- University of Dundee Christmas Lecture 2014,
In this lecture, Dr Finkel will tell his amazing story of receiving the rare tablet, the discoveries this presented when he started to decode the inscriptions and what happened when he went on to build the Ark.
I'm going to watch everything I can find with Irving Finkel.
Sad day when Irving Finkle dies. He will be sad to miss out on new finding and discovers to talk about or make sense of.

This is my current quest as well
Same here. I have been so interested in him. I also plan to buy all of his works. He is so Interesting to listen to
Same
Irvine Finkel's passion is impossibly contagious!
Humour, ancient history and masses of personality.
Always informative and entertaning 💜🙏
Irving has to be one of the Jolliest wizards ever.
unless you call his pet project Noah's Ark...
Irving Finkel is inspiring enough to make me, a history student currently writing two resarch papers, attend a lecture from 5 years ago in my free time
imagine if schools had plenty of teachers like him
It would make for a new era of flourishing wisdom and knowledge, like there are some times in our history ^^
That would be good. Better than just one of him. But even with plenty like him, unless all were like him, I think you'll find the ones unlike him being disliked and not listened to still. It's all about perspective. He's great, but he's greater because loads of them are shit. If all of them are great, non of them are., but would you want to be the one that isn't great?
@@woutervanr That`s a disgusting way to look at things.
Why have winners anywhere?
How about telling a runner to slow down so the others won`t get jealous..
If every runner runs the same time and it`s an olympic record, that means they`re all equally not great by your logic.
Everyone can`t be great, but having ONE good teacher might just inspire students in other classes as well.
"that was a good lecture, I`m in a better mood now for the rest of the day and will learn more"
"that class was awful I can`t stand that hostile idiot teacher, such a crap perspective on things, but at least there`s a good class later"
Nobody wants to be "not great", but most of us don`t want other people to suck so we won`t get all pissy about it, that`s PATHETIC.
Henry Hull, Winona State University USA..
iHelloway PLENTY I want them ALL to be like him
Me: *Sees an hour long lecture on CZcams*
Me: Hell no
Video: We have Irwin Fink-
Me: I’m already halfway
Indeed 😂
there a re lots of hour long lectures that beat almost every modern tv documentary about the same topic.
@@5Andysalive Yes but do they have Irving Finkle
we British are so lucky to have a great mind and great educator like Irving , he IS a national treasure , stop worshiping false idols on x factor and so called celebrities , here is someone to aspire to
Truth!
You sound like us Americans who are trying to tell our people the same. Borders only exist on maps brother, keep fighting the good fight, nothing else is worth it.
ABSOLUTELY!!!
I'm happy to have subbed to him.
💖👻🤘

So nice for U of Dundee to find Utanapishtim himself to talk about his mortal predecessor Atrahasis on this marvelous occasion
7:50 end of the "further ado"
You are God's gift to man.
Lovely, always these people that have to take the stage to show they are also important.. :)
@@VincentGroenewold and are not even good at it. That's the worst part.
👋
adieu, stupid
What a great Christmas present. Imagine bundling up the whole family and off to Dundee to enjoy this wonderful talk by one of the world's great nerds.
Thanks to NightDocs now I've been on a marathon of a bunch of videos with Irving in them. It's been 2 days and I haven't learned this much and been this entertained in a very long time.
Irving Finkel is brilliant. You can skip to 8:00, that's when he starts.
Many thanks!
Thanks...i really was falling asleep.
The passion this man shows gives me chills! :D What a treasure
When is he going add the Top Ten List?
Finkel resembles Dumbledore both in looks and demeanor :D i really like him!
He look's more like this guy... secure.i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00780/Karadzic-220_780033f.jpg
and he's a war criminal from the Yugoslavian Wars...
There's another video on here somewhere I think, but IIRC he was somewhat loosely involved w the Harry Potter movies - they borrowed his chess set.
Obviously, making a serious life-long study of the art of poking bits of mud is an excellent grounding for becoming a stand-up comedian.
I wish I could take a class with him as the professor. He is so funny!! And I have learned new-to-me information.
sending love and appreciation from the USA... Finkle rocks
What an amazing man! He makes a biblical story tale into a possible historical event. (I haven’t checked with Enki). I’ll be watching all of Dr Irv’s videos today!
The actual speaker doesn’t come on until 8:00 so you can skip right to that. Or listen to the long annoying intro if you want. But make sure you listen to this lecture because it is presented in such a great way and is well worth watching. He’s a funny guy too. The hour will flyby because he will have your attention the whole time. Very entertaining. I’m thinking that I am going to buy the book now because I enjoyed this so much.
I saw that coming a mile away, I almost forwarded to half way of the video lol
Thank you! I only wish I saw it before I started because that second soeaker was god awful. He said um ah every sentence!
This man gives me hope for humanity. thank you.
Absolutely! He is a gem!
I greatly admire Irving Finkel's sense of humour and rich enthusiasm. I'd watched and enjoyed another of his talks before, and thought: I have to at least start this one. Well, he kept me glued the whole way, right to the end. Bravo, sir!
So much energy, so much enthusiasm. Is it even possible to give to others so much of it? Who wouldn't love Irving's unique personality!?
absolutely fantastic man. Irving Finkle is life.
This video is 6 years old now I’m baffled that it doesn’t have millions of views.
This a huge discovery and an entertaining lecture and the world has came a long way since 1872 and George Smith’s shock.
the video title needs to be more to the point and every intelligent person should know about it.
A wonderful teacher, the type that was non existent in my Grammar School, I fancy I would have paid more attention if we had teachers the calibre of Prof Finkel.
Really kind of those gentlemen to entertainment these destitute folks on Christmas.
I thoroughly enjoyed Dr Finkels presentation. He is informative and entertaining. I really wish all presenters were like him.
What a gloriously enthusiast communicator!
There's an amusing detail about Enki's speech to Atrahasis, adumbrated here by the text Dr. Finkel reads near the beginning. Why is Enki addressing a reed wall?
From less fragmentary versions of the story, we find out the flood was not the first attempt by the gods to wipe out humanity. Every earlier attempt, however, was foiled by Enki who, less vindictive than the other gods, didn't want to see this happen. But in this case, since Enki was the god of water, it was not only going to be his particular responsibility to carry out the plan, he was specifically forbidden to tell _anyone_ about it.
So, instead, he decides to reveal his plan to a light partition, a reed wall. It was clearly no fault of his that Atrahasis just happened to be on the other side of that wall and "accidentally" overheard everything.
Thanks for this! I thought this whole time he was saying "wool", which makes even less sense.
Amazing!
Incidentally, what reading do you recommend for someone interested in Mesopotamian mythology?
interesting. is this an eg/progenitor of something of a motif in babylonian literature? im just reminded of pyrimus and thisbe speaking through a reed partition.
@@emlmm88 Any translation of the Epic of Gilgamesh is a good place to start.
@@MonkeyWhoWouldBeKing I don't know. As far as I know, this isn't otherwise a recurring theme in Mesopotamian literature, but it would be interesting if a non-Greek version of that story were found.
Finkel is unparalleled!
What all history teachers should be….a gem of a man….any honours?
Great Educator, He makes you what to know more.
Irving Finkel is a national treasure.
Mr Finkel is so learned and he's such fun to listen to. Lovely lecture, thank you!
Thank you for posting
Fascinating- and it is so essential that teachers are engaging. Oh my goodness are you engaging!
What a fantastic lecture!

I'm going to watch everything I can find with Irving Finkel.)
Yes he is rather watchable, and very interesting.
Just love the way he brought out and pushed back the knowledge of the Ark, all very interesting.
Dr. Finkel for president of the world!
The precision of the description re. Dimensions and the fact that the author of it thought about putting in decks and of how they would be supported, even though regular coracles don't have them, suggests that boats like this have actually been built in his time and that he witnessed it. Perhaps a royal pleasure boat?
Finkel for President 2020!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
as an American i can say with certainty that we do not deserve Finkle as president
I really enjoy his lectures. He is a great speaker and funny too.
WOW INCREDIBLE Thank You Professor.
Finkel is such a treasure.
In introducing the speaker, the gentleman reveals many of the best bits of Dr. Finkel's lecture. I don't understand the point of these introductions at all, but this is too much
They somehow have to fill 8 minutes of introduction in a lecture where nobody cares about them
.I love how Irving charmingly but clearly adressed the fact that they stole his material to do so. .
A national treasure
I just skipped the introduction and went straight to Dr. Finkel's lecture!
I love this guy!
Fantastic!!! Every time I hear Dr Finkel speak he holds my interest in spades.
for the eternal glory of dundee!
20 years ago this would have happened to the people in front of him and that would have been it.
Maybe some stale articles after the fact.
I'm so happy to live when we do...Almost 100% better than clay even if it's short-lived.
I need to find this documentary now.
Imagine if someone just walked in one day with the most fascinating artifact for your academic research.
20:35 Most people who make exhibitions have some-sort of idea of what the public wants.... and it often has nothing to do with the public! - So true!
Top bloke
The story at the end about the oldest map in the world is incredibly interesting.
first 8 min = em er, em err
08:05
End of introductory waffle and Finkel finally shows his face and beard.
{:-:-:}
Fascinating!
Easily one of the funniest persons EVER!!!!!
Delightful!
"Little giraffe" he got me xD I was like yes yessss auggh
WHY DOES THIS GUY SUDDENLY GET RECOMENDED TO ME EVRYWHERE I ONLY WATCHED ONE TOM SCOT VIDEO WIT HHIM
Irving Finkel would be a great candidate for playing Shylock in the Merchant of Venice; love and appreciate him so...
Correct spelling is "Irving FInkel".

The story of Enki is the basis of every Marvel movie ever.
Coracles were 9used in Wales,by fisherman on the rivers, I don't know whether they stiĺ being built
. They used them for hu9ndreds all around the Marcches? Best design apparrently
Only the British would make me fast forward two introducers.
I did exactly the same, fast forwarding until I could see the manly bearded man.
Finely is the best!
Cool video.
Lecture starts 7:56
Thank you!
Such a fun and interesting wealth of information! I'm going to watch everything I can with this extraordinary man!
Is he dunking a glass of wine like that? And who is filling his glass?
Skip to --8:00-- and save 8 mins of introductions. You're welcome. 👻🤘
Finkel boat has to be put into some museum.
This makes me wish I was seven years older
I think Irving Finkel might be my favourite person I don’t know. Neil Oliver is a close second 😁

44:16 I can forgive Finkel for erroneously classifying bitumen as a ‘national treasure’, in Iraq, since he is obviously less of an energy lawyer, but more of an archeological historian and linguist. In fact, Iraq’s constitution proscribes that bitumen, and all other natural resources, are the inherent property of the State, and are prohibited from being exploited and exported from Iraq by foreign entities. Of course, energy lawyers have found sneaky alternatives to the traditional production-sharing style of contracts in order to purposefully circumvent this. However, I have to admit, Finkel’s way of describing it evokes an image of them hatching a plan for the theft of bitumen from Iraq by none other than Nicholas Cage himself.
Why is he so funny
4 rule's with Santa
1 you believe in Santa.
2 You don't believe in Santa.
3 You look like Santa.
4 You are Santa.
😀😏😳🎅
Speech starts at 8:00. You’re welcome.
52:00 very intressting the Dutch are a old seafaring people and we call boats/ships she/her as well.
that is because water makes ships/boats very unpredictable, and wooden ships are high maintenance like a lady...
Never considered the unpredictability and high maintenance, I had always been told calling vehicles by feminine names (especially boats) is because it was mostly men sent off for months or years at a time and used it for fondness
Lecture starts at 8:00... ;)
Finkel is Einhorn?
Bryan 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Einhorn IS Finkel
He's not Santa. He's Professor Hector Alembick from Tintin: King Ottokar's Sceptre.
8:00
8:00 for irving
Me too
Finkel...
Accch, ye've spelt his name wrongly in the title, but everything else is great.
So how about if “the ark” was several of these coracles, all tied together? You know, lions here, koalas there
Or what if there were no Koalas because they didn't live in the region?
Takes about 7 minutes before we get to Irwin Finkle.
thanks to Enki for the tip-off and all, but seeing how Atrahasis couldnt even built a boat to begin with, and he had only 24 hours, perhaps the actual GOD could have fixed the boat himself, rather than taking the time to make extremely detailed instructions...
Irving the White is just the best!
Michael Scott sent me here. Is this the Dundee’s?
