    Thank you so much for all the pointers. I have been working on these lanterns since i was in the Boy Scouts in the early 70's . When one malfunctioned i would bring it home and my dad and i would fix it. He could fix anything and i picked up that Gene. Bought 3 at a yard sale not long ago but here is the jewel. 1965 220F which i kept for myself. Followed your directions and i have a brand new lantern. I fixed the other 2 and gave them to a good friend that helps me all the time.

    Had a Coleman back in the 60's while growing up and never gave it a thought to clean it. Bought a used 288 the other day that works great so thought I would get on ebay and buy 2 more, not 288's but others that may need cleaned up a little. After I get them I will fix whatever is wrong with them and clean them up a bit a re-sell them to get my money back from the 288.. Very informative video, this one and your other one, about how to take apart, what to clean parts and how to put back together. Didn't want to walk away without thanking you for your vids so thank you very much Sir. Take care..

    Great video series! Just cleaned and rebuilt a 220E with a stamped date of 11-52. Lit it up tonight in preparation for a trip out west this summer. Also have a 290A with a date of 5-91 that hasn't been cleaned. The knowledge Frank presents is golden and helped rejuvenate a 70 year old lantern. :-)

    Thanks Frank! Picked up a 220F built 8/71 at a Thrift Store for $10. Ventilator was pretty beat up, a little rust under the Base Rest and rust scattered here and there. Followed Part 1 & 2 of your nicely done videos. Got rid of the Mud Dauber nest, rust and tarnish, cleaned it all up, it's running great and looks pretty good. It's a seasoned veteran, with earned scars and good to go for many more years.

    Used Frank's suggestion to make a check valve extractor from a large flat edge screwdriver. I used an 8" squared shaft screwdriver and I cut the end off, ground it down and filed off the burrs. I had a replacement valve, so it was easy to determine the correct fit. My assistant held the fount with a deflated bicycle inner tube wrapped around it, and I turned the screwdriver with a vise grip clamped on to the screwdriver shaft. The check valve released with a pop. Thanks for your videos.

    Great vid. Today I dug into a 288 with a really rusty air pump tube. I began with a 13/16" drill bit, by hand to remove the heaviest rust. Then I took a half round file that fit into tube loosely and wrapped 320 grit emery paper around it so I could work it in and out and around and around to remove some more rust. Then I took a 1/2" emery paper drum on a mandrel with a Foredom flex shaft driven variable speed handpiece and worked it in and out and around. Looks decent but still pitted. This model has a rubber pump cup so I suspect it's less forgiving than the old leather ones. I oiled it up and it does pressurize as well as can be expected. I'm considering a thin film of grease in the tube and cup to get a little better seal so long as it dosen't gum up the check valve at the bottom. So to finally get to my question. When you send a lantern in the condition described back to Coleman for the $55 rebuild, what do they do about a severely rusted air pump tube? Just curious, thanks again.

    Thank you Frank for this great video. I will watch it again and part one. I have had several lanterns and stoves over the years that did not work right and wished I knew how to fix them. I had about 8 old ones get away from me in a move, I only hope the right guy got them and broght them back to life, I have a few more now and a couple stoves. I just got a 415D with the brass badge and I want to get that up and running but don't want to mess with it yet. I don't want to damage something. You are a good tech and teacher. I like the tribute at the end for Mr Coleman. I've often wondered who it was who invented this wonderful lantern. Like James Heddon he was a great American innovator. They are from the same era and probably used each others inventions. You asked your dog if he wanted to light the lantern. No. He wants to go swimming and fetching.

      Oh Mr. Heddon--absolutely! That is an awesome comment. I have decided that "someday" I will need more content that rebuilding Coleman lanterns, and one of my ideas was to go bass and pike fishing with only vintage lures, like the ones I used as a kid fishing with dad. Spring with the Heddon Vamp I remember like it was yesterday. I still have all of dad's lures. Each night (after a beer or 2) we'd stop at the bridge and he throw a "bat" Crazy Crawler out, and almost every time, pull in a bass. The name Heddon and Arbogast mean a great deal to me. Thank you for the comment!

    I have this exact lantern and in the assembly stage . Mine is not in as good a shape as yours. Who ever had it before me was real rough on the fount. It has no dents but the fount is really scratched and some chipping. The vent is in really good shape and polished up very nice. It's a 1951 228E and was covered with thick gunk and a little rust. Took a lot of cleaning. Can't wait to fire it up.

  • @Enjoymentboy
    @Enjoymentboy Před 2 lety

    Great rebuild series. Truly appreciated. There is something special about a gas lantern that just can't be replicated with LEDs and I love the idea that as long as I have fuel, a match and a thumb I can have light (and heat if needed). No need to ever hunt for batteries or a means to charge them. Sometimes old-school tech really is the best way to go.

    Just bought a 1966 220f for 40$. Video helped me replace the generator. Thank you! After watching a few videos and with my lantern success, I decided to purchase a 425 stove as well which looks new and only cost 45$. Great, cool stuff and at a great price! 😎

    Great job, very knowledgeable. I'm 41 and I remember the coleman lanterns from childhood camping trips. I am big into outdoors still (hence my channel) and just picked up my first coleman lantern at a garage sale for 20 bucks. 1972 black 228F and it didn't work at first but it's in great shape. I cleaned out the generator and it works! I also bought a new generator and will install that to see if I can get a brighter cleaner light. It's great as is though, but I heard that you should replace the generator. I didn't clean the brass and didn't even know it was brass until watching your videos. I might have to do that now. Great job man, fun videos to watch if you're into this stuff, which I totally am. New sub!

      Peter I hope you can find another one to replace your lost treasure. It was probably a model 275 that you sold...

    I really liked your video, Frank. You have given me a lot of confidence about cleaning up an auction find for a 1948 228D. The reassembly took the mystery away. LOL. Just need to get one of those bent wrenches for the frame nut. Subscribed for sure! 👍

    I like those shiny brass tubes. But even if you baby it and preheat startups, they still get black and scorch marks. Part of the game I guess. But they always shine back up. I rotate my collection of 30 or so quite often. Between running and working on them at home and my vacation house in Tennessee that I’ll rotate a few in and out. By the 3rd time I have stripped them down and cleaned everything, touch ups from the first cleaning. Vinegar, carb or parts cleaner (canned, high pressure helps), dry everything. Buffing compound and car wax work great on pained founts- but even on rusted ones where paint is missing. It will help fight the rust from coming back. Help not prevent- so keep them clean. Keep them burning.

    So, from what I can see, George Harrison has come back to life and is rebuilding old Coleman lanterns and stoves... :) Thanks for the instructions. I have somewheres around 25 old lanterns, and a few still will need some work. I've been too busy with motorcycle rebuilding, but I will start on the lanterns soon. I just did a stove yesterday. Your videos are great.

      Wayne, George Harrison has been accused of looking like me on many occasions. The longer my hair gets the worse it is for him so just wait for the new videos...! What kind of bikes are you rebuilding?

    I sent my Coleman 220J195 (made 5-77) back to Coleman and for $55 plus $20 shipping, they put in; a new check valve ,generator, 2 cap screen, and pump leather! Took a month and it works better than new.
