1950s Sears J. C. Higgins Stove and Lantern Restoration: Part One
In this video I introduce a match lantern and stove set sold by Sears in the 1950s. They're from Sears' J. C. Higgins in-house sporting goods brand. Both are in very rough condition. In this video I give some of the history behind these models and then work through a full restoration of the stove. The lantern will follow in Part Two. The stove is a Sears model 710.74030 and the lantern is model 388.74001.

does the tip come off the generator of my AFC 1022? Thought I would ask before i get rough with it. I cannot blow through it and there is a hard black coating on the end. I do not see a hole. Thanks for any help.
All the AshFlash generators I've come across were brazed together and not designed to come apart.
@@king.coleman I had a sneaking suspicion that was the case. I am glad I asked. Thanks for taking the time to reply so promptly.
I have a 1022 with Success on the globe I am cleaning up that I had intended to list on feebay. I am leaning toward keeping it as my others are propane. This one had some fuel inside during storage and have not found good info as of yet on a "proper" way to clean the inside of the tank. I am going to rinse it with gas at the least until I decide if vinegar is a a bad idea. Has to be a very common issue and likely you may have covered it before. I will have to bing watch the rest of your videos! Great information and video this was. Any input on cleaning the tank would be appreciated.
I usually fill the fount with a hot citric acid mixture and let it sit overnight. White vinegar would work just as well. When a fount is really bad, I've been known to empty a can of carb cleaner into and let it sit for a few days.

Thank you. I love your videos, they've helped me alot.
I just aquired one of these. Well, i think mine is from 1938 so theirs no wind screens, and the pump is different, but she works really well...better than most of my 70s Coleman stoves...especially the auxiliary burner. Question for you...did the valves on these use any packing? I didnt see any in your video, but just curious. At first my knob that controls the air v. fuel flow was leaking, but managed that with a rubber washer. I know thats not the right solution, but it did work. Great job on the resto!😊
That was a great tutorial! Thanks!!
RE: burning indoors depends on your home, not the fact you are burning fuel. Many modern homes are very well sealed; therefore, burning anything indoors can produce an overabundance of CO. In older homes, you had enough drafts or other air ingress/egress that it wasn't really a concern.

I really enjoy your videos Bill, you have been a great help. I’ve recently acquired my first L427 Canada 10/26. After removing the pump and pump tube casing I cannot figure out how to get at the check valve in the bottom of the casing. I cannot find a video that addresses the problem. Do you have any experience with this issue? Any help will be greatly appreciated

Hey King, How 'bout something about Redi-lite, a AGM product in beautiful royal blue livery? Also, have never seen anyone do anything on Nulite?
@@user-mb6qc6iu3r AGM products don’t turn up very often in Canada. That said, while I was down at the ICCC convention I found what looks like an AGM 287, so I may be able to make a video on that.
@@king.coleman Thanks for response. How 'bout a video on a Nulite?
Excellent work
Going to rebuild one I just got this Sunday. Question do the vents always change color when they are burned.
@@TraceyAllen Yes, that’s normal.
I just got a 228D in pretty good condition. Someone at some point destroyed the wings to the check valve. What drastic measures should I try to remove it? It isn’t functional (check valve).
@@Bryan1Hersey An easy out is pretty much your only option at that point.
That’s been my problem painting on a metal table and plastic sheet. It would stick to it even though it felt dry to the touch. Now I leave it hanging on make shift washing line for at least 14hrs.
Smart man bill lol. It’s sunny and hot here in Scotland at the moment so my 413g is hanging on a make shift washing line 😅
Heh. The first time I used the oven my wife was pretty angry, so the next time I wanted to bake paint it was on a hot day and I decided to try baking them in the car as I left it sitting in the sun. It was about 150°F in the car and it worked pretty well...except fuzz from the velour seats ended up stuck on the stove wherever it was touching the seat. Oops.
How long do you leave your paint to dry. Do you put in an oven or air dry? Great videos to watch attention to details is great.
If I recall correctly, the Duplicolor has a 48 hour drying time. The high heat primer and high heat gloss black require oven curing. The parts that got the high heat paint were baked in the oven. I ended up curing the final coat of green paint in the oven as well so that I could more quickly get on with sanding and the clear coat. Ordinary spraypaint can be quickly cured in the oven at about 200-250° for 30. Of course, it needs to be dry enough to handle before you do that.
Thanks for the information bill, unfortunately Al need to air dry as my oven is way to small lol.
@@pauldeary That might be a blessing. A surefire way to raise the ire of your wife is baking paint in the kitchen oven. It smells awful and takes a while to clear out...and the oven usually smells like paint the first time you turn it on afterward. When possible, I tend to use our gas grill instead. I just have to be careful it does't flare up and scorch the paint.
I have watched many of your videos and found them extremely helpful in cleaning and restoring old colemans. Would there be anyway you could do a video on how to replace the mica pannels on the chimney. I have a couple that are decent shape but the mica is full of holes. Keep up the great work!
I'd like to. It's not something I've done to date.
Great video thanks
Hello. Thank you for the great video! I recently bought a 417B and am planning to take it apart and clean decades of grime. I noticed that the cast iron burner assembly has a gasket. Do you know if gaskets from the early 40s had asbestos?
Yes, the old gaskets are made of asbestos.
Kudos to you for leaving in the footage of chowdering that F/A tube up. It happens. And it's a real bummer when it does. I've worked on a ton of Coleman stoves and lanterns. I'm seriously considering screwing an old style valve into some of these schrader valve models. I'll take 1/4 turn to light over these any day.......haha!
I got one of these last year after I renewed we had one when I was a kid. I really like these stoves but the only thing I'm not a fan of is the flat base. Makes them a little unable when not on flat surfaces. I also hate to scratch the base up. I managed to find a TPU ring that fits over the base that protects it as well as providing a little grip. Well worth it.
Love this guy. One of the best performing single burners. Mine started acting up during winter camping so I think it's about time for a rebuild. Also from the island here, and I hate to say I've been using a really nice LED lantern lately for camping.. my red Coleman 80a had a NRV failure which is quite annoying
What is a 'NRV' failure?
@@mackbolan5126 non-return valve. It's in the very bottom of the pump tube and it takes a special tool to unscrew it.
What model is your lantern? I’ve never heard of a 80a. Do you mean 200a?
Great video, thanks. I have two of the 508's(looking for a 505) that use that same generator. Its a shame that it is so hard to find and so expensive when you do. Its a great stove with awesome adjustability.. From a low simmer to jet engine, lol...
Perfect timing, I just found a 576 on Friday at a garage sale.. it was rough but with a little work it cleaned up nicely, hello from west texas… thank you Sir.
Excellent video and restoration. In UK & Ireland these are seen as a bit exotic and complicated. A testament to your skills and knowledge that you got it working again. Generally in UK and Ireland the Tilley, bialaddin and vapalux are more common. I have one of these in fairly good condition except that the rapid heater keeps going out so I have to either do a soft start or hold a lighter to the rapid heater. I did try starting it with a lower pressure, to no avail. Thanks for sharing this restoration.
My check valve is leaking air but if i close the pump handle then the air keeps inside. Is it safe if a use it like that? I am not from usa and tried to remove the check valve with all king of tools except a proper tool but is so expensive for me since i am not from US. Thank you!
They don't always seal perfectly. If it seals completely with the air stem screwed down it'll be fine.
@@king.coleman Thank you! You saved my life 🤜🏻🤛🏻
You didn't mention anything about the fuel cap or the gasket required on it. Any comments? Is it some kind of rubber or lead?
Sorry for the oversight. The cap gasket is rubber and the size is unique to Akron. Old Coleman Parts sells replacements.
I see that you turn against the movable jaw when using an adjustable wrench. It's working for you, however ideally you would turn against the fixed jaw as it's stronger. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them. Great advice on protecting the brass parts.
How much time the burners works after the last 10-15 pumps with a full tank?
For most models 10-15 stroke of the pump isn't even enough for proper operation.
@@king.coleman How mucho time you can run the stove with a full tank and with the number of Stroke that you recommend?
@@Dionisio181 It varies widely depending on how you use the stove. A tank of fuel will last a lot longer if you're using one burner running at low heat than if you've got both burners running on high.
@@king.coleman Ok, i just want to know to calculate how much fuel i have to carry in an out door activity if i am running the stove with the 2 burners on in high.
@@Dionisio181 There's no simple answer to your question. It all depends on the model, tank size, and how you use the stove. Unless all you intend to do is boil pots of water, I doubt that you'll have both burners running consistently at full blast as that will just burn your food.
In the state of Victoria, Australia the residential building code used to mandate vents high up on the outside wall of each room. There were usually at least two depending on the room size. Apparently these were to allow for the use of kerosene appliances. After around the 1980s these vents were dropped from new buildings as being no longer necessary.
Thank you.
Nice complete rebuild. Just picked up a U.S. L228 slant (with the big hat). Helpful runthrough from breakdown and cleaning to light. Thanks for posting. In Maryland USA
Is carburator cleaner a no no with brass? Definitely a no no with asbestos, I would think. There is always vinegar and coke a cola with brass.
Carb cleaner is fine to use on brass. The active ingredient is methylene chloride, which won't harm brass. It's worth noting that a lot of carburetors include brass components. I usually use a citric acid solution (similar to white vinegar), but if the carbon is really tenacious and heating and quenching don't work, a soak in carb cleaner is a good option.
What if I don’t have that patina I just want the scratches out ? I just got a new nickle plated 1911 and I want it to look like a mirror
It depends on how badly the plating is scratched. Coleman never made a Model 1911 so I don't know what model you're referring to. You might want to watch my full video on polishing a nickel lantern fount.
Any idea where I can get my hands on a rebuild kit or something for the pump and check valve
No one has sold parts for these in decades. If I recall correctly, the pump leather is the same size as those used by Coleman and if the rubber pip is bad a new one can be easily cut from a piece of viton rubber of cork.
@king.coleman perfect thankyou for the info. Last thing I gotta try and find is a fuel cap gasket or something close
Nice fettling! Congratulations. Did you replace those two lead washers from the tank? (rapid and valve)
Yes. Everything came in the rebuild kit and was replaced.
I used to clean Tilley Lamp, generators with a chemical that I bought for dissolving rust on car parts, but I cannot remember the name of it. I'd soak them overnight, and they would be spotless by the morning.
Awesome stove, great job. Thanks for sharing
That is gorgeous. Awesome awesome Stove and awesome job!
For the gasket fire gasket cement or material modified will work
Nice job Bill, works great.
That reminds me of my Coleman I restored with the copper colored cylindrical tank. It is a very early Coleman. I used electrolysis for paint & rust removal before sanding and wire brushing. I had to get a big box of washing soda and used my 4 amp battery charger & prob. took nearly a week to do all the parts once I got it disassembled. I used a 10 gal. plastic kitchen trash can & filled it with 8 gal. water. I had a can of Coleman green auto paint given to me so I thinned it to go through my airbrush and painted it with my airbrush. I used a can of Rust-oleum copper color for the tank. I used a rattle can of high heat silver for the burner assembly. I even masked off the hinges on the wind screen & handle and painted them silver. I also used an etching primer. Cheers from eastern TN
Absolutely stunning restoration Bill! All the extra effort definitely paid off, It's beautiful❤
