    They definitely had to remove a lot of characters because c'mon let's be realistic it wasn't going to fit in a two hour movie. I'm actually impressed they managed to tell the important parts with such limited time.

      @@johnnehrich9601 the main storyline is about Alex and Henry, the side events would have been pointless because they would require some type of development as well for them to make sense to the audience and that would have taken another 1hour or more. Yes, screen writing is much different. I continue to be stunned about how they are able to tell events in the story with just a quick few seconds of air time. Visual information is much stronger. I think of the hospital scene where Alex looks at Henry talking to the little girl and you can see in his (Alex's) eyes his heart is melting.

    The scene in Paris is the most sensual, intimate encounter I have seen in YEARS. It’s ALL about the deep connection between Alex and Henry, not just the incredible sexual chemistry that they have.
    And the look that Alex gives Henry after “I’m learning”? DEAD.

    The director has said in an interview that the reason he cut out June from the story is because he realized that he would have ended up with basically 2 half characters if he kept both Nora and June and that they wouldn't have had a lot to do in the film, so they were basically combined into 1 character, Nora. Even still she didn't have a very big role and just kind of disappears at the end. There was a lot cut out of the story or condensed for the film which, the first time I watched it I was kind of put off by but now that I've seen the film like 6 or 7 times and have endlessly rewatched scenes and clips, I am able to separate the movie story from the book story and appreciate them both as separate entities.

    • @orion7060
      @orion7060 Před 10 měsíci +24

      Hot take: June has a marginal role at best. She's important in terms of characterizing Alex, but aside that she does nothing of relevance for the plot.
      Considering Alex is aged up in the movie, and with that his characterization has also changed a bit, June's already marginal role almost disappears, and the only bit that matters (helping Alex realize his crush on Henry) is easily taken over by Nora, who also already has a similar role.
      The choice to fuse June and Nora not only makes sense, but it's a good choice. They decided to focus heavily on Henry and Alex (and rightfully so, it's their story) so having both characters present would have fragmented an already limited screentime alloted to secondary characters.

    • @jonathangill6584
      @jonathangill6584 Před 10 měsíci +17

      @@orion7060 I agree. I saw some article that said it was a shame June was absent because she was Alex’s confidant… except she was only his confidant about matters that had nothing to do with Henry… and Nora was his confidant about Henry. And like you mentioned, in order to focus on Alex/Henry it makes sense to combine the characters.
      Apparently people also have a problem that Alex’s parents aren’t divorced but I’m like, it absolutely makes sense for the film adaptation to keep them married. Ellen’s husband is the most pointless character I’ve ever read in a book.

    • @orion7060
      @orion7060 Před 10 měsíci +6

      @@jonathangill6584 exactly, and also even if June were to be his confidante about Henry, it's something that can be easily attached to Nora. Keep in mind that I'm simply looking at this from a storytelling perspective, this is not negative judgement towards June (I liked her in fact), but simply assessing that in a movie you have strict time limitations, and June is simply not relevant to the plot.
      About his parents: the only valid criticism I've seen about this is that Alex's overachieving nature is attributed to his parents' divorce in the book, and having them still together would change this dinamic. Which is a fair criticism, but I think this bit of his character came through anyways whith his Texas campaign. Regarding his stepdad, I agree. I believe he has 2 scenes and only barely talks in the first one. He seriously may as well just not exist.

    • @tinatinarmainteresebs9255
      @tinatinarmainteresebs9255 Před 10 měsíci +9

      Probably unpopular opinion: I agree with the director's choices on this 100%. I watched the movie first and then read the book and preferred the blended JunNora character much more than them separately - I found June a bit boring and not contributing much, and book Nora just... unlikable tbh... Maybe it's because I watched the movie first and was used to the clearly sibling vibes from JunNora, but I was a bit creeped out and put off by the vibes and the past between her and Alex, it almost felt incestuous to me lol, so I much preferred their movie relationship.
      Also agree with other comments about his parents, Leo was not much important and was easily cut out. In fact every decision about the merging and cutting of secondary characters was very clever and good imo. The only one I feel sad about is Liam, cause I liked him and felt he was bringing something different that no abovementioned character did, but I guess you can say they covered that ground with Miguel, but obviously in a more sinister and dramatic manner.

      @Tustin2121 Před 10 měsíci

      @@tinatinarmainteresebs9255- I’ve read the book several times and was disappointed with the movie, and the character of Miguel had to be the decision I hated the most. He’s utterly useless as a character and his weird turn at the end (putting the crime that Richard’s entire TEAM did in outing Alex on this one random junior reporter with a crush) was just so out of left field that it made me absolutely hate him, and not in a fun “hating the villain” way, but in a bad “wtf were they thinking???” way.
      There’s a lot of other things I don’t like about the movie and just how off the vibes were from my favorite parts of the book, but Miguel had to be the biggest one.

Zahra was an excellent representation on screen of the way the character was written in the book. She was straight off the pages, the way she spoke and her demeanor and energy. She is a little annoying and she nailed that, she does talk with quips that are not super realistic in real life and she is a girl boss all of which she was in the book. No one is saying we like her because she is straight, that’s ridiculous. We like her because she is a good actress who played a fun role really well. @@jhor729yeah, this would make more sense. As Henry and Alex's sex positions don't actually flip-flop, from what we were told in the books. Henry appears to like strictly be a bottom... But their power dynamic IS flexible. So they're technically switches. But not versatile, which is flipfloping sex position wise. I've seen a BUNCH of people use the terms interchangeably when they're not interchangeable terms lmao.
      But if you do want to read about Alex bottoming... there is a plethora of fanfictions that cover this topic ....I'm thinking there's so many specifically because it doesn't happen in the book... Speaking from the perspective of an Asian American, the prince of England means very little to Americans. They're treated like a celebrity but not with the reverence that the British people might have.
    I think Alex is a good partner for Henry precisely because he's able to treat him like a man and not fetishize the sexual act with a royal. (I think Henry may already have his fair share of such partners in boarding school.) There is just trust and love built from mutual understanding of being in powerful roles while setting examples to their countries and western society at large.
    It must be very comforting for Henry to have Alex, who understands what that means while pushing him to make change to the status quo.
    Thoughts?

    • @johnnehrich9601
      @johnnehrich9601 Před 10 měsíci

      One thing to understand, I think, is that it isn't how royalty demands how they are treated, it is the constraints they put on themselves from being raised that way - a prison of their own making. When Queen Victoria was given the news she was now queen, she had to have an attendant escort her up or down the stairs. She felt trapped in all this but even as queen she was not able to dispense with it.

      @Maya23452 Před 10 měsíci

      @johnnehrich9601 That was my impression as well. However, when I see the reactions of our British friends watching the movie, I can tell that there is either an awe or disdain for the royalty. For example, " You can't talk to him like that. He is a prince!", etc. Or "I dont understand why we have a king in the first place." No matter which side of dialogue you happen to hear, you are likely to conclude that royalty is something more than a family historical last name. And frankly, I sympathize as I come from a country (Nepal) that had a king and was a kingdom until 2008. It was a political issue in our country when I was growing up.
      Again, I didn't mean to make a mountain out of a molehill. Just fun observation with anonymous people on the internet.

I am an old fart so I have lots of time to obsess over things like this movie, which I've now seen 6 times. I am of exactly the same mind as you when it comes to movies verses television. The last time I obsessed over anything like this it was "A Place To Call Home" out of Australia and it was made for television . Six seasons and covered 10 years of a family and I could not get enough. I think this movie is so well done I would love for it to be generational. I want to know not only what happens next, but how their lives turn out as well. The casting in this move is simply flawless. Not only the boys, but every single character is brought to life by the actors portraying them. Yes...even Uma's accent darling. In that way, all the characters removed could have been included… and all the included characters we loved (Zahra, Amy, Nora, Bea) could have had more screen time & more in-depth storylines.
    Perhaps Amazon Prime would only agree to a movie format during their lengthy discussions back & forth.

They never hated or even disliked each other, I think for Henry it was love at first site(be it Rio or Melbourne whatever) his reaction was a defense to keep Alex away because he thought Alex was unattainable and in the book Alex has an obsession with a picture of Henry in a teen mag when both where much younger. Thus once they are forced together the whole artifice had to come crashing down. It was years of both wishing for the same without either ever knowing.

    It’s funny, I actually watched Love, Victor (and Love, Simon of course) for my first time after seeing RWRB so I was also pleasantly surprised that Rachel was in that show ☺️
    I want to clear up that, as an Australian, no one in this movie except for Henry pronounces Melbourne correctly. Just one of those things that gives me the ick haha
    I really love how they did the ‘getting to know you’ montage. Which then makes the subpar CGI feel kind of weird in comparison - it’s unfortunately really noticeable and for an Amazon budget it’s kind of wild.
    I had seen someone say that since the characters have been aged up for the movie, they had done a bit more self-actualising than in the book. So Alex being pretty blasé about his sexuality would make a bit more sense in that he’s had time to process it.
    I also agree that a limited series would have been so much better and allowed the adaptation be a bit stronger (i.e. June, the whole Rafael subplot, Bea actually being kickass, etc.) but I can detach myself enough to enjoy the film version for what it is.

We lose a lot in terms of character/contextual complexity, but gain just as much in keeping these two adorable ding-dongs in the forefront.

    Great reaction ! I've been watching way too many of these just to relive the experience of the film... Swooning over Alex and Henry is officially a thing now 🥰I really share with everyone the pleasure of watching (and rewatching 🤭) an adorable queer romance. That being said, there's discussion over the quality of the movie compared to the book, the length/pacing/character development etc. I just wanna add that as far as romcoms go, the level has gone downhill unfortunately. I've just rewatched Notting Hill (1999 for those of us who weren't even born haha) which has some interesting similarities with RWRB : the british/american culture shock, the absolutely improbable premise, the public scrutiny being an element of the plot that keep the lovers apart etc. (not saying it is the same of course). And I must say that the comparison is quite damning 😬 In a similar run time of 2h Notting Hill seems packed with humor and wit, subplots and secondary characters, and real not CGI locations. So it was possible to do better - not a critique of RWRB only though, I think the director did justice to the characters and created the best film he could in the streaming age. But yeah there's that...

And I guess it actually wasn't that far off from a texas accent because people from Texas are saying that they know people who sounds like her, you know?... But yeah I will agree it's a very thick accent and the fact that Alex then has zero accent because the actors from Chicago, if I recall correctly... It's weird. Also because Alex does a slight Texan accent in the book... And I'm petty about small changes like that sometimes. lmaoo

    First of all I have to say the book is one of my favorites. And I know people are going to say the book and the movie aren’t meant to be the same and I’m very aware of that, but since it is one of my favorites i can’t help but compare them because that book means a lot to me. And honestly..I had a lot of issues with this film. Most of it being script and certain choices that they made and then other technical things. But honestly it was just so rushed, I wasn’t invested in their relationship bc it was such a quick jump from them “not liking” each other to then kissing that it just felt kind of jarring to me. I watched it three times to see if my initial feelings changed but no…theres just things that were added that really didn’t serve the story, things that were taken away that would have helped it alot and things that just didn’t make sense. For example…The King wants to deny the rumors after the Presidents office released a statement which they didn’t talk to the Royal place first over??? Like 😭😭 what? That speech didn’t happen in the book until after the talked with the queen if I’m remembering correctly (I did check to be sure) also they never explained why they were in Paris so my friend watching with me who hadn’t read the book was so confused. Also the whole Miguel Ramos storyline was so obvious 😭😭 I get they wanted to simplify the story for the movie probably but it was so….??? it just felt all around rushed and I’m glad a lot of people are really enjoying it bc I’m super excited for queer content like this, just kind of fun and light with Frank depictions of queer relationships but I think it’s okay to be critical of it as well, especially when it’s an adaptation of one of your favorite books. It was a let down for me I’m not going to lie, but I’m really happy for the success and for everyone watching it who loves it!
