I know. I remember watching this movie for the first time when I bought a copy of it and I had to pause it a few times because I couldn't take how freaking beautiful these two were.
Gosh can they get any more Beautiful!! Sheesh! Paul and his piercing blue eyes and Elizabeth just a gorgeous with her violet gem eyes! Love this movie! Saw it on AMC years ago!
nononononnono ive read the play five times over, and each time the thought of brook's version makes me cry a thousand gallons of salty salty tears because its such a radical change from the book. and yeah i get it blah blah the transition from literature into movies always means each adaption will have its own unique interpretation but godfuck it brick is not this way in william's original text
they knew 1950's movie audiences would not accept two gay football players , New York stage audiences would. I believe they got Tennessee to write the movie version and clean it up a little, have Maggie and Skipper have an affair so Brick would hate her.
Liz is both stunning and spectacular in this movie. Just a complete and total joy to watch. Her voice so cool and confident, yet overflowing with emotion and longing. This scene is one of the greatest. Full of tension, waiting to be released. Steam building. Movie art at its finest. Thank you, Liz!
You rarely have this in films. When Elizabeth is speaking your eyes stays on her, when Paul speaks your eyes goes towards him. These two great actors went head to head in this film and neither outshined the other. Paul was always critically acclaimed as an actor but Elizabeth was always having to prove herself due to her scandalous private life and her beauty. She deserved more credit as an actor.
This is my all time favourite movie...by two of my favourite actors...RIP Elizabeth Taylor who passed away today...true movie legend none of todays actors or actresses have this kind of screen presence or chemistry or acting abilitiy!
I want to go through the rest of my life with a piano playing in the background. Well, actually I would like a quartet. The victory of a cat on a hot tin roof is just staying on. Long as she can. Meow.
Lana Parrilla who plays the Evil Queen on Once Upon A Time said she'd love to play Maggie on Stage; ugh I wish she had the opportunity she is such an amazing actress!
Paul Newman was so good in this. I really think its one of his very best. Newman is interesting even when he is not speaking. And Williams wrote such good dialogue. Williams always said this was his favorite play.
I think we are losing something with each generation. Some firmness, strength or thickness. I do not know how to say it properly. But a guy like Paul Newman has something about him that for example Ryan Gosling or DiCaprio do not have. He is not as polished, or physically weak or something. And Elizabeth Taylor is just gorgeous. Like really, your jaw drops when you look at her. Charlize Theron and Angelina Jolie are great for our generation in their own right, but they too seem to be missing something Taylor has. And Taylor and Newman looked like this in an age when plastic surgery was not as common as it is today. We are getting weaker and weaker, because our lives are becoming more and more comfortable or something like that.
I somewhat agree with you, but its also all about perception. its easy to look at classic film through rose colored glasses. I personally think this generation's actors have an astounding eye for work involving idiosyncratic mannerisms, and facial work. That being said people like Newman, Brando, Peck, and Redford have a kind of raw charisma and presences that can't and hasn't been replicated to this day. I really think the difference lies in the evolution of the art form. older movies, this movie in particular, tend to be replicating a more theatrical style.
Interesting about the evolution of movies. In that time, movies were much more about story and character development with long scenes of people talking. Much closer to the age of live theater where props were just that - something in the background to prop up or support the main action. Now props have morphed into CG which has taken over dialogue and plot. Well, welcome to the 21st century. I think we have gained in slam dunk value but lost something in the translation.
Movies were about props all the time. Studios always wanted to deliver huge spectacles to viewers, no matter the time period. Ben Hur, King Kong, Cleopatra, Towering Inferno, etc. It is just that in 1958, they had less tools at their disposal so they were forced to be more creative. And one movie like Cat on a hot tin roof is not representative of the entire era. There are a lot of great movies coming out today that are about story and character, you just have to look. The volume of movies coming out is bigger of course and the amount of crap is therefore bigger as well, but lets not idealize the past too much. It was always about money and big attractions for the public.
I guess you're right, but I do feel like I used to enjoy movies much more years ago. Now I feel lucky if I can find one or two a year that are worth watching. Maybe we were more unsophisticated and innocent back then, and easily impressed, or maybe I'm just getting old and not moving on with the times.
jerramy Yup. Its getting older. Thats all. When younger, you were more easily impressed. Older, you have seen a lot of movies and a lot of crap. I recently watched the new Ninja Turtles. I thought it was crap and that the old movies were better. Then I watched one of the old movies here and thought: "Damn, this is even worse than the new one." Nostalgia clouds rational thinking. If you wanna see a good new movie though, I suggest Nice guys with Gosling and Crowe. A good film.
Brick: Win what? What is the victory of a cat on a hot tin roof? Maggie the Cat :Just stayin on it I guess, as long as she can . Tennessee Williams was a remarkable writer!!
At one point the full movie was here. I usually catch it somewhere on a Cable or Network channel. I'm going to buy the DVD, I must. I can watch it over and over, the performances are so great. With Ms. Taylor passing, she is the last of the original cast. If anyone can find the book, it's really worth the read. Surprisingly there is more to Big Daddy than meets the .eye and how he came about that Plantation. Tennessee Williams was genius, I loved his hot smoky plays...
That's such a great movie, one of the bests in the story of cinema. Everybody should see this film and appreciate it, because it's a masterpiece. This is ART. This is CINEMA. This is DRAMA. This is sooo good !
Everyone always says that Elizabeth Taylor was the most beautiful woman of all time. I had only seen her in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" -- and I thought they were nuts! I watched this and immediately changed my mind! She's gorgeous. So jealous.
+Vette gaddia I've read that hert striking double eyelashes was a symptom of a serious heart defect. I think I'd rather be average and healthy than beautiful and sickly to be honest.
+Addy C: She lived to be nearly 79 though, not bad. I know she was in poor health for the last few years, but her star shone so brightly, it dazzled. She did have a great life when young.
The film was originally supposed to be black and white, but they decided to change it to color because of Paul Newman's and Liz Taylor's stunningly gorgeous eyes.
Doesn't Get Better than those 2 playing those parts, maybe , in the Street Car Named Desire, both films , Just Phenomenal , all the Leads Beyond Captivating .
the MOST BEAUTIFUL ICONIC LEGEND WHO MEANT SOOOO VERY MUCH TO US ALL BELONGS TO HEAVEN HEY HONEY MIKE TOOD & RICHARD HAVE HAD ENOUGH WAITING WE MUST NOT BE SELFISH RIP BLESSINGS & PRAYERS TO HER FAMILY
because if he were uglier then she could be less in love with him. he looks the same if not better as he did when he was younger and she can't stand it because it won't allow her to hate him or take a lover. she's still tied to him through her love and sexual attraction which makes his rejections that much more painful
Scarlett Johansson is going to play Maggie in a Broadway revival this Winter. Poor Scartlett. This is Tennessee Williams, not a comic book. And Scarlett is not Liz Taylor.
"I must admit the character "Lou Ann" in my new book "The Howling In The Rockies" was inspired by Elizabeth Taylor as "Maggie" from Tennessee Williams' "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof". She was just my kind of "Hot"! Jesse Hickok, Author
+varigdc10 The best movie Elizabeth ever made was "Cat on a Hot tin roof", the movie here. They gave Elizabeth the oscar for "Butterfield 8" to make up for the one she should have gotten for "Cat on a hot tin roof".
Vette gaddia I always liked B8 better, but, Cat was also a great flick, so how about saying both efforts were just "great", how about " Whose Afraid of Virginia Wolf" ?
varigdc10 You know, I know many ppl love Virginia Wolf. And she deserved the Oscar for the role. But it's not a movie that I can watch many, many times like "Cat on a Hot tin roof". Take a look at Elizabeth's eyes in Cat! That movie capture Elizabeth's and Paul's gorgeous eyes better than any of their movies.
In case you didn't know, Newman had an "affair" with James Dean (and others.) What a hunk. There are plenty of very hot guys out there with talent but this one got ....HOLLYWIERD backing.
Just goes to show you what a great actor Paul Newman was, he did that scene without once drooling at Liz in that gorgeous outfit. I know I'd need a mop to clean up the drool if it was me. Rest in Peace Liz and Paul.
This was the year (50's), Elizabeth Taylor was very popular and well known as the most beautiful woman in the world. Men and women adored her in her prime....
Wow! I'm a freshman in HS and I wanted to do this scene for theater class...but it's not even in the play! I think it's amazing how they exude so much emotion in this scene....guess I'm going to have to pick another monologue maybe from Who afraid of Virigna Woolf, another classic!
I know. I remember watching this movie for the first time when I bought a copy of it and I had to pause it a few times because I couldn't take how freaking beautiful these two were.
Wow
these two are just way too beautiful to be on screen together. I feel like my computer is going to explode
2:32
God. He was so fucking goodlooking, even when he got old.
One of the handsomest man I've ever seen in American Cinema.
Gosh can they get any more Beautiful!! Sheesh! Paul and his piercing blue eyes and Elizabeth just a gorgeous with her violet gem eyes! Love this movie! Saw it on AMC years ago!
***** lol girl!! Great taste!
+NellyBelle What about Big Daddy? What about Big Daddy's piercing blue eyes? Or Big Daddy's violet gem eyes?
pix046
His eyes too!! Hmmmm! lol
There you are again! lol This youtube universe is way too small. I expected to see you on one of my favorite songs :)
Longster86 lol This my movie right here!!
She plays this so well and b/c of her beauty it makes it even more heartbreaking. Such horrible times in her life during this filming also.
No, they don't have stars like this anymore. Just ridiculously gorgeous...the both of them.
The ending makes me cheer EVERY SINGLE TIME LIKE GAHHDAMMN GEDDIT MAGGIE GEDDDIITTTT
best internet comment ever. you get a gold star.
nononononnono ive read the play five times over, and each time the thought of brook's version makes me cry a thousand gallons of salty salty tears because its such a radical change from the book. and yeah i get it blah blah the transition from literature into movies always means each adaption will have its own unique interpretation but godfuck it brick is not this way in william's original text

@@johnwalters978 A year late but Tennessee despised this movie and had nothing to do with it outside of publicly deriding it. It was the Hayes Codes.
@@ahriax7521 no way I didn't know there was a book, I gotsta read that!!
Maggie: I get so lonely
Brick: Everybody gets that
you think he gets lonely and feels thawway as well? missess her...
I feel you, Maggie. He is damn gorgeous.
Liz is both stunning and spectacular in this movie. Just a complete and total joy to watch. Her voice so cool and confident, yet overflowing with emotion and longing. This scene is one of the greatest. Full of tension, waiting to be released. Steam building. Movie art at its finest. Thank you, Liz!
can you imagine if liz and paul would've had a baby, what eyes and looks would've he/she had? amazing
Oh my god
R.I.P to two of the greatest to ever do it....
You rarely have this in films. When Elizabeth is speaking your eyes stays on her, when Paul speaks your eyes goes towards him. Paul was always critically acclaimed as an actor but Elizabeth was always having to prove herself due to her scandalous private life and her beauty. She deserved more credit as an actor.
Paul Newman played the role of Brick in this film perfectly and when I read the play that was just how I imagined him!
RIP Paul Newman!
This is my all time favourite movie...by two of my favourite actors...RIP Elizabeth Taylor who passed away today...true movie legend none of todays actors or actresses have this kind of screen presence or chemistry or acting abilitiy!
My favourite movie of hers ... Goodnight Maggie, rest in peace.
fantastic, the gestures and chemistry of the actors, their facial expressions and movements, is all perfectly expressed.
C'est un excellent film d'une pièce de théâtre de Tennessee Williams, Les acteurs sont excellents merci
Liz Taylor is an incredible actor Newman is left behind in his scene.
I think they are both on par. That's what makes the movie great, their dynamic.
One of the greatest actresses of all time
SMITHERS! SMITHERS!
Beautiful people.
This is one of the best plays by Tennesse Williams. I love it when I first saw it and still do when I get a chance
I want to go through the rest of my life with a piano playing in the background. Well, actually I would like a quartet.
The victory of a cat on a hot tin roof is just staying on. Long as she can. Meow.
Her laugh at the beginning is so infectious.
"no-neck monsters" is my favorite line from ms. liz, rip darling, you are so missed!
Lana Parrilla who plays the Evil Queen on Once Upon A Time said she'd love to play Maggie on Stage; ugh I wish she had the opportunity she is such an amazing actress!
Oooh my gosh theyre the most beautiful couple ive ever seeb!
They were so beautiful.
"Take a lover!" That must've been a scandalous line to hear in a movie theatre in 1958!!
Paul Newman was so good in this. I really think its one of his very best. Newman is interesting even when he is not speaking. And Williams wrote such good dialogue. Williams always said this was his favorite play.

More and more comfort and convenience=more and more laziness and indifference
love your comment

+Addy Norman She's even more beautiful in "A date with Judy", "The last time I saw Paris", and "A Place in the Sun".
+Vette gaddia I've read that hert striking double eyelashes was a symptom of a serious heart defect. I think I'd rather be average and healthy than beautiful and sickly to be honest.

So sophisticated in Ash Wednesday !
Thank you so much for posting this :)
I will be using this for my acting class!!!
No movies are based on these kinds of dramas anymore...a study of human emotion that takes place in a day!
Brangelina who? This is the most stunning on screen couple I have ever laid eyes on! They were both GORGEOUS!!
You leave Mr Burns out of this!!!

Pure class, life in a movie.
Damn, it's wrong to be that beautiful. And I'm not just talking about Elizabeth.
the musical theme that start at 2:06 is beautiful! love this movie
because if he were uglier then she could be less in love with him. he looks the same if not better as he did when he was younger and she can't stand it because it won't allow her to hate him or take a lover. she's still tied to him through her love and sexual attraction which makes his rejections that much more painful
*sigh* so much talent Liz. We are at a loss.
he is so GORGEOUS!!!!! RIP
Scarlett Johansson is going to play Maggie in a Broadway revival this Winter. Poor Scartlett. This is Tennessee Williams, not a comic book. And Scarlett is not Liz Taylor.
Happy Birthday Elizabeth! You were good!

Newman was GORGEOUS!!!
He can't lose his looks because he's a vampire and they don't age.

My favorite performance of hers
taylor and newman both were intelligent and soulful people -- they grew up in a less crass world
This was a great movie, also I like Butterfield 8, that in my opinion was the best movie Liz ever made.

RAW TALENT
There's more to this play than the lead actors' looks
Now this is an Oscar Performance!!! None of that were everyone thinks they deserve an Oscar!!!
Love this movie seen it so many times
Great movie.

Damn. Can’t decide which one’s the hotter one
I love this movie.
This was the year (50's), Elizabeth Taylor was very popular and well known as the most beautiful woman in the world. Men and women adored her in her prime....
such decency in hollywood....wow

I love the music playing throughout this scene and throughout the film. I don’t know the name of it
RIP Maggie. We'll miss you!
