- The Control gamemode (also known as King of the Hill) has a unique trait that allows overtime to be triggered differently than other gamemodes.

Former overwatch league player and streamer super (supertf) has an entire video on his channel dedicated to him being very confused about this mechanic. Would be funny if he saw this, great vid.
Ah this one XD almost 30 mins of stream watching matthew complaining and trying with chat
@@fernald2201 yeah and he ended up gifting 100 subs or somthing cause he lost a bet
I don't think it was this mechanic. The overtime triggered in his case based not on the last 3 seconds, but based on the last 3 seconds of the counter (even if that team's counter had been paused due to the other team capturing it before). That seems like a separate mechanic that needs its own video.

I actually completely forgor but yeah, KOTH is just weird💀
i was about to say, we finally know why it happened
You're like the shounic of Overwatch, deep analysis and amazing, descriptive visuals, love it!
THATS who he reminded me of, was trying to find that channel!! thx
if you or anyone else reading this is looking for more videos like this i recommend asumsaus (for stuff on smash bros melee) and limitbreakers (for dark souls). theyre both high quality with lots of information and unique editing
@@xobler2508 i love all 4 of these people and im very surprised to see them all mentioned
Loved the visuals in this video - keep up the good work!
its also the only timer that counts up instead of down, and if you are using a floor that makes a big difference
This is good OW content. These kind of videos feel like shounic TF2 vids and I love it
Just got recommended your vids, they're so good! The editing is amazing. Keep up the great work 👍
Can you please do a video on why so many matches in OW seem to flip at 99% when the losing team manages to retake the point to force the game longer? I suspect there is a hidden mechanic to allow games to flip faster for "closer" matches, however a buddy of mine insists it is human psychology - players don't give 100% of their effort until the last moments of the match. You are the first youtuber I've come across that I would trust to be able to research and present this clearly.
Thanks!
There is a similar phenomenon in TF2 known as the "pub-push", where the attacking team comes together for one final (and usually successful) push during overtime. I do believe the psychology of "now or never" plays a role, but OW does have a mechanic where respawn times are increased during overtime. It's the main reason you see so many full-map payload pushes in competitive mode -- the longer overtime is active, the longer the defender's respawns are (up to a maximum of 15-18 seconds). I may do a respawn video at some point, there are a few of these invisible mechanics.
Marblr’s response is true but id like to add something else. When your attacking a point when the other team is 99% people r more willing to throw a ton of últs because it’s now or never. On the flip side, more high level teams will purposely lose the point on 99% by allowing the other team to use últs and not matching them. They will then go for the retake since now they have the ult advantage and have a better chance of winning
Love nerdy stuff like this! Keep 'em coming
Really hight quality content youve got there
your videos deserve more attention great work ✨
Great vid!
In all honesty, part of me really wishes the percent was replaced by a "time left" countdown so we knew exactly how much time we had left to contest. But I suspect Team 4 might've tried a time-based countdown and found it confusing for new players.
The overtime song got me anxious through the entire video
well it makes sense. at the end of overtime one team has to win. would overtime start at 100% that team would technically have completed the objective of getting the point to 100% eventhough overtime has started, so they should win. in that scenario if the other team would capture and hold the point in overtime and reach 100% themselves both teams would have 100% in that instance and neither deerves to win more than the other. making it start at 99% ensures that whichever team wins in the end does so, because the capture point reached 100%.
What about the bug where it will sometimes just round down from 0.5 straight to 0 and you don’t get 0.5 seconds of time that you should get to touch the point? I’ve seen video of this occurring on Anubis but I don’t know if it’s 2CP specific or not. Informative video!
Edit: it is NOT 2CP specific! It happened to the Dallas Fuel on Gibraltar and they would have touched the cart if not for the bug
By any chance do you have a link? I really like this topic and would love to see it.
@@andrewclastic2835 I’ll try to find it but the Reddit post was from months ago so it’ll be hard.
Actually, it also happens on hybrid maps. Such as Kings Row. I checked replay, slowed it down, and can confirm that the game will automatically end, assuming no one touched in the last three seconds, at 0.5 seconds. To be fair, .5 seconds really isn’t a whole lot to make a big deal out of, but it’s still .5 seconds someone could’ve touched the point in.
@@dovjih .5 in this game can feel like a LONG time
I think that it wasn't 0.5, but 0.3
I've definitely noticed something different through out the years but I never thought it was this.
Man,Im binging your videos.Good work! What editing software do you use? The animations are clean and nice
your videos that're like these remind me alot of someone who does something very similar (but for team fortress 2!!!) shounic. (compliment btw because i LOVE this kind of content)
Loved the video. I have had multiple games that ended when the timer got to 0.5s instead of 0. Do you know why this may be?
The Overtime Mystery Solved
I expect great things for your channel dude. But you gotta tell me how you get your sick visuals, like for your d.va video, with the heroes cropped into a new background
Huh I didn’t realize that, thanks that was really well explained
SUPER NEEDS TO SEE THIS
"Its not a bug, its a feature"

At one time a few years ago I heard there was a bug where the team who doesn't have control of the point can't contest the point during overtime during some cases if a player from the team that controls the point leaves the point at the same time it's contested. Is that still a thing?
_Overtime! Overtime! OVERTI--_ wait, wrong game.
so, if I step on a control point on a hybrid map when there are 3 seconds left, and then immediately leave the point, will it still go to overtime because it checks the last 3 seconds? Or does it do an additional check to see if it is no longer contested in that time?
Informative =D
My sister recently triggered a second overtime in a control match. She touched the point in a window between overtime expiring, and the counter hitting 100% which reinstated overtime, played the Athena voice line again, and refreshed the shortening timer. It was weird. We still lost
I'm so proud of knowing this before watching this video :D
we need super to see this, although it's kind of late
You're the Akshon Esports of Overwatch Mechanics
I like how he says "exactly". Really puts an emphasis on the 't' every time.
When this channel blows up I get to say I was here before it.
Works well!! DANKEEE
Theory. Payload was made first to program the overtime mechanic so it activates at 100% capture progress. However the hud on control shows the % to the player, and activating overtime when the enemy percentage is at 100% feels wrong, because 100% should mean they have fully captured it. Thus they had to bump the overtime trigger down to 99% in order to avoid this awkward data showing up to the player
Doesn't sound like a bug to me, seems very intentional especially by the way you explained. Never noticed this before tbh!
Your editing style is so familiar, have you done similar work before?
I had a hanamura match where the attacking team got 100% on capture of the final point, and didn't win.
How do you think that could be?
did the internal counter say 99.99 and round up to 100?
I remember super had a video on this and he was going insane
I just want to know if its smart to keep the time running even if it's just one person making it to the point to keep the overtime going.
I'd say yes, always contest if you can. Contesting turns a definite loss into a probable win, so you might as well touch
There seems to be a special interaction when a capture point is captured around that 3s period in overtime (happens when a capping starts at 75% after being contested) , then the Overtime continues for the other team. Can you confirm this?
I've noticed this as well.
When overwatch 2 comes out, could you check if it's still working the same?
supertf is malding
Can't tell me this is not Surefour on a new channel
You should do this sort of content on other games too; it’s really good
So depending on how fast overtime runs out it could be better if the enemy team captures the point while you have 95% instead of 97%.
Why?
Roadhog hook in depth please
How's about when I'm clearly on the point, full on, feet to ground and it doesn't give overtime. Because that has happened to me more than enough times for it to not be a coincidence.

@@spacewargamer4181 Don't you patronize me, I saw that. It doesn't answer the question. I am on point, timer is ABOUT to hit the threshold, not hitting it, and yet I am not considered on the point. Or while IN overtime I am on the point while there is time left in the gauge.
These have happened to a friend of mine and myself too.
heya, just wanted to ask if its okay for you if i turn your thumbnail into a 7tv emote?:)
why would this be an oversight or a bug?
This is so confusing I didn’t understand anything
Or maybe im just sleepy
is this the reason that if you touch after 99% it doesn't trigger the overtime?
someone summarise this plz thanks alot
Did they changed this in ow2? Overtime on control doesn't activate unless is 99% vs 99%
strategy guide
Honestly, knowing Overwatch, I wouldn't be even slightly surprised if something in the code freaks out if the check is done later, and rather than fix whatever it is that freaks out, they just decided that this was good enough. Now, it's buried under so much more spaghetti code that it'd be impossible to fix.
(Remember kids: this is why you plan for the future when programming.)
Honestly
That rounding down does not matter _that_ much
I have a question, is overtime infinite or it has a limit? I mean, can you stay in overtime infinitely?
to my knowledge, it is "infinite" in the context of a regular match; but server instances will shut down if they have been running for too long, so it's possible that a game in overtime for several hours will just shut down.
Has this changed in OW2?
This guy sound exactly like shounic from tf2
real
if you seen any pro matches, lots of players do this. it's not a bug. it's part of the game.
Okay so here is something that happens in almost ever king of the hill map if you capture first can get to 99% without the other team taking control of the point if they are at 0% they get a damage boost and almost always get the point
This seems intentional, no? I feel it would be silly if overtime happened at 100%. If your team was in the lead, but the attacking team secures the point during overtime, your team might be at 100% but the match would still be ongoing, which doesn't seem intuitive. Overtime happening at 99% ensures whichever team secures the point is the only one with 100%, leaving the other team at 99% or
Damn I play video games to avoid math not do it
