    To fix jank cables, wrap it very tightly around a large Pyrex measuring cup (use tape to secure the ends), and pour in really hot or boiling water. This will soften up the rubber and will straighten out all the kinks.

  • @TXHusker05

    I'd strongly consider larger fire extinguishers in a house with that much open space and gas/propane. 1A10BC is pretty small, covering just 10 square feet with the equivalent of 1 gallon of water. It is a good fight your way out size extinguisher to put upstairs, in bedrooms/closets, at the base of the stairs in the basement or next to the stove but you are going to want at least one 3A40BC somewhere on the first floor and at least one, maybe 2, somewhere in the basement. I'd also go 3A40BC in your garage.
    With the amount of value you have in that basement and the amount of open space, even 2 1A10BCs will not give you a lot of fire fighting power. I have a 3A40BC in my kitchen, my garage shop and then 1A10BCs in each bedroom closet as an emergency fight your way out or die type role.

      Do you have any recommendations on ones that big? I can’t find anything that big on amazon that doesn’t have yikes reviews

    • @TXHusker05
      @TXHusker05 Před 3 lety +5

      @@robparker5525 All of my extinguishers are Kidde Pro, just because that is what is most available to me locally, but First Alert and Amerex are both great too. Do not buy from Amazon though. With Amazon, you have no idea how long it has been sitting in a warehouse or how it was handled in shipping and if it arrives with the tamper seal broken or even partially discharged (it happens way more than you'd think), returning it is a monster headache. I imagine that's the source of the bad reviews. I have seen Amazon-shipped fire extinguishers arrive having discharged *inside* the shipping box because the tamper seal was gone, the pin fell out easily (as it is designed) and it just banged around in the inside of the box in transit, discharging a little each time.
      If you don't have an actual fire safety business locally that sells extinguishers, usually for a bit cheaper than big box stores, just buy from Lowe's or Home Depot. It is easy to open the box, physically inspect that the gauge is in the green and the tamper seal is in place before you buy and stock rotates quick enough that you're almost guaranteed to be receiving something manufactured fairly recently.
      Kidde's Pro line is fantastic, though a little expensive (~$55 for a 3A40BC). The Pro line differs from the regular line in that they can be recharged if you use it or after 6 years of non-use and that they have metal handles and valves, which I would consider mandatory anywhere there is a fire risk (basement, kitchen, garage, laundry room if the dryer is gas powered, wherever the water heater is, etc). Small plastic handled extinguishers are fine in low risk areas, but anywhere a fire is likely to be, you want metal.

      Matt Thankyou, i found some at the home depots website, fire safety ftw

    • @TXHusker05
      @TXHusker05 Před 3 lety +7

      I forgot to mention it originally, @ZeosPantera, but it looks like you're out in the country so keep in mind it might take a lot longer for the fire department to get to you than it otherwise would have in town. If a fire does start, you're going to want extinguishers with enough agent and range to put up a fight as long as you can before you need to get yourself out. The typical response time in the city from call to turnout to transit is around 5 minutes, in rural areas it can be closer to 15 minutes (maybe more if it is a volunteer department). The difference between 5 and 15 minutes when it comes to a fire can be the difference between still having a house and not.
      Also, since you're on well water, it is possible there are no pressurized fire hydrants anywhere near you so the only water the FD may have to fight a fire is the water onboard the engine or a separate water tender. Usually in areas with no hydrants, fire departments have higher capacity engines responding to calls (~1000 gallon vs ~300 in the city) to compensate for that problem, but that's a huge house so you're definitely going to want to be able to put up as much of a fight as possible before it gets to that point.
      I don't know where exactly you are, but you might do a quick google maps check of where the nearest fire house is or you can probably just call the non-emergency line and ask.

    So FWIW, as a literal dimmer expert, thats only how like rheostat dimmers from the 1950's work. Dimmers that actually fit in the wall basically just PWM the lights so whatever percentage you dim down is just off. The dimmer does dissipate something like 1% of the thermal load of the lamp in the control circuit but that's it.
