LIFTED SUBARU CROSSTREK DYNO NUMBERS? STOCK TIRES VS MUD TERRAINS

  • In todays video we take Thomas' 2018 Subaru Crosstrek and put it on the dyno in stock form. Then we put his larger off road tire setup on the car to see just how much wheel horsepower and torque is loss from adding 11.6Lbs per wheel of unsprung weight. This video is a prime example of why light weight wheels can make a huge difference in a cars performance.

      hey -- I see you all the time on 680. I'm in the blue Alltrack with the massive Thule and Rossi (Valentino) stickers. Chipped and a bunch of other "sleeper" goodies. I was going to go the lifted route, but recently have been leaning towards a Golf R setup. Anyway -- small world seeing your video on Jalopnik as I've seen you now a bunch and even got pictures of your car last year when it was just lifted w/the Method wheels, looked like you all were having a Subie GTG at the burger joint in downtown WC. I was eyeing the Method wheels and either redrilling them or doing wobbles, especially after seeing your car in person -- they just look soooooo good. But again, now I'm not sure if I'm going to go UP....or DOWN. :D

    • @break_it_bill
      @break_it_bill Před 6 lety

      I'm heading from WC to Pittsburg on my commute, so where I'm seeing you might not be precisely on 680 (I also just moved here in Oct. '17, so I'm learning where things start/stop and names in general...ha)...but yes, it could be a totally random coincidence that someone else has a white Crosstrek lifted on Method's. Have you recently added a front brushbar and rear 5th wheel holder with a swingout on it? Because I just saw *that* one within the last week on the same stretch of road. (might be the 242 heading towards 4).

      S3....niiiiiice. If I could get a wagon of any of the fun stuff in the VAG world I would've gone that route. Golf R Estate, any of the S/RS line w/Audi with a long roof would be ideal. Almost went Allroad but even it was a tad too "proper" for our liking. Traded in our Golf R for the Alltrack when we were prepping to move out here as we needed a little more room for the drive (VA to CA). Kept our R32 and had it trailered out so we still at least have that to have fun in. My buddies back in VA have everything from BT VR6 MKIII Cabrio's to bagged SQ5's, '18 RS3, Golf Rallye, Bynum VR6T GTI, Jetta Coupe VR6T, etc etc etc etc etc -- Roanoke, VA to Richmond, VA VW/Audi crew really don't fuck around. :) I'm not from there (from NY) and have lived all over the place (TX, ID, Italy) and it was nice to find a group of enthusiasts take it seriously and not just do "scene" bullshit.

      Its too high fo sti it unless you want to pay 45k for a crosstrek. That would be an expensive suspension and brake setup just to help with the 300hp. You cant just upgrade the engine and call it a day. It would ride terrible. It would essentially be a complete overhaul and very expensive. I could see it if they did a sti forester as well but just for the crosstrek it is not profitable. The performance variants of subarus never really sold, just look at the legacy gt, 3.6r and the forester xt. Gone just to replace it with underpowered fuel efficient engines. Plus cafe standards would not make it happen. With all of subarus cars being awd except the brz, their mpgs are average at best. You have to have models above average to have others that are below average in mpg and lets be honest a 300hp crosstrek is only going to get 20mpg at best

    2019: Late reply = Your CVT can hold up to 250hp before the belt slips and the transaxle bents, so you can push 220hp safely up into the engine with a 10psi turbo kit and it will work no problems, also its recommended to add an external larger CVT Tranny Fluid Cooler or a transmission cooler for shorts, it will prevent damage to the cvt while pushing more hp.
    We did it twice so far, added a 10psi boost to a 09 lancer gts cvt and went from 160hp to 235, and added a 8psi boost to an altima cvt going from 180 to 220hp. No problems so far, CVT are great transmissions but automakers decided to cramp them with small coolers to save weight and costs, also subaru makes one of the best cvts in the market paired with their transfer awd cases that are awesome. Definitely worth doing a turbo instead of a supercharger on the 2.0 cause its more fuel efficient and delivers without parasitic loads on the engine!

      It looks like you're right. The TR580 transmission rated at 580 Nm can hold probably a 206 lb-ft torque rating from the engine before blowing, assuming the stock 2.07x torque converter multiple.
      The TR690 can hold about 280 lb-ft back. Assuming a stock torque converter multiple of 1.8x.

    • @user-wv9mr2nh8h
      @user-wv9mr2nh8h Před 4 lety

      This car can be pretty quick. It is highly restricted, in terms of airflow, from the factory to achieve better fuel economy. Significantly increase the air flow and it'll go much better.
      The best cold air intake is the stock design; just put a K&N panel air filter on for better flow. You can also get a high flow UEL and front cat pipe from AVOTURBOWORLD. Also get a custom, straight through 2.5" catback with high flow mufflers.
      A custom dyno tune with a piggyback ECU will also give you a bit more power. Regardless, our MAF sensors will tune the AFR by itself when you add the parts on.
      Do this and it will be as quick as a MK5/MK6 GTI; for good comparison.

      Not really, beside turbo and internals you have exhaust and intake, which is minimal and not needed. If you have a manual you can put the short shifter of a 2015+wrx in it. Not the one from cobb though, the billetworkz one works. The mounting isn't the same. There is the pedal commander that changes the accelerator response which is much needed. Haven't personally used it, and it's expensive and i assume the reviews are just placebos for people who want to assure themselves that it's doing something. But yeah other than turbo there isn't much you can do without tearing the engine apart.

    I think a 215/75/r15 KO2 would have verry little impact considering the 15" wheel is lighter than the stock 18". Problem here is that 235 are 36 lbs whereas 215 are 32 lbs, also given the higher dimension of the wheel, the extra weight has more impact since the position vector is longer (torque = force * position vector). An r17 or r18 Blizzak is about 30lbs so stock size KO2's should have little impact.

      I am just guessing, but I am thinking the computer when it is new, is programmed to help protect the engine til the break in period is over, or it learns from how you drive it. When I first got it you had to push down the throttle quite far before you started to feel any difference in acceleration. After I reached over 800 miles on the engine, it started becoming quite responsive. From about 1000 miles to the 10000 it has on it now, I get immediate response, and it can get quite peppy when you floor it. I have the cvt model. Not wrx power, but all the power I need, and I have raced autocross for the last 38 years, who likes to drive it like I stole it, once in a while. With a combination of mostly highway, sedate, driving but some city, boisterous on ramp, truck, traffic, and uphill passing, I am getting an average of 31 miles per gallon, calculated.

      My 2016 feels like the throttle mapping is set high when you first press the throttle.
