Ian and Asa discuss the day’s political stories, including former Post Office boss Paula Vennells giving evidence to the Horizon IT inquiry.
Ms Vennells broke down in tears twice as she was grilled about why she had told MPs that the Post Office had been successful in every case against subpostmasters.

Of course she knew. The Post Office hired Second Sight to investigate and when Second Sight reported Horizon flaws to the P.O. they were sacked by the P.O.. Angela Van Den Bogerd who has already testified said as soon as she knew anything she would immediately make sure that Pauls Vennells knew too.

Going forward the CEO must have ultimate criminal liability for the actions of anyone in the company that causes the company to break the law. Additionally the limited company is a legal entity and must finance any damages resulting from its or its executives or employees or sub contractors criminal actions. If no individuals within a company can be identified as jointly or severally responsible for the company's illegal actions then the CEO of the company must be equally liable for the result of the company's actions as if they had personally committed those illegal actions. The law requires a change.

No tears when she accepted the bonus paid from the innocent sub postmasters own money.
No tears even when she did find out about the horizon bug.
No tears when she practiced her faith.
No tears when told people had taken their own lives, she even ordered an investigation into their mental health and family.
Only tears when they get caught it seems.

After all, as none of her 'people' ever told her anything, she had to find some means of passing all those long, tedious, days in the plush office, sitting in a comfy chair behind a large, elegant, desk.

She got big jobs because she is a consummate and competent internal politician. If ever there was evidence that competence does not relate to character, this is it. The flaw is, although she was highly competent in manipulation and internal politics, big politics caught her out.

If she actually was employed in the higher stratum of corporate business for a major company for over 5 years...and never knew the PO prosecuted totally with its very own legal team without plod involvement that is just frankly unbelievable.
Apart from the armed forces and possibly religious orders, I cannot think of any other organization that assumes the role of investigator, judge and jury before hauling victims in to secular jurisdiction...presumably because they had not built their own prisons yet?
Incompetency and utter disinterest beyond the bonus and personal comfort of a CEO that so obviously should never have been in spitting distance of the power to ruin peoples lives.

She can still be hauled into court. It’s up to a jury to decide whether her evidence is false. There is a mountain of evidence to suggest it is false. I doubt the authorities will make the attempt, it would probably be down to JFSA to bring a private prosecution against her.
There are moments where her flashes of anger are barely, but quickly, suppressed. Noticeably when the gallery dares to gasp at her clear nonsense.
There was a beautiful moment when she was spouting her belief that the Post Office “IS” a part of the community and “IS” a wonderful organisation etc. In the background you can just hear Jason Beer say “WAS”. She actually acknowledges it with a cynical nod.
A cunning and ruthless individual, perfect for the clergy.

This may be a first in this extremely sad scenario. Watching Paula Vennells give evidence on her first day to the Horizon enquiry, I actually believe we should consider the strong possibility of her suffering from 'Anosognosia'. It's a neurological condition, more often attributed to someone who has had a stroke. However, whichever way, questions are put to her about her responsibility in all of this tragedy, she has a genuine blind spot as to her own culpability! Like someone who suffers amnesia after an accident, I believe her loss of memory and genuine inability to recall her own responsibility is down to a genuine neurological condition. I really don't believe she is an all out vindictive person. I do think, during the course of events, she discovered she was out of her depth and panicked. Should this enquiry go to a trial in court, I do think a Psychiatric evaluation might reveal she is sadly, more mentally disturbed than this enquiry might reveal, based simply on her gross naivety and incapacity to handle such a huge crisis. I think, fearing for her position and the huge consequences of her lack of leadership, she became so confused, there is nothing she can honestly say in her defence.
Were this to go to a court of law and a Psychiatric evaluation reveals a hypervigilant narcissism, her accusers may need to reconsider, how much she deserves to be pilloried. Understandably, there is a huge amount of anger, especially from the victims. However, rather than directing that anger to the one person, who may genuinely have a personality disorder, that forbids her to see her own wrong doing in this, there are many other players in this, who seemingly suffer from selective amnesia and should be held to account. In particular, those inspectors who bullied the Postmasters into agreements that saw them in courts and in some case, imprisoned.
It seems to me there is currently a distinct evil phase going on in the world. Everyone, especially the Media Monster, is looking to blame someone, anyone, for the World's ills. No matter the rights and wrongs of this tragic case, let us not lose sight of the fact that Paula Vennells is still a human being. She may be a very ill human being but still a living breathing human being, who, at this moment must feel like the most hated person in the world and to add to the tragedy, she doesn't understand why!

This is all very well but the fact remains that she was paid significantly with bonuses and had considerable power for several years and evidence shows she lied to parliament and did everything to protect the PO Brand to the detriment is Sub POs. The bigger issue here that Corporations will always protect themselves at the detriment to the individuals. Paula should not escape being held accountable but unfortunately due to the way that the system works in the Uk I don’t think anyone will be held accountable.

Unlawful influence of an MP - I can't understand why the media aren't covering the Mark Davies (Communications Officer, ex employee of Jack Straw, then Straw's wife Alice Perkins who sat on the Board of the Post Office). An e mail was shown to Davies whilst he gave evidence, smugly telling Paula Vennells and the rest, that he knew the Labour MP on the committee and would have a word with him before the Committee, intimating Davies might persuade him to not to press certain issues.

Psychopaths are very cunning and crafty. Paula Vennells knows exactly what she's doing, using manipulation and deflecting responsibility off herself and rather unto others. Every move is calculated, planned, manipulated, and controlled. You see her doing this over and over again in the Inquiry. She's a master chess player in this exercise. Let's hope Sir Wyn will checkmate her.

Crocodile tears? No. I think the tears were genuine. Why was she crying? I think she was finally overwhelmed by the situation. This is not to defend her actions or lack of action. But she is being grilled and humiliated in the full glare of national publicity. She has been the focus of press attention for a long time. Yes yes all of her own making but we all have our breaking point. I think she reached hers during the inquiry. Unless she is a total monster along the lines of Myra Hindley (and I do not believe that) I think she also has personal regrets for the terrible suffering that the subpostmasters have undergone. Her actions and inactions can be explained as a combination of self-interest and incompetence. Once you make a decision to lie, one lie follows another and it becomes hard if not impossible to back out. Whatever. But I'm perfectly sure the tears were genuine.
