I left Brazil when I was 20 years of age, growing up there fighting in vale tudo was absolutely brutal, we used to gather to fight, bjj guys against other styles of martial arts fighters. Gyms against other gyms just for the sake of fighting, yes some of us got hurt pretty bad, broken bones, twisted ukles, body articulating limbs broken, it was hell on earth, sometimes I wonder what on earth I was thinking but been an young lad I didn't care, I could literally face any man on earth, got knocked the fuck out a few times, but I lust blood and loved the desperation on my opponents face. I'm so happy and thank God I've made alive out of all that. People don't know but those crazy fights back home in Brazil during the 80s and 90s made of many people call today UFC. For all of those unknown fighters that help to creat the concept of the UFC I salute you.

This is why old-timey boxing was so different. 19th century boxing was a mostly bare-knuckled affair, and fighters predominantly targeted the body. And without the gloves shelling up was basically worthless. Fighters relied more on parries and binds to defend. Old boxing also had a more predominant wrestling element to it, in a lot of ways it was closer to MMA than the modern sport.
Technically its not bare handed because they still wrap their wrists which tigtens the ligaments and joints which reduces the risk of bone or joint breaking. So there is still some protection from the wraps.
i believe that fighters in combat sports today are like modern gladiators, and personally, I do think that there should be a fighting promotion that is like that, no gloves, no time limit, no rules, because we need more modern gladiators.
Venues have to be rented out and it would cost the UFC more to be in them. Then it probably would be harder to put them on tv when each event would last a drastically different amount of time for airing. Another thing to consider is the fact grapplers and bjj guys would stall out their opponent making strikers suffer.
I would argue that getting punched in the face by a none gloved fist doesn't hurt not it definitely does more damage, and I would say getting punched with a gloved fist hurts more but does less damage to your face. 🙏💯
I feel like one of the reason they added gloves and time limits was to legitimize the sport. Back in the 90s MMA was seen as something brutal and even barbaric, and the addition of gloves and time limits make it feel more ‘humane’ and more of an actual sport, rather than a freak show as it was seen back then. The illusion of safety and legitimacy in most combat sports (at least to the general public) is completely maintained by the existence of such rules.
Those gloves allow you to be way too lenient with the punches you throw. Without gloves, it's much more risky. You gotta practise enough to land out perfectly or else your own hand breaks
