Giving my 18 year old cat Garfield "elderly care", so he doesn't become a "Smelly Cat"

- Yes I know it doesn't belong here on this beading channel, but I always wanted to do this video and I have no place else to put it really... And so many people don't know how to take care of their old (smelly) cats, so I figured I better do one before I loose him and it's too late. Plus there are so many "OMG CUTEEEE KITTENNNNN" vids out there already I figured at least one should be out on elderly cats and how to keep them shiy and purring and happy... :-) Know anyone who has a smelly cat... I suggest you share ;-) Maybe we can make this one go viral for a change instead of the "OMGGGGGG SOOOO CUTEEE" kittens vids out there :-) And don't worry I won't make a habit of it putting up Garfield video's :-)
FAQ:
#1 Is Garfield still alive?
No he is not guys.., this video was uploaded September 2013. It was made right before his last check up. The Vet told me it was time. I agreed, and so did my usband.(Thank God) I made an appointment for Garfield to pass at home with the
vet. So about 3 days later she came by. He went out with a purrrrr petted by both me and my husband till his very last heartbeat.
#2 What soap are you using? Regular unscented hand soap. Something known here in the Netherlands as "UniCura". It's old fashioned green soap I bet my great grandmother used washing the clothes with before there were washing machines.
#3 Do you know soap is bad when they lick it off? Yes I know, the "licking" part is called "Grooming". Garfield completely stopped grooming.
#4 Why are you cleaning his butt first and use the same cloth?
Actually this is just a quick instruction video on what I did for Garfield. I didn't really clean his butt, neither was there poop at the time in his basket. If you watch carefully when I " clean his but" there is no poop stain on the cloth, also just to be on the save side I do clean the rag again 3 minutes in the video (in case your attention span didn't make it that far) just
to be on the save side. I mean from that angle I can't even see what's going on behind there... :-)
#5 Why am I getting this in my feed, I don't even like cats?
Can't tell, if you are a Christian, ask God, if you are not... ask CZcams :-)
#6 Why am I crying (I don't even like cats)?
Probably cause you were feeling the love and my pain as I knew I wouldn't have him much longer, you are still human although you might not like cats. :-)
#7 How come this video is now going viral since it's more than 3.5 years old?
I don't know, again you would have to ask God, I think he would probably say "Cause now you can handle the thumbs downs and nasty remarks without breaking out in tears" :-)And if you would ask CZcams the answer would probably be "Someone posted it on Reddit and it skyrocketed from there".#8 Could Garfield still walk?Yes he could if he couldn't he would have been put to sleep already. Compare your pet to a human, would you like to be bedridden? I wouldn't want to be... But as long as I can still get around I would like another day filled with love on this earth if possible. #8 Could he still walk around?Yes he could. If not he would have already been put to sleep. I wouldn't want to live out my days being bedridden, so I wouldn't let it happen to him.
#8 Can you tell me more about Garfield?
Yes I can, he walked in when he was about 6 years old (vet had to estimate) I had to put my previous cat to sleep about 3 months earlier due to having cancer. :-( She was only 8. In the old days her and me would lay on the couch to watch
television and Garfield would be sitting on my shed looking in the window as if he was thinking "Wish that was me there all snuggled up to that human" :-)About 3 months after Quincy (my previous cat) passed he walked in. I just didn't have it in me to remove Quincy's scratch pole. So he climbed up and went to sleep on it. After he was done sleeping he would leave
again. He continued this ritual for about 3 days, sleep at our home and go home afterwards. After about 3 days he decided to stay the night with us. After 3 days of him staying with us I went to the neighbor and told her Garfield was with us. She didn't mind. She said she found him hidden in the shed so she took him in and since she already had 2 cats, 3 dogs, 2 kids and her and hubby she didn't mind at all. She did mention he didn't do his no 1 and 2 on the litter. Yeah I noticed so after the first day I went to the pet store and got 2 sprays. One that said " don't here" the other sprayed in the litter box as saying " do it here" :-) Instant fix btw. As we were talking Garfield came outside to see what was going on, as she bend over to give him a pet he ran off back in to the house... Neighbor was a little offended, she said he acted like he was abused... LOL I thought it was hilarious. Cat obviously was afraid she might take him back with her again. He got better again with her later on when he knew he didn't have to worry :-) Now however we had a mystery on our hands... where did Garfield come from, what was his real name? We wouldn't find out until he was at least 13. I went to visit my best friend and I got to talking to her mom. Turned out when she went on vacation she brought her two cats over to be baby sited by the one who was house sitting for my friend. One escaped. Although there was a long search for him he never did get
found. She mentioned it was an orange cat that did his business all over the house. Guess who? :-) So I went to go get him and showed him to her, and she said Yup that's him :-) Well needles to say I could tell her he's having a great live at our place and he passed with all the love we had to give them.
#9 To the remarks I have been reading about people thinking the will go insane when they loose their cats: Trust me, when it's time you will be at peace with it way more than you think you will be now. Why? I lost two pets pre-mature, it was so very painful I don't even want to think about it. But with Garfield there was peace in my heart. yes it was hard, but him having had long life it was much easier as a sudden passing. On top of that, about 2 days after he passed. ...No wait let me start at the beginning with that. Garfield was a naughty cat, he would always, and I mean ALWAYS jump on the kitchen counter. I really didn't like him doing that so I always shoed him off at least a gazillion times. After a while he caught on so I could hear, as I walked downstairs, a " thumb" of him jumping down the counter. I must have heard
it another gazillion times. I got this innocent face every time of course as her pretended it wasn't him I heard. So about 3 days after he passed I walked down the stairs still only half awake and I heard this very familiar " thumb" as I heard so many times before. And it took me about 3 seconds to remember he wasn't there anymore... Or was he? Several incidents have happened to let me know he was still around. Garfield laid in his basket across the fridge. I could always see his reflection in it when I opened the door. After he passed about a week later I actually saw his reflection in his basket. I looked over my shoulder expecting to see him in his chair..., of course he wasn't there... Just saying, might be mind tricks, might be he was still there, but I don't care, those moments made me smile and helped with the grief. So if anything like that ever happened to you, nope you are not crazy... :-)
B4Pbakup God bless you for taking care of God's creature until the very end.
In my home it's " Till death do us part" :-) That includes my husband, and he's very happy about that LOL
B4Pbakup I shed some tears. I don't have cats or dogs or any pets. I guess I'm still human after all.
Garfield was a very lucky cat. Ive placed and re-homed and fostered out and granted adoption to quite a few cats in my career and its simply SO hard for them to not choose their own home, their own people, their own daily routine and life. They're just not made to learn how to get used to circumstances they don't choose. I recently lost a cat of my own. She went to live with my neighbour. As Im a pro I knew better than to try and force her to stay with me. So I handed over her papers to the neighbour and told them to come see me "on the house" when she needed vaccines and check ups. She's now a very happy cat with a family of 2 parents, 3 kids and a husky, where she herself decides which of their beds she wants to sleep in every night.
Oh gosh im sooo sorry im in pure tears Cats are my life. hope you are okay
No wonder he was 18, you take great care of him
TheCelticTiger32 he still alive
Martin Rodriguez wouldn't think so
TheCelticTiger32 my cat was 22 years old. he can be lucky
TheCelticTiger32 the oldest cat is 31
My grandad's cat just recently passed at the age of 21...I'm not even 21.
definitely the sweetest video iv seen on CZcams
+sarah thank you :-)
You are a loving cat "mommie"...I happened to be a nurse, so I would like to make a few suggestions? I buy "dry" shampoo from a Pet store, and leaves a nice scent. I too, would wash my elderly cats...Niles was 19 and passed a few years ago, and my current cat Daphne, will be 19 in June....So, my suggestions for bathing is: I take a warm clean cloth with baby soap (I use the Lavender one), and wash the face area, mouth, ears, inside ears, then I take a couple of Q-Trips, gentle clean inside of ears. Next, I spray a dry shampoo all over the body, gently with a clean, damp cloth, rub it in and it drys, leaving a nice scent. Lastly, I rinse the cloth I have been using, add a little bit more of the baby soap to clean anal area, gently clean the anal sacs without rubbing to hard (this area can get crusty and usually this is one of a cats stinky spots). Finally, I rinse and repeat with the baby soap and clean all four paws (this is another stinky area on an elderly cat). This can occur if the cat box isn't clean, or, if the have a hard time getting into the box. When my cats start to have problems with balance or their ages, I originally made a "handicapped box" with the front and part of the sides cut out, for easy access. This certainly cuts down on the "poop" or embedded cat litter in the crevices), all my cats love when I tickle the inside of their paws, they immediately spread them
Sarah agree
Dan Browne
STFU
Dan Browne You're so right !
He's looking around like, "wow, you are really the best, you know that, right?"
Tacos Unfolded looks like he's smiling too💕
You still have cat?
This woman is an angel... she cares for this sweet cat....
My thoughts too. Ur a gentleman to appreciate a lovely lady loving a cat. So many men hate us cat ladies.
This is life. When people buy a new kitten, they just see its cuteness; they do not think about the fact that it shall one day get old, weak, or sick. I think this is also true for marriage. When people marry, they do not really seem to realise that the beautiful spouse in front of them shall one day become old, weak, or even mentally challenged. Buying a pet or marriage is a really serious contract; we should think carefully before signing up.
Jeong-hun Sin I would sign up again and again and again Jeong-hun. I think however few people know what to do. But as people get old they also need care when they can't walk to the shower anymore by themselves and it is the same with pets. I just don't think people realize that... All they can do is probably complain about the cat smelling and probably don't understand that means the cat isn't grooming anymore. I hope this video has helped people out there to realize that. I have seen some comments where people really didn't know... so I'm glad Garfield even though he has passed, was able to contribute to awareness of taking care of elderly cats. :-) He's probably bragging in heaven about what a big moviestar he is :-)
Jeong-hun Sin wow that's deep... and sad
Jeong-hun Sin well I guess ill be alone the rest of my life
TurboGuard silly
maybe she's eating catnip ;-)
I love how the cat already know what is going to happen and just sits up and waits for her to finish cleaning him.
been doing it for a while :-) I think at least a year
B4Pbakup So little Garfield is still around. God bless both of you. You both are blessed to have each other.
no he is not
B4Pbakup My condolences. I'm sure that Garfield was an awesome kitty. And thank you for taking care of such a beautiful being.
You are great Ty for this. And its to bad he's gone looked like a loyal friend.
This is devotion for animals.
Thank you.
Cassadanielle Picasso 😊 It really truly is
he looks like a old cat
b4bakup you are truly wonderful a real wonderful mama thank you we have a 13 year old Chihuahua he's still pretty active but we still have to clean up but sometimes I'm going to talk to my dad is his dog and let him know that I think he needs probably more help cleaning that was just the bottom because she is really old not as long as you're beautiful cat God bless him and you
Roy McGregor cuz his fur went grey.
Cassadanielle Picasso CONSPIRACY THEORY! The cat is so old that is can't run away.
It's just a joke btw because I know someone's going to think I actually mean that. -_-
I'm crying... why am I crying. I HAVE AN INTERVIEW TO GO TO AND I FEEL LIKE IM GUNNA YELL AT KAREN ABOUT HOW PRECIOUS CATS ARE INSTEAD OF WHY SHE SHOULD HIRE ME.
Kaylee Macadagum 😂😂 hope it went well
Kaylee Macadagum hahahaah did you get the job?
🤦🏽♀️💀💀
yes!
okay SAME
Hahaha his "I just woke up to a warm bath and nice massage" look on his face...beautiful. What a good mom.
My cat would try to KILL me if I tried this on her haha
mine was brave till her last breath, always biting and scratching, loved her,
deumevet losing a kitty is so painful; I hate it, but as painful as it is it's worth it to have that unique friendship for a time...
Koti Hu we had a cat adopt us into his family. We didn't know how old he was though....
We only had him for six month then he died from liver failure on Boxing Day in Australia and in America he died on Christmas
Exactly! That cat is saying, I have the best mom ever!
You are a very kind loving person, Garfield was blessed to share his life with you
And I was bless to have been able to be part of his. as he choose to come live with us. I'm guessing he could have gone anywhere he would have liked but he came and moved in with us :-)
suraj kokate probably because it would take too much effort for an old cat to be bathed daily. And there is no need for it I guess when she can clean him with a wer towel.
No one should bathe a cat daily (especially with soap involved)... Like in the tub full of water kind. I figure your cat would hate you for the rest of their life if they were a wet sopping mess once everyday. XD
Ahhh, poor old kitty cat. Normally only used to seeing kittens on CZcams. It's a shame we all age. I'm guessing the old chap has passed now since it's 2017. Bless. I can tell he had a good life.
David Steele Definitely if Garfield isn't still with us we can see he was very much looked after 😊
You know you've got a happy kitty when he will let you rub his belly!
David Steele if he had a bad life he wouldn't be at least 18 years old.
David Steele yes he passed away
This is so pure, thank you for sharing this
My cat is only 7 and his fur is staring to separate, like he's not taking pride in his grooming. I might have to help him this way. Just maybe without the soap, since he's still grooming himself partially.
I've spent the last day of my cat, Gale at where we first met. Where he was still a kitten, and I was a rebellious teenager. He died the moment we were on our way home that day. It was my greatest achievement, knowing the fact that I've succesfully taken care and giving him a good life until the day he had his last breath...
This made me emotional, thank you for your story and I'm sure that cat was very happy and died peacefully.
Afnan Suhaimi So sade to hear that. I get so emotional by just reading your comment.
Bianca has her sweet side too, beyonce
Afnan Suhaimi 😭😭
Afnan Suhaimi i couldve sworn ive chatted with you before on facebook... anyways, R.I.P. cat
I'm so lucky, my cat is 21 and still healthy, happy and active. He cleans himself and runs and plays and is NOT stinky. You are such a great mom! Your old boy is a lucky boy!
This made my day. I dont even have a cat.
Same but the doctors put him to sleep recently :(
IC3BERG S1MPSON They said nothing wrong, that's rude
IC3BERG S1MPSON yo same, I have 2 small dogs, and a lizard, and my oldest dog is 10
IC3BERG S1MPSON nobody said something wrong?
Aaand I'm even allergic to them. xD
I can tell this baby had a great life. Thank you. ❤️
He did indeed at least from age 6 to the end, that's when he singled us out to be his parents :-)
@@B4Pbakup very sweet. Kitties know.
“I don’t think I’ll have him much longer, so that’s why I take care of him.”
It’s only 5pm, and I am outright crying over those words!
I was right, 3 weeks later we had to let him pass, don't cry, he went to sleep at home in his basked petted by both me and hubby and he left this planet purring :-)
Right in the feeling maker.. You gave him a great life!
+B4Pbakup bless you. I'm crying happy tears.
B4Pbakup thank you 😘
Sorry for your loss, but im glad he was happy.
How sweet, he looks at her like saying "thank you, really, thank you"
Dra Liene ikr, we need more animal lovers like this lady. He's such a sweet old kitty
If there is such a thing as heaven, you and Garfield got tickets for it.
there is :-)
B4Pbakup inshaAllah :)
sorry you feel that way mindsto, but you are wrong, there is ;-)
Awww you can tell he appreciates it .
One of my cats was 22 years old. Rest her precious sweet loving fur angel soul.
Julie Earle I know a farm cat that's 28 years old now.
Erilen he ate 10000 rats
Julie Earle My oldest will be 20 this summer. She can still walk around and play and even go upstairs. She also can wash herself below. So we really only need to brush her to keep her fur looking nice.
Bekll what do you feed your cat?
Bekll We are lucky for that. All my cat needed was the brushing,it was soothing for her, like a kitty massage. One of her favorite things. The other was she loved to have her tummy rubbed. I would do it until she fell asleep. I'm so glad your baby(cat)is doing so well! God bless you both!!
You know what? There really should be more information about elderly care for pets! Thank you for this video :)
nope it's mainly all about them cute kitties... :-/
Mari H My cat just turned 20 in February and the only thing he does different is climb up and down the stairs a bit slower. He gets a bolt of energy once a day and he blasts around the house. The only thing I do for him is I gently put him on the floor after I pick him up, so he doesn't break a leg or a hip. The older he gets, the friendly he is too; he is also annoying in the early morning because he pets my face until I wake up to feed him.., then get this -- the little bastard eats and goes back to bed! Grrrr! To be honest, I've always been pretty rough with him and I wake him up to fight me all time (revenge!), and I think that is what has kept him from going to geriatrics ward, because he is a cat and must be stimulated constantly. All this is hard to believe because 19 and a half years ago I didn't want a cat, but Oscar was to be put down because of a broken leg. I rescued him and paid $1,400 for a fluorescent orange cast (I had my friends sign it as well.), and to this day I say to him, "Oscar, did I save your life, or did you save mine?"
yum yum : Euthanasia? Just Like you folks put down your families. Whose gonna put you down when it'd your turn?
Yup we all get old one day, or at least we can only hope we can become old.
Mari H yess, my mom has a really old dog and she needed a lot of guidance. He has dementia and was scared and confused all the time. Thankfully, our vet explained everything and hes on the right meds
No video has genuinely made me smile like this one!
It's Bella Babe, I know right? I'm not sure why this was in my recommended, but I'm glad it was
It's Bella Babe wow you are gorgeous
Thank you so much for this! My mom's 18 year old cat really dislikes me and has always hated it when I even brushed her. But she's now in her last days and stopped cleaning herself, so I washed her like in your video. I fully expected her to get angry like usual, but she immediately started purring and even turned herself over for me to wash her other side! I'm so glad I found your video. Thank you!!
So happy to hear that. I don't get much feedback from people who actually tried this.
This lady is full of love and thoughtful too. Cats like grooming themselves but old cats are weak to care for themselves.
oh god. my cat is 3 years old. i'm gonna make sure that i'm gonna take care of her until her last breath. i'm so touched and inspired by your video.
That's all your cat can ask of you :-)
Luna Ramirez I would have done the same for our 12 year old cat but kidney failure took him. I was just happy he wasn't suffering.
Hapezibah Skacy I'm sorry for your loss
Hapezibah Skacy my cat was 30, he had kidney failure too. It's such a shame
strong and stable we gave him kitten formula and diapers and we food. He just lost weight too fast and payday wasn't near.
My cat was 19 and I was 18 when he passed away. I've had him my whole life, it was so painful. Truly a close family member. But I am very happy and grateful that he lived to such a nice age- when my parents rescued him he was just a tiny kitten and a vet didn't want to give him a chance as he was very sick. They took him to a different vet and together with him (they cooked healthy meals for him, cared for him in every possible way) they managed to save him, even though my mom was far pregnant with me. Actually, while she was giving birth, my dad was at the vet with him ☺️ They gave him a second chance and believed in him and he lived for 19 beautiful years and he was truly a special beautiful and wise loving cat.
Devil in Her Heart Your comment made me cry, so touching 🙏
Devil in Her Heart Sorry for your loss :-(
I'm sorry about your cat :( It must be very painful not to know about his whereabouts... Don't loose your hope though, cats got their mysterious ways...
I know this little guy has gotten his wings but I'm glad there are people out there that threat their pets (especially the old and sick ones) like gold because they deserve it. My cat Beau had feline aids pan leukemia so he had a double death sentence but he wanted to be with my wife and I so bad because always ate well and drank well. His poop was horrible so we had to constantly clean him. At first he fought us but they are such proud creatures that I think he eventually understood what it was for. He passed in May and he was 10 years old. We still miss him dearly. I absolutely hated cats until he found me at a gas station in Cincinnati during a snow storm. He was a kitten going from person to person asking for help. I went inside the gas station and got some litter, a cardboard box some wet kitten food and took him back to my motel room as I was going to take him to the shelter the following morning. When we got to the hotel room I dimmed the lights, he ate both cans of food, used the litter box and 10 minutes later I heard plucking at the mattress. The little guy climbed up the bed and fell asleep on my chest and didn't wake up until I woke up. He was my best buddy from that point on. I absolutely adored my cat Beau!!!
I am glad you found him..., or maybe he found you :-)
bet the cat feels so much better
yes he did, he had his "purrrrrrralator" on max volume although I don't think you can hear it in the video cause the camera was too far away from us :-)
I hope Garfield is still with us he is a lovely old boy and lucky to have you and of course I know your lucky to have him too
nope we had to put him to sleep about 3 weeks later so I'm glad to have made this video with him. I know he's helping a lot of people wondering what they need to do when their cats get old and just can't groom themselves anymore. His legacy lives on... :-)
B4Pbakup sorry to here that B4P your right you and him are helping to help others its a shame though and im really sorry to here that he is gone
yeah me too but we now have a wonderful doggie that helps us with the grief us his loss :-)
Awww he's such a good boy, letting you clean him like that. My 17-year old lady kitty will not let me touch her tummy, paws, legs or chest and it makes it so difficult to keep her tidy, especially as she's a long haired cat. I have to resort to sneaking up to her when she's sleeping like a ninja with a pair of scissors and snipping her knots off too quick for her to react. It's ridiculous!
LOL it is but at least it shows you are willing to go to any length to take care of her. Bless you :-)
shayni99 I do the same thing. Mine isn't old but she hates to be Brushed so we have to sneak up when she's napping and snip the knits off
My girl Laurel was 17 when she died. She went senile pretty quickly near the end of her life and I did what I could to help her including giving her baths daily because she liked to sleep in the fire place (and get covered in soot). It's kind of funny looking back, as a young cat she would never let me touch her tummy let alone give her a proper bath. She used to purr like crazy when I used the shower head on her, and afterwards she stayed on my lap whilst I dried her with a towel. She never protested once. It's nice to know she trusted me
God Bless you, for caring for this cat, during his final days. Thank you for keeping this video up as your angel cat is teaching all of us! I have a 20 year old and I'm getting ready to do this to her RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!! Thank You
Im happy that even though he is in heavenhe is still helping people here on earth :-)
its almost 1 in the morning, I don't even have a cat, and I have a state exam tomorrow
SUCH A CUTE CAT THOUGH
good luck on your exam
spicyd
spicydeath Hey you know, I think it's fair you let us know you passed!
how'd the exam go?
B4Pbakup it's really late and i read "scam" hehe
How wonderful of you to take care of your old cat like this. They're just like us. Cats stay as children from the first they are born to the end of their lives, and we love to take care of them in either case.
absolutely agree
Im pretty sure when 'analitagoring' said they're just like us, he/she was referring to the fact that they too can old and need care.
My cat is just like a human child
that all depends how you raise them
do u eat beef?
Tears welt up on my eyes with gratefulness every time I watch this video.
Linda Lista me too, her kindness n gentleness touches my heart
Linda Lista 1000th like
Linda Lista ❤️
This made me cry. I lost my cat two years ago and I still can't get over it. I can't stand when people say things like "cats don't love you", "dogs love people more than cats" etc., they just don't know how to treat cats right, they expect them to behave like dogs. I know my cat loved me, he was extremely attached to me and he followed me everywhere, he knew when I was sad, depressed or sick. And it's clear your cat loved you too, he knew you were taking care of him and he trusted you.
How wonderful of you. This is the sweetest thing.
Patricia Nixon That's genuinely lovely
Provakis S i hope garfiled still lives
no he's not sorry, but he went out purring at home in his own basket while both me and hubby were petting him :-)
he had the best life a cat can have garfield was a very lucky cat.
Here in my country there are hundrets of cats and dogs living on the streets.
You took such beautiful care of him. Thank you for sharing this.
My cat Chance is 18 years old. He is an outside cat tho. He is also blind. He definitely doesn't take care of himself anymore but his female companion is also around 18 and she cleans him. He likes to be held like a baby and cuddle. and he still purrs so loud. those cats are my babies.
booshiebear101 oh my ❤️❤️❤️❤️🐱
booshiebear101 that's so lovely. 😍😘
booshiebear101 Awwww so cute :')
So happy this was in my suggestions
me too
this vídeo made me sad because i cant stand the idea my cat is gonna die 😞😭
Marcus Vinicius My cat is 17 next year and she is so energetic and happy right now. Im not looking forward the next few years. :(
Richard honestly, just remember that they had the best life they could have ever wished for. Trust me when I say it, though it will be unpleasant, when you have to let your pet go, you'll feel like it's time. I had to say goodbye to my 18 year old dog Bumblebee a few years ago now. I miss him still, but when it was time to say goodbye, somehow I still felt at peace. Knowing your friend won't ever suffer again may also help.
Just love your cat today...
Vi ni we’re all gonna die btw
Me too... It just made me really sad 😢
Thank you for being so kind to your cat. People who are kind to animals are the best!
agent4you2 i freel so bad now bcz i hit my cat because he steal my food :/ buuuh can't control my self
agent4you2 I agree! ♡
Yaaas
Estefanía Núñez THATS TRUE HE PUT IN SO MANY RULES FOR ANIMALS
Estefanía Núñez Anw really ? Shit his only good part
I know this is an old video and I did hear you say that your vet already told you that "whatever you're doing with that cat, you're doing it right" but as a vet by profession myself, I can't help feeling tempted to say it as well. Also, younger senior cats who still clean themselves somewhat, can be assisted be cleaning them this way, using feline medic soap (which is removed by a non soaped cloth afterwards) which wont hurt them if some is left in their fur and they clean themselves. More over, elderly cats of course have arthritis.
You're actually massaging and warming up your cats muscles softly, without touching his joints directly, but still his joints will warm up, get increased blood flow and the toxins that the ageing kidneys no longer removed sufficiently, will get removed from the muscles with this kind of massage. You probably know he was quite dehydrated here, as most elderly cats are as they get kidney failure slowly with age and don't feel thirst. I have no doubt you treated him perfectly and care for his fluid needs. For other viewers I want to add that wet feed, running water (water sprinkle) and fish will help the cat keep hydrated in this age.
Caring for all the natural body openings will make the cat at ease as they can get stressed out by no longer having the ability, agility, energy or care to clean themselves. Being at peace will increase how much the cat purr and the deep sleep. This will make heart, lungs and kidneys last longer and make the cat grow older with less distress. A "secret" from me would be that people don't need to buy kibble from the vet but can instead read off the ingredients list on the recommended vet approved feed and go to the supermarket to find a kibble with that exact ingredients (in those amounts and values). A quick google or ask the vet, will tell you which ingredients to avoid for your specific cat. I have a "guide" on my vet page for that, but its in Danish, Norwegian and Swedish.
My Cat died a week ago... he was 22
RIP Kitty
They had a good life
Strong Passion Wow 22, my cat is 16.5 and she is still acting like a young cat. Running around and making a mess lol. I hope she can live till 22 too. At least at this point she is not showing much signs of slowing down. 0_o
My lovely car died in the beginning of summer, hit by a truck... Poor boy was only 7.
Strong Passion good for you
My cat Bella died at 12..but she had asthma
This is unconditional love.
N. Zhiv
Sadly it's only one sided. For humans at least. I bet if someone stomped that cat the love for that person wouldn't be so unconditional anymore. I hate how people become nazis to people that harm animals. I am by no means defending them. Animals are beautiful creatures. But so are humans. Capable of redemption. We should love everyone, even our enemies.
+Alex Majin shut yo ass up
Hahaha just like my cats love eachother so much they bite eachother in the ass
This is one of the most heart-warming videos I've seen. I've got one that's 15 and you gave me new perspective of how to take care of him. Oh, beautiful cat by the way.
Glad to be of help Stephen, take good care of him. :-)
Madeline Anby 🙄😂
Stephen Butler Jesus was black
Kristin Wade What the fuck? Jesus wasn't "white" or "black". If you wanna compare his skin color, it was the same as the middle eastern folk's skin color. Sandish color.
The middle east isn't a colour and that part of the world has been nomadic for over 5,000 years with everything from white Aryans and Caucasians to black Egyptians moving around it. You'd need a time machine to finally prove what colour Jesus was. I think he was purple, that's why he stood out.
thank you for being an awesome human being 💕
+The Beauty Neuron Don't know about that but I do love furries :-)
It's true you are pretty awsome :)
yes, about two weeks after this video we had to put him to sleep. Vet orders... But he lasted 5 years longer than she predicted. :-)
I could see through the care and attention you paid to him that he was truly loved and appreciated. We have cats ranging in age from 4 to 16 (next month) and I really want to thank you for this informative video. I always want to learn something new every day and this is a great learning experience. The great thing about our pets is that, depending on your beliefs and values, I believe we will be reunited with them once we all cross over into that next stage of life. It looks like you are in for one heck of a reunion with a grateful "OMG CUTEEEE KITTENNNNN"!
I believe the same and I can't wait for the day to go home, but I guess until that day lots still to do :-) Take good care of your 16 year old on when he might stop grooming or when it get's to hard for him. :-)
thank you so so so much for this
one you show us the unconditional love you have for your animal no matter what the age
and i also have two kitties myself that are brothers and man they are getting up there! 13 years old and still doing okay... so this was really helpful for when i start to see anything indicating i need to help clean them
"you wouldnt leave your mom laying around in her poop...." animals have the ability to feel too, just like us
Old Boy Garfield can be lucky to have such an understanding Human
Unscented baby wipes work well, too. I warm them in hot water and gently wipe my cat. She's 15 and still pretty agile, but it's hard for her to clean off all the excess hair now. I also feed her cat food for mature cats and fresh cooked chicken. She's worth it.
oh that's a good plan too :-)
I have been looking for videos like this because I am terrified of my cat (who is already a bit old) having an uncomfortable life as he ages. i want to make sure he is given the best quality of life as an old cat. thank you for making this video!
See how much you love your cat makes me cry. This is a really lucky cat, respect and loved so much for 18 years... thank you to share this video. If my cat will be with me for so long, I'll surely use your tips to wash her everyday...
My cat died in december. He was 21,5 years old... When I'm watch your video, I tried very hard to not cry. I miss him so much...
Anaelle Dufils I'm sorry for your loss.. but I believe he had a great life! And a long one too! You can be proud! :)
Yoonmin Yes, I'm thinking the same... (sorry for my bad english, I'm french ^^') And my dog died one month after. She Was 14 but She has a brain accident (AVC in french). I'm sorry to tell you all my life x')
Anaelle Dufils it's okay! :)
My dog died 2013, he would have been 14 in december but died a few weks before :/
And sorry for my english too ... I'm german xD
Yoonmin oh sorry for your dog... =/ he has a good and long life too !
Ah XD We are so good in english X3
Anaelle Dufils sure :) he couldn't walk anymore.. and the day after he was dead :/ he died in his sleep.
Yeh xdd
You are such a lovely lady :)
Your cat is very grateful for sure! He must have had an amazing time :)
Just saw the upload date... 2013 and now it's nearly May 2017.
That's sad :/
Someone Unknown he probably passed away but hey. maybe he is still around getting his butt cleaned
Skye_Liight yeah for sure she seems like such a wonderful pet owner!!
who wants my YT channel ILL WAIT Kitty died 3 weeks after this video
Very helpful video. My cat is 15 and I notice he can't reach his lower back very well anymore even though he does a pretty good job everywhere else. I'll have to start doing this for him. Thank you! You're a very good pet owner.
I hope he purrrrrssss as loud when you help him and Garfield did :-)
B4Pbakup Is garfield still with us?
celiu niaad Ohhh,ok. Thank you. Thats terrible :(
celiu niaad oh noo...
no he is not, but we made sure when it was his time to go due to kidney failure he went out with a lot of petting at home in his basket and a purr....
Precious how he likes it and is patient while you clean him. What a beautiful cat.
older cats are more calm
what a lucky cat to have you, bless you...
all animals deserve this much love
great to see how devoted some people are to their pets.
i cried the whole time, just such an angel
I hope to be just like you when my cat is older
; ' D
I think you got this :-)
You are so kind to do this for your cat. Bless your heart. My cat is turning 11 this year and he's already showing signs of age, such as not cleaning himself quite as thoroughly as he used to. I wipe him down with "kitty wipes" every time I visit my dad's house from college (which is only 10 minutes away, so at least once a week), and I can tell it makes him so much happier. Glad to see there are people like you in the world. ❤
I didn't know there are kitty wipes, what an awesome thing, that would be even better :-)
bluefeathercat I am so sad, my cat already 9, she still doing very well by herself. My husband gives her a good bath every other month. Its so sad to come to that point, but I am ready for that. I love my cat dearly eventhou she only love my husband more lol.
B4Pbakup Some wipes aren't biodegradable, so your method is more environmentally friendly. 🙂
God, I wish cats would only die when their humans do, so one would not have to be without the other. My first cat was named Garfield too! He was a siam cat mixed with something else, we never found out what the other race was, but he was light red/cream colored and white with very bright blue eyes. He always squinted, that was really funny to me but didn't limit him. Sadly, he got hit by our neighbors car one day and they took him home with them so he could rest properly. They were an elderly couple who had more time and also we had a young dog and two babies around so it would have been too noisy and stressful for Garfield to recover, so at that time it seemed like the perfect idea. Well, until the day he was supposed to come home but didn't. He simply didn't want to. They spoiled him so much that he didn't wanna leave, so we decided to let him be with them if that was what he wanted to do. We moved shortly after. That was about 5 years ago, sometimes I wonder if he's still alive.
Elder Arthur Maxson does Quinlan let you pet emmett?love that little cat
-greetings by sentinel :)
Arthur Maxson
That's no good. I don't want that to happen. You're to attached. You shouldn't be attached to worldly desires. We live and we die. Be glad they're at peace. Don't want to "die at the same time". Appreciate it while it's here and learn to let go.
This is helpful. My roommate's cat (who always hangs out on my bed), is 18 with hyperthyroidism, and he does still groom daily, but if/when the day comes that he stops grooming, videos like these will help for sure.
I think even elderly cats can be super adorable, as he's proven to be. He still plays with toys occasionally, and all those things people think that is just for kittens/young cats like cuddling (he's super cuddly). It feels like I've become a cat owner even though he's still my roommate's cat and I probably won't live in this house by next year. So I technically never had a cat of my own. I have a feeling that when I've settled in the new house, I'll probably really want one, though.
Pikangie Has that day come yet?
Awe! 😻 He's so handsome for 18 years old. What a sweet baby. I heard that little purr he let out when you touched him. So cute. 😻😻
Almost 4 years later and this is still the best video on CZcams.
Thank you for this bideo. I didn't realise that cats stopped looking after themselves when the get old. I have a 14, 12 and 2 year old cats. So far the 14 year old is still looking after himself.
but you will notice now If any of them stop and need a helping hand :-)
Deborah Martin They don't always. I had a 20 year old cat who cleaned herself right until the end. She was allowed to go outdoors though so I don't know if that made any difference in terms of her not standing in her poop?
Deborah Martin I have a 14 and 13 year old cat and thankfully they both clean themselves too. The 13 year old is a little butterball though so I do wipe "back there" because she's too fat to reach that area lol. She tries her best though.
My 15 year old cat doesn't really clean herself a lot so we help her too :)
I would never have thought they needed help with this. Thank you for sharing….. how lovely.
Aww, what a sweetheart! He's a handsome guy! I think it's lovely and kind for you to take care of his so well. :) xoxo
People like this remind me why the human species has some value
Kozmikōcēlōtl me and faith never go well together.. all i really have is hope.
Chloe Laliberte meanwhile we eat chicken
Baseline Legacy I don't :)
Chloe Laliberte woo! Are you vegetarian or vegan? Or neither aha
Baseline Legacy I'm vegan! how bout you? 😌
Oh my, you've touched my heart. I don't have cats right now, but I've got an elderly little dog from the humane society. He's lost most of the time, but still happy to wake up every morning and hang out with his new found friends. How we treat the least ones tells us how our souls have grown.
You are awesome. 18 years of friendship, antics and cuddles being returned when he needs it most.
He was a lucky cat, looks like he lived a good life!
I don't know why, this made me cry. Probably because it made me warm and fuzzy inside to know that there are beautiful people like you still left in this world, who treat animals with love and respect. Our pets are like family, and they need our care and looking after when they're old. Bless you for looking after your baby even in his last days. :')
+Bhavika Sicka, I got emotional too! It is just so heartwarming to see the love Garfield and the amazing lady have for each other:)
OkayOKAY calm down, all she did was clean a cat.
LOL
Eross Van Leer I know right lol?
"she takes basic care of her pet wow what a good person I'm gonna cry"
like what????
***** Still, even if a cat is young, it's an owner's responsibility to clean it.
Eross Van Leer But as much I know Cats can clean themselves....of course you are the Owner and stuff but in the end a Cat can do it themself. A Dog needs to be washed by its Owner.
And anyway this cat is old (or any Cat who is old) and are too weak to do it themself. I mean when you are (a human) really old and not fit anymore, you cant wash yourself either 😛😜
What a sweet cat and an even sweeter owner. You can see it in his eyes how much he loves and trusts you.
the way a person treats animals will always showcase their soul, so let me tell you lady, that from they way you treat your cat, i can tell you are an amazing human being and i hope there's more like you in our universe
Citripio Granadita
Not just animals but people too! It makes me sad to see how people don't show just as much love to other people and only to animals. They generalize bad people with good people. A true good soul treats both humans and animals with love and care, not just animals.
Alex Majin Yes but there is a fine line, you don't seriously think anyone should care or love things like Hitler and Stalin do you?
When a human kills another human for revenge or other evil deeds, they cease to be a living creature
it is an indicator, but you need more than that too, since Hitler loved animals too. I guess he had a loose wire in there somewhere
I'm 19 and I've had my eldest cat for about 6-8 years now and he's been having some trouble with the kitty box as well as the lil annoying pukes at times, even the mishap of throwing up in my shoe. But I love him all the same when I received him as a kitten! He's notorious for demanding loving from me and my family, butting his head firmly against any hands or faces he sees, purring like a lil motorbike! Or even curling up by my feet to sleep with me through the night, taking up all of the space, haha! But coming bath time he's a vocal lil singer, warning his brother he's next to get a bath, giving me the sad kitty eyes to help him! He's so cute! But when I think to myself, through all of the meows for food at 4 in the morning and all of the smelly surprises he leaves for me, I still love him and hope that he and I get to spend more quality time together napping in the sun ❤
So sweet :') Beautiful cat and you you are so amazing with him ❤️️ Thank you for this video.
Garfield is not with us any more. She answered another person with the same question
this video is going viral 3 years this was made, getting over 100 comments a day, can't keep up, wish I could though.
I return to this video every so often. Just pure love in a world of hate.
I just had to put down my 20 year old cat a couple months ago. She was such an affectionate little thing. It's heartbreaking to see an old friend struggle with age but also heartwarming to know they've lived a good long life, they've grown old with you and you've always taken care of them.
Spruce Bruce why did you put the cat down, is that something you should do if it gets old?
She was having balancing issues to the point where she couldn't stand up or walk straight, she was constantly falling over and slamming into furniture. I did everything I could to move things out of the way, give her pain medication, keep her as comfortable as I could, but it just kept worsening. She was just very old and tired, her condition was not improving, so I made the difficult decision to put her down.
But I would not put a cat down just because it is old. Some cats can live to be 25+. You should take them to the vet for checkups, because sometimes there's no way of knowing if something is wrong. My cat was very clearly sick though.
Spruce Bruce sad to hear that you had to resort to it.
My wishes go to you and your family, I'm sure the cat was happy under your care.
Thanks for your kind words
i have a 20 or 23 year old cat (i said he is 20 for over some years but im kinda messed up about his age but its older then 20 i know for sure) so he is pretty elderly.. he sometimes stinks very badly and i think i can use this to help my lovely cat :) great video and sweet cat :D
Denice someone mentioned they use " kitty wipes" look it up, that may even be better :-)
B4Pbakup oh kitty wipes? i will look it up :) thank you for the tip
well my grandma's cat is already 32 years old...
Denice Ver I think your cat smell bad because ITS FUCKING DEAD FAM. 20 years old my arse.
Dropped Spaghetti you bv too much negativity in your life
Lovely video...
Put tears in my eyes...
You're so sweet and caring person...
I have an old softy too... sorry you lost yours... at least he had a good full of love life near you...
Thank you for sharing this video is very helpful xoxoxo
you're welcome dreamyMM. Missing that old fellow each day, but we have a new furrball now that takes the edge off the hurt somewhat :-)
Cats love to be clean and what you are doing for him, when he can't do it for himself anymore, is the greatest gift of love you can give him. You are a beautiful human being. 💓😽💕💕💕
So much love in this video. It's truly beautiful ❤️
I've been reading your comments and FAQ on Garfield, and I really am sorry for your loss. I'm glad that beautiful creature had such loving and caring people by his side when the moment came.
Yeah, my cat gets scurfier the older he gets. I do more grooming now than I used to. I don't mind cleaning his butt sometimes, he's been my friend for 14 years, I was 17 and he was about 2 weeks old. He's been a good cat, and deserves to be happy now that he's old. Old fella can still walk around pretty good, but he's definitely slower, and doesn't jump on anything any more, not even to grab some roast beef (his favorite).
Glad to hear you are taking such good care of him Brenda :-)
Your video means so much to me. I read your comments about Garfield's passing, you had me in tears.
I had to run right out, find my orange boy, "Louie" and told him that I hope he lives long enough that I can give him this tender loving care. Elderly care, that is, he is adored beyond measure as a young 3 year old.
Thank you for making this video. I have an 12 year old cat and this kind of information will help me take care of her when she gets even older.
My cat died at 21 and he didn't need any special care, he died on the lawn protecting us from mice he hunted even till his death
Cookie Cutter indeed.
What a hero!
lilly wolf what a badass legendary cat you had. he died a hero's death. I love cats so much
lilly wolf But you cant compare your cat with a complete other Cat...no Cat is the same :/
like some old people are still suprisingly fit where other eldery people are not.
lilly wolf Im not crying, you're crying :'(
This is such a worthwhile video. Thank you :)
I do hope people will take it at heart cause they deserve the help so much
I work at a nursing home and I have to handle the elderly in this way every day. This type of care applies to animals as well! They're old- and they can't do things and care for themselves as they used to. In this woman's defense, she is caring for her kitty the way that she should. He can't do it on his own, and when it's his time to go, I'm sure he will go. But she is obviously doing something right! I mean, 18 years old?! You can even see it in his face that he's an old timer LOL he's so darn precious! I found her dedication to this animal, moving- you can tell she has a huge heart! Something that this world needs more of. You're an inspiration! 💖
*Awwwh! This is such a beautiful video! I'm so sorry Garfield is no longer here* ❤ *I feel and understand your pain, and also the peace in your heart.. I had a tiny kitten when I was 4yrs old, I named her Pepsi.. She went on to live a full healthy life for 22 years! I was 26 and Pepsi was almost 23 when she died.. She was blind in one eye for the last year, but still catching mice* 😍 *Then lost sight in her other eye (Renal/Kidney failure caused her detached retinas) so was housebound unless on my lap outside for fresh air and a snooze in the sun. One day she just wasn't "right".. So i got the vet to come out to the house that day, and she said it was time to say goodbye.. I sat on the floor, legs crossed but open, bit like a meditating position lol, with Pepsi snuggled in her sheepskin blanket nice and warm in my lap.. kissing her head, holding her paw as she purred, and went to sleep. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do. She was my best friend from when I was 4yrs old, until I had to let her go when I was about 26yrs old, and she was almost 23yrs old.. Not only did she help me through the "normal" growing up, but also through parents divorce, dad breaking his neck in an accident, mums poor health, then at 14yrs old I had stage 3 cancer, a year of chemotherapy, and had another 2 tumours after that.. She was *always* *there.. even through "man trouble" lol.. She was my best friend, and she knew it. I made sure she knew it every day. She was my baby, and my little old lady all in one. She was grooming herself up until the day I had to call the vet out! crazy! I never had another cat, couldn't cope. But when I got with my boyfriend, he had a 4yr old cat.. so now I'm his mummy.. And he is now 10yrs old. I'm 1000% dreading the end, and I know it will break his daddy, but if he's anything like my Pepsi, he's got plenty of time left. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, and for teaching others with elderly furbabies how to bathe them. It's a special video, you are so lovely, and Garfield was beautiful* ❤ *I loved the way he sat up properly ready for the next part of his wash* 😻 *I'm sure my Pepsi and Garfield are close by, playing, and dreaming sweetly. Thank you. Much love xx* 😍❤😻😘😘😻 *xxx*
Miss Bethy i feel your pain it killed me to see my cat get sick this last week idk what she was sick from but took her to the vet and she did a big guess on what she was sick from and well shes doing so much better shes eating again and even cashing bugs lol i was so worried about her when she got sick
OldYe Chap Aww I'm so glad she's doing better now, poor girl 😍 I wonder if they know how much they make us worry sometimes! Hopefully she stays well for a long time 😊
Дмитрий Саруханянц Aw thank you ☺ Aww, I'm sure your lovely boy knows exactly how much he is loved too, he gets treated like a king 😍 My boy, has just turned 11 recently, and I worked out from a poster at the vets that at 11yrs old, he is 60yrs old in cat years, and now every human year is equals to 4 cat years (so when he's 12, he will be 64.. at 13 he'll be 68 etc) so that's crazy! So being at 60yrs old it's ok to see them slowing down a little. I have read that some sources say that the oldest living cat was 34 years old in human years (153 in cat years, that's crazy lol) It is sad to see them slowing down, I know, but have faith that you could still have many more wonderful years together ❤ My neighbour's cat is 18yrs old, recently his owner watched in horror as he had sneaked outside and got hit by a car.. He is very small and boney now, sleeps a lot, but still feisty at times.. His owner said the car clipped him a little, then he rolled over, then got out and ran off towards my house where there are fields.. This cat has had 2 strokes in the last 2 months and relies on daily medication.. without it, he and his sight deteriorates fast, so we were all out looking for this poor boy.. 2 days and still nothing.. Then one evening I went to start my car, heard a noise, then the cat appeared - He had got disoriented I think, because his owners had moved house a few months ago (they didnt move far, just around the corner and infront of my house, so he was a bit disorientated, but he recognised where I lived as I had a special bond with him, and I think he thought he still lived at his old house - which has new people and cats) so what he had done was climbed up underneath my car into the engine area I think, to keep safe and warm.. So when I started the car, he climbed out.. I cried with relief as he meowed and walked out to me, I picked him up gently, wrapped him in my soft jumper and walked him around the corner to his new home.. he was purring all the way! His owner also cried with relief.. He had been gone for 3 days and 2 nights, the night I found him would've been his 3rd night missing, without medication.. which is a long time, especially for an 18yr old cat! As soon as he was home, he had his medication, and ate a bowl full of food! 😍😻 Cats really are stronger than we realise, and such fighters. Your sweet boy could still have many years left, but when the time does come, you will get through. It is heartbreaking, and I still miss my beautiful Pepsi, but I know, and she knew that she had the best life possible ~ Just like my current boy, Bones knows.. And just like your beautiful boy.. He knows how loved he is.. And that is all that matters. Slowing down a little is ok, we also slow down as we get older, so do as you are; keep him fed, watered, warm, groomed, and cover him with kisses every day, and enjoy the time you have.. You are his mum/dad, he is your baby, and he knows this, and he feels your love every day. Never give up hope! 😍 I hope you have many more wonderful years together xx ❤😻
Дмитрий Саруханянц Aw that's absolutely heartbreaking, I'm sorry you had to go through that, life can be cruel.. Yeah, the thought of the afterlife would be amazing, I suppose people cling to whatever they believe to get them through. They really are family members 😍 Wow, your boy sounds beeeeautiful!! He really does! The thing I was reading about cats ages, it said some breeds tend to live longer than others (of course sometimes they get sick and it can't be helped) but it said as an example that 2 breeds known to live longer and Manx and Siamese (although I'm not sure what Manx is, but I'll Google that later haha) Your blue eyed boy sounds beautiful! If CZcams ever get with the times, and let us put photos in comments, i'd love to see a photo of him, so if that happens and you remember, put a pic of him here 😍 Give him extra hugs and kisses from me and my Captain Bones 😊 Have a lovely day! X
Miss Bethy oh god i am crying!! Geez you are one strong woman!! More strength to you ma'am❤
had a really rough day, cheers for making it a bit better.
Glad I was able to be of some help
What a wonderful video. My two darling cats passed away of old age, three years apart, and it is still hard for me to think of them without bursting into tears. Watching you lovingly grooming Garfield really stirs my heart. Thank you for sharing the caring, gentle way all people should care for their fur children.
Watching you giving Garfield a loving wash made my day. I could really feel the love that you two share. To live with our feline veterans is a challenge but gives us humans so much. They teach us how to love unconditionally.
Garfield is very sweet. Older cat touch my heart.
Best wishes from Germany 💗
P.S. I am a beader, too.
Thank you for this video, you are a great fur mom, you can tell your cat really loves and trusts you. Our cat is 12 and is a rescue, her first owners abused her and took all 4 paws and got them declawed so she has major joint problems now. We have to help her clean her butt at least once a week because she can't reach back there as well as she used to because of her hip pain. We have steps to she can climb onto chairs and beds and nice soft spaces for her to sleep. In the winter we have a heating pad we let her use. It takes special people to look after both elderly and disabled people and animals. Thank you for being one of the good ones!
You sound like such a lovely parent to your kitty, she is very lucky to have been given a second chance by such nice people.
awww the cat looks so happy and well taken care off. thank you for the sweet video!
This is why people shouldn't buy an animal as a toy. They Need time and care
You're lovely and so was that cat.
*Looks at their 18 year old cat running around the house* I guess when he gets older?
Nihil von Gades right!
