  • Yo!! What's up, dudes?!?! Checking out my 2013 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Pro II in Honey Burst. I'm running through a Panama Loco and into the Two Notes Reload box. For a cab I'm using a Rosen Digital Marshall 4x12 IR and TH2 for the stereo reverb.

That overspray could probably be buffed out with a pedestal buffer, or even careful wet sanding with MicroMesh. The headstock can definitely be repaired with a simple lacquer drop fill. Pickguard could probably be buffed out too, but there's always the option of new pup rings and guard. That would just leave the bobbin overspray, but I'd bet it'll wear off on its own.

I just bought 2014 Epiphone Traditional Pro Les Paul (Honeyburst). I've had several Gibson's in the past. But the Epi is an awesome guitar for the money. I have two USA Strats which have been sitting around unplayed because I can't put the Epi down.

Beautiful guitar. It obviously sat on a guitar stand in a bedroom close to a womans grooming mirror. The spray appears to be dried hairspray. I have seen this on guitars before. Most modern hairsprays dry like a cement. The specs won't buff off because they tack strongly to the finish. They will however wash off with the gentle application of a lukewarm moistened cloth. It will take some work also. A lot of modern hairsprays dry like a strong epoxy. The good thing is that they are not oil based and won't attack the lacquer finish. Awesome videos PixxyLixx! One of my favorite personalities on CZcams.

Great buyer beware story it's a Honey Spray Burst Gibson. The sort of damage that's impossible to see when buying sight unseen. I was worried that you have been on a new guitar buying frenzy and that's not you. Nice sound! If you are to buy another, just stick to your $300 limit and pick up a few more guitars

Oh wow, that is a real shame. I have one of these in Merlot with gold hardware and a 50s neck. Absolutely killer guitar, looks fantastic too. Worth seeking out a good one, they are extremely good value for money! I remember at the time (bought it new) you could get every colour with either a 50s or 60s neck but there was limited stock in the UK so it was first come first served, they disappeared very quickly.

Get more money off, buff it out, get new pickup rings and pick guard they are cheap. If you can get it for $1000.00 it would be worth keeping for your playing and beater guitar. You can also upgrade the bridge and tail piece for like $100, which a lot of people do anyway

I think you are doing the right thing by returning it. I bought and sold a 2014 LPTPII for less than that in perfect condition a few months ago. The Pro IIs go for less that the Traditionals due to that satin finished sides and back, AND some people hold the "GC Exclusive" as a negative, although they are a great model. You can do MUCH better. That thing has been abused. I ended up with a Traditional (not Pro) for the slightly fatter neck. You need a Gibson Les Paul in your collection! Lots of great ones out there. Good luck.

    Pixxy
Kudos for looking at the best value vs performance model Gibson out there that also includes binding and nibs like the Standard.
I own 3 of this model..a 2012,2013,2014 and they are everything you could want in a Gibson with tone, playing feel and appearance.
I had the hum on my 2012 model and I fixed it by using shielding paint in all the cavities.
If you take out the battery the guitar still works and the boost knob becomes a kill switch.
The other great value Gibbo from around the same time is the Signature T which is similar..but does not have a boost but still gives you the 57 pickups, nibs and splits.

Are you completely sure it's some sort of spray? I've purchased vintage (and even newer) guitars with big dust globs (which look similar) built up simply from exposure, and it never comes off with silicone-free polish. The trick is a plain white toothpaste (none of the fancy flavors or enhancements). Apply just a pea-sized amount per side, spread around with a paper towel, let it sit for a couple of minutes, remove with a damp paper towel, quickly dry with a paper towel or clean cloth, and quickly apply polish. That's always worked for me, so you might as well try it!

A light polishing with Laquer thinner will clean off the overspray just don't rub too hard and deep. You want to just press firmly enough to wipe off the surface crap (overspray). Use the Laquer thinner sparingly. Hope that helps. It should come clean pretty quickly. Do that and get GC to refund a few more "C" notes back into your pocket.

I'm don't really care much for some finish imperfections in the case of this Les Paul. If the imperfection does not impede playing capability and it sounds great, I could care less about about the finish. It can easily be buffed out if needed be. If you bought it brand new, than it's a different story.

  • @achillesStar

I bought pickups and wiring (including pots & jack) of eBay that were taken out of the same model guitar. The guy who sold them to me said that when he took out the pickups he was shocked to find ground wire from the bridge wasn't connected. So it could be the same on this hence the hum.

2013 was a really good year. No end of really great sounding guitars that year. Quality was shit but the tone was ace. Good batch of mahogany I guess. Its kinda weird actually - as that guitar has the same 'tone' as my 2013 does even though my 2013 was a deluxe. Its very distinctive.

Out of curiosity.... have you ever tried an Edwards Les Paul???? really good and CHEAP for the quality level, by far... the best Les Paul ever to be made other than Gibson

I mean, it’s a used guitar. All of that adds to its story. Plus you had the guitar so close to the camera and you could still barely see the overspray it’s not that important. But if it is to you take it to a luthier and get it buffed out. 1300 bucks for a Les Paul traditional is a great deal! I would deal with the little bumps and bruises that it has for that price. I have the exact same traditional as the cherry burst you talked about in this video. They are great guitars!

Steve, the very first video that I ever saw of you, was you playing a Chibson Les Paul. Your tone was absolutely massive! I was hooked! I couldn't help but notice that with this Les Paul, it was evident that you were inspired to play differently what what I've seen you play for quite some time. I think you are more of a Les Paul guy, than you want to admit. And personally, so am I! I think you "need" a Gibson Les Paul.

Ya know, after watching this video it was making me wonder because years ago my mother had these battery operated air fresheners, and every so often they'd automatically spray air freshener, and I remember having a couple of CD's laying around, and that spray would do the exact same thing as on that Les Paul, and I could NOT get those spray marks off of the CD's for anything. They wouldn't play either, they were ruined, so I'm wondering if this guitar could've been the victim of something like that????? I'd really hate to think someone would be dumb enough to spray a lacquer or something that close to a $2,000 guitar, but I'm sure there's plenty of people that dumb lol, but it still makes me wonder if that guitar was a victim of those damn air fresheners.

    • @nitegoat1369
      @nitegoat1369 Před 8 lety +1

+Adam Nihei GC often sells used guitars and tells customers they are new. They usually do this with online or over-the-phone orders. This actually happened to me with a Fender Telecaster that I ordered from GC online.
The guitar had issues with the electronics as well as cosmetic damage. The Fender rep who straightened everything out for me said that he once worked at GC and it was common practice for employees to open up boxes to play new guitars they were interested in. They would then box them back up and sell them as new.
My guess is, my Tele was damaged by an employee. It took me ordering THREE Teles before they got me one with no flaws, still sealed in the original Fender factory box, and giving me a HUGE discount as well as a bunch of GC store credit.
I wonder if the gunk on the Trad Pro II in this video is nothing more than soda that an employee accidentally sprayed onto it while goofing around in the storeroom.

    • @adamn2022
      @adamn2022 Před 8 lety

+nitegoat1369 I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I have nothing against GC, but I've had more bad experiences than good. I remember I called up a GC store inquiring about a Gibson LP Traditional II that was listed in 'New' condition on GC's website and the sales rep who I talked to said joyfully "Yea! It's a new guitar, it was just returned by someone by its previous owner." Like what? I'm paying a new price premium for a used instrument?
Honestly I'd rather deal with online only websites such as MusiciansFriend or Sweetwater and risk having to return the instrument (no problem with their friendly return policies) than deal with GC's in store service. My SG I got from a smaller website called American Musical Supply was only opened up so that the website could take actual pictures of the instrument to post online. When I received it, the instrument came in its original box without a single fingerprint to be seen. I'm never had problems with online purchases for musical gear.

If the tone is right, why can't the cosmetics be ignored? you may get another discount from GC when pointing out the defect. As a collector, I would understand that the guitar should be perfect, but as a player?

That would buff out with some 3M Finesse polish. If I got a REALLY good deal on the guitar, I wouldn't mind fixing those things.

You should just get another Ibanez. They never let you down. :-) Or an ESP. Some great new ESPs on sale right now (MH1000 series) for about half price. Really pretty guitars.

I got screwed on a used Les Paul from Guitar Center recently too bro. I was told it was in Mint condition, but the thing had been worked on and it wasn't even the right guitar...

What amp and pedal would you have to get to make a Gibson Les Paul not sound like a Gibson Les Paul?

is it possible to fix it? like remove the over spray with super fine sand paper, then buff out the nitrocellulose underneath?

Hey dude, I've got a question about Les Paul's. I have a 1969 Deluxe Gold top (the one in my profile pic) and I recently found out that it was a "pancake body" with a 3 piece neck. Does that make it less expensive then a solid body? I've found ones on ebay for 7,000 dollars in worse shape than mine but I don't know if they are solid body's or "pancake body's".

My 2014 Trad Pro II (50's neck) is one of the finest guitars I have ever played or heard. Mine was still sealed with the "blue tape" in the box. It seems Gibson got it right with the Trad Pro II.
That's a REAL drag that GC didn't tell you about whatever that gunk is that's all over your guitar. They should hook you up with a new Trad Pro II for the same price you paid for the damaged one they sold you. Or, they should drop the price to $800 and you could keep it and take it to a luthier and have them remove the gunk. It's really a shame because the guitar in your video sounds great, except for the loud hum/white noise.
Could just be the wiring in whichever room you were shooting the video. I know my Trad Pro II makes a lot of noise in my spare bedroom, but is completely silent in my living room. It was also completely silent in the 'Platinum Room' at GC. I thought maybe it was the battery causing the noise from mine, so I removed it, and it didn't make any difference. So I plugged in my my 2009 Gibson Traditional, and it too was hissing like a cobra. The wiring in my spare bedroom must just be for shit. Good luck with everything.
