  • Watch my Subaru Ascent Off Road, as it crawls and climbs over all sorts of fun terrain. The terrain gets mostly tougher as the video progresses. Mostly, the video is just another excuse for me to show off my Ascent having some fun on the trails and in the sand.
    Either way, enjoy watching my Ascent claw its way over through some fun terrain, even when on only two or three wheels.
    I really have tons of fun off roading my Subaru Ascent everywhere!!!

    Nice video. Has your ascent been reliable? I need a 7 seat vehicle and you can’t beat the price on the ascent. I have an Impreza now so I know they’re amazing in the snow. Just a bit worried about the ascent transmission…..

      Thanks! Considering what I do to my Ascent, it's been very reliable. Early on, I had a CVT issue (one of the recall issues), but Subaru painlessly took care of that. Otherwise, the car has been amazing, even with the regular off road abuse I put mine through!

    @2:43 Why on earth would you still be carrying around the old small spare tire under the vehicle if you have a spare tire carrier on your hitch? More weight behind the rear axle and more to get hung up on, seems strange.

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +2

      Great question! First, it's actually the same size as the tires I am running. I downsized my wheels to make sure that I could exactly match OEM specs (for both all outer dimensions, and weight).
      Second, it's not that heavy, actually - and still acts as a crash buffer.
      Third, I was being lazy. 🤣
      Currently, it's removed and in storage. Anyway, the donut doesn't get hung up on things (the rear bumper cover does, well before it gets to the donut).

    Too bad it has a cvt. This combination (turbo 4 + cvt) is aweful. I hate the bounciness of the transmission and slow to react (throttle/turbo/cvt) powertrain. Great to see it still has good capacity though.

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +1

      I am sooo not a fan of the fake shifting either (ok, I flat out detest the fake shifting), so, no argument from me on that. But, the CVT helps really well off-road though. If you watch my big Moab Madness vid _(use the chapters feature to find the fun parts)_ you can see where it effortlessly crawled up things other Subies can't. The 4EAT had the most problems. I think it did so well, because in situations like that, it acts like a CVT and puts the ratios wherever they need to be, instead of pretending it's an automatic with gears.

      @@SubaruAmbassadorRobert Robert, I absolutely agree with you. Fake shifting is the worst in every way. I would love the cvt left alone. I would love to be able to keep the rpms up in the power band, instead of dropping. I also wondering about how if the cvt would be perfect for off roading. So it's great to hear you confirm my suspicions. I wish I could un-program the fake shifts.

    What’s the specs on your wheels and tires? Do they rub?

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi! They're an exact outside measurements match to OEM (both width and circumference) and slightly lighter than the OEM 20's they replaced (while slightly heavier than the OEM 18's on lower trims) - thus no rubbing.
      They're Falken Wildpeak AT3W's, 245/65R17's on Liquid Metal Shadows. We tested over four dozen wheels, and found 8only five* wheels in 17" size that are properly load rated for the Ascent *and* can clear out big front calipers (some of the biggest front calipers in the three row segment).

    • @Moto-buddy
      @Moto-buddy Před 2 lety

      @@SubaruAmbassadorRobert hi, so your wheels are 17in and clear the brakes ok? I've read (readylift) recommends 18in to clear brakes. My question is, did you chose 17 for better tire choices, or weight, or both, or neither? I'm considering keeping my factory 18 wheels to keep my budget low, but also want to go up on tire diameter (after I lift it). Should I go with 17 instead? I love the skids. I need those big time.

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety

      @@Moto-buddy hi! Only 5 17" wheels clear the calipers, and they're a real pain to balance. I off-road all over the country, on all sorts of terrains, so, I wanted more sidewall without changing the tire dimensions - my setup is the exact size of stock and weight.
      I don't recommend 17" wheels for almost anyone - I use them for my crazy adventures. Honestly, probably no one should do to an Ascent the things I do on my adventures, lol!!! 🤣

    what is the specs of your wheels and tires? is your ascent lifted?

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +1

      Hiya, I think I had a 1" lift when the video is done. My wheels and tires are an exact match to OEM, in width, circumference and weight. I downsized the wheels though to 17" (there's only five out of forty tested that can both clear the front calipers and handle the weight of the Ascent). Tires are 245/65R17.
      I've run:
      ■ Kumho Road Venture AT51's (which I really liked)
      ■ BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO2's (which I didn't like - too heavy, bad at steering and stopping in snow or ice)
      ■ Falken Wildpeak AT3W's (which I really like and am currently running)

      @@SubaruAmbassadorRobert ok Nice setup. What is your take on LP Adventure's lift kit for the Ascent?

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +1

      @@bubskrz7647 when I was ready to lift my Ascent, with a full understanding of what it does to suspension geometry and Eyesight, I reviewed the designs of all of them, and the only ones in consideration for me were either Anderson Design & Fabrication, Primitive Racing, or RalliTEK for a conventional spacer lift, or Flatout Suspension for a coilover lift, or RalliTEK/Anderson for a spring based lift. I would *not* consider any of the other brands that have lifts at this time.
      I would also only consider Primitive Racing for skids, or RalliTEK. RalliTEK for sliders. Rally Innovations for light bar. I have looked at the other options for those as well, and would *not* use them.

    • @bubskrz7647
      @bubskrz7647 Před 2 lety +1

      @@SubaruAmbassadorRobert Got it. Thanks for your honest answer. Which of the brands you mentioned has a lift kit 1.5" with just using the spacers and retaining your springs and suspension? Sorry I am new in the lift setup lol I have a 2019 Ascent Limited. I would say all the 3 brands are built with quality craftmanship. Which did you go for? If too much to ask which specific lift kit to go for 1 or 1.5"? Thanks Robert :)

    • @SubaruAmbassadorRobert
      @SubaruAmbassadorRobert  Před 2 lety +2

      @@bubskrz7647 Anderson Design has a nice one.
      My first lift was using Anderson's 1" top hat spacers and Primitive's skid plates.
      My second lift is using Eibach's springs, RalliTEK's top hat spacers in the front, Anderson's top hat spacers in the rear, stock struts and shocks, and custom frame spacers that I designed and CNC'd in my shed. Still running with my Primitive Racing skids.
      Key thing with this and the previous setup is that they don't really alter suspension travel much at all, since it relies on the OEM shocks and struts. It's near identical to stock travel,
      My third lift will be Flatout GR40 coilovers (MUCH more than 99% of Ascent owners need - GR Lites or GR Plus would be a better choice for most), RalliTEK's top hat spacers and camber correcting rear lateral arms, and of course Primitive's skid plates.
