  • Visiting the grave of the hatchet lady Carry Nation. She was very well known in the history books for not liking alcohol very much, and everywhere she went she would smash the devil's poison every chance she got.

A lot of times they would sell the alcohol out of pharmacies for “medicinal purposes “. I remember my grandmother joking that she was taking her medication.

Being destructive doesn't accomplish much. However, my father died from alcoholism although he had some good years. It is a sad fact so many have that addiction.

My mother died of alcoholism at 50. A month and a half later my father died at 42, also an alcoholic, but actually died of a heart attack, due to a rheumatic heart condition from age about 17. Luckily raised by my grandparents from age 7….. in Arkansas. They lived in Chicago. Still so hard to deal with…..

I used to live in Leavenworth KS. When we were there, there was a hotel called the Cody Hotel (named for Buffalo Bill Cody, who was posted at Ft. Leavenworth adjacent to the city). It had a bar which was famously chopped to hell by Ms. Nation. Pretty cool.

I once had a postcard that showed Carrie Nation outside her cave with a broom. It's interesting that she lived in a cave at some point in her life. I'd like to add that she regularly consumed a patent medicine with a high alcohol content, which is kinda funny. 😂

There's a scar in the bar in the Menger Hotel in San Antonio (near the Alamo) that it's said she whacked the bar with the axe. It's not substantiated but it is the legend. Now, totally substantiated is the fact that Theodore Roosevelt recruited some of his Rough Riders in that bar. And, bonus, the thing is said to be haunted. It's a beautiful hotel, I did some research on it for one of my books and got fascinated. If you've ever heard of the King Ranch in Texas, Richard King, the original owner, used to stay at the Menger all the time, sometimes for months. There's a suite there that he stayed in that is now the King Suite. They've even furnished it with the old furniture.
Carry Nation was quite a bit of work from what I've read.

Very interesting story! We like your stories! 😂😂😂 She was a fiesty little lady! I admire her mission. I drank as a very young 18 to 21 years old. Before Iowa changed the drinking age. I then became a Mom and never really drank again. It'd been about 15 years in June, when my son got married, we shared a rum and coke before the wedding. I had a glass of champagne to toast their marriage. Other than that, It'll probably not really happen again, no plans too. So, no alcohol is not an issue for me. 😂😂😂
This story really makes you think what prohibition must have been like??? It must have been really interesting. What did people do??? No tv, no alcohol, no weed or other vices. That only leaves sex. I'm surprised there was no baby boom.

Nobody has ever died from marijuana, however, alcohol related deaths are astronomical. My father was killed 34yrs. ago by a hit and run drunk driver. The driver got away with it because nobody actually saw him driving. Only saw his car, so his insurance had to pay out to the two minor remaining children. My father was no saint believe me. So when I hear this story about Carry, I applaud her efforts, as wrong as what she done was, I still applaud her! Thanks for a great story Lamont! 😘

Hello! I am a Christian. My Jesus would never ask someone to chop up any buildings or anyone. Alcoholism often comes from emotional or physical pain. My g. grampa was wounded in the civil war, and it never healed. He drank to take away the pain.
Relieving the suffering is what is needed. Findind security in the Lord frees so many people. She was probably traumatized as a little child and this is the outcome.
    Liquor is not the problem.
    Moderation is the key.
Thanks Lamont for anothr fine video.

It is evilness in a bottle when you think of how many rapes, murders, car accidents and deaths are attributed to alcohol. Although we will probably never be able to make it illegal again, we can STIGMATIZE it like we did with cigarettes.
