  • So cool to hear traditional operatic singing in a video game soundtrack. This episode is definitely heavy on technique and technical singing. Navigating this type of music is definitely not always easy. Speed, rhythm, and breath are all things that can trip a singer up.

Oh man does it. I had all my characters maxed in level and on every job and it took me at least eight tries to beat this boss. When I finally did it was one of my most satisfying gaming wins in a long time.
Thing is, I'm not super great at figuring out borked setups for RPGs so I had to do a lot experimentation and the final battle was a long constant state of hanging on by my fingertips. After I finally won I went online to see how other players did it and saw one player nearly waste the boss' second phase in one move. XD

The roughest part is that each attempt requires you to go through that whole gauntlet of other bosses before it, so each time youre easily looking at like 3 or 4 hours of work, unless youre some kind of speedrunner.

I had a decent setup but was underleveled. I know a lot of people who complained about the "grind" in Octopath but I was never one of them - the game provided so many setups to do things at a relatively low level, but when I first reached the final boss I had one group sitting around level 40 and one sitting around 60. This was the only time I had to "grind" and I did about 2-3 hours of grinding to bring everyone up to around 70, and even then it was an incredibly difficult fight. Definitely the most memorable JRPG boss fight I've ever experienced.

Octopath has some of the best adaptive soundtrack moments EVER. The soundtrack adapts to vamp up what is happening in gameplay for added effect. The prelude to these pieces are written to PERFECTLY loop until the battle kicks in and then it transitions into the main theme SEAMLESSLY. It’s such a cool effect that has to be experienced to be fully understood

Octopath music is fantastic. Absolutely amazing how there are only a few boss themes but they made special transitions for each character theme into each boss theme. Especially notable for themes like Cyrus where it goes from 3/4 to 4/4

The only thing I’d recommend (in case you don’t already know) is to listen to the track “the one they call witch” before this one. It’s basically a two part song and the one they call witch is the first part, has the intro and transitions to “daughter of the dark god.” If this one feels a little incomplete at the start that would be why. So excited to see this reaction vid to this though, I freaking adore octopath and listen to the ost all the time!

Besides the really good battle themes, I'm a really big fan of the game's more calm and atmospheric tracks like Flamesgrace, Guiding Light. The strings that come in at around 40 seconds sound so incredibly warm and welcoming and they always manage to get me emotional

I love this song. Galdera is a very hard boss, his 1 phase has 500.000HP and I think his 2 phase has 200.000HP. You have to be at least LV 70 to beat him. Some pro player can beat him at a lower level I believe ( my lowest Level was 69). And you need some luck in the fight to. But a amazing truth final boss ( secret final boss) and a amazing game❤.

I always try to listen to the title themes of video games. I let them linger before I start playing. Octopath Traveler completely sold me on its Title Theme. I believe that it is so important for games to have a great title theme. Think of it like the "cover" of the book you're about to read.
And it did not disappoint, every single track is stunning and beautifully crafted. Daughter of the Dark God may not be my personal favourite track but does it still make such a strong impact throughout the entire piece. Yasunori Nikshiki left such a everlasting impression with this song and the entire soundtrack of the game.
Thannks for the reaction, Marco! The singer must of had a lot of practice hitting those notes and knowing when they can catch their breath. Those long sustain notes and the fast tempo isn't easy.

For the next time, I recommend you to verify in Octopath which songs use transitions from one theme to another (specially if they have vocals). Taking this song as an example, this is part of a three-part full music, between The One They Call the Witch, Moment of Truth, and finally this one, and they are almost meant to be put together, considering the musical nature of this game.
I say this because I wonder, if that game releases one day outside of Japan, there are other final boss-y vocal songs in a spinoff mobile game called "Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent", and from what I understand, they too have transitions.

If you want to hear the full version, I’ve mentioned this before, but czcams.com/video/vwDSnAhLwto/video.html
    “For Everything” in the context of this video is the intro for every character, which uses “For X”, where they’re all searching for something, which culminates in “The One That They Call Witch”, which, as noted, is the proper introduction to “Daughter of the Dark God”, as there’s actually an interlude piece in the interim of the boss fight switching phases;
Hell, I still haven’t beaten the boss, but it took me 80 hours to even get that far, I’ll get there eventually though!

It's not that old, but this is one of my favorite final boss themes of all time. The way the second phase builds on the theme's of the first and amps the tone up really gets my blood pumping. And what's wild about it is that the way Octopath Traveler works as a game there's a decent chance a lot of the people who played it never even heard this song!
Note about the companion pieces: By now it's been pointed out several times that this is the second phase of the final boss theme coming after a brief transition between it and "The One They Call the Witch." I have purchased the official release of the soundtrack which includes this music and the two phases and transition are all considered separate tracks, so three tracks total. I have no idea why SquareEnix did that and honestly it's kind of annoying. Maybe they wanted to avoid having a near 10-minute track on the album? If you're just listening to the album proper it doesn't matter, but I tend to put my favorite tracks into playlists. So it can be a little weird when the songs pop up randomly and not in the "right order." :P

Funny thing: I first listened to this song around the same time as I started training in operatic style (been a choral singer all my life but only recently started opera). I didn’t notice anything bad about it at the time. Now as I’ve grown as a coloratura soprano, I can’t handle that wobbly vibrato on the high notes. I think the folks who covered it (e.g. FamilyJules, Gametal) brought in singers that did a much better job.

Yea this Fight was a real step up from everything else in the game. Required all characters to be very strong. And you basically had to have some sort of cheese going, and if not you better be level ~75 across the board. Took me 4 tries even with a great team.

If you like this one, you'll be happy to know the sequel is not only out, but the final boss theme of THAT game, "Vide the Wicked" followed by "Those Who Deny The Dawn" is (in my opinion) even BETTER than this one! Highly recommend!

HAve you ever seen Google´s Blob Opera? there are a couple of decent videos in YT using it, but It calls my attention how it reduces a melody to 4 voices, which makes you appreciate certain elements that are easily missed.
