    Matthew Lopez said that one if the reasons he made the characters older was to make the forever more believable

  • @alisondiem202
    @alisondiem202 Před 11 měsíci +57

    Stephen Fry is 66. He's certainly old enough to play their grandfather, esp. if in the storyverse he, like Elizabeth II, had children relatively early in life. Charles was born when E2 was 22. Were Charles to follow suit re: early children, E2 could have become a grandmother at 42, for example. Fry can also play older than 66- today's 66+ year old is NOT the same as in 1980, for example.
    re: Alex and Henry- the director actively chose to age them up, specifically Alex(who is in law school, which would require a BA first).
    From an article in Variety:
    "In the film, however, Alex is older - he appears to be in law school - and takes Henry’s kiss in stride, in so far as his attraction to men is concerned.
    “It was born of my decision to cast actors who are older than the characters were in the book,” says López. “I really wanted there to be some genuine stakes and gravity for these characters. If they were too young, you could just explain this away as puppy love. I wanted this movie to be about that first real romance of your life, the first real love affair, the first real love.”
    Rather than tell a story about a kid in his early 20s who is plunged into uncertainty about his sexuality, López says he wanted Alex to be someone who had messed around with guys but “has yet to have a reason to really understand himself as bisexual.”
    The director continues, “I wanted Alex’s angst to not be about his sexuality. I wanted it to be focused on Henry.”
    I think the change is good and the reasoning behind it makes a lot of sense in the story.

      Matthew Lopez said in an interview that they aged up the characters which is why Alex is okay with being into guys and has had 2 experiences with them instead of just with Liam. As someone who saw movie first and read book second, I understand that I dont understand the disappointment with only 2 hours, but unlike you I do want to watch it again and again...I think Lopez said they're 25-26, something like that. So their height isnt the only thing that they changed from the book when it comes to these two characters.

    Oops, I usually agree with you.100%, but I LOVED this movie. I hadn’t heard of the book (though I plan to read it now, thanks to your recommendation) and I really wasn’t expecting much from the Amazon adaptation. I’m American, and I was thinking it would be a cheesy Hollywood version of “Young Royals.” I get that the final product isn’t “Citizen Kane,:” but I was deeply moved by the characters created on the screen by Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zachary Perez. They portrayed a fully believable emotional and physical relationship that almost never gets represented in mainstream LGBTQ stories. Let’s face it, even today, there are LGBTQ couples in mainstream movies and series who barely ever touch each other!!!!!! However these actors identify, , Galizine and Perez created 3-dimensional, fully realized characters and I I have tremendous respect for them. I was kinda surprised how effected I was by their performance/s. Can’t wait to read the book. Thanks, as always.

  • @SeattleSandro
    @SeattleSandro Před 11 měsíci +25

    Ok, so my $0.02 on the movie skipping really important parts of the book. The movie has to make a lot of sacrifices to keep the pace up, or it becomes a 3-hour movie, while also giving you the most important parts of the story. The book is there to fill in all those gaps, to give you a lot of history on Alex (and his years-long, buried crush feelings for Henry) and Henry (and the pain and depression he suffered after his dad died and how he fell in love with Alex at first sight in Rio the night they met). Of course, the book lets you read all those amazingly/disgustingly romantic emails they sent back and forth. For folks who think things are choppy and don't make a lot of sense, read the book, but keep in mind some things have changed for the screen adaptation.

    • @JackieRossLavender
      @JackieRossLavender  Před 11 měsíci +4

      beautiful middle ground! love it! honestly my gripes are not with the film itself… more with the adaption. In my opinion (and only my opinion, this is in no way fact), a 2 hour film is not sufficient to adapt a nearly 500 page novel. Time is what this film needed… so if amazon can’t provide that then amazon shouldn’t be sold the rights. I’m going to make an in depth video because there’s a lot to break down here!

    • @SeattleSandro
      @SeattleSandro Před 11 měsíci +12

      @@JackieRossLavender About your opinion being just that...I watch your reactions specifically for your opinions. That's how this whole thing works, right? :) While I may not always agree with you, I value what you have to say. Now, my opinion. In an ideal world, yes, we'd have a full 12 episode series really fleshing out Henry and Alex's romance, diving into their complex backgrounds. Perhaps RW&RB's success will show Amazon that they can invest in making the sequel (whenever that comes out) a series. OMFG, I would love to see Alex and Henry living in NYC. Henry's running his LGBT youth center and learning to cook for himself, while Alex is off being an attorney. I want to see the new friends they make, I want to see them putting their home together and I want to see Henry be a British Royal fish out of water. Can you imagine Henry having to do groceries by himself? I want to see them have Thanksgiving dinner with President Claremont and maybe even Henry's mom, Philip, and Bea. Perhaps this is the kind of thing we really need to push Amazon and Casey McQuiston for.

    They aged the characters up in the movie to their later 20s. Alex isn’t still in college the way he is in the books, he’s in law school which he presumably would’ve started after finishing a 4 year degree in college. He’s likely supposed to be 27 or 28 in the movie.

      I've heard the director and the author of the book both say that Ellen is from very very rural Texas and so she has an extremely thick accent. 🤷‍♀️ The author of the book is also from the south so I guess I have to trust in that over my own Canadian judgment, ya know?. 🤷‍♀️

    I saw the movie first, then read the book. I thought the movie much more powerful. For me, the book really dragged and there was too much repetition. The movie dialogue was much sharper and more interesting than the book. I would have liked the movie to be longer, though just because the main characters were played so well. I can see them bringing in Richards as the villain but other than that, this movie really did it for me.

    I'm in love with this film as much because it is an intimate, loving portrayal of a developing relationship. To have a queer story that doesnt end with tragedy is a very good thing. Yes, we wish it was longer but within the genre of rom-com this is about how long they are. I'll break the sound barrier for you is my favorite line.
    Somewhat like Lt Uhura we have queer representation as something other than the "maid". In love, pretty, no horrid tragic backstory (yes, i know there is one in the book with Rafael Luna) but the gem of this film is that it feels like a proper hallmark rom-com movue with all the holes of that genre only we have LGBTQI+ representation: that, in many respects is the power of the film. It may encourage others to read the book, to explore more queer media, to see stories other than our doomed love.

In the book, Alex only made that whole speech after the meeting with the queen, and as a bonus he made the speech with Henry at his side. Red, White, and Royal Blue is one of my absolute favorite books and several editions of the novel live securely on my "frequently touched" shelf on my bookcase.
    I want to preface anything further by saying that I LOVED the movie and the cast and think it is a great rom-com.
    This post from me is about the book v the movie and my mixed emotions.
    my main criticism would be the fact that Matthew Lopez's screen adaption, except for the singular actual sex scene, is plainly directed toward straight audiences. the amount of straight people I have seen say that they loved the movie but dont get why their being gay was such a big deal of understand how it could fill out a long novel is mind blowing. Matt Lopez put out a nice rom-com, but it came at the price of eliminating all of the grit, the hard edges, the characters and relationships that made the book so singularly special and NOT a standard rom-com.
    Ive found it very entertaining to listen to reviews and responses from people who have read the bok vs people who have not.

    I squeed when I saw they'd cast THE Stephen Fry as the king in this! Also: the film's King *James* Hanover-*Stuart* is infinitely less homophobic and cold-hearted than the books Queen Mary Mountchristen-Windsor, and seems to care about his grandson a great deal more than his book counterpart.The casting decision, the name they chose - the 1st king who was a Stuart and named James was gay or bi* - and the change in characterization lead me to believe that the creators are implying that the king is himself gay or bi and closeted. Look at Fry's face at 13:09 - that is a look of deep sadness, grief, even! I think it was very clever of the creators too add this meta level of poignancy.
    *= and in the excellent Sky series "Mary & George", you can see our boy Nicholas here play one of his lovers! How meta!

    I have learned that you should watch the movie, BEFORE reading the book. I am so in love with this movie, and then I read the book and it added more to the story. I have seen that many times that someone reads a book, and then sees the movie and is disappointed in the differences. The book allows you to get inside the thoughts of the characters, the movie usually can only show you from the outside. I have watched this movie so many times, and I can't get enough. My favorite scene is in the V&A museum. I'm glad they changed the song from Your Song to Can't Help Falling in Love. It's perfect. Now both the song and the scene make me tear up a little. I don't see the age problem, as inn the book Alex is studying at Georgetown University, and they are both supposed to be similar in age.

It took a second viewing for me to really separate the movie from the book, and enjoy it fully on its own merits as the swooniest fairytale romance! Amazon signed on for a movie, rather than a series, and that was pretty soon after book was published. (I think that’s right. I’m not as invested in the book as most and didn’t follow the news at the time.). And I believe Amazon limited Matthew Lopez to 2 hours. Heck, even a couple of scenes featured in the trailer didn’t make it into the movie.
    Someone down below said it wasn’t a masterpiece & wondered why everyone loved it. I recognize its flaws, but I still love it and seem to watch it over & over. Then again, I don’t think the book is a masterpiece. I liked it (but didn’t love it for various reasons).

    I agree that it would have been better served as a limited series. I will say that I liked parts of the movie more and parts of the book more. Neither, fully knocks it out of the park for me. I was fine with them combining Nora and June as one character. I actually think the book would have been better served in the same way combining characters or not having some. At times, I think the book has character overload, and I’m not entirely sure that they are all necessary. I think the only thing I really missed was the emails. It would have been nice to find a way to incorporate them better into the story. The movie moves too quickly. It would have been nice to get more of that development of feelings and moments. The one thing I wanted from both the book and movie was seeing more into Henry’s feelings and day to day struggles.

    Loved your review/reaction (especially as a brit). I agree on the mini series but I had some fun facts regarding your criticism. The director and writer also agreed the run time wasn't long enough so Alex's feelings about his parents divorce, realising he's bisexual and deeper anxiety about life in general despite being a confident person was taken out. They dealt with these aspects being removed by aging up the characters of Henry and Alex (in their opinion it was more likely that these issues would have been as big issues for Alex if he was older than his novel counterpart).
    June was taken out for similar reasons. June has a bigger part in these storylines (mentioned above). Also Nora and June would have ended up fighting for screen time. No one wanted that (back to the time limit).
    They changed it to King over Queen because they felt like whoever played the Queen would be too strongly compared to so many other famous actresses (eg. Mirren, Thompson, Staunton), I don't know why they felt differently about King but that was the reasoning.
    There were obviously other things cut or changed but that was the stuff I could find. It was claimed the general consensus was anything that didn't have to do with the love story would be scrapped.
    Mini series would have been better but I still loved the movie and thought the casting wad pretty on point.

    I enjoyed it, but agree that it would have been better as a mini-series. The talk when Alex goes to England to tell Henry he loves him was so much more in-depth and provided more context to Henry's earlier comment about not being able to 'afford Alex falling in love with him'. He says "I knew that if someone like you loved me, it would set me aflame. And then I went ahead and stupidly fell in love with you... and you had the audacity to love me back". That whole section of the book made me a wreck as well.

    Even with the changes I still feel the essence of the book. I think that the book and the movie are two different pieces and you can enjoy them separatley, but also complement the movie experience with the book. I watch it with an open mind and really enjoy it. Maybe a Tv series would be better but I always think that with the success thai is having they would renew it for another season and that's when you start to deviate from the original story, just to add more to it. But in the end, I'm happy with what we got, with the history of adaptations...could have been worse.

      you definitely can appreciate them as separate mediums and i commend anyone who can. But i struggle a lot to separate them when I was so deeply moved by the book. Of 19 LGBT novels i’ve read this year it was in my top 3.
      I hear what you’re saying about a show though… but prime are so good at one and done’s. Look and Little Fires Everywhere. So true to the book and such a good production.

      I think that an adaptation, as the name suggests, does not need to follow exactly everything that is in the original material but maintain the essence of the story and in my opinion they managed to do that. For example, The last of us also had some changes but still is the story at its core. Anyway, I see your point.

    While I haven’t read the book yet (I definitely will now) I loved the movie. While movies based on books are always in for some criticism, I loved the performances. From the excellent leads to Uma Thurman and Sarah Shahi and all the supporting cast, everyone had great chemistry. For me, Uma Thurman really walked the line of comedic delivery and the drama of a Democratic President (and first woman President?) feeling the pressure of history bearing down on her in a hyper-polarized environment where a lost election can equal a lost democracy.
    I loved the political aspect of it as an American (who loves crumpets and scones). There’s been some debate about the electoral map, but I could imagine several rust belt states going red out of combined misogyny and homophobia.

    The biggest frustrations for me about this movie - once you get past that it IS a movie and not a mini-series or whatever - are that the CGI is poor in several major scenes which makes it feel like a cheap Hallmark movie (White House balcony scene Im looking at you!), that there are no British TV presenters/journalists which really makes the US presenters stand out. They feel like actors not professional news people. And pivotally, you can tell that this is an American production based on an American novel (this is pretty universally true) because they just DO NOT understand Royalty.
    Take for example the receiving line at the wedding in the beginning. There is no way that Princess Beatrice and Prince Henry of Great Britain (there is no such thing as Prince of England) would proceed down a receiving line having a good goss about how hot Alex is and ignoring a bunch of guests while making snide comments about the cost of the wedding cake. NEVER. GOING. TO. HAPPEN. Also, and this happens in the book too. Almost no mention of the fact that HRH the Duchess of Edinburgh (Henry and Philip's mother) is the heir to the throne! There is no way that the HEIR TO THE BRITISH THRONE would be allowed to just sort of disappear into the wilds and not be a working royal. They dont seem to understand that the line of succession has to be changed by the Parliament and not by some whim of the monarch. And also that they dont get to just opt out. The real Prince Henry has opted out, but notably it did NOT involve a change to the line of succession, because that would involve parliament. I know these are not major things, but they would be so easy to get right and yet the author and the director totally did not!!
    Also, some VERY cheesy dialog. Nicholas Galatzine and Taylor Zakar Perez are amazing as Henry and Alex, but even Nick couldnt save that horrendously cheesy line "I will no longer be the Prince of Shame...") Cringe. Also... the head-spinning change of heart when Alex comes to see Henry and they end up in the V&A. One minute its pretty much over then suddenly with no warning Henry wants to show Alex the V&A?? Hmmmm.
    Jackie, I appreciate what you said about the age of the actors, but I think for a movie they had to age them up so that they could cast them and have them actually have a physical romance without all hell descending on them! hehe Mostly I love the movie, but every time I watch it, Im aware of the same problems. Mostly the financial ones that stopped the backgrounds etc looking real.

    I still have mixed feelings about the movie but it has some gems in it and when Nick and Taylor are allowed to shine their scenes are pure gold! Plus I'll never be able to visit the V and A and feel the same again 😂! Nice reaction, thanks for this. Take care.

      I thought it was… fine. Cute, some great moments, good performances, but overall a missed opportunity.

      @@devosoap you’ve hit the nail on the head… it couldn’t. so it shouldn’t. my qualms are with the fact it was adapted into a 2 hour movie which, in my opinion, did a disservice to the the source material.

    Well, I’m waiting for my copy of the book still, so I don’t know how many thing were changed for the movie, but what I’m sure is that I love main characters and can’t imagine anyone else as Alex and Henry. And I think I would not enjoy this this movie this much if characters were “student age”)))
    Them causally visiting each archer on different continents without their families questioning it more believable if they are in mid/late 20 imo
