  • In this video we look at the very first of Coleman's Instant-Lite lanterns, the L220, examine how it works, how it's different from later 220s and 228s, then take it apart and do a full restoration.

    Nice complete rebuild. Just picked up a U.S. L228 slant (with the big hat). Helpful runthrough from breakdown and cleaning to light. Thanks for posting. In Maryland USA

    A few months ago I had to stop working because I needed to have surgery on my back. A 2 level lumbar fusion.
    While sitting at home recovering, I got ahold of a 200A and I was checking out videos on how to refurbish it when I stumbled onto this video.
    A slant? Never heard of those until watching this video. Now, along with 12 other lanterns, I have 2 of them, a 5/28 228 slant and an 11/28 228 slant. I paid 20 bucks for the 11/28 and after changing the pump leather and cleaning out the check valve, it fired right up. Your video will help me to restore these since they are sooo different than any of the others that I have. Great job! Looking forward to more.

    Thank you William! You saved my rear again. I've got 2 Slants in my collection and I've never messed with either because I didn't want to break them until I could meet with up with someone who knew what they were doing to help me. I can't wait to get mine going now.

    Excellent info as always. I am tearing in to one of these now. Very helpful to see a complete tear down and rebuild. Thanks!!

    Great video , nice and clear information , good demonstration on disassembly cleaning and assembly . Love the Coleman stoves and lanterns , more the older ones . Built well easy to fix , and reliable . This is when Quality was important , today it is only profit sad to say . You see this in almost every product built today . I find it disappointing , people do not realize that is why these older things are still here and can and should be used .

    Cool! I purchased one back in November of 2021. I have not removed and cleaned the lantern yet. Mine does not have the original mica globe. Good to see you are still producing videos. Thank you! Eduardo

    Yes yes yes! Another episode! Thank you for posting. I have a slant similar to that and I love it. Bright, quiet, and the Mica globes…. I mean chimneys are cool.

    Thank you for this one. I have a slant that I picked up for next to nothing but it really needs some TLC. The fount is full of mud (this lantern and a few others I picked from the same guy had been in a flood) and needs a GOOD going through after seeing this video. But thanks to you, it isn't as intimidating as it was before.

    I just picked up a 1929 slant a week ago in Northern Ontario!

    Just finished one of these myself last week. I have the wrong vent on mine, replacement ball nut, and incorrect fuel cap but the rest is original and very nice. 1928 US made with a Q77 generator. A bit of a picky check valve in mine as well, but it is good enough for the functional test I put it through. It has a home on my desk next to my L427, and they wont be lit up much. I like them shiny.

    Great tutorial for the first time slant rebuilder. However you are missing the T-shirt plate that goes between the valve body and the retaining bolt. Also, the riser/nipple has a screen at the top where it mates with the rest of the burner assembly. It’s important to get those apart and clean that screen. Often it is black with gunk.
    BTW, that is a Coleman wide-reflector chimney from an early Air-O lantern model QL. Love the hiss of a well running slant!

      Thanks for the heads-up about that screen. At the time I made the video, a couple of pretty knowledgable collectors told me they thought the "T" plate might have been missing from some early Canadian models, so I proceeded without it. The collector who sold me the lantern saw the video and remembered that he still had the plate and has since mailed it to me.

    Very nice! When lighting and running do you just crack the valve or do you have to open it all the way to keep it running?

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman  Před rokem +1

      On an instant-lighting lantern like this, open the valve 1/4 turn to light. When the flame dies down the mantles are burning brightly, open the valve all the way.

  • @outdoorseyfun9842
    @outdoorseyfun9842 Před rokem

    Hello Bill I have a question on your l220 slant since this is a instant lighting Coleman lantern does it say that on the fount or does it still read quicklite?

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman  Před rokem +1

      Mine includes "Quicklite" in the stamping on the side of the fount. I believe these founts were shared with the 427s and were stamped accordingly. I don't know if that's common to all "slants". The instruction sheet that came with them, however, is for "Instant-Lite" lanterns.

    Good job! Thats a beautiful lantern! Where can i purchase a reproduction mica globe?

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman  Před 2 lety +1

      Old Coleman Parts sometimes has reproduction mica chimneys in stock, but it doesn't appear they do at present. There are two guys who make them for the collector community, but I probably shouldn't put their names in this forum. If you join one of the Coleman collector groups on Facebook or go to the Coleman Collectors Forum and search or ask, the folks there will give you the contact information you need.

    When you say Citric acid ,what do you mean ? where do you get it ?.some use vinegar . Thanks ,( Lemon Juice?)

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman  Před rokem +1

      White vinegar works too, although it's got an unpleasant smell. Lemon juice would work, but would be messy and sticky. I'm not sure what you mean asking what I mean. Citric acid is citric acid. I buy it in 2kg packages at a local beer- and wine-making shop.

      Can be found at WalMart in the canning supply section.

    It always scares me when youre washing small parts right over that insinkerator without any metal screen in it. One of those small parts goes down there and youre not going to be very happy

    • @king.coleman
      @king.coleman  Před 11 měsíci

      I've never dropped any small parts down there, but that's why I use that side of the sink. If I drop something down the other side it's gone or, if I'm lucky, maybe it's in the trap. If it falls into the garbage disposal I can easily get it back.
