NEVER TOO SMALL Modular Milanese Micro Apartment - 34sqm/365sqft

  • Inspired by modern European architecture and Japanese design. ATOMAA brought new life to a 34sqm 18th century apartment in the heart of Milan’s medieval Brera district. The addition of a modular system of folding panels allowed them to remove the apartments dividing walls, flooding it with light, and creating a single open zone with the bedroom at its centre. This zone can be redivided at will, hiding the bedroom away or expanding the dining area, while the panel's distinct pattern creates a sense of unity no matter how the apartment is configured.

Very interesting space! I like that they haven't compromised a lot on the kitchen space (that herb spot is very cute) and maximised the storage, and even having a 2nd bed area. The idea with the holes makes the space feel a bit more fun, however, it feels a bit childish - having only some details of the holes would've been better than having it everywhere. I would have probably painted most of the areas white (so it feels brighter and clean) or a different colour, it is a bit too much wood in my opinion. Other than that, very cute space and beautiful building.

Lots of snark in the comments about the holes, but I like them. The part I'm not a fan of is the "couch." It looks uncomfortable as it could possibly be, takes up a lot of space, and is just waiting to have cooking spilled all over it. I think I would've preferred a longer bench top and more storage and then a reading chair by the window, assuming it's a 1-person dwelling.

This is a concept that really works on paper but I wonder if the client actually will make use of the separation wall between the kitchen and the dining area. The wall isn't a noise-cancelling wall, so when someone has a conference call and the partner is having a chat with the neighbour or friend, you still have interference. Fantastic apartment love it. The amount of storage is brilliant, so many places have minimal storage, do they not have linen, quilts, towels? You need at least 3 sets of sheets for each bed in a house and European homes don't use dryers so they depend on the weather to dry their clothes and linen. All this takes up storage. I would move the dining table across from the kitchen to use as additional bench space. That allows space for some comfortable chairs and a small table in front of the second window.

I like the idea of giving continuity between the spaces to allow light to enter the whole house, the concept of linking the environment with the interior is maintained through a contemporary vision, and different drop-down elements, however, it seems to me The use of wood was too much, it makes the space look very saturated and smaller than it is, as well as the holes on it.

It’s an interesting project, has a good use of the space, the simplicity and flexibility are amazing, had a smart and creative use of space but I think I won’t be comfortable at all living in this apartment, I would prefer another type of distribution and a little bit longer.

I like wood, but that's quite a lot of it! I would not adapt well to the elevated bed, and I'm not sure about the holes, but the rest of the apartment seems very functional and practical.
