A lot people don't know about this, including the Philippines.
When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118!
It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea.
And it wouldn’t be complete if I don’t include the fact that the USA bought the Philippines from Spain for $20,000,000 USD, right at the time when Filipinos were fighting for independence against Spain… obviously Filipinos didn’t take this lightly.
I’m Filipino and I’m not even offended. I always wonder why our country remains poor, and it’s because of the word “lack” in general. Lack of IQ, lack of governance, and lacking everything (even if we have enough resources).

America said that it's support to philippines is ironclad and any attack on philippines' military, navy and coast guard will invoke the mutual defense treaty of both countries, for the first time.....a philippine coast guard was attacked and sure to be destroyed with water blast if the coast guard did not retreat. The vessel nearly destroyed indangering its crews, local and international reporters on board.....again as what allies usually say "we condemn blah, blah, blah....." this issue is not merely a territorial dispute but more as international dispute because international waters is illegally occupied, reefs destroyed to make artificial island which again illegal, for it was militarized after saying it was only a refuge for distressed fishermen, intrusion to economic zones of several countries and so many more international law violations. Yet the world watches on to this brute country acting like a villain in a world stage of reality.....philippines is a david standing up to goliath, never stopping to face any danger. The irony is the whole world is also being challenged indirectly and intimidated too by the message it sends that this bully can do wharever it imposes because everybody is simply .......a coward.

The Americans knew what they bought from the Spanish. Now the Mickey Mouse wants to claim Chinese islands as theirs.
The mischievous trouble making Americans would not tell the Pinoys the truth, and would not show them the map. There was no state called the Philippines but colonised territories of Spain, to be sold from one buyer to another.
