NEVER TOO SMALL Modular Milanese Micro Apartment - 34sqm/365sqft

- Inspired by modern European architecture and Japanese design. ATOMAA brought new life to a 34sqm 18th century apartment in the heart of Milan’s medieval Brera district. The addition of a modular system of folding panels allowed them to remove the apartments dividing walls, flooding it with light, and creating a single open zone with the bedroom at its centre. This zone can be redivided at will, hiding the bedroom away or expanding the dining area, while the panel's distinct pattern creates a sense of unity no matter how the apartment is configured.

Looks like your inspiration came from swiss cheese.
Glad I wasn't the only one whose thought of that!
Jskskss tbh when i saw the thumbnail
😂😂😂😂
😂😂😂
I'd have to say I find the hand holes pretty disconcerting. It seems to draw attention to the fact that the walls are just thin partitions.
I personally don't like those holes, but their idea is very clever. Overall the adaptation of this space is amazing, wonderful work.
Yes
Agreed. I would have gone with a different shape, but they had a great approach to the functionality to get the natural light in.
Picture it when its dark, when glimpse of light shines through..
The main concept was 🧀.
I love those holes.
I don’t know. 34sqm, but i feel this design makes this apartment smaller. There are some designs for
Because this bathroom is not too thiny like others, a normal size in euw
Finally storage space! You can see that someone could actually live there longer than a weekend. Quality content. Thank you.
Thanks for watching!
that cactus at the bed area is in the weirdest location ever,,,
@@20adam20 😂😂😂
Very interesting space! I like that they haven't compromised a lot on the kitchen space (that herb spot is very cute) and maximised the storage, and even having a 2nd bed area. The idea with the holes makes the space feel a bit more fun, however, it feels a bit childish - having only some details of the holes would've been better than having it everywhere. I would have probably painted most of the areas white (so it feels brighter and clean) or a different colour, it is a bit too much wood in my opinion. Other than that, very cute space and beautiful building.
I live in a 26m2 apartment and it looks normal without any contrived furniture. All it lacks is an additional 4m2 for a separate bedroom. For all this 34m2 this looks like 15m2!
For whole video I was considering a Murphy bed rather than the box. It takes lots of space during the day.
Aleksandra A yeah, but at the same time provides quiet bit of storage.
@@ladylang3 that's true, but in my opinion there is too much storage here.
Aleksandra Of course, every person knows what kind of space she/he may need. The architect did what his/her client asked for. But for me, I’d need that much space for sheets, blankets, towels, winter and summer sport gear, seasonal clothing, books, photo albums. I may not own too much but it’s amazing how much space my stuff occupies :)
@@ladylang3 correct :) I dont need too much storage, but youre right that client may need it more than free space!
Lots of snark in the comments about the holes, but I like them. The part I'm not a fan of is the "couch." It looks uncomfortable as it could possibly be, takes up a lot of space, and is just waiting to have cooking spilled all over it. I think I would've preferred a longer bench top and more storage and then a reading chair by the window, assuming it's a 1-person dwelling.
I've lived with people who never close cabinets after using it and I just laugh at the thought of them living in this space haha.
Feels like a space for renting out to tourists or some students
Too much storage that I Donnt feel like would be ever needed, I would personally add more sofa or seating areas or separate working desk than having so much storage
love this idea of 'retro-fitting' old apartment blocks to be in line with modern needs. this is definitely the way to preserve heritage buildings, especially in the city centres.
We totally agree!
This is a concept that really works on paper but I wonder if the client actually will make use of the separation wall between the kitchen and the dining area. I suspect that the wall will be open 99% of the time and perhaps in the future will be removed because they want to hang a picture or shelves on that wall space.
true! I was thinking that it will be good idea if they after awhile interview anyone who lived in the houses they show us to share their experience! that will be interesting
@@SaraU_U That is a great idea!! I often do wonder about that after seeing these videos.
Bryanpwo me too!! it’s unusual new, beautiful and creative ideas I really would like to know how it feels living in there~
The separation wall will come in very handy when you have visitors :) Architects design the space that suit the client's needs. :)
@@nevertoosmall I understand that concept but in real use, it doesn't work. The wall isn't a noise-cancelling wall, so when someone has a conference call and the partner is having a chat with the neighbour or friend, you still have interference. The client being Italian, they surely won't close off a dining space from the kitchen having friends over. But this is just an observation from my side.
And with the hole over the bed you can even get the ambient smell from when you've been on the toilet.
@@simple.visuals Indeed, there's a glass separating the bathroom and the bedroom. :)
@@nevertoosmall Sorry, couldn't see that one from the camera angle.
Why do I want swiss cheese all of a sudden....
Interesting inspiration. Good use of space and the craftsmanship level is very nice however it still feels very cramped with the elevated box in the middle of the living space. It feels like one would be living in a cardboard box.
Love that old building.
Very clever use of space. Personally I would have had the kitchen space where the built in lounge is, complemented with led lighting. In the space made by shifting the kitchen up, would be a pull out dining table. I would make the current dining area a lounge area suitable for a couple, making it a little larger by not having the wide window ledge.
Cool but it is laborious... all day long you're pushing and pulling those panels.
I like it that way least you are connected to the space not just "hey siri, slide curtain"
I think that the panels will be left open all the time. When would you ever *need* to close them?
@@tuppyglossop222 That's what I was thinking. In particular I don't really see the point of the folding wall between the kitchen and dining areas. I suppose being able to hide the sleeping area when guests come over is nice, but other than that the box would also be open all the time if I lived there.
That wood stain to me looks very 90's and dated. I'm not sure what setting it up that apartment like that has added to the space if anything its taken away. Surely if you want to add space you would want the bi fold doors to the dining room to be glass?
The design is okay, not a huge fan of the holes everywhere, more chances of dust collecting in the insides of the storage....
Is that an inverter AC on a super deep cabinet? Isn't that super bad for airflow? Seems like a bad idea :S
I'd add some vivid colours, and it would be more enjoyable, if someone is interested in this kinda of "flexible places" , Schroder house is a great example of it
I dream of living in a smartly designed Italian apartment 24/7. Thank you NEVER TOO SMALL for sharing 💛
You are so welcome!
Beautifully designed and executed. Needs a bit of personality, but a great space for living in a vibrant city where home is for keeping your stuff as much as anything.
This is one of my favorite Never Too Small episodes! I love the simplicity and flexibility of this design. The way the modern interior is coordinated with the historic aspects of the city is absolutely elegant!
I believe that this apartment belongs to a Milanese Casa di Ringiera, which is one of the first urban housing typologies produced in Milan last century.
Thanks for the video!
this would be cool if the panels were motorized, instead you're reminded each day how small your apartment is. Also, why does everyone use uncoloured wood in their modular structures? I feel like a white would be better in here
Yeah white or pastel colours would make it look a lot more approachable
I love stained wood but I agree at least some of it should be painted or a different material the uniformity of the surfaces feels a bit boring and suffocating
I always prefer the simplest solution. Motorized carries the risk of malfunction, this will work for a long time, doesn’t require electricity
Awesome ideas and well filmed video!
Thank you 😘 looking forward to your new videos!
When i saw the thumbnail I thought it's your video
I like so many ideas here! The one thing I would suggest they modify is to put holes underneath the bed so that the mattress can breathe, or else it can easily get moldy.
Man, how are there so many negative comments on this? This is a beautiful space. It seems functional and still interesting. Very inspiring!
I haven´t made so much screenshots for a long time ... well done, this is how I would love to live
Wow, thank you! X
That's very cool, and the amount of storage is awesome. I would live there 🥰
Fantastic apartment love it. The amount of storage is brilliant, so many places have minimal storage, do they not have linen, quilts, towels? You need at least 3 sets of sheets for each bed in a house and European homes don't use dryers so they depend on the weather to dry their clothes and linen. All this takes up storage. I would move the dining table across from the kitchen to use as additional bench space. That allows space for some comfortable chairs and a small table in front of the second window.
I live in 42Sq/m house and find it depressing that it has no character no art or anything of interest. How is natural timber elegant?
Timber isn't elegant. It is hip right now, it'll go away very soon.
Anca AS whatever
Smart and creative use of space.
(Personally I like the origami idea with the light wood design, but not the holes cause it looks like a house run by mice).
Yes almost perfect for me too except the window ledge looks like a lid to a coffin! I would love to live in this - with him❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
i think they did a pretty great job. don’t think i would have added a partition for the bed area or living room area though. also a kitchen that small needs a dishwasher. it’s about the size of my current kitchen and washing pots in pans and plates in a sink that small has been a nightmare and chore
I love his Italian accent when saying apartment (appartamento). I also love the house, the wood is very elegant.
I think it’s great. So much storage. I would just like a more comfortable sofa.
i like the way the created an open space that take advantage of the natural ligth, and using the folding panels they can modify the spaces, besides i love the holes in the wood that makes the apartment quite diferent
This Channel makes me want a small apartament
Such a clever way to create storage
Too much carpentry for me. Would love to see more bare walls. But then I love the holes and so ok, i can close one eye and give a like👍 to this video
Nice work! Thinking of using holes for my cupboards instead of handles too. If I lived there I would never close off the bedroom though, it blocks a lot of light and because it's so high up it's not that intrusive anyway :)
I really like this design. So much space and very open.
I like this design a lot, I would have painted the wood different colors to make it pop more, a bit too homogenous for me, but I undertand wanting to keep to a simple color palette
I love the idea of preserving and reusing old buildings rather than keeping building new ones. Still, all the old buildings that have been retrofitted in Milan are still very inefficient (energy class G). What's the solution for that?
Thank you for giving us some Europe examples, looking forward for more content like that.
PS: Every day I'm getting closer to the idea that this courageous Architects are the future(present) heroes of giving us the opportunity of affordable leaving in places where owning a big house is practically impossible. Thank you :)
Thank you! We work very hard to get access to film in these beautiful apartments, especially during the pandemic. You made our day! x
Very clever, keeps a clean mind.
The holes ideas is refreshing. With the lights and air coming from them, it looks great when you're inside the bedroom.
I totally agree!
I find it amazing how they make the space flexible, plus the reflection of Japanese houses is a great idea to maximize the functionality of the space. On the other hand it is fantastic how they have light control with details like holes in sliding doors.
Great use of space. Very innovative.
But personally, I can never live in this kind of space of moving too many things everyday..
Nice selection of materials 😍
Good effort but the bed area takes up too much space. Kinda creepy when you shut the doors and any guest could peep through one of the holes.. Should have gone with a Murphy bed. Also should have painted all that wood white. Otherwise', ok.
I think it is pretty inventive. The fact you can use it as a warehouse is also a bonus. Lots of storage.
Awesome !
Beautiful ! Thanks for sharing !!!
One of the best I’ve seen in this series. Bravo!
Very creative. the herb container and the wardrobe under the bed are fantastic. The holes are very cool. I love them. Nice job!
thanks! you've helped me figure out proportions for a project in studio
Perhaps an unpopular opinion but this has been one of my favorite designs!
I love how he integrated his culture in to this design.❤️
We think the same :)
Finaly an Episode in Italy! Love it
Today the way we live has had some restructuring in the way we live space and how we can improve the quality of life as a result of spatial transformation. This is a great example of how you can get the most natural light using different strategies depending on the configurations provided by modern but avant-garde furniture, to create an atmosphere of tranquility
That’s one of the best uses of space I’ve seen.
Im in love with that guy 😍
Very nice design, I really appreciate the effort made into designing the space. Great job!
Glad you like it!
Perfect! well thought out 😍
“Being Italian, kitchen is part of our daily routine.” 😁 thank you Italy for giving the rest of the world the idea of eating daily lol I tease but that was funny to hear.
I like the apartment. I’d probably change the holes to rectangular slits with rounded corners and stain the wood sliding panels a different color, maybe grayish or a deeper shade of brown with less yellow or white even but overall it’s nice. I like the extra storage beneath the bed
Also some art displayed on the walls or on ledges would be really nice to see
What he meant was, italians are fond of cooking their own meals, so their lives are spent around the kitchen, mainly. Not so keen on delivery or restaurants (who needs them when you KNOW how to cook delicious food?)
Incredibly creative!
I love this channel, love the way the videos are shot and presented. And the design .... uh...love it. I mean this in the best way possible but at night if I can’t sleep I watch these on autoplay and it helps me fall asleep.
That's Epic
I love it!!! If I were living there I'd add some color to the wood 💚💛💜💙🖤🤍❤
So cool!
Geniale 👏🏼
I really like this. The only reservation I'd have would be the impact of the sound of the sliding panels on surrounding apartments...
I feel like they should have cut some slats under the bed in the middle of the wood that opened up into the storage.. considering the bedroom closed off doesn’t get much ventilation, that mattress must get extremely warm..
I love Milan!!!!. Hugs from Spain!
I’m so glad you all released a new video!! I use these to go to sleep and already exhausted the whole channel 😭
Hope you enjoyed it!
Good job ! thank you for the video
Very good way to use the space.
OUTSTANDING!
good job with this episode and this apartment, thanks for sharing with us!
And thank you for your support! x
I'm getting hungry I'm seeing a giant cheese
Just mesmerising! 😍
Thanks a lot 😊
I' ♥ everything bout this....we need this in America...
Under bed storage was our favorite.
Very innovative
Like the colors so much. Just imagine living there with a pet
Fantastico,senza parole
Great craftsmanship!
Really is!
I love the “herb hole”
Lovely! And those holes are so cute!
I like the idea of giving continuity between the spaces to allow light to enter the whole house, the concept of linking the environment with the interior is maintained through a contemporary vision, and different drop-down elements, however, it seems to me The use of wood was too much, it makes the space look very saturated and smaller than it is, as well as the holes on it.
So smart.. Whole ideas are smart..
Great ideas always!👌
Thank you! Cheers!
It’s an interesting project, has a good use of the space, the simplicity and flexibility are amazing, had a smart and creative use of space but I think I won’t be comfortable at all living in this apartment, I would prefer another type of distribution and a little bit longer.
Bravo, great job Andrea, comunque Brera è fantastica!
I love this channel. I am about to graduate and I think this is the future
I like wood, but that's quite a lot of it! I would not adapt well to the elevated bed, and I'm not sure about the holes, but the rest of the apartment seems very functional and practical.
