  • This medieval carol is here given a spirited rendition by the Choir of Clare College Cambridge. In Daryl Runswick's arrangement, under Geoffrey Simon's direction, the choir is accompanied by a small cello ensemble, a descant recorder and a medieval tabor (drum). The word "arrangement" should be emphasized, as this version is not intended to represent how this piece was played and sung all those centuries ago! I've been fluent in "real" classical latin for 59 years - but every performance I have ever heard of this little thing by anybody has used the same pronunciation as Steeleye Span - including Cambridge's Claire College Choir waxing Gregorian! So that's how i perform it! Lord and the souls of the original Gregorians know how this was originally pronounced. Almost certainly NOT in Julius Caesar's or even Constantine's Latin! Lighten UP, classicist zealots! This song is gorgeous! Enjoy! or quietly steal away!

@@AMG-kw7kt - I don't think either version (this or Steeleye Span's) could be considered authentic. But we'll never know for sure HOW it was actually sung in medieval times. It was probably performed as a 'Gregorian' style chant. Interestingly, celebratory chants and such were, in earlier times, generally performed in a minor key. Whereas nowadays we associate a minor key with sadness, not celebration.
Think 'A Coventry Carol' for instance. Nowadays it's always arranged in the minor key. But that was probably not the case in Tudor times.

Ilya Yolla Well met! Nice to meet a fellow Orthodox, I have been studying the Church Fathers and saints and every day I learn more about how we are the true Church. I am an American though and do you think I should try living in Russia one day? Things are becoming very perverted and decayed in my country....I know Russia has problems too but all the Western countries like mine seem to be getting more anti-Christian. :(

The churches would have 10x the seats filled if they still had music like this. Thanks, Victorians, for making it all so solemn and ponderous and dull. Clothing was better in Mediaeval times too (thanks again, Beau Brummel).

    Gaudete, gaudete! Christus est natus
    Ex Maria virgine: Gaudete!
Tempus adest gratiae, Hoc quod optabamus
    Carmina laetitiae Devote redamus.
Deus homo factus est Natura mirante,
Mundus renovatus est A Christo regnante.
    Ezecheelis porta clausa per transitur
Unde Lux est orta Salus invenitur.
Ergo nostra contio psallat iam in lustro,
    Benedicat Domino salus Regi nostro.
