I bought a set of SHP9500's off Newegg a few years ago. They were on a open box sale for $30, and for that price, they were unbeatable. I ended up selling my SHP9500's when they got hard to get. After that, I basically traded up even to a set of X2HR's that I got during a Black Friday sale. The SHP9500's are pretty good for the price ($50-$75), but I definitely recommend the X2HR over the SHP9500.

I own 9500's. I watched tons of reviews before getting them, so I'm sure you were included. I've been enjoying the hell out of them for years. They're so comfy that sometimes I forget I'm wearing them or get a cable snagged and rip them off my head. They still haven't broken yet, but I poke around the internet every once in awhile to see what else is on the market in case I ever need to replace them. Still haven't found anything that comes as highly rated and considering I love these I can't say I'd get anything else for the foreseeable future. Now, onto watch this video and see if the 9600's can compare.
EDIT: Okay, so sticking with the 9500's if I have to replace. Most comfortable headphones I've ever worn and love the sound signature. Don't listen to bassy music much and haven't been disappointed yet, even in Cyberpunk which has a fair amount of bass in its soundtrack. Just love these headphones and still impressed years after owning them, and I only paid $42 total!

I love my SHP9500 (both hands up btw!) Bass is at the bottom of my priority list so I don't mind the lack of low end. But when I want it, I'd just switch on the True Bass on the Zen dac to add dat thicc, buttery goodness. And it definitely add good amount of depth to the 9500's sound. This combo is just perfect together, imo!

I've been wearing my SHP9500s every single day for hours since 2016 and they were so incredibly worn out and basically falling apart.
So I decided to swap the inner circle part that contains the driver over to my SHP9600 "frame" because I kind of don't like them anyways.
Everything fit perfect but the weird thing is, it literally just sounds exactly the same as the 9600 now despite the entire center circle being from the 9500.
So I think what gives the 9600 it's more warm relaxed sound is the egg shaped part being a different shape and the pads being a bit deeper.
    Kind of bizarre to me.

I've had other brands before but the wire always broke within a year or two, and being attached to the headphones meant the whole thing was now broken.
If I understand correctly the SHP9500 helped to influence the mid tier headphone market, at least in their designs?

Hey Z, do you have any recommendations on open back headphones for music and gaming?
So far my candidates are Sennheiser HD600 and ATH R70X, but maybe there are more similar or better options to those? I think 300-400 is my price range but I might concider 400-500 cans too.
I like detachable wires, somewhat sturdy, comfort for long sessions.
From what Ive heard and read I think those two cans kind of fit that bill and have a sound I'd might like. Natural if not slightly on the warm/gentle side but nothing thats too colored and seem to do a good job with most genres of music. Im not a bass head, but some bass is nice, I listen to pretty much everything tho.
And something that is a nice performer in games so it not only sound nice and detailed but gives a sense of locality and presence for good immersion and get a sense of where things are, and hear the little sparkly details.
I am very much hyped for the Ps5 and what that thing is going to do for sound in games, so figured I should get some reasonably great cans for that, and it would probably elevate my experience gaming on my pc as well and listening to music in general too since I've never had real great headphones before and I believe its time to uppgrade from my... erhhhrhrhm... M50x headset...
Just found your channel today, and I have enjoyed your reviews immensely so far.

Indeed I got the SHP9500 from this channel plus hearing reviews from other channels and reading more reviews. They were also the most well reviewed open-back headphone in my tiny college budget. Paired with a Fiio E10K
I did tweak the sound a little to tame the highs at 5khz and add a little to the low end (only added/subtracted a couple dB at most).
Based on the review here, it sounds like the 9500 and 9600 compliment each other and as stated, are not upgrades to each other. Perhaps I would have liked the 9600 stock more for the "relaxed" style of sound. But tweaking the 9500's kept the detail and added the low end I needed.

So as someone looking into using the 9500's for all around general use (music, gaming, discord, youtube), are they a good choice? I've also been watching your Sivga SV series videos to see if those are an option.

    • @mattrismatt
      @mattrismatt Před 3 lety

Regarding detail and looks, the *Sivga SV007* absolutely blows the SHP series - _as well as most other sub-$500 open-back headphones_ - out of the water. Problem is, you absolutely must replace their crappy stock pads. Pads that sound the best on the 007: alcantara or any thin cloth or perforated material. Brainwavz Velour pads sound ok on the 007, but clarity is not as good as can be achieved. Dekoni Jerzee pads should also work, but I have yet to confirm.
My pads of choice are actually old Brainwavz Pleather pads _with all of the pleather material removed (flaked off)._ The resulting sound and comfort is among the best of any headphone I've ever heard. No exaggeration. (Given the choice, I'd take them over my pad-swapped Sundara.)
