- Foster care adoption can be a very interesting path to take! Many parents worry that when they adopt older kids they might not get to have many "first time" experiences with them. In our opinion, that is not something to worry about! Today I'm sharing all of the first time experiences we had with our older kids we adopted from foster care.

Just got our adoption placement call yesterday for 14, 11, and 9 🎉🎉
Congratulations those are wonderful ages!!! Kids are so awesome as preteens and teens.... challenging but awesome
Congrats!!! That’s amazing. I’m wishing you guys the very best!
Congratulations! My sister and I were adopted at 11 and 9! Those are great ages! You all will have a lot of fun memories to make!
That's so exciting! 🎉
Congratulations!!
One of our kids was with a lovely older foster couple but rarely went outside. He was so pale and when he went out into the sunshine he blinked rapidly and smiled and laughed, so full of wonder. We took him from an urban setting to the country and he blossomed, it was amazing to see and so full of firsts.
Oh that is so wonderful! 🥹
🏙 My sister and I had a lot of those first when we were adopted! Our town didn't have even a Wal-Mart, so when we went to a mall for the first time, we might as well have been on Mars. lol I remember for first time riding the escalator and the fancy glass elevator! It's kind of wild to look back on those things.
I’m sure it was so strange to experience all of those new “normal” things!

I am a lifelong bachelor with no connection to adoption. I suggest a trip to the local park. I just never stop to "smell the roses", so I try to go to my local park once or twice a year. Small numbered signs are in the ground all along the hiking trail. Near the playground equipment and the picnic tables and the shelter, a display board tells about all the different trees, by number. My park has freeway noise coming from the other side of the forest, but I ignore it and have a great time.
I might also suggest going to the theater and seeing a movie the child expressed interest in.
Museums -- I second that ! Once upon a time I saw the air and space museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, and it was absolutely worth it. Even with a decent college-preparatory math and science education in High School. Actually seeing what you briefly learned about in class was exciting.
Trips to the local planetarium can also be an eye-opener. I will also be driving a couple of hours to see the eclipse in Bloomington, IN in March 2024.
My initial home study and interview is next week. This video was timely and valued, especially since my goal is to adopt a child 10 and up out of the foster care system. Thank you for making this!
I LOVE your videos and all the information you share. Thank you! ❤

You are so welcome! Thanks for watching 🥰
🌆 I love to hear about all the firsts! This list shocked me too. The more I see your experiences with the kids, the more I'm leaning toward adopting older. My primary reason for wanting to adopt very young is that I thought they would have experienced less abuse or trauma. Also, maybe they wouldn't have developed poor behaviors/habits that would be extremely stressful to manage. You've talked about this alot and so I'm much more open to the idea. The "first" that really got me was that they are proud of their grades. Wow, that is a tear-jerker🥲.
I definitely understand those concerns about adopting older kids, but not all older kids have intense behavioral needs! I’m glad you enjoyed the video 😊
I moved away from my hometown at age 11 to a bigger city. I'm still there to this day.
Thanks
