A Conversation with IRVING FINKEL About Ancient Mesopotamian Ghosts

- You lovely nerds are in for a treat today: normally I would edit these conversation episodes down to under an hour, however I simply couldn’t bring myself to cut any of my chat with Dr Finkel. Therefore, the only editing that took place was when I cut some extended pauses by either Dr Finkel or myself when we were thinking of how to formulate our thoughts AND any distracting stutters (they’re always bound to happen on these longer calls, regardless of the guest). That is quite literally it.
Before Dr Finkel answered my first question, I also edited out a small moment where he asked if I wanted the long version or the short version of his “context” story. Since neither of us was pressed for time, I CHOSE to have Dr Finkel explain his background in the long version of his story. There was no point leaving this little back and forth in considering the answer is so long, so I also cut that to ensure the episode could begin as quickly as possible.
Aside from extended pauses, the stutters and that one back and forth, absolutely no actual content has been cut nor edited out from this conversation. If you guys prefer the episodes to be under an hour (as I’ve done for the past 3 years), do let me know and I’ll make sure to stick to that timing in the future. However, if you guys like the extended episodes then I’ll make a conscious effort to upload more unedited videos.
*JUST A NOTE* : This is not to say that every conversation I’ve had on the channel has been long and I’ve cut them down. The vast majority of guests can only give me a certain amount of time, and generally speaking, you guys get those videos unedited. However, when I do get the chance to have these guests on for longer, THAT’S when my editing hat normally comes on and I trim and cut the content down. So if you guys like this episode in its entirety, I’ll make an effort to upload longer episodes when my guests allow me to have such time with them rather than making all the episodes roughly the same length.
Also, I did a terrible job describing "Soul" to Dr Finkel so please don't come for me in the comments. Watching that part back was painful, but I stand by giving Dr Finkel the homework of watching it because that film is a MASTERPIECE.

I picked up Dr Finkel’s book when it first came out, perhaps it’s time to get it back out and give it another read!
A magnificent interview, Erica! Thank you, Dr. Finkel, for opening up the proverbial gate to let us into the Mesopotamian world, their stories, their outlook. Once again through the wonders of MoAn Inc., I have more books to read. Thank you both!
I've loved Dr. Finkel's presentation style for years and would listen to him read the phone book. Thank you for the wonderful interview.
Well though of format, I particularly like the fact the interviewer doesn't interrupt and lets Dr. Finkel to just talk.
Dr Finkel is one of those rare cases, where you dont really know somebody for real but you feel as if he is a very beloved uncle, visiting once in a while and making everything around him better.
His enthusiasm is classic, no pun intended!

I like you interviewing style; you allow your guest do most of the talking. One thing that could have been added to your discussion with Dr. Finkel was the ancients' understanding of dreams. How can an ancestor be gone forever if they can appear to you in a dream or in a drug induced vision quest? Both the Old and New Testament contain verses devoted to dreams, dream interpretation, visions and revelations.
It is incredible that we can glean these insights into the culture of ancient peoples from what remains of their writings.

Thank you for the spectacular interview! Dr. Finkel should be recognized as a universal historical treasure; he is a gem of Western civilization. When I hear him speak, I feel like dropping everything else in my life just to study cuneiform writing.
