Originally a double-framed metal garage, Coledale Beach Studio is now a light, bright and compact house overlooking the ocean. Originally home to interior designer Cushla McFadden and her family of 4, McFadden’s mother now calls it home. Constructed from prefabricated panels, the striking exterior features two garage-like bi-folding doors that open onto the open-plan living, kitchen, dining and bathroom that hide behind a curved wall. A set of sliding doors on the opposite side of the room open directly only a closed deck, creating cross ventilation and adding to the expansive feel of the double volume space. A set of storage steps, which house the TV and the bulk of the studio’s storage, lead to an enclosed mezzanine bedroom that looks out onto the ocean through a large glass interior window. This thoughtfully designed studio is a proof-of-concept on how more sustainable and intergenerational living models can be a matter of seeing beyond what already is to what could be.

I feel like no one in the comments section listened to what she said. They lived there temporarily (probably during main house renovation?), and her mom is going to live in the small house. They never intended to live with teenagers. For the limited time when kids are this small I feel it’s perfect 💛
Thus, the empty fridge 😅
AHH Bless, you think you can have privacy when you have two small children, dream on ! My 5 year old leaves her room, goes down the hall, and bursts into our room at least once a week@@i.f.7386
@@i.f.7386 Who are you to say "it's not OK"????? you don't know them, their way of life etc.... don't judge!!!
The only thing that is not suitable for future independent living for one person is the lack of a washing machine.
When the mom moves in, the space for the day bed upstairs can be used for extra clothing storage (e.g.dressers). I would also add cupboards in the kitchen, instead of the shelf. They could be white to blend with the wall.
Beautiful design!
Exactly. Wish people would listen before criticising….
2:05 this is probably the best "before picture" ever, haha
the balcony view is majestic
Surprisingly warm atmosphere in spite of very white interier! love it.
Beautiful design and setting. As a 70yr old I’d be delighted to live there if I were on my own. Must be lovely to know that most days are going to be warm and you can open the place up. I live by the sea but the Bristol Channel doesn’t quite give off the same vibe😆
Really calming cosy little space. She has made a lot of great design decisions. I imagine their son would really want to move in there from the main house as soon as he's in his teens.
peaceful idea
Not as long as Granny's there 🤨😂 But yeah, maybe the baby in future. That would be very extravagant for a teenager.
I'm envious because even though the place is small, the whole area is free from a building so they can have a lot of options for light and air. My house have the same measurement, but my right and back walls are jointed with the neighbors walls. Sigh.
She's done a great job, though. Love the minimalistic design too.
I'm sure a very good floorplan can be achieved with your place too, since having two walls open means at least one of them is definitely facing the sun. I love figuring out how to make awkward spaces work in my spare time, I'm always looking up small flats online and doodling layout variations on a piece of paper. I wonder if perhaps I could help you somehow...
You could think about using a large or several smaller skylights instead, to add more light from a third plane. It can make a HUGE difference in a small space to be able to see the sky, hear the rain pitter-patter, and flood the space with natural light, and there are remote controlled blind solutions for roof windows too.
It's costly but I think a valuable, transformative investment.
Wow! That is gorgeous. I love what she said about smaller spaces allowing for the use of higher end finishes/products because there are less of them. Her Mom will love living there as her family did 😍
The one thing I'd have changed is the concrete ex-driveway wedge between the street window and street. I'd have had that removed from the get go, and planted shrubs, a hedge or a slow growing tree there, to let some greenery in when that window is open and provide natural privacy inside, plus just give the structure more of a grounded impression, less of an ex-garage look. Oh and having build myself a small kitchen this size once, I'd do what I did then, add a two tiered trolley on big industrial wheels with a butchers block top and a rail with hooks to the side, for some prepspace and mise en place That's easily wheeled around and can be brought out onto the patio for easy serving. Beyond that, it's a great design, they even thought of a cleaning/utility cabinet with vertical storage, nice touch!
To give a bit more privacy when the front double doors are open I might a container hedge in what was the driveway. I think the inside design is brilliant!
I agree. Not just privacy, but view-why open double doors at all if all it gets you is a chance to stare at bare pavement.
Opening the double doors is to allow cross ventilation, but it doing so exposes the entire inside of your home to people passing by...???? I would add a privacy screen/mosquito barrier
Love it. We don’t need much to be happy. The balcony is amazing with a world class view too!
Well you need enough $$$ to do that renovation, plus basically keeping your main home in the city. Basically rich people playing downsizing.
@@frodo322 jealous?
It is listed as an airbnb as "Coastal Escape with ocean views" in Coledale
Now changed to Tiny Home in Coledale
I'd happily live there for the rest of my life. Besides nothing beats the NSW sunshine.
5:10 As fellow cattledog lover. I like the fact that your's is using the polished cement as a cool pillow.
Man, this is perfect as a bachelor pad.
I love any homes that are small, clean, bright, white and minimal so for me, this build would be a lovely simple place to live. But as a Granny flat, I wouldn’t want to navigate stairs at night to use the downstairs bath room. I would also want black out blinds or curtains across the mezzanine bedroom window.
There are many wonderful solutions here!
Grinding down the original floor to expose a natural mosaic.
The curve on the shower wall to assist flow to the kitchen.
Closing off the upstairs and creating a family resting/sleeping area. The view from that window! - first the inner world then the outer world. .....
I have never appreciated minimalism for living spaces but this is not visually cold and it is a guest house so it needs less practicality (washer/dryer in the main house).
The folding doors on the dining room create the tropical feel of a lanai. It becomes a porch on the public side to engage with neighbors in a waterfront community.
Also, best placement & space usage for the required large TV.
Excellent design!
Thanks for finding and for sharing.
this is really pretty! but it screams airbnb/vacation rental which doesn't go as well with the channel
Also want to add that I appreciate how this showcases just how soft and calming an all-white interior can be. ❤❤
It’s lovely and bright! What a great temporary space, especially when the kids are small. Growing up we had a small cottage we spent ours summers at. I love a small space… it may not be great with a growing family but in the interim it’s terrific. Great for the Mum and even a couple!
It's perfect - for two seniors (like my wife & me) it would be perfect - so comfortable & peaceful. Excellent work. One of the best uses of space I have ever seen. Thanks for the review.
Omg they do have cooktops that you can unplug and put away. This is a beautiful space.
Absolutely impressive transformation from garage to a cozy beach studio! The clever utilization of space and natural light gives this compact Australian retreat a spacious and inviting feel. A perfect blend of functionality and seaside charm.
Noice! This is about all one really needs + a murphy bed and the loft could be an office too. Beautifully detailed. Good job Cushla.
So beautiful! I can resonate with the beautiful moment of tiny living when your kids are tiny. I did it with my two youngest and we will treasure those memories forever. Now they're teens so obvs we're in a normal-sized house (yuck 😅), and I long to go back to the precious feeling of being so close and comfortable together! 😊 You never can of course, so I'm grateful we had it when we could, like this couple have. Beautiful job guys!❤❤
This is just brilliant. I really enjoyed this small house tour. Such a superb way to repurpose the space of an older 2 car garage. Thank you for sharing.
Fantastic use of space design....and works well for great easy living. A great transformation...only having what you actually need.
Perfect little house with amazing view. Love it ❤!
super nice design. for now it is my favourite transformation on your channel
i'm always calmed by NTS video's but this one made me very calm. lovely light and airy home
Oh what a beautiful space. I love small cozy cottages/homes. I feel safe and cocooned. ❤
Really thoughtfully and beautifully done! And that deck and view, phenomenal!!
It's a fantastic reno and shows what can be done with a garage footprint.
so minimal and clean for two kids and a dog. great work and nice design
Love this. A lot of thoughts has obviously gone into designing this unit. Small but so livable. I can see myself living happily there 😀
Gorgeous, one of the best in australia, but obvious an Airbnb space - no stove and no wardrobe, just space for pillows and blankets.
Very beautiful compact yet practical design ❤
Wow! Miss Lady you outdid yourself with this project! Love. It.
Beautiful!
I would have put a small induction cooker just in case 😉
Perfect for me. Love the shower door and all the finishings that you used in this place. Creative transformation. ❤
This is just a studio space they converted from a garage that's meant as an extra room. She says that they moved from "the studio to the main house", meaning that this is not their primary residence.
I highly doubt they lived in this studio for very long, but the fact they didn't specify how long feels rather misleading. There's no way this is a sustainable set up for a family with two kids.
It was built in 2022. Little kids.
They lived there for 2 years and now her mother is moving in. I don’t understand what the problem is ?
It’s not uncommon for people to build something small to live in whilst a big renovation is being carried out. Clearly this design is really only going to work with very young children if you want a normal Western lifestyle. In other countries, families all sleep together in one room because that’s how much space they have, no matter the ages of the children.
I love it. The kids are growing up and they will ahve their own rooms soon, but this was fantastic with little ones!
Stunningly beautiful transformation, that's space efficient & all class.
This is as close to a perfect design as i've seen.. Every aspect is derived with finesse, and placed within the most efficient and aesthetic configuration.
Very thoughtfully designed and beautifully contextual, bravo.
This is fantastic. Functional and nicely planned.
Amazingly beautiful! All that white and the view on the sea!
Looks very nice, but I could never live in a place without at least one hotplate and I didn't see one. Do they only eat salad, fruits and whatever they can make with a microwave?
One bedroom for the entire family is also a bit small, but it might work as long as the children are very young. It is a beautiful and functional home for one person though (if you add a hotplate), so her mother is lucky to move in soon.
I believe this is just a holiday home that they decided to move to temporarily. Maybe they barbecue? She mentions outdoor cooking. Maybe they have a portable hot plate.
They might have a mobile hotplate that you can plug in when necessary .
@@frodo322they explained (rather clearly, I thought) that this was an in-law suite for her elderly mother while they live in the main house.
Guess this is their Aibnb home for for rent
@@jpp7783she says that but this is not designed (at all) for an elderly person. It might be suitable for now but not into the future. It's more suitable for airbnb rental.
Compact, clean, beautiful view. Loved it!
I love this one so much. But I personally wouldn't sacrifice so much of the kitchen. I'm not a designer so I don't know how I'd do it, but I find the kitchen is an important part of the house, and this small house doesn't give it the space it deserves.
it screams "i eat takeout for every meal"
Some really great ideas here. Love the cut out shelves. Genius!
Love the cutouts on the shelves in the long closet! Brilliant!
It is a very nice house with a lot of sun and beautiful views! Congratulations!
Beautifully done.
This was a very cool space! love the design
What a beautiful space. I'm jealous your mother gets to live there. Well done!
so unique! look great
What an awesome space!!! Congratulations!!!
Very creative! It's like having a permanent vacation spot just steps away from home! 🏖🏡
Love the deck section with THAT gorgeous view
I think she is right my parents and my sibling and I we used to live in a very small space and those memories stay with you cause it’s such a small memorable place and those memories remain for years and gives you a secure feeling of where you belong and how your family is like
Absolutely lovely and innovative. Beautifully done.
I love this, seems so bright and breezy
One of the best lately. Excellent! 👍
Beautiful. Love the look of it. Amazing view from the deck. With how nice this is I would love to see the renovated main house (though no doubt not “small”).
So beautiful and well done! I love this project ❤
OH YES! This is my style home❤ well done👌👏👏👏👏
Great and simple design
Beautiful. Cutouts in utility closet brilliant.
Beautiful, calm design, good vibe. Great recycling of the garage. But it is a short time rental, for 2.
The dinning chairs are awesome!!!
Great use for a garage area instead of storing junk! I’m designing an adu that will also integrate the garage area in living space and this design shows how creativity can actually create more with less
Absolutely loved this! It definitle has my wheels turning with inspiration.
I really could live here! One of the best I’ve seen.
I'm all about colour but this house is very well done and inviting. I'd live here in a heartbeat.
Beautiful.
like this kind of small house..it is small but not over compact like many other designs. feel very spacious and comfortable.
Congratulation ,,,,you did en excellent job ...simply great !!!
This looks like a good design for a Sims home. Very beautiful
I looooveee all about it. Everything's just right. Simple clean and functional❤
This chapter should be sponsored by Airbnb...
That is literally my dream home for one. I wouldnt change a thing about it. ❤
Beautiful, love the color pallet.
love the awareness to the indigenous people of that land ♥️
Amazing transformation 😍
First impression: this feels surprisingly large for a home that's only 40m/431sqft!
As someone with aging in-laws who live near me, the concept of a "mother-in-law suite" or a tiny home next to our home is something my husband and I have discussed many times. One question would be about the limited cooking options in the kitchen. Obviously if her mum is not planning to cook much, that kitchen is more than adequate. My other concern would be that older people don't necessarily want to deal with a steep staircase on a regular basis. Again, her mum may not mind that, but my in-laws have already downsized from a two-story home to a one-story one for this exact reason, and were we ever to build a small home for them, it would need to be all on one level.
My favorite part of this design is the airflow. There are far too many homes around where I live that just don't take this into consideration. Airflow really is everything, especially in a seaside or rural property. It makes all the difference when interior air can properly circulate. It was the whole reason for things like transom windows and slat vents between rooms a hundred years ago: so people could have privacy while still allowing fresh air to move about the home. I can just see sitting on that sofa (washable covers are GENIUS), enjoying the cross-breeze between the folding garage doors and the sliding glass door. It would be lovely!
This one is AMAZING!
You have done such great job! ❤
Clever. Considered. Beautiful.
Classy build, nice work, greetings from Dallas, TX
Now this is why I subscribed.
One of the nicest housing here! Simply beautiful.
tastefully done. I love it!
This is stunning! Love it.
