Scotty Kilmer thanks a ton the Amazon links made my life so much easier
Scotty Kilmer Scotty I'm having trouble getting the pressure hose to thread back into the rack it's a new one I bought because the old one was leaking but no matter how I try by hand I cannot get it to catch any tips on what I should do
Scotty Kilmer but what if the power steering fluids full? I get a groan and stiff turning when the car warms up i change the pump, belt and fluid and that did not help

I like all of your work. Some I already knew, your vids reinforced that. Always check you out when undertaking a task. Peace.
Why is it so hard to find honest mechanics like this guy.

You can find them, But they start at around 100.00 per hr.

Short, sweet, to the point, superb editing, great pace and no unecessary fluff or chatter...this was awesome.
Well i replaced a power steering hose on my 92 camaro and it still leaks, then watched this video as your my go to guide, heard that u said "power steering hoses can use up to 1500 pounds of torque" went back and tightened that hose even more, and sure enough ur videos helped another in need scotty, i had no idea the hose had to be so tight! thanks for all of your wisdom!!
He said the hydraulic pressure in the system could be up to 1500 pounds per square inch. 1500 pounds of torque would require a very long torque wrench or a mechanic named Chuck Norris.
From the Plews & Edelmann instruction sheet that came with my hoses: "Ford P/S hoses use a "swivel O-ring" fitting on the tube ends. When installed properly, these are designed to allow the steel tube to move freely in the fitting. The nuts should only be torqued to 10-20 ft.-lbs. NO TIGHTER."
I'll try this.
first, I would not use a rebuilt pump which is generally all auto zones sell. I only use brand new ones
Where did you buy your brand new pumps scotty? I bought mines from auto zone and it may not be a new one 😥
Should you always use brand new ones? Have you had many problems with used ones?
@@hakeemfb3 O'Reilly's sale brand new ones for my vehicle
You're my freaking favorite from the simple steps to the goofy intro to the thorough explanation I love you!
This is what a repair video should be. Clear & concise. Well done.
getting those lines off can be a cow. I use crow foot wrenches, and if that doesn't work, I cut em off with a hacksaw then a socket and wrench easily fits on, you're throwing the old hose away anyway
Holy crap Scotty I've been subscribed to you for a year now just because I liked your style, now that I needed help replacing my power steering hose on my E430 your video was the first that popped up haha. Thanks! you saved me $300
how much is the hose???
$300?! They want $800 to do mine! Must be that you're-a-chick-so-we-charge you-more phenomenon.
Like your videos. Straight to the point and short.
Scott, you have helped me so much over the last 5 years since finding you with all of your videos! Thank You!!!
Glad I found this video earlier today. I found out the hard way that you can't splice this hose. :/ What a mess. Well, that's one way to learn. When I heard you say '1500 lbs of pressure', I realized that there was no way splicing would work no matter how well it was clamped. Got my proper part and I'm all set to go in the morning. Thanks Scotty!
Whoa thanks so much for this! I was really struggling with the bottom bolt and thought I wouldn't be able to fix it, but then you cleverly suggested taking off the wheel. So much easier! Thanks again!
You have been pivotal for my DIY journey since you started your channel. I went from a nurse that relied on someone else to do the work to being self sufficient. You have a patreon or something that I can contribute to? It's the least I can do for the thousands you saved me by not only doing everything myself, but by doing it right the first time EVERY SINGLE TIME
It's often very hard to align those bolts, period. sometimes takes me hours, just the nature of the beast. Good Luck
I've had really good luck with AT 205 reseal for small leaks on those. But do put UV leak dye into the system, often the seals go bad on the stupid reservoirs where they snap in, check that first.
You have been turning me into a mercedes mechanic. Thanks for all the good information.

This guy has saved me so much money I love him.
Bless his soul for even taking time out your day to post helpful videos and all your videos you helped me which my mechanic couldn't smh.
Thank you scotty now i know what my issue is the power steering leak and bank 1 o2 sensor to switch out
Had this exact problem this week, sadly looked now on CZcams & this shows EXACTLY what I should have done. Now awaiting (dreading) the garage repair expense! ---- thanks
@fatbradlehs Tons of things can cause chirping and creaking. Check EVERY single rubber bushing on the suspension, and also check all the struts, the strut mounts, and the strut springs for that noise. If you spray WD 40 on a worn part, it may quiet down for a while. I use that for diagnostics all the time. Scotty Kilmer
Great video, it's awesome that you do all of this as a hobby and not as a service.
I have a 98 lexus es 300 and my powersteering high pressure hose has been leaking for quite a while. I've honestly just been pouring ATF through it for the longest time but the leak is obviously getting worse and I finally need to fix it. Is the process the same as in this video?
You're one of the few people who know how to teach others how do things.
I know exactly what to do just by watching this quick and easy video. thanks
you are just amazing. The shop that i went to, asked 250$ for labour, can't believe I almost got duped. Thanks Scotty appreciate it !
That's why I wear gloves, saves my hands. and I'd rather work with machines than people any day.
Yes indeed Scotty.😂

I love your energy, always had. Thanks for this helpful video. Godsend!
Scotty, great video as you always do! This one is even better as it's, short, sweet and simple.
That's what's up Scotty
Scotty after every sentence 😐
Love it, straight to the point, clear communication very helpful. Really appreciate your work. Subscribed! :)
you can cut either end off, but normally the bottom one is the hardest. Yours has a double nut set up and the bottom one is spinning, hook up something on there to keep it from moving.
my hose on my Oldsmobile alero is leaking where it connects to pump any suggestions
Outside of tightening, $5 of Power Steering leak fixer, power steering WITH "Stop Leak", or ultimately a new hose (usually not more than $100, mine is $20) and see if the threading on the pump is still any good. Unfortunately, if the threading on the pump is 'done for', you'll have to replace the whole pump which will be a bit more costly but around $100 for you to do it yourself
That was an impressive pour!@1:59
I drove my car today to my local auto repair,I didn't realize there was a leak until my car's steering wheel got stiffer and harder to turn.the good thing that I drove the car to the auto repair before the power steering system completely breaksdown.Thank You for this video Scotty.
you can get dexron anywhere, 4 works for 3 too. Or use power steering fluid, all stores sell that
Scotty, isn't power steering fluid just brake fluid?
+ktrez2000 Hell no! I knew someone who put brake fluid in his Lancia. He needed a new pump. You can mostly use ATF, but better check it before you put it in.
Depends on your car... Not brake fluid. My Toyota used automatic transmission fluid, my Honda uses Honda power steering fluid only. Check your users manual
i had a car that used 80w90 gear oil and previous owners had been putting in power steer fluid, probably dex III
ktrez2000 no, some vehicles use ATF. Check the owners manual.
My Corolla does not use Power Steering Fluid. Has to be Dextron Ii or III.
unghhh!
Thank you so much Mr. Kilmer; we are learning a lot from you. Priceless!
@BMLarson93 yes, they can be tightened up a little, they do have that adjusting nut on them. Just don't make it too tight or it will wear out faster.
Thank you for the videos Scotty! They have been a huge help to me.
Thanks Scotty! this video was really helpful for a first timer dealing with this issue.

Yeah, I bought an OK Cavalier and It needs work. I have a fender ready to be installed and a leaking power steering hose. With this video, I can do the job myself. Thanks man, I appreciate your work and demonstration. Saving money especially in hard times like these is a necessity.
Awesome video, short, to the point, and filled with information!
First time I saw a video was this one, you explain things very well and quickly, good job keep up the good work!
WOW this my favorite car video of all time lol my pressure line hose went bad in my E320 so I was looking for a video to help and not only was this enjoyable it was helpful
This video was really direct and descriptive. Nice video :D
the hose that comes from the power steering rack to the reservoir is the return line, you'd put that into a bucket and add fluid with a hose put back onto the reservoir there if flushing it while running
Scotty you’re a true hero your videos are appreciated
@X2N18 go ahead and change the gaskets and filter and be sure to put a little sealer on the gaskets before you install it. Scotty
just keep watching the ads, I get paid a nickel every time someone watches the ad. that keeps me happy. But, same process replacing the hose, it can be hard to get it off the pump but if you use a cheater bar and a long extension with socket, it will come loose
Thank you so much. I have watched your videos for years. And I really dont watch others. Your amazing
Thanks for the ups on that place. I'll try to grab a new one from the dealership. Your video was very informational and helpful. After taking my bad pump off, I was able to install the broken refurbished pump with minor confusion and take it off with no problem after it also leaked, except that tiny spot where there was one screw that took 10 minutes to take out. Thanks a lot. Now I know where to look when I have another car issue!!
Hey Scotty in some cases can we change just the o-ring that’s on the end of the hose?
Was gonna change the hose on my E430 and couldnt get to it. And found no videos or help to be able to reach it at the bottom. And then found this video. Life saver! :D
This is weird because I just fixed a power steering leak in my Merc ML430 yesterday, then I stumble on this when I am looking at Hand Warmer videos. I think I Googled "using ATF for power steering". So I assume the browser 'shaped' my suggested videos, but how the heck did it know I was also working on a Merc? Perhaps that part was just co-incidence. Anyway, I got lucky and it was just a loose clamp (brought the vehicle in from Japan and it turns out they were all loose), but in the meantime happy to have discovered this channel as a resource for solving my future problems.
Another great video, Scotty. Keep 'em coming!
Unfortunately, I hit a big roadblock doing this on my '95 Grand Am. It didn't have a banjo fitting going to the steering box. It had a flare nut, instead. After buying an 18mm flare nut wrench, I discovered that there isn't enough clearance around the nut for this wrench end to fit, which is a huge problem and an absurdly poor design by GM, in my opinion. So, you have to risk it with an open 18mm wrench, and hope you don't round it off. Well, the nut on my 20 year old car was seized on tight. After a prolonged attempt to get it off, I thought I finally felt it break free. But, it was just the flats rounding off. I couldn't believe it. Total disaster.
The nut is so close to the engine compartment that I doubt it could be socketed, even if I cut the steel line.
What a mess.
Good luck to everyone
damn bro.
Excellent and informative!
You have a knack for the dramatic... lol Great videos!
Scotty is the man.
Ur a good man Scottie a good man, ty for upload.
Nobody does videos like you thank you for your videos keep them coming
Scotty, first of all I want to thank you for your fantastic and easy-to-understand videos!
Second, I wonder if the car and/or the power steering pump may be damaged from removing one of the hoses in the system, WITHOUT installing a new one? I've got a leak on my '97 VW Polo, and replacing them is too expensive for me at the moment.
@Matthew55904 All power steering systems have reservoirs, some are built into the pump itself, and some are remotely located with a hose that goes to the pump from the reservoir. Just look closer or go to any auto parts store and they can show you. The H AC line is the high line, you want the low pressure line, it's always the thicker line and it goes between the compressor and the evaporator at the firewall. Scotty Kilmer
If a joint seal is split, it needs replacing. AT 205 can work in power steering leaks, but realize they have 1600 psi and that's a lot of pressure to seal. Valve cover gaskets need replacing, no sealer will fix a leaking oil gasket, only a leaking oil seal. Intake manifold gasket leaks need replacing if they leak oil, but you can use bars alumiseal in the radiator if it leaks coolant there at the intake
You just saved my a lot of money. I appreciate your help!
depends what's leaking, but really, you replace whatever is leaking out fast, such as the hose , pump or steering rack
Hi Scotty,
As one videographer mechanic to another, I will tell you that I like your style. Great energy and easy to see what you are referring to.
So, I had this unlocated leak in my E320's power steering for a few months and I was trying to get it to just magically stop with Lucas Power Steering stop leak. They make good stuff, but let me tell you that Mercerdes does NOT like it at all. Steering is hard as rock to turn until car warms up now. I have to break it down and find the source
Scotty, I love you videos.
Thanks Scotty ! I have the same exact car and same exact PS leak location in the high pressure hose. I am about to replace the hose. Good tip on getting at the bottom end from the side through the fender well. Just saved me some head scratching !!! Outstanding. I did notice that you were putting standard PS fluid in this Mercedes. I bought some of that high priced Pentosin for my job, Should I take it back?
yes, fix them youself, but the rear main oil seal requires removing the transmission to get to it. Try some AT 205 reseal liquid in the engine oil for that, hard to find, amazon sells it
@MrLALO805 If you're talking about your drive shaft, either grease is coming out of it and it needs new joints, OR the transmission seal is leaking from the transmission and then dripping over the drive shaft. Scotty Kilmer
@rg10969 generally they only suck air from a leaking hose or pump seal. Try to figure out which one is leaking first, using UV leak dye. Scotty
Thank you Scotty...very helpful!!
Thank you!!! Your videos are ACE!!!
@scottykilmer I managed to get that flare nut most of the way in. I had to get some rubber dish washing gloves to tighten it by hand. Steel part of the pressure line has to intertwine with other parts of the line to keep them in place. Thanks again!
your a lifesaver scotty
You're the man Scotty!
Great Job! Scotty....I enjoy your Videos very much :)
You make it look so easy! Thanks
You’re a legend. Thanks for helping!!
Thanks for the post
@PureShotGolf Yes, same basic process, only the location of the hold down bolts differ. Scotty
Thank you. I'll see what I can find. Do you have any advice about using stop leak additives?
@rclark23 Of course you can replace leaking o rings, but normally it's the hose itself that gets pourous and leaks out fluid. That's why you use UV dye to see exactly where the leak is coming from. Scotty
Thanks I needed this video. A mechanic said I need a steering rack but hopefully I just need a hose replacement.
Thanks Scotty!!
Hi Scotty I really enjoy watching your videos, and I was curious if you could put the name of the tools in your videos, maybe in the description or somewhere. I don't have that pressurized drill; I was wondering what tools are necessary and which ones you can choose not to buy.
@dexdrums In most cases they just work fine doing the processes in the video of turning the wheels to get the fluid flowing. Scotty
Another great video. Thanks.
Great video for the MB, I'm replacing my steering pressure hose on my 98 BMW e38, I have the hose off but can't get the New one on, do you have a EZ way of doing this?
@naylornation It the power steering high pressure hose. And all cars are pretty much the same, only the location of the hoses changes. Scotty
great video awesome friend thanks for sharing about how to replace the hose on the return line in conjunction with a power steering fluid leak ...
