Thank you for this informative video. We got our AKK last week and we love him. He is supposed to be mini. We got him at exactly 8 weeks, went to the vet and had him checked out and he weighed 3.7 lbs. I am so glad I found this breed....

My partner and I adopted an 8 year old AKK who was surrendered at no fault of his own. I was skeptical of his breed till we did a DNA test. He is a little taller than your avg standard size and weighing in at 30 lbs.
Thank you! I've been wondering for a bit what point to measure the dog to determine what group they're in. Our little man, Kitsuko, is right about 13.5-14", so pretty solidly in the miniature category, and 12-13lbs
We had two brother/sister long coat litter mates the Grey/White brother was a standard, 17+/- lbs and the sister long coast Black/White was Toy/Mini right at 13inch and 9-12 lbs (she got heavier towards the end of her life as she was bloated with what vets thought might have been potentially leukemia.
Do the miniature howl like some huskys do?
Aurora is a mini and ahem on the hefty side. Not overweight but a dense dog at 9 kg. Eos is also a mini but around 6 kg. So a bit of a difference when one lives to lie on you and the other copies
I would go for the standard size, but then again i would rather want a Husky. But they are beautiful.

We have a klee Kia German Shepherd mix❤
so.....my Klee Kai is 4 months old. He is already 18 lbs (not fat at all) and about 15 inches at the very top of the shoulder, maybe just under. He already has that long leg look. He is from a registered set up puppies, so I know he should be pure klee kai. I am not concerned with breeding etc, so if he gets a bit over standard it is fine. I am just curious, do some grow/mature faster? How big have you seen on a Klee Kai?
Some will grow at a faster rate in the beginning and then slow down. I'm curious, what did your pup weigh at 8 weeks old?
@@Kikaskleekaihuskiesinminiature we didn't get him until almost 12weeks. At 12 he was about 14 lbs. Breeder said he had just finished a growth spurt.

I have one Toy, Apollo, and one Miniature, Skylab, Alaskan Klee Kai. Skylab is 15in" and weighs about 18lbs and Apollo is 12.5" and ranges between 10-14lbs. Apollo essentially has IBS for dogs and is currently on steroids as he starts losing weight rapidly otherwise sadly. So working with his vet to find what works best to maintain his weight and not see his ribs as he got down to 6lbs once which was not good. :'(
Do they shed a lot? Do they bark a lot? I'm planning on getting one but not sure about their shedding
@@bigshell33 They definitely shed a bit but mostly when they blow their coats twice a year; those are the times you'll really notice their fur on you but I always have lint rollers in case I need them. When it comes to barking; it depends on how you train them and their temperament. My older one doesn't really bark but my younger one is quite talkative but it's usually when they are playing or want something or happy I'm home or as I'm leaving and not taking them with(which they bark for about 10minutes after I leave and then settle down. I've got doggie cams to watch them and talk to them). They do bark when someone is at the door or if I'm walking at night and a person starts approaching us in the dark; definitely guard dog like in that regard. But it really depends on how early you train them and how you train them; plus temperament. It varies from dog to dog as they all have their own personalities. Though when talking to a breeder you could ask for a puppy that seems lazier and not as high energy but they can always change to from their puppy phase.

I bought my Alaskan Klee Kai at a store, how do I know if it's pure Alaskan Klee Kai? if it looks physically
Puddin is a miniature at 18#. Noodle is a smaller miniature at 14#
How soon can you tell what size category it will be?
We can not guarantee the size the pup will grow up to be, however we give our best estimate based on our 17 years of experience with the breed. We estimate their size at 4 weeks old

What size Klee Kai do you have?
The Alaskan Klee Kai I have a 3 and a half month old Klee Kai right now and she is a large toy to miniature and is currently around 7 pounds🐕 she’s also from your home. She was one is Dakota and Zeus pups
I have moose size. He's 24 inches and 40lbs lol and yes he's registered. I got him from Ms Bette ;)
Just some thoughts and I certainly don't have any answers, heck I've never even seen an AKK in the flesh but according to canine DNA testing companies like Embark there are at least 20 genes that code for size and they only test for 5 of them. The size of the dog is going to be the result of interactions between all 20. The amount of different size combinations that could come up is mind boggling; no wonder toy to toy can and does produce standards and that any size can show up in litters any time. In order to "set" a size you would have to breed within the size groups for quite a while and select for continued breeding just those who were the "correct" size. I think my biggest fear of breeding all sizes together is small females having trouble whelping larger puppies. I would imagine they have a much higher risk of complications.
I can almost always tell a toy sized AKK from a picture even before I read further and see that it is indeed a toy. To me they seem to have a shorter muzzle compared to the width of the head. a tad more puppy like in appearance even as an adult. I think my biggest fear if AKK ever did breed within size groups is that the smaller size itself may dictate structural changes, like the smaller muzzle I seem to see; and that concentrating one trait might also concentrate one you don't want. I know patellar luxation is common to all small breed dogs, so does being small also cause the groove that the patella sits in to become more shallow? I don't know. Has anybody studied if toy AKK suffer from that more than other sizes? Lots of questions.......
My klee Kai puppy is 2.89 kg and is 5.73 inches (he's a toy)

A little but don't think he will start shedding a lot till shes older she is very noisey

You don't say at what stage of puppyhood you realise what size puppy you have, whether standard, miniature or toy.
We have all three sizes and produce all sizes
