    Great work! Having worked in the fitness equipment industry for many many years I can tell you that you saved a TON of money making this yourself. New decks are stupid expensive and having someone come out to install it only adds to that. I have replaced so many over my time working in that industry.
    As for the comment about whether or not to use the deck lube...we would typically use a treadmill wax stick. Basically it is a long paint stick with a block of wax attached to the end. You would walk on the treadmill to warm up the deck and the belt and then lift the side and rub the stick around all over at the points of contact (about a third to half of the deck) and it would spread more while using it. Many of the manufacturers would say to not use the spray lube because it can tend to gunk up and stick all over the rollers, but we never really were able to validate that as most people that buy treadmills end up rarely using them.

      Cool, thanks for the info! I'll take a look for some of the wax. Ya I was worried about the oil gunking things up too.

    Hi, most of the reason for treadmill decks being so thin is to provide some flexibility and give to the surface so that you have a more cushioned running experience. This will be like always running on concrete.

    • @kerrybill1017
      @kerrybill1017 Před rokem +4

      I wonder if you get the wobbly leg experience on this one with the thicker deck.

    • @jonathanfenne4948
      @jonathanfenne4948 Před rokem +8

      Can always remove the plate and mill it thinner on the back side. It's rubber mounted so will provide some cushioning.

    • @hanshans387
      @hanshans387 Před rokem +3

      might be able to compensate with some thicc rubber under the fastners?

    • @SebastianGrans
      @SebastianGrans Před rokem +19

      I doubt that having a solid running surface on this treadmill will be an issue considered that people run marathons on asphalt.

    • @007KrausBean
      @007KrausBean Před rokem +3

      That all depends on the treadmill and how it is built. This one has thick rubber under each of the screws and they will absorb a bunch of impact. Yes, the decks are thin to flex as well, but that is really a relative thing based on who is using it. Most of the time the rubber under the screws is plenty for this and the thick deck will make it last a million times longer.

    Loving how frequent videos are now :) walking backwards (holding the handrails) on a treadmill that's turned off and using your feet to slowly push the belt round is an *amazing* knee exercise btw!

    Perfect timing for this video! I spent an hour last looking for online info on building a new deck for mine. Please keep us updated on how the laminate works. I read posts that it has too much friction and will strain the motor over time. Replacement decks seem to phenolic but I'm not willing to sink $200 in a 20 year old treadmill. Gym looks great.

    Nice fix. Wax is the right stuff, you want to avoid anything that has the potential to create gunk, it actually has an adverse effect, wears out the tread. One other thing, from personal experience after i re-skinned my deck, bevel the leading edge. If the skin ever lifts, less chance of ripping the tread.

      It doesn't really need one, I'd imagine the plywood didn't overshoot the roller diameter

    • @kenc2257
      @kenc2257 Před 9 měsíci

      I don't think you need any radius easing on the fore/aft edges of the deck itself. There are big/thick (fairly large diameter) rollers both in "front" of, and also "behind" the deck, which ensure that the walking belt doesn't see any sharp edges as it rotates.

    • @Alkivar
      @Alkivar Před rokem +3

      I had the same thought at first.but you've got the rollers at either end of it putting the belt under tension, so it never really rubs the end of that board.

    • @rainfallprojects501
      @rainfallprojects501  Před rokem +2

      Ya the rollers are actually slightly higher than the deck, so the belt doesn't hit the front edge at all. But I bet it wouldn't have hurt to round over the front, I hadn't thought of that

    Would be interesting to see someone do this but with a chunk of Teflon instead and show the friction difference. I've always found on treadmills upon coming down and it 'biting' into the deck you can slightly feel it slow down and Teflon is some crazy slippery material lol

    Wishing I could make a wide treadmill for my brother. He has cerebral palsy and treadmill training helped him when we were kids, but his gait makes him walk pretty wide, and all treadmills that I can find are so thin.
    He needs a belt size of 21 inches wide minimum, and everything as wide as that is commercial and costs 2k+. We don’t have the kind of money to do something like that, and it feels like everything is always just out of reach.
    One day I will be smart and skilled enough to build something like this on my own, but for now, all I can do is watch and fantasize.

Seems like it would be too heavy/thick for flooring, or standard furniture...I guess it could be the top for a very strong & sturdy workbench?]
