LONGEST RIDE I'VE EVER DONE - Orlando to Miami - Worst Retirement Ever
Vložit
- čas přidán 20. 06. 2024
- In need of training miles and a soul ride on a trip to catch up with family, I decided that instead of trying to train in Orlando and Miami where we were visiting, I'd see if I could ride there instead of taking the rental car.

Heyo! That’s the way you Butt’r Up. Thanks for being an awesome partner and for all you do for No Kid Hungry. PS anyone that nominates a non-profit for our final Bike Month Grant in Phil’s link in the description is automatically entered to win weekly giveaways in May! #happybits
Cool to see sponsors supporting!
@@liam2134 thank you and happy trails out there!
@Chamois Butt'r I love your stuff! Been using it for 7 years now. Great product.
The accidental slo-mo cracked me up.
I thought it was a play on the Papa John’s interview and had me rolling...”40 pizzas in 30 days” consecutively slowed down
Only Phil could talk his way through a 9 hour ride and keep me entertained. The wit is undeniable.
3 Rules about Biking in Florida:
1. You can never, ever stop pedaling. "Coasting" is the 5 seconds of relief you get coming off an overpass.
2. No matter which way you go, there will always be a headwind.
3. No matter what time of year it is, you will sweat more than it seems should be humanly possible.
you made me try to get a hair off my screen lmao
"I realize what I did wrong, aside from this being a bad idea." 😂😂😂😂 We've all been THERE on a bike.
Is it a bad idea though ? My best rides have been bad ideas then. HAHAHAHAHA The only thing you really needed was some sort of bike seat pack.
This is the best description of Florida and Orlando I’ve ever heard
"A place that shouldn't exist"? 😂
Orlando is Sim City come to life…
I have roots there. Agree.
A riding buddy of mine who grew up in Florida, says he didn't see his first mountain until he was 16. He outclimbs me in my native San Gabriel Mountains in SoCal.
@@mrrodriguezHLP I think Floridians tend to be okay climbers for the same reason there are so many good Dutch climbers in the WorldTour: Your entire ride is constant tempo and at least half of the ride is headwind resistance training. You develop a very rhythmic pedaling style from just doing a bunch of steady state riding.
Three buddies and I rode Cocoa Beach to Miami last month - and faced the same south wind. It's like you said; flat land is like a mountain. And when you add wind, it's even more like a mountain! We left Cocoa Beach at 5 am and arrived downtown Miami at 10 pm. (The day before we rode Kingsland, GA to Cocoa. Then third day rode Miami to Key West.)
215 miles was my longest. But with hills, overnight (start was 3pm), in a group, and some "decent" café stops. Think we took about 15 hours in the saddle.
One sure way to know if you have good bibs, and a good saddle, is to go for a crazy long ride and see if your opinion changes by the end of the ride.
very true
And a good bike fit
OK, the slow-motion combined with the 7-11 pizza is pure gold
In north florida, it’s gate station pizza all the way.
Since you've fallen in love with long, flat, featureless rides, registration for the World Time Trial Championships for 6, 12, and 24 hours in Borrego Springs, CA opens on June 1, 2021. The event is Oct 8-10 when it'll be a little cooler.
i love riding, and used to TT as a junior. but 6 /12/ 24 hours? always thought that is crazy
Living in Florida, I wouldn't even know if my front derailleur was broken. I should probably just convert the bike to 1x, lol.
I'm in SE Louisiana. I have a 1x.
I live in Tampa FL.
I got a 50t chainring 1x.
No hills except maybe some bridges here and there in Clearwater area but flat flat flattttt
Lot's of riders in Florida are doing 1x. 30% of our group are gravel 1x bikes
I'm from Colombia the mountain Paradise.
Then I went to Texas and now everything feels lonely flat and a bazillion miles away!!!
Rarely need brake pads, for those still riding rim brakes. 😎
Long rides are awesome. I did a non-stop 513km (4,300m) ride in 2021 and loved it.
Good one. The "spittle" coming off the lips in the first hour was gold. Then the slow-mo, gold as well. I was also glad to see that a headwind does indeed affect skinny climbers just like it does us big guys. Though your 12 mph would have probably been about 8 for me. LOL!
that's how i felt when I did my last double century..... good job Phil made me laugh
"My Di2 could have died two hours ago...' Hahaha 100% real talk
That slo-mo at the end with 7-11 pizza is exactly what it feels like to ride yourself into the weeds.
Phil, the “Florida hills” as you know, are the prevailing 20 mph winds that you feel on your out and back rides. “Man I feel great today”, get to the turn around point and die on the way back. Biggest climbs were the overpasses. It is a wake up call as to out of shape I am having moved from Florida and having to climb even small hills.
I live in the flat fenlands of eastern England....Strong winds virtually all year round......I'd possibly do alright for 30 miles in Florida (he says)
Excellent video. That first 5min is where I do all my riding and yes they do go by you at 60mph all the time. It's really fun when the traffic picks up.
I feel for you! My longest ride was 159 miles. With a 20yr old 3x9 Cube Attempt, sub 10kg, 1.400 meters up, 11hrs moving (plus _some_ breaks). Everybody should try it! But please on a route with plenty of shops and gas stations for supply 😁
I'll repeat it asap, with my new bike, 10kg less fat and some miles on my training plan. Maybe 10 hrs, who knows.
So in fact the Dutch mountains are bigger then the ones in Florida!
Nice video. Thanks for taking me along for the ride. Also, thumbs up for enjoying a Topo Chico on a ride.
Head wind in FL. is what we call a Florida hill except it last the whole ride well atleast half the ride usually,
Cool video and glad I stumbled across your channel. It was so cool to see your ride right past my neighborhood on Narcoossee (3:15 ish). Really entertaining and your description of riding in FL was spot on!
missed the chance to name your route "Florida Man" so it resembles crazy news headlines
So much fun!!! Thanks for letting all us tag along😊
You two are funny!!😁😊haha 😁😁
Beautiful ride, thank you!!🙂
What ever happened to gatorade gum , I miss that stuff!!😊
Cheers!!🌟🌟🌟🌟
great effort!, your commentary was funny, thanks for filming this ride
I really enjoyed this. One of my favorite winters was spent training in Gainesville.
Awesome! I miss Florida! Thank you for this!
Awesome! I rode with you, the whole way, the whole 20 minutes of the vlog 🤓
Almost choked on my coffee when you told the manatee story.
When I pushed play, the very last words I thought I would hear would be “Manatee Sex.”
I’d like to watch a video of Ted King watching this video.
Superb vid Phil. Annoyingly, for you. I think you just found a great new video format. Bad idea rides :)
I agree with you Phil! It was a bad idea for a ride...especially riding for so long on a highway😲
Nice video. Consider the Katy Trail rail-trail in Missouri. It starts relatively near Chamois Butt’r world headquarters and goes to just outside St. Louis. Pancake flat crushed limestone free of cars. FKT is ripe for picking...
Yes!
Man, I love your videos.. I love the humor.
Thank you!
Yay Emily! Gotta say the slo-mo was perfect.
Got my 100 in, went to the site, free cookie mix, then added dark chocolate cookie mix, then added sugar cookie mix!
I’m in Miami and been meaning to make that ride in reverse 🚴🏿♂️💨
By my calculations you’d have a great tailwind for that!
It will still be flat, lol. hope you prepare properly
What about Sugarloaf Mountain near Ferndale????? 😉 🚵♂️ Did you mention Dan Larson? Former teammate of mine, back in the 90s.
Nice job! I once went 162 in 7:32 (Ride Across Indiana) and didn't walk right for about a week. You did well on a tough ride!
No wonder you're a former pro. I looked at your Strava stats for this activity and they reflect a 95.9% on Z2. Training done to perfection.
Lake Alice, there was a guy there in the early 70's called gator man, he fed them marshmellows
Well done Phil. We've taken our grandkids to Orlando twice and I couldn't find anywhere to hire a bike but given the Gators thats probably a good thing.
Phil your comedy timing is underrated
Love your rides, quirky and cool. Come ride Colorado some time!
It is funny you mentioned Publix and Panera. Those are two of the first three jobs I had when I lived in Florida (where I grew up).
You’re allowed to carry on CO2 containers, I think 2 of them, for “personal floatation devices”, but you can’t check them. FYI for future flights :-)
Loved the commentary on this one....sounds like single-speed would be good in FL ! lol
Just found your channel today my friend. Liked, subbed and rang the bell way over here in rainy scotland. Jealous od your Great weather. Take care
Thank you!
The accidental slo-mo is a great fit for how I feel when I am bonked. I usually end up with a Mountain Dew from that 7-11.
The slow Mo was absolutely hilarious
My longest ride ever was 206 miles. I do a yearly 200 mile ride to help fight human trafficking. #BTC200 #BreakTheCycle200
holy shit. impressive. my longest ever was about 135 miles 6.5 hours with a buddy in late teens. FANTASTIC CAUSE
Me too Jeff! Love BTC200! I have done it twice!
Trafficker: Marie, you're spared today because some Jeff guy hates himself.
@@Here2shtpst what are you saying?
I need me a ride like that for a change. Flat but not as straight. Finished the Cookie challenge the other day and ordered the gaiter. Looking forward to it,Phil!
Enjoy!
I live in Vegas we have a Wednesday group ride that starts at 8, it’s 8:02 am I’m watching your video.. thanks Phil 😂
Get out and ride!
Crazy to see you in my hometown, Loxahatchee!
Just recently took a very similar route via a rental car in April. Stopped for pics at the Port Mayaca Lock and Dam (appears at 14:14 in the background).
"Full body workout" This is brilliant :)))
Thought Ontario was flat :D Great ride Phil, awesome distance.
Indeed, changing one of mine to 1x as the only ‘hill’ near me is Gatineau
I moved from Colombia to Montreal and I thought I was having a bad time finding some climbs around. Thanks God I didn't move to Orlando LOL
Never been a pro, just a lifelong avid amateur. Longest one day ride ever was from the mouth of the Jedediah Smith River, at seal level, 149 miles to Ashland, Or., with 85 pounds of gear in 9.5 hours. There are about 3500 vertical feet of climb along the way. It was sublime.
Florida riding is awesome, especially when you can see the water ;)
Phil at its best!!!
Heat, especially in high humidity, is brutal. I had to bail touring the Cowboy trail in August for the same reason.
Love the three sector. Easy, pace, and it sucks. Haha happiest retirement ever!!
Lucky you. I was given a finnish bicycle with a planetary gear last weekend my friend, the bicycle master, it was pink and it's maximum speed was 25 km per hour, so I started at the maximum speed equal to your speed after going non-stop for a day!
Alligator WHOOP scores. "Waiter, we'll take the check now..."
The head wind makes up for lack of hills.found that when cycling Norfolk uk many years ago.
lol at the slo mo in the end
From south/center FL and that scenic trail around the lake is extremely boring and the view never changes
Central Florida has great trails, great hills, great old small towns and is nothing like what was portrayed in the video. Quite a brutal ride against that wind.
The condescension definitely comes through.
@@joshuaroe11 the U.S. triathlon headquarters is right outside of Orlando in Clermont. Wonderful rolling hills and even Sugarloaf Mountain.
@@jamesquinn5650 as a fellow Floridian, I should have been more clear. I meant Phil’s. I almost stopped watching when he was complaining about building a Publix and then stuff springs up around it, like Chili’s.
U nailed it about Floriduuh.
Man that is some boring ass terrain. Fair play for getting as far as you did Phil.
I'll take hills any ride over endless wind. LOL!
Me too,but i live in northern Germany where there are no mountains at all!
So i always have to fight the wind-the closer to the coast the more powerful......😩💦
Alligator Whoop scores through the roof... Ffr laughing and can't stop.
Geez, I did that ride with panniers in the late 70s.
I needed to catch a plane from Orlando and took a bus back from Miami.
The ride from Orlando took 20 hours as I remember, maybe more.. What a mistake.
Love the random musings on a boring ride
Hey! How about the Mid Atlantic 12/24 . The race is in Washington North Carolina on August 14/15 2021. It is a 26 mile loop that you do as many times as you can in either 12 or 24 hours. There is also a 100 mile race and a 100 mile ride. Its really fun. My best showing was 337 miles in 2018. It is a blast!
Phil, what camera do you use? Very steady and clear!
@Phil Gaimon if you want some interesting 'hills' of FL come on out to Dade County (San Antonio FL). Can't believe I missed that you were in town for a FL ride.
I was just looking for the name of the cycling clothing company. I bought from them before with your discount and am very happy so I'm getting more. I hope your discount still works!
If you want hills around Orlando you have to go to Claremont. There's plenty of hills on a 60 mile loop. Probably 7%-10-12%.
Man, look how perfect that tarmac is. Massachusetts roads are terrible.
Here's another long one Phil. Join 2000 other riders and ride the STP, Seattle to Portland. Although 6000+ riders go for the two day version, 2000 challenge themselves and do the full 204 miles in one day!
Nice! I miss FL but not the cycling. At least NWFL has a "few" hills. You might actually get a 1000 ft in a 50-mile ride if you try. Silca mini-pump = 400 pumps for ~90 psi. I've counted LOL.
Spittle in 4k. That's some quality film.
I used to coach for Team in Training and met riders from Florida in Lake Tahoe at America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride. They told me they did hill repeats in parking structures because there are no hills big enough anywhere . . . .
take care you guys. I'm holding down the area here. ;)
Pizza is a savory cookie, change my mind.
I mean, are pies just considered savory cookies?
Are raisins to cookies what pineapple is to pizza?
@@barretdunbar9114 no, of course not. Raisins are a great addition to some cookies- like an oatmeal raisin cookie. But, Pineapple has no place on a pizza and in fact when pineapple is present on a pizza the pizza ceases to be pizza.
@@scottf3456 clearly you've had neither chili marinated pineapple nor Dad's Oatmeal cookies or you would feel much the opposite
I’m not interested in wasting my time
Manatee tale makes the watch worthwhile.
Curious if you planned on this beforehand and how you fueled the day before, also, what did you actually eat during the ride if anything?
Just for the record, Tiger King country is in Oklahoma. Carole Baskin country is in Tampa (Big Cat Rescue, she has not been affiliated with that organization for years though). So I don’t think you were anywhere close to either. Hilarious video, thank you for sharing!
Sun, heat and humidity are they worst for endurance riding. 👍🏻💪🏻
Yeah, like that headwind is nothing.
Phil-I have a course for you that I call the ColLee Pizza Tour. It is a 200 mile loop around Collier and Lee counties, leaving and ending out of Naples on the west coast of Florida. We use gas station pizza as our fuel and would love to have you join us in November!
Oh my gosh, I hate those noisy, busy roads, I always plan my routes along small, quiet roads.
North Florida has plenty of hills. A less than 20 mile ride in my neighborhood (Tallahassee) will get you 1,100 ft of climbing. Go Noles!
As someone who road the NW all my life only essentially...Im impressed with the flat land riders.
I live here in Florida and you did not do Sugar Loaf Mountain in Claremont? LoL. I would have loved to see your time on it. (Just a hill). Florida is flat, there are pockets of rolling hills. Horse country around Gainesville for example. Good ride, I like your videos.
I did a video on that a couple years ago!
Cool, just checked; you are 2 Sec off current KOM on it. I’ll have to look up the 2018 video. Thanks.
Note sure if you’ll see this but I’m at UF and we now have a cycling and triathlon team! We have twice now done a ride from UF to UCF 144 miles and often put on smaller event rides.
Would be cool if ya came out to one of our events sometime both teams have Facebook pages you can contact.
Ur vid just popped up in my recommended and then I heard UF thought I’d mention it!
