people that don’t know how to swim. The meaning and history highlights the importance of this one beautiful experience in your lives.
STORY TIME:
I was never taught how to swim, but I know how to swim extremely well. My mom said she believed it's because she took water aerobics with me while she was pregnant. Anywho, I think about the times as a child that I saved two of my cousins, on two different occasions, from drowning. I was 8 years old the first time and 11 the second time. Now that we are all in our late 20s and early 30s, this video made me think about how my family's life would have been losing young children at that time. How I would feel losing my cousins? It would have devastated all of us. Still to this day, no one in my family really knows how to swim properly. Because of this video I am going to revisit having swimming lessons for all of us, especially the new generation of children that are in our family.

My mother & father learned to swim both of them have near drowning experience they shared individual with me in Nigerian. Yet none of Us knows how to, in fact, I extremely terrified with no reason except to say epicgenetic memory that I do believe. Am 51 it is time to learn.

I almost my sibling one day because I thought she was joking around when she screamed for help. I mean we all were taught how to swim so I was confused... Thank God Almighty one of the other kids was more vigilant than myself and stripped himself of his clothes and saved my sister...

My friend, an outstanding citizen of El Paso, Texas and great athlete, drowned in a small lake near our town. It devastated our community. It was 40 years ago and I still feel it. So I’m so glad that you are doing this for your children. Step it up even more and have teachers or coaches help to learn to swim in the ocean and lakes for their own safety. And I must say, with a bathing suit and cap like that, I’d be swimming every day. Styling.

This video stopped my in my tracks. The mixture of history and real time documenting is outstanding. We are so lucky where I live here in Alaska… swim lessons are part of the elementary school curriculum because we live on an island. It’s a must for all of us. Your kids are absolutely darling.

Thank you for making sure your kids learn to swim. I didn't learn until I was in my 30s. I had a fear of the water and didn't even realize it. I taught myself not to fear it. My parents never learned to swim.

I’m so happy you addressed black people and water. I was just talking about our Ancestral trauma a month ago. I want to learn how to swim as a child I had a very traumatic experience and I just recently started getting in the pool on my own.

At 3 years old, I made sure my angel learned how to swim.
Fast forward, one day we go to the beach, my sugar is now 5 years old. She asked, "Mommy can I get in the ocean I know how to swim GOOD?!"
Yes, but stay near the waters edge because Mommy can't swim! Not even 5 minutes goes by, and guess who is out in the deep of the ocean?
I screamed ..... "Bebe ... come back to shore!"
I believe I said it about 5 times! NOW, she's on shore, and as I'm drying her off she says .... "See Mommy, I am your shark!" ..... "I can swim like a fish and fast, right Mommy?" Lol, I nearly fainted!

This is making me so emotional!!! My dad and mom took me swimming at that age and over the years I somehow "lost it" and didn't think I knew how to swim. Fast forward 7 years ago I faced my fears and learned again and swam like a fish. Water is my spirit animal. I love the ocean!EVERYONE AND I mean everyone should have the joy I and these kids will experience at the beach and in the ocean. But like dad said lets start at the pool..this channel is so positive 😊

Former lifeguard/swim instructor at an underfunded city pool here. I always wondered why my pool was full of black kids and teens who could barely swim, but my classes had mostly white kids, thank you for explaining and for taking steps to protect and celebrate your children.

I’m happy to see black families teaching their children to swim..Also,depending on what time of year you go to Hawaii (Waikiki )the waves are massive..My husband and I went in Oct 2019 the water was very calm and peaceful, it so beautiful there.
I really appreciate this video. These are things that should be taught to us. The way you tell the history. I hope your children embrace who they are as you do and remember everything you've done for them. Glenn, this is so well done! You are so right. This is only one residual wound of American slavery. I discuss many others in my book I sent you. Bodies of water and closed spaces are a huge challenge as a result of the middle passage--that stuff still lives in our DNA. Kudos to you and Yvette for tackling this issue head on!

I'm a Canadian Black woman so our Black Community's are small. I have no idea of what the statics are here. I put my children in Swimming through the W.M.C.A also it's a mandatory class taught when you're in grade 5 in Canada, It could be different now. Myself I don't know how to swim and I'm scared of deep water. I'll be taking lessons this fall. Thank you for your informative and historical knowledge of Black people and our relationship with the water.
