  • Over the past week I've overpaid for two Radeon 6700XT graphics cards. One was still the cheapest working card, and one was the cheapest broken card, or so I thought. But what's really wrong with this GPU?

Always good to check the +12V x Amps value on a PSU too. Ideally it matches the Wattage rating of the PSU (or exceeds with multi-rail PSU's) but -50W is acceptable for me.
Just you get some PSU's that say '600W', but the +12V x A = 335W or something. Generally these aren't 80+ rated either, although there are some reliable 'true-wattage' PSU's out there with only an 80+ white rating.
It does come down to experience but i guess just use your noggin and logic with every part you buy, ask questions either from seller or a friend with experience.

  • @nunyabeeswax3012

There are more issues with the litepower 450 beyond just the wattage, the most obvious among them being group regulation; regulating the 12V and 5V line on the same coil means that as one of those voltages gets drawn too much, the other tends to fail. With modern graphics cards, the line *will* get drawn too much thanks to the ever increasing power demands. Honestly it's no wonder that it failed under a 6700XT, and the system crashing seems like a best-case scenario. OCP on these cheap units is never great, so it's not a good idea to rely on it to save you.

This is late, but I had great luck in getting the 6700xt at MSRP. I bought one from a CZcamsr on their discord, for the MSRP prices after sales tax, I'm so excited for it 😊
    It's coming on Thursday!!!
Pairing my i5 10400 PC with the 6700xt would be a massive upgrade from my last build. Which had a Ryzen 5 1600, and RX 580.

Years ago me and a friend of mine bought the same ATI GPU on the same day. After a few months his started to crash the system but mine was fine. I had a Corsair HX520W and he had a no name 600W. I told him it was his PSU but he wouldn't have it. He swore it was the GPU and asked me what he should swap it for as it was still under warranty. So I chose a newer but cheaper and less power hungry Nvidia card. The store was quite happy to swap it because it was a cheaper card and it worked fine in his system. Well over a decade later, if we ever talk about that he still swears it was the GPU, so I just let him babble on ...

I bought a RX 6700 XT a few weeks ago. It is a good example that you have to have a case and cooling to go along with it. I put the card in my mid-tower case. I started to run games and the GPU was hitting 80c, but junction temps were toward 110c. I am an engineer, an worked on electronic products for 18 years. A lot of components were rated at 104c for highest temp before problems. So I looked at the case. I added one fan. Put all fans directly to the power supply molex plugs. The mainboard fan connectors were to slow for cooling the case. So I have 3 fans air intake, and two fans air exhaust (including power supply). There are grills in the case the intake air can also escape by pressure differential. I set the Graphics card fan profile to on early at 60c to get ahead of GPU, and Junction temps early. The card fans hit a steady 2600 - 2900 rpm and keep the junction temperature down between 80c - 90c. The GPU runs about 65c, and the CPU 70 - 75 c. I happy with this level, and I don't smell heat, like to hot anywhere in the case. At 1440p this card performs well, about 120 - 200 fps depending on the Battlefield games I am playing............Update: With all the playing around on the cooling, I finally figured out that if I cap the FPS at about 100 FPS, the card runs cooler 65 - 75c with the fan speeds turned down. On the AsRock motherboard bios you can custom set you fan speeds according to temperature of MB or CPU. Other motherboards may have this also. But I hooked my fans back up top the motherboard connectors and everything is COOLER. Especially when you are not playing games.

Correct. That's a major problem I also keep hearing about with the new AMD or Nvidia graphics cards. So many people install the cards into their systems not realizing that their power supplies are nowhere near capable of handling the power requirements of the latest video cards. I do know that the review sites like to advise people to not buy PSU hardware with more power than they need, but none of the reviewers expected the GPU manufacturers to require over 750 watt power supplies when the average user has installed components that only bump up to 500 watts.
