QOTD: what is one thing you've done recently (big or small) to be less reliant on the food system?

I started going to local farmers markets! A simple step to much better healthy food. In addition, people happily share info about growing food. Good place to feel connected with down-to-earth people.

I just found you and will be binge watching! I've never used a pressure canner, it makes me nervous, I do water bath canning and dehydrate, but not pressure! I might get one soon and try it! I got 5 chicks last spring, I have 4 hens and a rooster, no longer have the rooster he got real mean! Debating on weather or not to get more this spring!

We've become less reliant on the system by storing fuel to cook our saved food and heat our stored water.

I really enjoy your calming, relaxing vibe, it allows me to listen intently to what your teaching without feeling the panic and anxiety of all we need to have done yesterday. I know the urgency we are in, im a single parent and was raised by a single parent, preparing is genetically embedded in my DNA. I leave your videos clear headed, relaxed, enriched, confident and ready. Thank you

I, too, find your relaxing, soothing approach very peaceful. In the past 2 months I have stocked our basement with 300 pounds of various grain berries. I have ordered a grain mill, but I am awaiting its delivery due to being on backorder. Sprouting and drying my grains while I wait to bake good for us bread has become my joy. I plan to learn to can as my first goal of 2023. Thank you for your encouragement!

Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. We purchased some packaged "meal" items from a "Patriot" group. Basically MRE's. I've been decluttering and reading up on Caning and freezing home goods. We've got meat in our freezer but I want to can some of it as you did the venison. I'm also re-preparing our garden site for fresh vegetables and We were gifted containers for gardening too. I'm wanting to have salad greens and herbs in some of the containers in our back porch.
Slow but steady I want to protect us from toxins and what ever may come to pass with potentially more "food shortage".
I really appreciate your doing these videos and a passing on old knowledge.
Blessings and Love from our home to yours. 🙏❤🙏

A couple of the things that I did to become less reliant on grocery stores and systems is that I now Buy nearly all food and ingredients from local farms, I've been learning how to can, and I bought dozens of packets of seeds so I can grow my own garden next year

Just found you as I'm learning to waterglass eggs from our hens. The most recent thing we've done to prepare ourselves, is set a date for our cow to be processed. Love the layout of your videos, and the calming nature of your voice. Makes it very easy to learn, while doing household chores 💞

We love your videoes. Very relaxing to watch. My son , who is a graphic designer, was very impressed by your cinematography. I have been canning since 1974 and we can or freeze most of our fruits and veggies. Also make soups, jellies, jams, stews, canned meats ( chinese garlic beef comes out great. So does pulled pork in BBQ sauce.),sauerkraut. We also make our own wine. I love watching these videoes because only my daughter has these same interests.

Thank you for the reminder to always be prepared. We stocked our pantries and freezers with meats, flours, sugars and everyday items.
We bought our non gmo seeds back in December. I'm hoping this year gives us a good yield from our garden so we can start canning our vegetables. Love your channel, well done.

I hit the bell! 🔔 I realized that I didn’t get notified because it was on ‘personalized’ instead of ‘all.’ Fixed it!
Our step toward self reliance this year has been starting into shepherding, extending the garden (although you know its sad, dry story 😢) and growing a much larger flock of chickens than we’ve ever had previously. This winter, we’ve eaten exclusively our own chicken meat & stored veggies/fruits until now, when I am starting to buy again. I can’t wait for the next growing season!! 😃

Hello Sierra, great video ! I have seen veggies canned and meat canned but never both together. Seems like a Great way to do it ! each jar is a meal basically ! I can do this with beef tips as well, which inspires me to do this say once a month and then i am at least accomplishing something towards my long term food storage goals ! Thanks

We replanted wild ones from woods on our property (and blackberries) on a sunny slope last summer and got A LOT. The slope is steep and we need the roots, so we didn't mind the speed at which they spread but these could take over. Enjoy. Raspberry raisins were good.

I would love to see more videos on this topic. I was wondering if the taste of the potatoes changes when it's cooked this way and stored. We have been avoiding potatoes for this reason, but I've never tried this method.
