  • How To Use A Puppet To Teach Classroom Rules
Using puppets to teach classroom rules can help your students engage, remember and follow directions. Using a puppet is a simple and effective tool especially when you use it to teach (and reteach) classroom rules.
Today we say hello to Max again. If you didn’t catch him in his first video on using puppets in your virtual classroom here’s the link:
My favorite tip from this video is to place the puppet on a shelf and tell the students that the puppet is watching for kids who know the rules. Those kids are earning praise and rewards for the class. You will see your students glancing up at the puppet to see if the puppet has noticed their efforts.
Lots more tips and how-tos for using puppets.
Here’s some key points in the video:
Thanks for watching. If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up.

I was in the classroom for 25 years also. I used puppets of all kinds. People and animal puppets. People puppets were all races of girls and boys. We did puppets shows after lunch for reinforcements for reading. Children with reading problems could choose a partner. We did plays. Half the class was the audience and the other half were in play. We usually did 2 short plays. The plays were about good habits or Aesop stories. Some days we repeated the play because they enjoyed them so much. Everyone wanted to take part. White kids would pick black puppets sometimes and black kids would pick white puppets. Boys would pick girl puppets and boys would pick girl puppets. It was always a choose of their own. Reading got better and also confidence. I enjoyed it as much as they did. I am retired now. I use the puppets with my grandchildren sometimes. Puppets are great teachers.

Great tribute to the power of puppets. They really are an amazing and oftentimes over looked tool. Thanks for watching.

Great video! I'm entering college for elementary school teaching soon and enjoy puppeteering a lot - so I was looking for ways to combine the two in the future!! TYSM ❤

I’m glad to help. I try to share the little things they don’t teach in school that help each day go smoothly. You will do great.

  • @DawnGinese-TheSingingNurse

Ms Angie, you outdid(is that a real compound word?) yourself! I loved how you demonstrated using Max by teaching us through him. And your kid impersonations were perfect! Love it! Did I ever tell you, you are awesome? :)

    Nice tips! Thank you!
Do you use Max just for rules ?

Max came out during special occasions. Usually with rules or when I had to introduce or tighten up a routine. I always wanted him to be a novelty so he would get the attention of the kids. Good question.

Where did you buy Max? I love him! I’m not seeing quality hand puppets that I like when I search online. 😢

Sorry I replied to this but it didn’t go through… I’ll try it again.
I got Max in a curriculum sample box about 20 years ago. I’ve looked for others like max and couldn’t find them. It was from Harcourt publishing if that helps you at all. I agree puppets suitable for an elementary classroom are hard to find. I found a pretty cute alpaca puppet from Folkmanis puppets. I’ve searched for good puppets and this seems to be a pretty good place.

@@TeachersMakingTheBasicsFun I ended up finding a “Max” on EBay and snapped him up. Apparently he’s McGraw Hill brand and called Happy the Dog (for anyone else who would like to know). He’s just a perfectly sweet and non-terrifying puppet that I just had to find one for my 1st graders. 😂 Thank you so much for the wonderful video and the information so that I could find one! ❤

Yahoo. I’m so glad you found him. Wow. He is super hard to find. McGraw Hill- yep now that you say it, it makes sense. Your students are going to love him. He’s the best.
