Last time Alaska Airlines said the same exact thing after outbidding JetBlue to buy Virgin America 7 years ago, they proceeded to eliminate their brand and get rid of all of their new Airbus aircraft. Don’t see how the Department of Justice will simply allow Alaska Airlines to buy Hawaiian Airlines like that when they’re currently giving JetBlue a hard time over buying Spirit Airlines after they had outbid Frontier Airlines.

I do agree with you to a certain extent, however Alaska did state their plans immediately with Virgin and stated they would eliminate the brand and eventually merge it into the Alaska brand. The Airbus planes being axed would be a no brainer to save money on commonality. I also feel as if JetBlue would be an upgrade for Spirit as they are a "bare bones" carrier that doesnt even have seats that recline. This is the major reason Spirit had been a no for me. I have taken Spirit flights and always paid extra for a "Big Front Seat." The room is great but the fact that they do not recline which saves them money on the cheapest seats you can get is a deal breaker for me. JetBlue on the other hand raises the bar on LLC's.

They’ll operate as separate entities like those we see with Air France/KLM. Any Airbus aircraft ordered by the Alaska Airlines group would go directly to Hawaiian in order for Alaska Airlines itself to keep its commitment to being permanently All-Boeing.

Hopefully it will be like Lufthansa and they keep the branding like they did with Austrian and SWISS.

Long live Virgin America. I hope what happens here is the opposite of what happened there.

Big 4 airlines tickets are way to high rightnow. Hope JetBlue can compete with them.

They only overlap on twelve routes, and only TWO (PDX-HNL and PDX-OGG) are duopolies. Some divestitures at PDX could easily fix that.
How would the DoJ argue against it? The whole crux of their argument against the JetBlue merger with Spirit was that the latter’s existence forced other airlines to lower their prices. Alaska and Hawaiian are more traditional carriers, both of whom serve more remote communities.
Either way, this merger will hinge largely on the 2024 election. If Biden loses, this deal is a foregone conclusion, but if he wins, I could see them putting up a fight.
